I think it just depends on your mood or musical preference. Opiate was more of the angry young Maynard and had this raw underground sound we didn't hear after the EP and Undertow. Opiate 2 showcases the evolution of Tool
I prefer the original but the reboot is badass as well.

I like both equally pretty much. The first holds up just fine, and the new one has changes that I dig.
I used to not like the original.... But since this new version came out, I absolutely love the middle section.... And now that I have been playing the old one too, I like that now
They have been playing this version live since i believe 2014 was just called "Extended Version" so they decided to actually do a studio version of this cut and release it on the 30th anniversary album release

Yeah, it's basically a studio rerecording of their live version, that they've played for well over a decade, including the extended midsection
You kept mentioning that the bass sounded different. That's a good call. They have different bass players in the different versions.
First time I heard it was live before they released the recording. It was soooo good! Glad they released it. Wish they would release the Extended Stinkfist they do live as well.
I love that you did both versions! I have to give the nod to the original. I enjoyed the new version, but it's just like an extended version that I would only want to hear from time to time as an accent to the classic track.
Love how you explain things with movements like I do at times. Sometimes I even hit them accidentally. I feel the same. First one sounds more raw like the whole ep. This one they just said let’s make it more tool guys, like you said. Maybe in 30 more years they’ll make the opiate 3 you talked about.
They’d been playing this version for over a decade at the live shows, so it’s not really a new new version. I wish they would do the same for stinkfist and schism, since they have updated versions of both.

So, the original version was recorded with Paul D'Amour on bass... Since Justin Chancellor joined in 1995, they would stretch out and expand the live version to what we hear now... for the anniversary, they decided to record the extended version they developed with Justin.
I think I prefer the original, because it's the original. But...I really like this version, too. They, obviously, changed it up to fit how they have progressed. They've been playing it at shows for quite a while, though. Maynard's voice sounds really great in this version! I was worried for a while that his voice wouldn't fully recover after having covid twice. And pretty bad the second time.

Well. This coming from a newer Tool fan. I listened to Opiate2 before Opiate. Maybe a different perspective? I like the newer version a bit more… Opiate is raw. Both good stuff.
I prefer the newer version almost solely based on the very end because it’s the same chords and ties up with wings for Marie and 10000 days, which are two songs that need to be reacted to back to back as a single video. Fair warning though, it will be a long video.

In the older stuff there was more Bass. I think over the years Adam had perfected his craft so it's more up front. In the original was mostly Bass and Adams guitar was grungy and there but didn't stand out like in this.
My favorite Tool version is the one I am currently listening to.

I'm pretty sure they made this for the 30th anniversary of the Opiate EP. As for which I prefer? Probably the original. As you said, it's just a much tighter experience and feels heavier. But, the new version is cool in its own, new-Tool way. I'm glad they did it.

There original Bass player was awesome too. Don't know how they fount 2 gems but the Bass has been half there sound forever.
Atmosphereric sounds good
As an old Tool fan I was slightly underwhelmed by the amount of the changes to the original. Just wanted more added. Hey, who am I kidding?...It's still new Tool and sounds great so of course my lil' beggin' ass damn sure will take it as is!!!
Of course, I love them both. But, I do prefer the newer version. Either wat, I do still love your thoughtful Tool reactions and look forward to them. :)

So when you said that all bands should do this? Well you may not be familiar with them but Flotsam & Jetsam did that with one of their albums. They rerecorded it after 30 years
They did it to remind people that now more than ever they need to think for themselves rather than be led around as puppets to a fake god/religion, politician, media or other wise.
Wow... so many reactions to Tool here... but NO... absolutely NO reaction of "Third Eye" :O . You should also check the band "Soen" which sounds super close to Tool (even on vocals) or "Rishloo"

I've listened to the new one just a few times, so my opinion may change in... a year or two? But anyway, this one feels a little overdone to my taste. Better produced, with much improved vocal technique, more tastefully played etc? Yes, absolutely, but... no, that's not enough.
I think I can sum it up like this -- I would never want Tool to re-record Undertow in the way they made Fear Inoculum (which I also love, BTW).

I think you were getting a bit bored by the interlude there. Next time ignore the atmospheric guitar and recognize that the band is pulling back to feature the incredible drum solo.
