I've been enjoying your reactions to America! I'm about your age and I remember their songs on the radio all the time. Reminds me of my early childhood in small town Enid, Oklahoma. Seems like an entirely different world thinking back to that time of my life. I got to see America live at our local county fair where I currently live back about 2000. They put on a great show. Thanks for the memories. :)

After a quick memory refresh on Wiki, it's my understanding that America was calling it quits thinking that music trends had passed them by. Russ Ballard was called in to write a winner, resulting in a comeback with "You Can Do Magic". Some years later, they were going to quit again, but a number of then big alternative rock artists contacted the band to express how important their catalog was, resulting in their continuing on.

This beautiful song was written and produced by Russ Ballard, a wonderful British guitarist-singer-composer-producer. He also produced and played on the "It's your move" album by America. Russ Ballard ( once singer for the band Argent) is one of the greatest underrated composers. On this song, Russ Ballard plays all instruments and sings background vocals. Please listen to his wonderful album " At the third stroke" (1979) played with great studio cats ( Jeff Porcaro, Mike Baird, David Paich etc.).

So glad you found America the band not the country they were and are still phenomenal. Saw them a couple of years back and the memories just flooded back to the early 70s when I first fell in love with those harmonies and you said it they are an American version of ELO on a smaller scale. Big fan of both groups. 💥

America, The Eagles, etc. we’re the very heart of music in the 70’s. They were helping to bridge a gap that had developed between Rock&Roll and Country at the time. They helped pave the way for 80’s style country to emerge as the force that it was. So good to see younger people enjoying the music I so love. Keep it coming, brother. ✌️ out

I first heard this, in late 1982 at 12, and it was eye-opening. I didn't even know it was by America!
Listen, Jamel, to their content from the mid-70s. 'You Can Do Magic' was an almost total stylistic overhaul of what they were doing four to eight years prior. The song brought them solidly into the new decade.
For me, it never sounds dated, or old, just fresh every time I play the song or hear it somewhere

only in your heart is amazing because there's some backwards tape looping.
and remember George Martin produced a lot of America's stuff starting with their third album and what's really cool about only in your heart is you can literally hear the beatle kind of influence coming straight through what it plays backwards and all the rest of the stuff goes on.

Just a magician's glove.. that's all; the song is about magical vibes.. America is an American rock band that was formed in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek and Gerry Beckley. The trio met as sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London, where they began performing live. Achieving significant popularity in the 1970s, the trio was famous for its close vocal harmonies and light acoustic folk rock sound. The band released a string of hit albums and singles, many of which found airplay on pop/soft rock stations.
