While it lasted back in the days, this was my favorite video gaming show. I use to look forward to each episode and dream of being on one of those shows. But alas, I had rolls of quarters and my local arcade to enjoy my favorite games week after week. Those times are irreplaceable.
The guy that hosted this before was fired for being uninformed/uninterested,so when they hired Geoff Edwards,he started playing arcade games,to become familiar with them, and became a game fan even up till he passed away!!!!
In one episode, I remember he played and beat Sinistar, a notoriously tough game from 1983. In one of the last interviews he did before he died, he said he trash talked kids online while playing games, so sounds like he definitely continued with the hobby haha.
@@tomxconn And there's an odd connection. When the pilot was filmed, Alex Trebek was host. But when Trebek was assigned for pilots that would lead to the show that made his career to the end, Richards got the gig. And later, Richards hosted practice games for players arriving for Jeopardy! to get them familiar with Hollywood Center Studios. (The practice game host was in all likelihood the official backup.)
This game show and The National Video Game and Coin-Out Museum were what inspired me to create a little miniature game room with lots of arcade games and stuff.
Geoff was such a great host. Miss those days. I think they need to bring this show back and play arcade games from every era - NO console games, arcade only.
@@starcadetvvI thought I read that there was an attempt to bring this back but the plans fell through. Would be cool to see this, using both the classics like the ones featured in these old shows and some of the new ones.
Starcade needs to focus on both console and arcade games. The rules need to change with the times. The console games have equaled or matched the arcade games.
The kids didn't understand, but it was a reference to the Klunks on Treasure Hunt (which Edwards had hosted). In reality, the losers probably earned nice consolation prizes from the sponsors. No Klunks. Their parents probably understand the "no Klunks" reference since it was Geoff's best known show.
Geoff Edwards giving the losing contestant quarters to practice... priceless. You can hear the winning contestant giggle when he does this. Also, I'd be pissed if the game offered to me was Munch Mobile. That was a terrible game. Give me BurgerTime, Frogger, Galaga or Donkey Kong please.
Munch Mobile got re-released in 2018, via the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection. Here's an interesting fact: This was the first game created by the legendary programmer behind the Ikari Warriors arcade trilogy.
Don't get it twisted because getting free change was actually a good bonus back then. I was always digging in the couch, scraping the sidewalks, and jumping pay phones just to get coins to play. 😎 You kids wouldn't know about that one.
If they ever bring this show back, they should include pinball games and those racing games where you sit down and have a steering wheel in front of you. Some good examples of that game include 18 Wheeler and Hydro Thunder (my favorite).
check out starcade.tv and watch Episode #94 -- it was a show featuring only Pole Position II. TX-1 was the game you played to win the Grand Prize - TX-1 was a sit-down, 3-screen driving game - it was in prototype supplied to Starcade by Atari.
Problem with selecting Galaxian is that the scoring is always rather low, like Space Invaders was. There was no way Jared would come close to passing Mike.
That was just for show and likely producers would tell players what Geoff would after the match ended. In reality, he returned the tokens to the staff (for legal reasons, they don't use real money on television - for example, on Price, the perfect bid bonus is fake "television only" money handed to the player, and must be returned to the staff after the pricing game). He received good prizes for his appearance, although not as nice as the winner. For parents, the fact Geoff had hosted Treasure Hunt and Jackpot was the bigger meet-and-greet.
@@WhiteHatBobbyAbsolutely for sure. I know he got other prizes and such at the time. I was just mearly saying that as a joke. I just found it hilarious that he got that "Hey buddy here's some coins loser... go practice more" moment on tv. Tying to keep that smile on his face is priceless.
@@Onijsan It's just parodying the Klunks on Treasure Hunt (a women-only game show that Geoff hosted), or a riddle from Jackpot. Those were silly callbacks to his career. Later on, he guest hosted Let's Make a Deal 1984 when Monty Hall was sick.
I know this was posted four years ago, but wow, what a nostalgia trip here! I do remember watching this show from time to time whenever I could. At the time, we lived so far out in the boonies of NW PA that could we could not get TBS, thus could only watch it if I was at a friends house that did have it. At the time this particular episode was aired, I would've been the same age as the older contestant. I do have a couple of arcade cabinets in my basement gameroom - "Choplifter" and "1943 - Battle over Midway". Also pretty cool there is a "retrocade" just down the road from my place, so get to play these classics in an actual arcade setting again.
Is Starcade or was Starcade available on any form of physical media? I’d love to have a legitimate series box set, even if it was just Made On Demand (MOD).
No, not a new show -- Starcade aired in syndication 1982-1984 and in reruns on G4 network 2002-2004. Glad you like it! Millions of Starcaders agree with you
@@starcadetvv OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH, the childhood memories. Ever the episode was over, I would race to my local arcade and talk with the owner to see if he could at least try to get a representative to appear. The show was aired on TBS which is in Atlanta, and I stay about 20 minutes from the station.
looking for another videogame-gameshow can only remember that I could watch it sometimes on TV here in germany when visiting my grandparents but not sure it the show itself was german / german dub or not - should have been between 1990 and 2000 the show was about several children competing to determine who can challenge and an adult-"boss" dressed up in some videogame/villain/smth-cosplay who appeared mostly rather agressive iirc (at least from a childs pov decades ago) and rather overpowered compared to the kids... mfg Olli

Yeah Mark Richards wasn’t a bad host, but would’ve been better hosting maybe something adult oriented or more trivia related

Greatest kids show EVER!
It wasn't just a kids show. A lot of adults were on this show as well.
I like the old games with simple graphics better than games made in 2021.
I was disappointed because youtube removed all the episodes of starcade from a another youtuber that had a playlist

I am utterly depressed that the winning game was not Midway's "Journey" game. This show needed some more Steve Perry.

Journey a space shooting game? Never heard of that until I saw this video, the the only Journey I know of is the one based on the rock group Journey.
There were actually two different games with the Journey title.

Galaxian was overshadered the the sequil Galaga
That's because it was more challenging. You got your quarter's/token's worth on Galaga.
Galaga was a far superior game to Galaxian.
When they play star trek they will live long and prosper
Last week I had a nightmare that I won a Munch Mobile.
