  • Reading a scientific paper can be quite a daunting task, but I've recently come across a technique that makes reading and understanding these papers a lot easier!

    Where was this during my university years?! This is a great way of organizing your thoughts while reading through a scientific paper. I also struggle with information retention, especially when i've read over a hundred papers on roughly the same subject!

    I'm a "do your own research: guy, and I found this video tremendously helpful. I've found that when I have a question about the world, it's probably already been answered! Scientific papers have settled bar arguments for me, but I never really approached them systematically. I will integrate some elements of your process into my own, so I have a more rigorous understanding of what I'm reading. Now if I could only master calculus...

  • @Dman9fp

    Good video though in general I might skim/ quick check the methods & focus on the abstract, intro & conclusion first time around. A solid conclusion is crucial to understanding the discoveries/ why they're relevant imo, & short "half-assed" conclusions make me feel skeptical of the whole paper

    • @TellysMarineTales
      @TellysMarineTales  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! I also get very frustrated when the discussion is really long-winded - if you can't give your paper a good punchy ending then I don't bother reading it.

    Great video! Am still in college but next Wednesday i will be going on my first field course( analysis of biodiversity ..etc) and write a report at the end. Thanks for your video was very handy XD love it. Btw i would like to ask you is it really required to have biology to do marine science cause i do not study but having be doing it in small classes but i can manage and learn very fast.

    • @TellysMarineTales
      @TellysMarineTales  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! Good luck with your first field course, hope its going to be amazing! I don't quite understand your question - are you wanting to study marine science or to get a job in marine science? Because if you want to study, your classes will be very helpful in getting admitted to study, but you would have to double check the requirements of the university. If you are wanting to work in marine science, I would say it would be very difficult to get a job without some kind of formal training in the biological field... I hope that helps?

    If this is truly the way you always read papers, why do you not make a template of this to work with? Ruling those tables just seems like the biggest waste of time if you are doing it over and over again. Would it not be better to make a template in Word and print a stack of these ready to go?

      Thanks! Now that's a trickier question! Some tips from me is to get rid of distraction - no emails, social media, phone etc., use the Pomodoro technique where you work for 25mins and break for 5, setting a timer really encourages you to get going. And just start, its' much easier once you've just started :)

    • @TellysMarineTales
      @TellysMarineTales  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That really depends on so may many factors - how long is the matter you're reading, what is the purpose of your reading (do you need to go into a lot of details or are you just skimming the paper), how much you have read before. So impossible to say :)
