In the Mid 70's you could get cool stuff.
Guns made by Singer sowing machine, Remington Rand, M1 grands, M1 carbine all for a hundred or so and imports sks, 8 mm Mauser etc.dirt cheap.
      I had a 1903 Springfield in 30 03 caliber I paid 25 or 50 bucks for because the neighbor guy selling it couldn't find 30 03 ammo.
Took it out dropped a stripper clip of 30 06 in it and was shooting water filled prestone antifreeze jugs at 800 yards off the flip up iron sight and a rest.
I kinda felt bad about not telling him 30 06 ammo was the same as 30 03 ammo but he was always an abusive dick to us youngsters.

My first rifle at 16 years old was a Norinco type 56 I believe with the under folder bayonet. Got in early 1987. It was around $350. My dad bought it for me. I still have it. I got all my Norinco stuff before the 89 and 92 and 94 bans.I was lucky. Summer jobs helped.

The Calico with the rotary mags was very unique. Would like to see some others from that era return with improvements. The Feather AT is another that comes to mind that seems like it would be easy to make again. I would even be thrilled to see a domestically made SKS so long as it could be done at an affordable price.

When I was 18(‘87) I went into the Army and it was the first time I had ever handled a firearm. Problem was, as a medic I was told that my interest in firearms and other weapons was “antithetical” to being a medic. This was from my military leadership. When I reenlisted to be an EOD Technician in ‘91, I was called a “traitor” and a “heathen” for daring to leave the medical profession. I didn’t buy my first firearm until almost 10 years later. Now all the cool firearms I could have bought years ago are $$$$$. Wack!

Back when the single shot rifle caliber uppers came out to replace the slide, a tuned trigger on a Colt 1911 was about the best you could get. IHMSA was really growing, and that's where the idea came from. I almost got one in .223 Remington for varmint hunting, but wound up getting a Remington XP-100 in .221 Fireball instead, because scope mounting was much easier. I still have it.😊 I stopped shooting it when I got my Contender. I also have an AMT Hardballer Longslide .45ACP, with the box and 2 original magazines. "Glorious results of a mis-spent youth."😉

Two other honorable mentions would be the Mark 45 Thompson wannabe and the D-max in both 9x19 and 45acp. The 80's definitely had some guns that looked like they came from home workshops. Wouldn't touch a Hac-7 back in the day and now when you see one it commands a pretty steep price.

It starts with nuclear war between the USSR and Western Allies and takes place in the USA. So in these times The Prepper wouldn't have the same ring or selling point to it

Like the old Daisy VL22 back in the late 60's. It could shoot 22 pellets like normal, but also could use what was one of the first modern caseless rounds which consisted of a heavier pellet with a solid chunk of propellent on the back of it that was ignited by the high temperature compressed air from the spring cylinder. They only made them for a very short while before the ATF came in and pointed out that it was actually a firearm and that they would have to be licensed for it. So they dropped it like a hot potato, but there are a fair bunch out there. You can still occasionally find the caseless ammo for them too, but it's REALLY rare now. I don't know how much of it would still even work. I had a box of it a long time ago, but misplaced it at some point. Would have been pretty darn neat to have. A whole lot safer than squirting WD40 or something in your standard spring gun for that diesel boost, lol...

A friend of mine bought the Bushmaster ARM pistol when it came out. At that time, it was being pushed as a similar weapon as the Sidewinder SMG that had the same feature of the pistol grip that could rotate. The Sidewinder could be attached to a shoulder harness and the long SMG mag cold be rotated to lay across the back while the pistol grip laid flat against your side.

The reason we didn't have as many shootings in the 80's, I believe has a lot to with the absence of Social Media and the Internet. If you wanted to learn about firearms you had to READ about them. The oddball guns such as the Calico, AR-7, and stuff like that were prominent in movies and T.V. The Walther PP series wouldn't be as iconic if it weren't for the Bond movies. I remember before the Assault Weapons ban we had a commemorative Springfield M1A1 that my dad bought. He got a bunch of magazines, but we never fired it. I ended up selling it after his passing, because I didn't see the point in a gun that would lose it's value as soon as it was fired. I kept his Mannlicher M98K in .30-06 though, because he had it custom built and the length of pull is two inches longer than most other people (he was a pinch under 7 feet tall and had a wing span to match). I could lose every gun in my safe and I would be like "oh well" but that one would hurt.

I remember the Bushmaster obination. The story I was told when I was in the USAF, the Air Force was kinda looking for a PDW for downed pilots. Bushmaster went after the contract with this. You can see some actual advantages from AR mags and ammo, to short to fit in the survival kit. Might be just rumor mill but, I remember it a bit more than rumors. Of course they never went this way and Bushmaster decided to try the civilian market.

An old timer father of my buddy back in the mid 90s told me the best way to remove cosmoline was to put the gun on a brick in a black trash bag and set it out in the summer sun all day.
I never tried it, but he had a ton of old russian stuff that was all pretty clean.

Really enjoyed this episode, ,normally don't care for a lot of just conversation but this brought back a lot of memories. My pal's and myself started this never ending love of firearms in the 70s, listening to you both batting those glorious times back and forth reminded me of what we were buying next. Thanks....by the way the photo on your page looks like a young Clint Eastwood.

God damn. When I hear those stories of $300 Saiga/Norinco/Polytech, etc. AKs in the early 2000s(when I first turned 18), it almost makes me sick to my stomach(and don't even get me started on ammo.)
It's even worse living in CT now, and knowing that none of these crazy gun laws in our state are ever going sway.

I was there and did buy a bunch of them and it still makes me sick thinking about it like I missed out on this or that one when they were actually affordable

I remember the 9mm nighthawk I tried to find one after I got in the Army for sale. I definitely remember it from ASG magazine, from my youthful years that inspired many of my interests.

There is something I would like to see both the Firearms Manufacturers and the 3d Printer Hobbyists break. That is the price of PEEK plastics that have been around for over thirty years. This video talks about artificial inflation, but another thing people don't talk about is prices kept artificially high. PEEK plastics are an example of this.

Man, I got so lucky when I bought that bushmaster arm pistol, I had no clue what it was and neither did the guy, I have him $200 for it and we were both happy. After the gun show was over and I finally got home I did some research on it and then I was extremely excited, I was planning on keeping it because I like old guns with strange stories, I had originally looked up to see if it was broken because it twisted, then I started looking looking to see if it there was ever a stock for it, that’s when I found an article about it’s history and development, it’s so cool but when a guy offered me 2k for it I couldn’t say no. If bushmaster brought that gun back or at least its operating system on a modern platform and no twisting parts, they could have been the leader in gun sales in the USA. Think about now how everyone wants a piston ar15 without a buffer tube, they had it decades ago. It shoots really nice even with the short barrel.

There's a lot of cool stuff, both in the past and overseas, that many of us would love to see either come back or come over. Unfortunately the US consoooomer is so stuck in their ways that they'll scoff at the eventual $1,000-$1,500 price tag that new and interesting designs ultimately command, and then proceed to spend roughly that amount on their 17th AR or Glock.
We are our own worst enemy in this regard.

Back in the day I didn’t want an AR-15 because the Colt was too expensive. There were cast lowered AR’s that looked too sketch. I was a solid AK lover back then. MAADI AK my first and still have it.
