For those who don’t know, Gallaudet (4:30) is THE deaf university in America. Like the ONLY university catered specifically towards the Deaf community. It’s insane they thought they could get away with faking that

I took a couple classes there and like 98% of the undergrads are Deaf, and something like 70% of graduate students there are Deaf. They like… straight up won’t admit you if you aren’t Deaf or hard of hearing. Even Deaf students who grew up in English speaking schools are encouraged (almost required) to learn ASL, because even all the teachers are Deaf. You’d need an interpreter to be hearing there for sure

Taking a Deaf Community class in college (basically learning about Deaf culture and history) and knowing that it's common to ask where you learned ASL, if you went to Gallaudet, who your professor was, etc. the fact that he got away with making up a GALLAUDET PROFESSOR for a while is insane to me

People faking disability online like this really sucks for those of us who not only are really disabled, but also have traumas and major anxieties about being doubted to the point we start to believe it and minimize our own issues. Like, it fuels the cultural doubting of disabled people that's so prevalent that we'll literally doubt ourselves.

    • @yzma9959

I’m a little torn on this, because that some…body? -thing? made a positive impact and they didn’t fake a disability, they faked the existence of a disabled person. Obviously you shouldn’t judge if someone has a disability, but on internet you gotta judge if someone you talk to is real or a bot all the time.
Nevertheless it’s still kinda insane that they did something like this and sad that they couldn’t make a positive impact as themselves instead of creating a fake person.

I wonder that too, and they’re making those of us who go through real struggles looks so bad. I was kind of sad within the first like 10 minutes when D’Angelo was like yeah, that doctors visit thing sounds fake… Unfortunately sounded completely believable to me because I am black/Latina and blind, and I’ve literally had a doctor. Ask me if my ears work properly, and if I could hear their instructions, say that there was no way I was sexually active, and I knew that because of my disability, and questioned how I was biracial when I so specifically look like insert thing that I have not at all. People really think if you’re disabled, they can infantilize the F out of you or talk slower or do whatever and they’ll genuinely think they’re doing it for a good reason or to help and all it does is condescend and crush you and sometimes become low-key racist or offensive in some larger political way.

I read a thriller novel about a woman who conned her way into a career as an anesthesiologist, with no med degree or undergrad degree, on pure self-education and high intelligence (though she was also crazy and problematic and made errors, ofc, she was the villain of the novel after all). I've been in healthcare in some way since literally my childhood, worked in human and animal med jobs, everyone knows I'm the med nerd friend, I think I'd do great in med school if I just had the hoop-jumping and busywork tolerance to handle undergrad without polarizing my grades into half As half Fs lol, and I'm WAY more qualified (i.e. still not qualified by any stretch, but still, more so) than the character in the novel. Part of me was like, oof, I kinda resent having contextual awareness and morals, imagine what my life could be like if I just let myself go off selfishly 😂 But also, the point of this ramble is that, in a world where some people get by with zero real competency behind their unearned confidence ... people like you and me can give ourselves, indeed OWE ourselves, permission to be genuinely confident in and proud of the abilities we DO have :)

I think the two biggest concerns/questions for me are:
    1. Why did he feel the need to lie about it? As a disabled HH person with PTSD, I would be 100% fine with a white abled dude just trying to help out. He did NOT need to present himself as a series of fake Deaf women of color.
    2. No one questioned that this side dated three Deaf queer disabled women of color in a row? I think it's great for people to date within those demographics. I personally am HH, disabled, and queer (white though). But if someone approached me to date and told me all the of their previous girlfriend were Deaf, disabled, and queer, it would come across as a little fetishizing. It would have been cool to have an abled person creating these tools and databases because it shouldn’t be only on disabled people to create them. He still could have been very appreciated in the community. It just seems like a shame.

As someone in the games industry, with a passion in Accessibility, this really shook our community. It’s frustrating that a “prominent voice” played pretend and took away opportunities for incredible voices in our community. It’s going to make it so much harder for people to take Accessibility seriously.

It’s so upsetting when this kind of thing happens. People are always accusing disabled people of faking it for attention and/or profit and those accusations, almost ALWAYS false, have contributed so much to the widespread ableism disabled people face. So when the rare super visible disabled advocate turns out to be faking, it sets things back so much for everyone else. Infuriating.

Honestly, if you've lived through the MsScribe era there's no amount of sockpuppetry that will shock you anymore. I'm more surprised at how easy it was to unravel these personas, at least MsScribe played some 3D chess. The fact that her shenanigans were ultimately not terribly harmful in the grand scheme of things, unlike this dude's, helps too, though.

5:19 unfortunately not far fetched. syrians and lebanese people always get mistaken for “caucasian” (that term is so wrong and outdated i hate it) but they are arab, and many turkish and iranian people also get mistaken for caucasian: my issue here is that turks.. are not arab, and are often self identify as white. in the US, middle eastern people are correctly censused as “white”, there was a proposition to add “MENA” (middle eastern north african) in 2020 but the good old orange cheeto got rid of it. regardless, people east of iraq are not considered arab, and turks are not EVER considered arab… instant red flag if she’s turkish

I'm a recovering pathological liar. Usually it stems from a profound lack of emotional needs being met. In this case I suspect his emotional goal was "I'm a straight White man who actually _does_ understand the experience of minorities." The outcome of the disorder tends to be very selfish and creates a lot of collateral victims. Glad he got exposed so his damage is contained.
