I have been trying to find a workflow that works best for me, and your videos have been a source of ideas and inspiration!
I use my iPad with notability for reading, highlighting, and annotating while using goodnotes for notes, summaries, and ideas when I want to dig a little deeper into a paper. I would love to see how you set up and organize yours!
This video was exactly what I was looking for and so well explained! Thank you 😊
Sorry late reply! Thank yoU! Glad you found it helpful
Good to see you're back in it! Love the video idea - I didn't have the option to use these tools during my PhD (From one PhD TH-camr to another XD) Greetings from Ireland! XD
Thanks Daithí!
My ipad just arrived!! I'm watching this again and setting up my ipad :) you are amazing!! Thank you.
Really exciting! Hope it's going well
Great Ma'am! Appreciated
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
This is so useful I’m getting my iPad tomorrow and I’m starting on my dissertation which I’m doing a literature review this is so helpful thank you so much!!!
Glad it was helpful!
This was wonderfully helpful. You’ve inspired me to give GoodNotes another go. I’ve just moved to Mendeley myself and I find it difficult to choose which way to read and take notes! So, Thank you!
I'm so glad this has been helpful!

I'm using a similar setup for my paper reading but I've never seen the paper-like protector you've mentioned and that may be something I'll look into. Thank you for the recommendation!
Definitely does wreck the display a little buuut it feels very nice to write with
@@PhDandProductivity Does it help with glare?
Thanks for your videos. I start my PhD this Spring 21, and your videos have given me a lot of encouragement. Can you do a video about staying organized with notes, plans and everything?
Thanks so much for your comment. Yes I will try to incorporate that into a vlog video for this month!
How is it going with your phd?
Thank you so much for making this and all your other fantastic videos! I was wondering how you manage to keep a track of these notes and annotations alongside Mendeley - like does this involve double work or overlaps. Would also love to hear how you organise all your notes on your iPad in general. Thank you so much once again.
Usually I just include the notes directly in the edited PDF then upload that into mendeley! I need to do a video going through my notes organisation tho!
@@PhDandProductivity Awesome! Thank you for getting back to me. Look forward to that video 🤗
I have a tab S8 but this was really helpful
Please make another video on how to make good notes on iPad. :)
Many Thanks for all the videos.
I will think about how best to do this!

I literally bought an iPad today for similar reasons. Before I can across this vid (also doing a PhD) so another video and how you use it... Would be amazing more insight to how you use your iPad
One of my videos coming soon is how I use my iPad as a PhD student so hope this will help you!
Hey I want to buy a iPad only for one purpose that is reading & annotating PDF files. Should I buy iPad or rather go for large size ereader like Onyx Boox 10.3 inch/13.3 inch device with eink display. Your input will be appreciated.
Hello Thank you for your videos, may I know which app you are using to read the papers ?
Good points. Quite perfect timing actually, I dislike all paper reading apps out there as I cant annotate and also have space to note on the sides (just margin space seems to exist) so decided to make my own app. Got to have an "infinite" margin left and right (up,down) for me to take notes like a whiteboard. Your methodology is good. Chill vid
Thanks Corrie! Yes I think being able to handwrite notes is crucial.
@@PhDandProductivity Enjoying the content, relatable and solid quality! Hope youre well and thanks again!
@@corriedotdev thank you!!! I am v well. Hope you are too.
the best one i found is using one note and importing a pdf
Are there any apps that I can actually find papers on? That I can login through my institution etc?
Hey I'm wondering if I should get GN5, but kinda hesitant bc I've heard it takes up a lot of space. Can you lmk how much does it take for you? And how many documents/pdfs you have in goodnotes?
My use case is pretty similar as yours. Mostly annotating papers, slides, etc. and taking notes sometimes.
It doesn't take up much space for me but I do move the PDFs into Mendeley so they're not stored directly in GoodNotes 5
Hi, I am looking for the screen protector you mentioned in the video. I don't see it in your amazon list. Also, what do you do with eye strains? I am guessing you have to read quite a lot and use the iPad more often. Some screen protectors are there to filter blue light but since I haven't used one, I am not sure if they will be helpful.
I couldn't find on amazon - only directly on the company site - it's called "paperlike" I'm not sure if they have an option with a blue light one.
@@PhDandProductivity thank you! In general, did you face problems with eye strain? What did you do about it?
I thought what is Pam from 'The office US' doing on youtube! giving reviews..
Hello and thanks for the video ! I look at the Amazon link but I couldn’t see the paper-like protection. Can you help me please ?

Hi, you are doing an amazing job documenting your processes. I am a PhD student and I am planning to buy an iPad. Is 64 gigabytes of storage enough for reading research papers and making notes?
it should be more than enough for academic purpose, unless you are using for entertainment consumption like gaming and storing many videos
You can probably complete 3 PhD's with 64 GB
How much memory does your ipad have?
I was hoping that there is a program which gives you a bigger margin around the pages for more space for notes.
Check out One Note. It has infinite canvas
one notes or liquid text. the later one has super cool features but the actual usabilty and writing feeling suck so idk, its free to try out though.
I went ahead and invested in an Android Tab. I regret it so much now lol 😅
I’m sure there’s a similar version to GoodNotes 😊
I did not understand if you can upload a PDF paper into that app. Could you explain? tks
There is an option in goodnotes to import a document!
hi, i was just wondering how much memory your ipad has? i want to buy one but i'm not sure how much memory i'll need for reading papers. thanks!
Same here
I'm pretty sure mine is 256 GB. I usually read them on iPad, add in my notes as shown in the video then I upload into mendeley so they aren't saved onto my device.
@@PhDandProductivity so you upload to Mendeley after having made notes in the margins etc and then use Mendeley as your reference manager? I've never found a good work flow for reading papers. I was thinking of looking into liquid text but not sure how it would work with Mendeley
Where can I listen to the podcast you mentioned about?

How tu maintain the key point from a ppr
@@afsheenmaroof6209 the abstract usually contains the key points
I have ipad air 4 and i have tried to read papper on it, but i cannot focus while im reading. The light from the screen is too strong, i have already reduce the brightness and change white point..., but it didnt work for me. I cannot focus, and my eyes feel tired
I have a screen protector from the company Paperlike which makes it more similar to looking at a Kindle screen and a lot easier for reading!
What pen did you purchase for your iPad for note taking?
It's just a normal apple pencil. But it's the screen protector that's most important and I use this one! paperlike.com/phdandproductivity1
@@PhDandProductivity thanks for the response! What about your case? It looks secure. Just a regular otter box? Sales rep asked me which one for iPad 4th generation and I gave them the size.
Thank you for your video. I want to buy an iPad for reading academic papers. Which iPad should I buy? 128gb or 256gb?
Helloooo, I think mine is 256gb. I usually will upload the annotated PDF to my laptop when I'm finished reading so I don't find I need that much space on the iPad
Do you use bibtex or mendeley?
Both! Mendeley to store papers and bibtex for citations
I see Muchen glass, I like
Hi. What apps are you using to read papers in ur iPad?
Goodnotes5
Hi.what is the name of app? GoodNotes?
GoodNotes 5
Like opening a pdf on a windows tab opens up in the pdf app, do u use some other specific app in your iPad that allows you to add empty pages or edit the overall document?
Nevermind this got answered in other comments - goodnotes
Hey kiera! I've been desperately looking for an old video of yours that I can't find! It was about how you organize all your research paper readings in. You had all the categories on the left etc. Do you have such a video, and if so could you link it here 🤩
is this the basic ipad or ipad pro?
Basic iPad!
Which application was it
Goodnotes 5
I’m a PHD! ( if you know you know😁)
