Another good project! I was even more impressed when I noticed the limited selection of tools you're working with. I think the constructive feedback in some of the other comments is good, and will add a couple of thoughts. If possible, invest in a bench vise, a bench grinder with wire and polishing wheels, and finally a drill press. Those three things will decrease the difficulty and time factor for this kind of work significantly, without breaking the bank. Specific to this project, for your bolts and brackets, hot blueing might serve better than paint. I hope my thoughts are helpful, and I look forward to watching the next project

You are very correct in saying that they would/will speed up the work! A drill press is a top priority for me now, as it'll definitely come in handy, but I am a bit limited for space unfortunately, so it may be a little while before I get one. Hot bluing is another thing that I'd like to start doing in the near future as well. I've used cold bluing in a few of my most recent projects, but it's just not as good as heat bluing. not bad. few mistakes but thats fine. when it comes knocking out pins or shafts its better to use a wooden or copper mallet, it will stop the end from peaning over. the other thing is that its better to avoid using vise grips where possible. also as a rule of thumb, its best not to paint the insides of things like this. the metal should be protected anyway by the grease and it avoids the paid having a reaction with what ever you lube it with and clagging up the gears and cogs. also a pro tip ive picked up over the years. is you have a spare pare of vice grips laying about. gent them nice and clean and put some hot glue on the jaws. it out of gives you a good grip and avoids the risk of the teeth taring up the metal part your working on. all in all tho, not a bad job a solid

I'd say really the only way to repair it would be welding it and sanding down the excess metal, and how long that repair lasts would depend on how good the weld is. Otherwise you'd have to replace the whole gear which, aside from machining a new one, would be likely near impossible to find. Good luck on the repair, and thanks a lot for watching!

Welcome! I hope I'm understanding your question correctly. This hand cranked grinder would be used to sharpen tools. The large gear you see under the removable cover is connected to the handle, and also mates with a grooved section on the shaft that the grinding stone is connected to. This allows the stone to turn when the handle is turned. Thanks for watching :)
Rusty Grinder, I used to drink with the guy! He was notorious for abusing his nuts. I have lost count of the times that I told him to go see a doctor but he claimed that it no more than an unfortunate habit .
It's been a while, but I think I got it on eBay. I remember this size grinding wheel being very difficult to find since it's way smaller that what would go on a proper bench grinder haha

I have a very similar grinder that could be the same model. One of the teeth is broken off the large gear. Do you know of anyway to repair that?
