UK farmer losing £35K/month! - Why dairy farms are dying

  • Steve Evans has a dairy herd in Pembrokeshire and he's losing thousands of pounds every month because of Bovine Tb. He wants his cows free of the notifiable disease so he can get back to some form of normality and certainty. We join him as vets are onsite doing 2 different tests which will give him a more accurate idea of how many of his cows are carriers. However by doing so he risks losing 70% of his 500 strong herd and going out of business. He explains the frustrations of dairy farming in Wales. Here they don't allow the control of wildlife to minimise the risk of Tb infection which can happen when the cows are out in the pastures grazing during spring and summer.

    The first farmers I encountered was 40 years ago, under Mrs Thatcher's government. It was the son of a dairy farmer who was a college friend, his parents were on the brink of giving up farming then. The government doesn't care about food security, they are more interested in forcing us to eat expensive highly processed food.

    Some of these requirements appear designed to drive the farmers out of business, rather than provide a stable food supply. Food and water security should be top of the list for government priorities.

    UK food security doesn't appear to register with Government as a long term requirement. Wild life is more important, than food security. Food is to cheap for producers to survive and until food becomes short it will remain so. The eco brigade is also not helping by encouraging re wilding, tree planting and similar activities. The only certainty is we can’t eat trees or re wilded areas. OR WILD RE INTRODUCED ANIMALS.

If we deem it necessary to impose these domestically then imports which fall short of the same standards should not be permitted & all foreign producers should have to be regularly inspected by British inspectors to certify that they are fit to import these products to Britain. Food production on a large scale can cost millions in investment and they'll be on a similar percentage profits (a bit higher due to economies of scale) to a small scale farm, but they can also lose a far higher amount of money in a month. BUT, they cannot do it for many months before the bank wants the loan paying and they don't have the income going into the bank, then they go bankrupt.

    The amount of new farms in Somerset and new sheds going up all the time, it doesn’t look to me like a failing business, they all complain but then seem to afford brand new cars and buy a few extra fields. Seems to me the only ones that don’t complain are the ones that farm along side nature. They produce the same amount on the same land with less input and they are all happy. Maybe change your ways a little bit and try some new/different things and it might go a bit different for you!

      Are these true farmers you are talking about that make a living, or hobby farmers who have other income that they use to live on while tinkering with farming as a hobby? There are so many variables. If you have prime farm land next to an influential urban are, you can set up a boutique driven business with exorbitant prices. This is a very small subset of farms and should not be used as a blueprint to force other farms to follow the same model. As an example, I have 20 acres of designated agricultural land sitting fallow. I have a standing offer to all the experts such as you to use it for free, since they seem to know how to turn a profit on it. Many also complain that they can't afford land to start farming. 5 years on, and still no takers, and they wouldn't even have any costs associated with buying or renting land.

    • @spencersanderson1894
      @spencersanderson1894 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ickster23 Yes they are true farmers, watch a video called “farming with nature: the cholderton way” that will show you the type of farmers I’m on about. Off the top of my head there is also Fir Farm in Gloucestershire, they are showing people how to do it well on a large scale. And I’m ok I work on a National Trust site that has a farm of over 150 Acres, I know there are ways of doing it right and making money whilst also complying with nature rules and even going above and beyond what they say is necessary and still getting good results, in some cases better results. If what you do isn’t working then change what you do slightly, take out the single species grass mixtures and add in a herbal lay that will also help keep vet visits down. There’s so many ways. Those boutique little things you’re on about don’t provide enough and for the whole population of the country and should certainly not be used to do so.
