UK farmer losing £35K/month! - Why dairy farms are dying

- Steve Evans has a dairy herd in Pembrokeshire and he's losing thousands of pounds every month because of Bovine Tb. He wants his cows free of the notifiable disease so he can get back to some form of normality and certainty. We join him as vets are onsite doing 2 different tests which will give him a more accurate idea of how many of his cows are carriers. However by doing so he risks losing 70% of his 500 strong herd and going out of business. He explains the frustrations of dairy farming in Wales. Here they don't allow the control of wildlife to minimise the risk of Tb infection which can happen when the cows are out in the pastures grazing during spring and summer.
The first farmers I encountered was 40 years ago, under Mrs Thatcher's government. It was the son of a dairy farmer who was a college friend, his parents were on the brink of giving up farming then. The government doesn't care about food security, they are more interested in forcing us to eat expensive highly processed food.
Some of these requirements appear designed to drive the farmers out of business, rather than provide a stable food supply. Food and water security should be top of the list for government priorities.

We as an industry have worked very hard to get the British people 'on side', it will be a last resort to demonstrate and inconvenience our population and pretty pointless in my opinion, perhaps when the shortage of home produced food comes (later this year) politicians may have a change of mind and direction?
Better still move to Europe and farm in a diverse market, yes challenges but a wider market both buying and selling
I understand. I'm 53 years old and have been in this industry my whole life. I pray everyday to find a way out. It's a living hell.
Why
Im 43 mate, in Australia, fourth generation dairy farmer. Just had to stop after a milk processor went in to administration and left us unpaid for milk.
It was a rough decision, but I thought changing at 43 was easier than pushing on and switching course in my 50's or older
I'm 48, got two non farming jobs to aim to start up farming. Currently 75% of my combined income I'm putting into getting myself set up. Many said don't bother it isn't worth it, I didn't listen n now bought two part farms.

Thank you for highlighting these issues. My uncle was a dairy farmer 30+ years ago. It was a VERY hard life back then. It hasn't got any easier since. We are a country that has drowned in top down bureaucratic nonsense.
Bureaucratic *fraud.
Farmers are the hardest working people in Britain, for what they invest, and for the hours they put in , The returns are pittance supermarkets, screw them to the ground and the governments don’t care! when a farmer makes a mistake, he pays for it over and over again when a banker makes a mistake. The taxpayer supports them keeping their bonuses high, and there income enormous. The whole nation, particularly politicians need to understand what fair means!
Subsidies support the farmers . Farmers voted to remove EU subsidies . They got what they wanted . Sovereignty

The government don't give a crap about anyone in the UK, the country is being destroyed while we just stand and watch. If you want something done you need to get together and force change.

Better food, local, healthier and you support your local farmers. I've been buying most of my food from a farmshop at a dairy farm I milk cows at in the mornings and since I've done that I feel alot better. protect them by helping them an ethical job that has nothing to do with stealing from animals, using them or killing them! many farmers have done that already, its possible.
DO you know from which farm I can buy non pasteurised and non homogenised milk in UK?
Farmers need to go back to the old fashioned way and sell direct to the public and miss out the middle man (shopping centres)
The government don't care like they don't care with so many other aspects of life! That's the problem!
Any unnecessary red tape should be ignored with a push back?
I’m a Canadian dairy farmer. This is unimaginable. I wish them all well. It would be devastating if it was like this on our farm.

really interesting and informative, thank you and good luck 🤞
UK food security doesn't appear to register with Government as a long term requirement. Wild life is more important, than food security. We will be importing more and more food from countries with much lower animal welfare standards than the UK's. As long as it doesn't happen here, our Government seems not to care!
I agree wholeheartedly. I think they are running the 'Control the food, control the people' program and the rewilding project is part of that reducing the access to food plan in this country. I wonder what the carbon footprint on food imports is? They never seem to want to discuss that!
If our gov keep going the way they are, there won't be any wildlife left we'll have eaten it .

Mad country when badgers come before humans. Badgers were protected to stop the sport of badger baiting when in fact they should of just increased sentences for people caught baiting. Why arent rabbits protected if badgers are? Its nonsense.
I sadly think this bagder protection is lobbied by the external influences to stop dairy farming its a 3 letter organisation that I hate to say. I still have hope something good will happen to stop that

As an ex farmer, food security isn’t high up the agenda at this time. Sadly it can all be imported which is the view politicians in general are taking. It’ll be a problem when they can’t import. Food is to cheap for producers to survive and until food becomes short it will remain so. The eco brigade is also not helping by encouraging re wilding, tree planting and similar activities. The only certainty is we can’t eat trees or re wilded areas. OR WILD RE INTRODUCED ANIMALS.

Fascinating reading through all these comments, it’s not surprising that people who have no experience of farming think like they do! many farming businesses have been built up over generations with dedication and hard work, but why would a lot of ordinary people care to hoots about that they’ve got their own cost of living problems. I don’t think the farmer is thinking about them too much! we’ve all got problems! yes, the farmer is so important for supplying food but also a dustbin man to take away the rubbish doctor to see you when you’re ill and mechanic to mend your car. Dairy farm have been dying for years, but strangely they are still there.
I know 2 farmers who are giving up dairy farming & just going over to beef. It’s not what they want to do but they can’t afford to subsidise the supermarkets with milk at less than cost any longer. In one case he is breaking even, but the milking parlour is worn out & he can’t afford or justify the hundreds of thousands of pounds to replace it as he may never even cover the cost never mind make a profit on it.
That's good , there will be less milk produced and the price will go up .
@@sarahann530 sadly not, it will just increase the imports of cheap milk, produced with much lower animal welfare & food hygiene/ standards standards, from countries which allow these practices which UK farmers are banned from using.
So you end with a lower quality product for the same price because the supermarkets certainly won’t take any of the loss themselves.
@@jonathanhicks140 But I thought Brexit meant you made your own rules ,controlled your own Borders?
@@sarahann530 Hardly, we are still tied up with regulations - & have always had some of the highest standards in food safety & animal welfare which, unlike many others, have actually been enforced on British farmers. It is a scandal that we do this still whilst imports of inferior quality & standards are brought in from other producers who are not bound by the same regulations. If we deem it necessary to impose these domestically then imports which fall short of the same standards should not be permitted & all foreign producers should have to be regularly inspected by British inspectors to certify that they are fit to import these products to Britain. This should include the excessive use of antibiotics & growth hormones to fast grow cheap chickens in lousy conditions, or sub standard battery reared pigs.

I'm staggered how much money there is in dairy farming, to be able to lose £35k a month, my annual salary, and be able to stay in business for more than a month.
The company lost that money, not an individual. Cash flow (not profit) for a 500 cow dairy herd is going to be in the millions per year. It's not a sustainable loss, but it's not unusual in a farming enterprise at that scale.
Yep, it's a variation on the theme of lies, damned lies and statistics. Quoting a figure that means little but suits your aim of getting more taxpayer dollar or justifying a price rise.
It's called an over draft , no doubt mortgaged to the hilt , keep going until prices rise or the bank says that's it , STOP.
The cost of running a farm that size and feeding the cows everyday, fuel, feed, finances it's thousands of pounds a day just to run the farm so yes it's quite easy to lose a lot of money in dairy it's so risky @@user-fm6lj4jh3n

500 cows should pulling in over a million quid a year, eating grass. Should be pretty profitable
But what about the TB cost that keep culling herd and nothing to the badgers should not get culled too
Can you not use working livestock guardian dogs to drive off the predators, or in this case badgers?
Brexit, farmers wanted it.
Why is TB such a big deal, there's a vaccine. Is this farmer saying vaccines don't work, is he an antivax ?
Can you say BREXIT?
Loosing 35k a month !
So beforehand they were making an extra 35k a month !
You're not in business then. Food production on a large scale can cost millions in investment and they'll be on a similar percentage profits (a bit higher due to economies of scale) to a small scale farm, but they can also lose a far higher amount of money in a month. BUT, they cannot do it for many months before the bank wants the loan paying and they don't have the income going into the bank, then they go bankrupt.

The amount of new farms in Somerset and new sheds going up all the time, it doesn’t look to me like a failing business, they all complain but then seem to afford brand new cars and buy a few extra fields. Seems to me the only ones that don’t complain are the ones that farm along side nature. They produce the same amount on the same land with less input and they are all happy. Maybe change your ways a little bit and try some new/different things and it might go a bit different for you!
Are these true farmers you are talking about that make a living, or hobby farmers who have other income that they use to live on while tinkering with farming as a hobby? There are so many variables. If you have prime farm land next to an influential urban are, you can set up a boutique driven business with exorbitant prices. This is a very small subset of farms and should not be used as a blueprint to force other farms to follow the same model. As an example, I have 20 acres of designated agricultural land sitting fallow. I have a standing offer to all the experts such as you to use it for free, since they seem to know how to turn a profit on it. Many also complain that they can't afford land to start farming. 5 years on, and still no takers, and they wouldn't even have any costs associated with buying or renting land.
@@ickster23 Yes they are true farmers, watch a video called “farming with nature: the cholderton way” that will show you the type of farmers I’m on about. Off the top of my head there is also Fir Farm in Gloucestershire, they are showing people how to do it well on a large scale. And I’m ok I work on a National Trust site that has a farm of over 150 Acres, I know there are ways of doing it right and making money whilst also complying with nature rules and even going above and beyond what they say is necessary and still getting good results, in some cases better results. If what you do isn’t working then change what you do slightly, take out the single species grass mixtures and add in a herbal lay that will also help keep vet visits down. There’s so many ways. Those boutique little things you’re on about don’t provide enough and for the whole population of the country and should certainly not be used to do so.
