The Black Phone is a 2021 American coming-of-age supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, who both produced with Jason Blum. It is an adaptation of the 2004 short story of the same name by Joe Hill. The film stars Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, James Ransone, and Ethan Hawke. In the film, an abducted teenager (Thames) uses a mysterious telephone to communicate with the previous victims of his captor (Hawke).
The Forgiven takes place over a weekend in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, and explores the reverberations of a random accident on the lives of both the local Muslims, and Western visitors to a house party in a grand villa.

Thanks for the good review. I just saw it and still sorting out my feelings on it. I liked the unusual setting and storyline, and the acting was superb, but I found my mind wondering a few times, which is not a good sign. The wondering usually occurred when the film kept returning time and time again to the party scene while Ralphe's character (David) was away, spending time with the grief-stricken father. I think they could have cut 10 minutes off of those party scenes and we wouldn't have missed them. I'm a bit unclear on the ending, but assuming it was because David was still feeling guilty about what happened and wanted justice to take place -- even though he was on the losing end of it. Is that how you saw it? I'd give it a 6 or 7 out of 10.

Great review. And agree w everything u said. It's a straightforward story but an unconvential movie at the same time. The Morrocan desert setting was a character in and of itself. It was incredible to look at.

Great review Brando, Ralph Fiennes filmography is big and he’s one of the best actors who haven’t won an Oscar.

I’ve been to that area of Morocco and to the Sahara desert. The setting of the movie was perfect. The Sahara was a powerful backdrop to a story which makes us question our own prejudice. A truly magnificent movie.

    great review as always brando
ralph fiennes is a great actor that has a Huge filmography
there are favorite older roles that are fun for the audience
you have ralph fiennes's John steed in the avengers from 1998 which also has Uma thurman,
but you also have fiennes's role in wallace and gromit the curse of the were rabbit where he voiced victor quartermaine
which oddly enough the character name is similar to that of the adventurer allan quartermain, Just with an added e at the end of it , which makes the two character names sound similar
but fiennes's supporting role in schindlers list opposite Liam neeson and when he was also in QuIz show, both of which are great

I did see this movie but felt very ambivalent about it. I really liked your Review it was well rounded and generous. Yes a few character were very superficial and such a contrast between the rich and poor. I thought the movie was very slow paced but maybe needed that to build suspense. It had a sinster atmosphere and you knew something was going to happen but you didn't know when or how. Jo and David's roles were reversed in the end where Jo became more corrupt and David more accountable. Enjoyable but easily forgotten.

I liked this movie. It is well paced and very well shot. The Moroccan desert, the sand the locales are great. The Forgiven does have an interesting storyline but the track of Jessica Chastain and the other white guys hampers what is otherwise an interesting and emotive thriller. In fact it seems that 2 different narratives are playing and it kind of feels bizarre given the main theme of the movie.
But the second narrative is the heart of the movie and its done well, almost to perfection. Its slow burn and features an outstanding performance from Ralph Fiennes. This was a difficult role. You underplay it, then you fail to contribute to mood and theme of the narrative. You overdo it, you spoil the mood and the theme. Fiennes is almost perfect in his role, as through his character we explore the tragedy and its repercussions. He is very well supported by the non-white actors portraying the locals who play their roles very well. There is one scene which is exceptionally well done. The ending too will surprise or rather shock you.
Overall I give The Forgiven a 7. Its a good attempt but the movie fails to integrate Jessica Chastain or the other white actors into the story. Its fine to show their responses and their vices but they had to be linked to the main plot. Their track seems contrived and just tangent to the narrative. And the dialogues at times is also poorly written, completely on the nose. And Chastain herself struggles to portray her two faced character with conviction. Her transformation is very unconvincing and she struggles to play the neglected wife. Probably the narrative needed to given some more time to Fiennes and Chastain to develop her track completely. Especially as he is faced with the decision to go or not go, and before he finally leaves.
Not for everybody but if you can sit through it, The Forgiven will impress you with its main theme and a great performance from Fiennes. Maybe, just maybe we have one of first nominations for Best Actor. If only The Forgiven had done a better job of presenting the complete narrative and integrating the other white actors into the narrative in a more convincing and relevant way.

@@BrandoCritic I just share what I feel. But I have to say this. No matter how I try I still have difficulties in telling Bryce Dallas and Jessica Chastain from one another. I watched Jurassic Dominion and this very closely. But I have some idea. Chastain has sharper features and Howard is more chubby, like more natural. Acting wise I think Howard is better. Though Chastain won the Oscar first. Interesting to see if they are ever cast together.

let me tell you a spoiler: starting at 1:08 and in the next 20 seconds, the author retold most of the plot.
5:27 aha, the author said that the wife will cheat on her husband. That’s all, from the wimpy plot the only question left is “will the main character survive at the end of the film or not”. the answer in the film genre is drama
Some credits at the beginning look good, but others make me think: “Are you REALLY counting on me not to finish?”

@@BrandoCritic no problem) In 8 minutes you spoke quite comprehensively about the film.
For my taste, the film is empty, there is no second bottom for reflection, the characters are two-dimensional and for whom you don’t worry. not a bad illustration of human prejudices, but nothing more. I wanted to see it from the point of view of the person who liked it (and my english may be bad)

I think the movie could have done well without Jessica Chastain in it. I think the writers just wanted to capture a 'wider' audience exploiting Jessica Chastain's massive sexual appeal. Instead if they focused more on David's character arc of reaching self actualization, would make more sense. The whole affair plot with 'the American' was unnecessary. But I did appreciate the situational contrast between the extravagant lifestyle of the visitors and the poverty of the locals
