How To Cut Mini Blinds To Width Quick & Easy!

  • Sometimes the mini blinds are too wide to fit the window. This is when you need to know how to cut mini blinds to width. It's not as hard as you might think. I was at Lowes one day and asked the "associate" to cut these blinds for me and he said that you couldn't trim the basic mini blinds!
    So I told him that would be alright. I went back to the jobsite, measured my opening one last time, taped each end of the blind tightly and used my miter saw to cut on the mark I made after measuring the blind to length!
    These mini blinds that needed cut to width were Project Source mini blinds from Lowes. They were just a little to wide to fit the window opening.
    One tip I would give you is to completely tape the ends. Then make your mark on the tape before cutting the mini blind to width. This will help keep all those little pieces from going everywhere after you cut the mini blind.
    One more tip about cutting your mini blind to width is after you cut the blind, take a sanding block and round over the ends to match the opposite side. Do this before removing the tape.
    Also, as mentioned in this video, if your mini blind needs cut more than a 1/4", it's a good idea to cut equal amounts off each end. This will help the mini blind to look balanced and not lopsided.
    You can cut a mini blind with a miter saw like I did in this video or use a hacksaw or even a handsaw! No special blade is needed. Just make sure the ends are taped tightly. If using a miter saw to cut your blind to width, just make sure the saw has reached its top RPM before cutting. And cut slow or else you run the risk of chipping the edges.

    My husband can do about anything. The lady at Lowes said they could custom order my 74.5"W × 58.5"L vinyl blinds for around $250. I'm just going to buy their 77" blinds and have my husband (customize) them thos weekend ... lol... thanks a bunch for your video. I knew there was a cheaper & better solution

      Congrats on your new blinds. I'm glad I could help! Cutting blinds is really easy. I had the guy in the blind dept at Home Depot tell me you couldn't trim blinds without a special saw like they have...lol I told him to come watch this video :)

    Thank You! Getting ready to cut the same exact ones. I was going to use a table saw.....but I like the miter saw idea better and didn't think of it till seeing this.

    Thanks! I'll try this on a mini blind this is 1/4 or so too wide. I was going to cut it with scissors and a box cutter for the top/bottom. This looks much easier.

    If any of you don't have a mitre saw, you can use a cutting wheel on a Dremel...same results, quick and easy

    What a minute, you produced a video about cutting down blinds, and you left out that very thing! That's like watching the beginning and the end of a movie, not seeing what happened in the middle. A "How to cut blinds" video that doesn't show cutting the blinds!

    Nice video. I was wondering what I was going to do about my windows till I saw this video. What kind of blade are you using on your miter saw?

    • @BlueCollarDIY
      @BlueCollarDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a standard cross cut 24 tooth blade. But a finer tooth blade does a better job of cutting blinds on a miter saw.

      They have a machine they lay them in, slide a stop to the width they want to cut, close the hood and start it. It's pretty quick for cutting mini blinds to width.

    I need to cut 9 mini blinds in my bedroom, where the blinds are mounted outside the window...I will just be using the “frame” of the blinds to make new window coverings from fabric, that will be mounted INSIDE the window frame (think roman shade-style)...my question is can I use a jig saw? Or a Dremel with a metal cutting wheel? I don’t have access to any other saws...

    • @BlueCollarDIY
      @BlueCollarDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you say the "frame" of the blinds, are you talking about the very top piece? If that's all you'll be cutting, then it is rigid enough that you should be able to cut it with either of those tools. If you'll be cutting the top piece plus the blind material, you're going to want to make sure the ends are secured tightly or you'll have a sloppy cut.

    • @lauriee5200
      @lauriee5200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BlueCollarDIY well, yes & no...yes the top is what I will be using..but I will CAREFULLY take apart the blinds, leaving only 4 slats, that are evenly spaced, the length of the blinds. (I definitely don’t need a saw to cut the 4 slats down to size...I’ve got heavy duty scissors or tin snippers that should easily do that job!) And leaving only the strings that function to pull the blinds up & down. It sounds very complicated but really isnt! There are a handful of tutorials on TH-cam!! Thank u for your reply!

    • @BlueCollarDIY
      @BlueCollarDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lauriee5200 Sounds like you have it nailed down! If you're only cutting a few slats plus the top bar and lower bar of the mini blind, then your saws should do the trick. Just remember they need secured or your saw could wander around. You can also pick up a fine tooth hand saw at Walmart. The saw that comes with the plastic miter boxes in the hardware section are great for this! I think they're about $10 or so.
