      Actually rouge was used because many, many more people had generally poor constitution. Medicine has cured so much that now very few people faint when they flush red, but back then many people fainted for reasons a plenty. Anemia, bad nutrition, nervousness, I mean, at this time we had iron lungs.

    I have to ask: what was so wrong with any of these rules?
    I hate pantyhose in the summer and stockings in the winter, but when I go to work in an office I wear them.
    Sitting up straight is just good for posture and when you're with others it just showing respect.
    The blush is basically the same as now. You pick a color that goes with your complexion, you're not getting hooker red blush and putting it on your face, it's a lighter pink and it's a natural look. It was even popular in 2017 with the pinks and peaches coming out.
    We call a girdle spanks today.
    The thing at the end about it's more important to treat people with respect was a little weird because what do you think Etiquette is?

      because in 2020 people want freedom from everything which is nice in many ways , I agree .
      But again certain things though portrayed as rules weren't rules but discipline one should have for their life even when its not a rule.
      For example , keeping quiet while eating food might be strict rule in houses and teens might ask for freedom.
      But as i grew and started reading ayurveda , my indigestion problems , and just about mindful eating . I learnt one should be very mindful while eating . Its not like u have to zip your mouth but just be silent when chewing food.
      But i also agree some rules in the past were too much and everyone is different so we should definitely find a common ground where everyone can live happily with their own disciplines without bashing anyone and showing superiority. 🙏

      Wearing stockings at all times is more like a proper appearance type of thing and it was very fashionable for ladies to wear them and there were different stockings for different seasons. Rouge and lipstick back then was also categorized based on your hair since reds were more for blondes and brunettes would have cooler colors like pink. I think when sitting up straight, it makes you look more proper and professional because it makes you look your best rather than slouching and looking bad. The 50s were the last year of when manners and how you looked, acted, behaved even just around your children or parents or even by yourself since by the 60s.....everything went downhill. I wish we just brought the 50s style back.

    • @masha7377
      @masha7377 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Yess! I got so annoyed by that feminist talk at the end. I mean, girdles are outdated and so is rouge-ing your face up, but we could all do with a few more manners in this world. So often when I'm at a restaurant or on the train, I cringe at how some people behave. Men had ridiculous grooming "rules" as well, up to the length of their cravatte and length of the trousers. Btw, those weren't set in stone, that's just a book written by a wealthy bored women, but still more inspiring than 50 shades of grey.

    I think men had strict social rules as well. White collar men, wore well pressed slacks and ties to work, and had their hair slick, and in place, and there were particular ways that it wasn't considered proper to treat a lady, so stringent social rules weren't just limited to females. There was a lot of social pressure on middle class people in general.

      There’s just as much “social pressure” now to be PC than there was for 50s people to “act proper” quite frankly. Men liked their hair slicked and in place regardless of social class (greasers anyone)? Although you were expected to follow work outfit white collar conventions you were being paid and paid handsomely (enough for a house, wife and kids) to do so it was more than worth it.

      Not feeling sorry for myself, but I can remember coming home from work and hearing nothing but "What's for supper?"
      Nobody gave me a proper greeting but the dog.
      I do think that in a lot of ways everything was better when people had clearly defined roles like "breadwinner" and "housekeeper". ("Housekeeper" is fine if you're properly appreciated and valued for what you do.)
      These days it often ends up with the woman working and still being expected to be a 50's housewife.

    • @ana-maria8350
      @ana-maria8350 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stella Waldvogel No, housekeeper is not “fine” if you want a career. That’s why women protested against those roles, they were left without a choice. Today, you can very well be a stay-at-home wife if that’s what you want, just find a partner who’s fine with taking care of the whole family financially by himself. And you can even reverse the roles: the man is the housekeeper, and the woman is the breadwinner. That’s the beauty of it.
      Also, if you’re contributing financially, than your partner should do their share of housechores. You have to make yourself respected.

My grandpa (who I love and adore) was at our place every day of the week except for in the weekend, and when he saw that our parents arrived home he'd yell all our names and then all the children would line up in rank of age. My grandpa would open the door, welcome our parents home and then we'd welcome them home ourselves one by one in rank of age.
    This tradition came to an end when my grandpa died (I was 16), so I took it upon myself to be the greeter after that until the day I left my family

      Corsets are actually fairly often prescribed for people with Sclerosis because they fit under the clothing and can be custom made to a person's measurements. If you know how to breathe from the diaphragm instead of the chest, one can run, ride a horse, shoot a bow, fence, and SING in a well-laced corset. {Speaking from personal experience. Male corsets are glorious.}

You don't just pat some blush around your face, call it done, and ask your friends if you look like a clown! You don't just use blush/rouge as 50's makeup, and call that done either.

    As somebody who dresses in vintage every single day for years I have to say, at least they tried. But they really missed the mark here. To start with the obvious, the girdles are far too modern, and tights were not invented until 1959, meaning that unless they're going for that very specific pocket of time they should be wearing stockings with a garterbelt. Not to mention you should never base your assessment of a time period based on a singular book. It was not as if these "rules" were strictly followed all the time by every single woman. The book simply takes things to an absolute extreme. Yes, it would be uncommon to see a woman without a full face of makeup, but at the same it was not as if women were constantly held to a textbook image of themselves. Not to mention the video they constantly show clips of is from 1946, in which fashion was quite different from the mid to late fifties.

    Sitting down into a chair in a skirt or dress, especially a very full and/or very long one, definitely requires a surprising amount of technique otherwise you can end up with a major wardrobe malfunction, or a rip, or even falling on the floor really hard. A gentleman holding a lady's chair evolved because the chair needed to be held safely while the lady backed up against it, aimed herself, and lowered onto it. Without someone to hold the it, the chair would go sliding and the lady would end up on the floor.

      Chocolat Tarte, that's the way it used to be. I remember getting my first office job and being surprised that some of the women did not wear pantyhose/stockings with dresses, even in the dead of winter. My mother and grandmother always stressed the importance of looking well-groomed for school/work/church and believed, as did many who came-of-age before the 60s sexual revolution, that women who did not wear stockings/pantyhose were 'tacky', 'loose', or 'trashy'. It took me a while to get with the times and toss out the pantyhose. Thankfully, women have the freedom now to dress however they wish!

    So...not stockings and not a girdle, since they're wearing pantyhose and...I don't know, some kind of shaper? Not a girdle, anyway. Real stockings would need to be held up by a girdle or a garter, so if they'd actually bothered to get stockings, not pantyhose, that mistake likely wouldn't have happened.
    And no, you wouldn't see the undergarments because you'd also be wearing a slip, which would cover them. I've worn girdles and stockings for full days, they're no more uncomfortable than wearing moden-day shapewear.

    • @sharid76
      @sharid76 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      None of it was done as a "routine" here. And PANTYHOSE have absolutely nothing to do with wearing real thigh high stockings and a girdle to hold them up. Both can still be found in one form or another, especially the stockings, which can still be purchased from practically every major (and even some minor) department stores and women's shops. Yes, I've seen them. You had to have known what you were doing back then to buy them too. About a half dozen factors came in to play when determining size and style. Not just height and weight. But, very little if any of these things were researched or even taken into consideration, which made the whole thing come out more like a farce than an actual well researched project. Brushing some blush on your face, asking your friends if you look like a clown, and calling it done, certainly doesn't a "project" make!

    • @Texture2112
      @Texture2112 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Shari, point understood, but with regards to "Stockings", "Thigh highs" & "Pantyhose"; Pantyhose actually were around in the 1950's, they just were not called "Pantyhose" yet. This can be seen in movies from the 1950's like "stilk Stockings" (where Pantyhose were used because they wanted to show more leg, and "Daddy Long Legs", ... (this can also be seen in the leotard scenes in both movies) & various others. (The year 1960 didn't 'hit' at midnight and then 'Pantyhose' were born) (I know you are not saying that) :) ...numerous companies & loners were trying to make a 'nylon' version of 'tights' (one of them was Ann Miller requesting this to "Willies of Hollywood"). Thigh highs were not popular in the 50's or the 60's as the rubber / silicone grips were not used (i see you simply meant 'stockings'), so stockings (requiring garter belt) were still the most popular. It was approx' 1961 to '63 when Pantyhose (with the name or not) became more popular than stockings.

      They can still be had from vintage lingerie shops, even online. And I DO mean the styles, not that they are true vintage. It would be highly unlikely at this point that any of the real rubber portions wouldn't have deteriorated by now if they were true vintage wear. Besides, they used to be worn by SOME women in lieu of panties! 🤤 Who'd want to wear that after someone else?? 😲

    We were pretty obsessed with our silhouettes in the 50’s. we never really got rid of girdles, more like adapted them with tight clothing styles.
    Rouge was used because pale foundation was common, and being pale was a fad for the rich. Rouge made them look less dead.
    Stockings were hard to get since fabric was in shortage, so again a sign or wealth.
    Don’t cross at the knee, you cross at the ankles or ankles together and off to the side. Knees always together.
    Good manners have really been there for a century or two. Again, a show or wealth. The buttering thing was 1. To protect her makeup that always came off gross. 2. Often you wouldn’t have a lot of butter so it was best to take sparingly and 3. Diets
    I know a lot of this seemed pretty ridiculous but men had stupid etiquette too. Maybe not the same style but there was some silly things
    Personally I don’t think etiquette was a bad thing and I do promote it, but some things could change. But I find improper etiquette when faced with new people or people of different status to be rather insulting and rude.

    Women in the 1950s had whole routines for their make up, it was put on in certain ways, with certain products, and was much more involved! If you're going to do 50's makeup, 💄then for heavens sake, *DO* 50's makeup! There are whole books 📚 on the subject, some very well done, with guidelines, pictures and other information, to show you how to do it all properly! *Study* a book 📘 about *how* to do it, before you get on camera 📽and start blathering along about "rouge." My grandmothers both used real rouge almost all their lives, and they knew how to do it well. It never looked flakey, or fake, and it suited their coloring. But then, it wasn't the only thing they did, either. There was a whole multi-product routine they both followed day and night too, to keep their skin nice.
    And as far as how the girdle -stocking thing went, it didnt!! They all *CHEATED* with pantyhose!! 😲 There was *NO* Pantyhose until the 1960's with the advent of mini skirts. Stocking tops and garters would always show under those short hemlines, and pushed the mass production of what had been around since the 1940's, but only for Hollywood actresses and dancers! Only if you were a dancer/movie star in Hollywood, and wore them in the movies, so a girdle and garters wouldn't show in short costumes, or of very full skirts that showed your matching panties when you danced and your skirts flew up and out. Thank dancer Ann Miller for that, back in the 1940's! She's the one who designed the dancers silk and later nylon tights just for that. They were a special made garment, and were very expensive, for costumers in the movies to rely on when they designed movie costumes.
    It would have made completely perfect sense to tie the wearing of the girdle in with the wearing of stockings. Stockings - thigh hi's some call them - are still available for sale in any women's hosiery department in just about any department store, right down to K-Mart! You absolutely *HAD* to have a girdle of some kind (or a garter belt, at the very least) with garters attached to the special little hooks around the bottom of the girdle to hold your stockings *UP!* You had to put on the bra and panties first, then making sure your garters were attached properly, with usually two garters for each leg, one in the front, and one in the back, and THEN you rolled up the stockings one at a time in your hands until you get down to the ankle part and the foot part is still loose at the bottom, THEN you slipped each one on, one at a time, over your foot, and working it up slowly and carefully past your ankles, up over your calves and up to your thighs, where you get to the top. Then, holding on to the stocking in one hand, you reach around under your thigh for the back garter, slip the stocking top in between the two pieces of the "catch" and fasten it shut, making sure you have enough of the stocking top trapped inside the catch to hold it firmly. Then, you can do the same with the garter at the front of your leg. And you're ready to repeat the process with the other leg. Remember, the stockings of the 1950's weren't stretchy at all, because they hadn't yet devised a way to produce latex fibers that could be woven into the fabric that makes up stockings, so they were made in many different sizes, for the length of the legs above and below the knee, as well as the thickness of your legs, plus shoe size to account for foot sizes! They ALSO were what they called "Full Fashioned," meaning the legs weren't made like a tube, they were flat first, and then turned into a leg-shaped tube by sewing them together, leaving that infamous seam up the back of the legs, as well as a darker reinforced toe, sole of the foot, right up the back of the heel, up close to the ankle! Because the nylon yarn used to weave the stockings had no stretch, they were constantly developing a "baggy" look around the ankles, as well as the knees! Not good, but there wasn't anything that could be done about it until they designed the nylon stocking with stretchy yarns in them to give them some "snap back" properties.
    The back part of the heels showed above the back of your shoe, and came in several shapes, each of which had names. Like a "Cuban heel" for instance. Some were blocky, or square, while others finished off the heel in a point that joined right in with the seam, like it was pointing right up the back of your leg! 😉 As for those seams, they could be made in different colors to be worn with different shades of fashionable evening wear, by changing the color of the thread used to mechanically sew up the stockings at the back. And they were definitely meant to be seen, but *never* crooked! Seams were expected to always be "arrow straight," and if they werent, then that made you quite the slob if you did it regularly, like you didn't care.
    SO, you had to be able to pick out the proper shade of hosiery for your dress, suit or skirt with which you intend to wear them, or just for regular daily wear; the style and color of the heel and the seam; the "denier" or sheerness/thickness of the material woven to make them, whether they were extra sheer for evening wear with formal wear, up to and including what they called "Service weight" which was a heavier, less see-through fabric for daily wear at home, likely doing housework, cooking, etc. This was affected by how many little sharp needles were used at any given time in the knitting machinery to produce them. Then there is the type of fabric in itself, PLUS the biggie - your size! Short/petite, average, tall, extra tall for length; then junior, average, full or "outsized" (for "plus sized" or heavy, or extra full legs) for the circular dimensions of your legs. Don't forget the shoe size too, for the foot portion to be the proper length! Whew! That's just the shopping part! Since the stockings don't stretch yet, you also had to be worn and handled gently and carefully so as not to pull a run in them, or, in British terms, "ladder them!" That was usually the kiss of death for all but the heavier "Service Weight" variety, which were usually made of rather tough material. Those could actually be mended or "darned" like a sock could be repaired. Of course it wasn't an invisible repair, even for the most talented seamstress, but it did extend the life of the stocking for "Service Weight" wear occassions.
    Nurses had special stocking needs, for certain reasons. Their stockings, always in white, and in certain denier or weight, of certain weaves of certain kinds of fabrics, (and not the see-thru variety!) were required for uniform wear. Some nursing schools required that beginning students, (or even students through the whole program) to wear black shoes and stockings with their uniforms, until either they pass the preliminary or probationary courses and become "Full fledged" student nurses, at which point they could change to white shoes and stockings. But, the other courses which required students to wear black until graduation, left the white shoes and stockings to appear with the rest of their new white graduate uniforms at the very ceremony which made them graduates.
    In any case, they REALLY missed the boat on the girdle and stockings! Especially considering that girdles came in several styles, the two biggest divisions being the "panty girdle" type with legs to step into, AND the tubular kind, which you also had to be very careful putting on, so that everything aligned properly, since there were no legs to step into to guide you! It was just like wearing a giant sized rubber band, with snaps, and/or hooks and eyes, or straps, eyelets with very tough strings in them to pull and tie. Imagine the load of work ahead of you each time you go to the "john!" 🤔 And they would have found that the problem of all the little "twiddly bits" would not have shown through their clothing, had they gone on to finish dressing like proper 1950's housewives did, and put on a slip, which was worn underneath their DRESSES! 👗 Plus, the proper shoes - with at least a 1-1/2" or 2" heel. 👠? No, not stilettos! But a nice thicker heeled pump, which, in the proper size, width and style, were exceedingly comfortable. 😉

      as a mulsim she is allowed to show whatebver she wants. if shes showing her face and the shape of her body she is already in defiance of several rules of several people. some muslim women dont even wear a hijab. obviously every person makes their own rules since every rule of the quran can never ever be kept by any one person at a time. also if shes going to be in these kinds of videos she should have to do all the chalenges or dont participate in the dan video. its as if she would have been in a hair video and been like: im not going to do this cause my hair is already made - shows hijab. it doesnt do for an interesting video if she wont show her hair cause shes musim or she wont kiss a random person cause shes muslim. be a producer if you cant participate

    Not all etiquettes but enough to have manners to say please and thank you and being able to wear white for an entire day without messing up..

      I personally think ladylike should disappear. It can cause self consciousness and never knowing if your doing it right. At least thats what it does to me plus its unfair that women should hold onto those things when men never stick to the gym stereotypes and that they need to be built and muscular at all times

  • @Museofmemory

    You don't put your elbows on the table because you'll get food on em and/or flip plates onto the floor. Common sense, really. As for eating oranges, when questioned how one was to eat an orange, my grandmother always said "in the kitchen", lol. And yes, corn skewers have been used since... since corn, basically. Rules for sitting down are basically so you don't end up accidentally flashing your undies to the room or tripping over your heels/skirts. Bottom line, etiquette rules begin as good ideas for not doing stupid things in public, then get passed down generationally without the benefit of context, until you're just doing them so as not to break the rules, long after the original reason has evaporated.

    The sitting thing helps with posture. Ever notice how old men have hunched backs but old women, while small, for the most part have straight backs? Posture! The sitring up straight does so much good in old age and works super well in offices. It reduces back pain in the long term

      the music, the movies yknow in terms of its pop culture, its fashion etc and the social justice movement began back then, look at people like marlon brando and marilyn monroe who really led the way in that because they understood their white privilege, the 50s without its sexism and racism was just like todays society except for its difference in communication, because of having no social media dating and going out with friends was more frequent because it was really the only way other than phone calls if you could afford it

    My family is almost an era behind. My mom learned art and instruments, and i grew up with learning the 50S type of manners (I'm 33) my moms was the first born in America so yea lol. Until 3yrs ago I'd have a nice dress on, heels an be coifed to serve dinner at informal settings (think of an episode of "i love Lucy" before little Ricky was born) but in this I think the blush looked so pretty on RAFA(?)
