      Very succinct point. Sums up the whole issue. And the worst part of it is, is they'd rather cut the young girls down rather than promote them, which in turn would make them more popular. DT has gotten shit for what she said, and it hasn't made new fans want to watch her, it has done the opposite. I didn't know her before, but I'm already ready for her and her ilk to retire so the next generation can start start playing basketball without all of this negativity surrounding them.

    • @Tha2ruth
      @Tha2ruth 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No it wasn’t because no one never brought up the point that these ladies are better basketball players yet Reese and Clark are being marketed like they are better players when the numbers and what’s going on during games show they aren’t close to being the best players that’s a problem your asking better talent to not play to their potential to let the popular players shine… any real competitive player is t going to do that… so cc will and is making all the money but she played in the wnba where AJa is queen and is the best player on the planet yet she suppose to pretend cc is better than her?

    • @bernet10j
      @bernet10j 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @Tha2ruth We know that CC and AR are not the best women basketball players in the WNBA. Probably not in the top 15 right now. But, they are the most popular. The best and the most popular is to different things. Aja probably been in the league how long. What 5 to 7 years? She is no doubt a great player. But, she hasn't been seen and really a lot of people don't know about her. They need to prop these young girls up because they have the big fanbase. So, you get more eyes on the league. Then, people that have never seen Aja and the rest of the ladies play. They get to see how great these ladies are. That's all their saying.

      @@bernet10j right we all no that but the problem is the narrative is that Clark is the best and the greatest ever and it’s not true and that everyone is jealous of her because she is better than them but it’s not true she can be the most popular that’s cool but don’t lie and disrespect the other player who are obviously better than her and Say she is the best not she is the most popular not close to being the best. You can’t tell me someone better than me and expect me to like when I prover day in and out I’m better that’s reality also.

    • @bernet10j
      @bernet10j 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Tha2ruth I never said she was the best player in the league. I said she is the most popular by far. I see nothing wrong with that. I get what some of the women are feeling about CC. But that's not her doing. The people, the fans make that choice who's the most popular. Not the media. The media will ride that wave. Anybody or anything that's famous. It's driven by the people. No matter how much I want my shoes to sell. I think I deserve them to sell. I put in the work for them to sell. All that doesn't matter. It all boils down to what do the people like. I could have the best shoes on the market. But. if people don't want them. That's what it is. I'm saying that to say this. You get and earn what you deserve. It is jealous among the women in the league. You just pretty much said it yourself. It is human nature. You just said, "You're going to tell me someone is better than me, and I know that their not. That's a form of jealousy or envy like it or not. I know the word is not what people like. But, it's just the human in us.

Then he made them pay with the $33 mill/year (96/97 & 97/98) the highest all-time single season salary at the time and wasn’t surpassed for the next 20 years until Steph. Think of that, with how much the NBA and salaries have exploded, it was 20 years until someone made more than MJ did (now it’s broken every season)

  • @JE-IC
    @JE-IC 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Your commentary is fantastic! I agree with EVERYTHING you said! I'd like to offer several thoughts inspired by your discussion. First, your comment that the NEW fans the rookie class bring with them are girls, ages 8-18. And of course, they plead with their parents to buy them jerseys, take them to games, and buy a WNBA pass. You see families sitting together in the stands.
    It's a VERY different demographic from the traditional sports fans (men) that have been watching the WNBA, and it takes a different kind of marketing to keep this new audience.
    The rookies look like celebrities in the eyes of their young fans. Caitlin appears on Saturday Night Live, and greeted Ashton Kutcher with a hug at the LA Sparks game. Angel Reese modeled for Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and went to the Met Gala. Angel dresses up in fashionable outlets to arrive at her games and leave afterward, and now other young WNBA players are following her example. Many of the rookie class wore clothes by prestigious designers to Draft Night. Caitlin was the very first to wear Prada to such an event.
    Caitlin signs autographs after every game and is gracious to her young fans. A recent clip showed her having a bit of fun playing one-on-one with a young boy fan - and then obtaining free tickets to the game for his whole family, right on the hardwood. You can bet that every parent who sees that video clip and hears about the gift of game tickets for the family will look favorably upon their children becoming fans of Caitlin.
    Who do you think will buy Caitlin's Nike sneakers and Wilson basketballs? The biggest audience will be parents with children. And when you look at the fans sitting in the stands, there are a LOT of children in 22 jerseys with either Iowa or Fever logos. An adult man who is a traditional WNBA fan might buy himself one jersey, and maybe one pair of shoes. But Caitlin's fans are buying jerseys and shoes for the whole family, and every year those children will need new shoes.
    The established WNBA players probably care nothing for fashion or social media. But.... those who are still under 35 COULD start taking a page from the books of the rookies and show up in stylish outfits for the games, greet the children, etc. A brand can sell products to the same family for several years as the children grow up.
    And children who grow up enjoying WNBA games may continue to be fans as adults.

    Gilbert is right in his financial analysis. The problem is that Caitlin Clark can't play the way she did in college, unless the women in the WNBA don't even try to defend her. She has MAJOR flaws in her game, specifically her ball handling and her overall skill set.
    In other words, Caitlin Clark is Tim Tebow . . . a widely popular player with a limited skill set in the pros. Tebow had his pro moment, but couldn't sustain it due to his lack of overall QB skills. Let's see if Caitlin can at least live up to 75% of her hype.

      oh man talk about a lazy comparison. Tim Tebow was a bad NFL QB, like bottom tier. There's no way you could make an argument that CC is one of the worst players in the league. She's about 75th percentile in efficiency. She has a higher FG% than Jewell Loyd who is a 5x WNBA all-star, higher efficiency than Kelsey Plum. bad take bro, maybe she never becomes the GOAT but she's not a bad player, even right now. Tim Tebow was bad.

    You briefly touched on a point that deserves more exploration. You commented that people who were fans of players during their college years will follow their favorite players into watching them play in the WNBA. I agree.
    Historically, the ranks of the WNBA have been loaded with players from the same small number of colleges - UConn, South Carolina, etc. And that small number of colleges has a limited number of fans available to follow the players produced by those colleges. There's a saturation point, though, of how many fans from those places will follow their alumni's college careers. The prestigious programs have reached that saturation point.
    This year, the WNBA picked up 3 University of Iowa graduates - Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin, and Megan Gustafson. (Megan is a bit older, and has been playing in Europe.) Iowa fans have rallied around all three of them. Iowa fans are watching not only Fever games on tv, but also Aces, because we love all three of our Hawkeye women. All 3 of them are praised in social media posts about the WNBA games.
    The arenas who host college football bowl games have figured out that Iowa fans love our players, even when our teams are so-so. Iowa football receives bowl invitations simply because the hosting arenas know our fans will show up in large numbers to support our team. Every large or medium-sized city has an "I club".
    And now you're seeing that Hawkeye loyalty extending to the WNBA. I guarantee that a substantial number of the fans who show up at the games to watch Caitlin play all over the country have ties to Iowa - having either grown up here, or gone to college here. A lesser number will go see the Aces, but for sure some Iowa fans will go see Megan and Kate play if the Aces come to their cities.
    I'm willing to place bets that if the LA Sparks had added Monica Czinano to their roster last year instead of waiving her, they would have gotten a boost in attendance from Iowa fans. Admittedly, not the size of crowds that Caitlin draws, but Monica was Caitlin's post player in the 2023 NCAA tournament when Iowa beat South Carolina in the Final Four and went on to face LSU. Iowa fans definitely know who she is and would support her. We were excited when she was drafted, and disappointed when she was waived.
    The WNBA makes its roster choices based on "skill". You emphasized "skill" many times in your discussion, and you're right. I do understand the reasoning - the teams want to build the winning rosters, and winning games is important. But maybe bringing on a few players from lesser known college programs would pay off by attracting fans of those colleges who previously paid no attention to the WNBA due to not having players on rosters.

    The NBA doesn't mind promoting the heck out of its rookies e.g Wembanyama. The WNBA would rather promote the same players that we already weren't watching 😂😂😂😂

    The only way these ladies can compete with Caitlin or Angel stardom is for them to be promoted more from their talent. grass that is watered grow faster same thing with players. Caitlin is known because she's all over sports center she's all over the news it's not her talent she's being super promoted.

    I wish all the ladies well in their professional pursuits. I'm not specfically a fan of any WNBA player. The league still looks like scrimmage matchups and I can't watch an entire game in one setting.
    But to be fair, I turn off regular season NBA games when everybody just throwing up 3s and playing 0 to no defense🤷🏽‍♀️ This isn't my era of bb, hasn't been for 20 years now😢

    Unfortunately I think they’re doing this in order to not piss off the veteran players. I can’t believe how badly they are fumbling this opportunity.
