  • Elvis Movie Review 2022
Elvis is a 2022 biographical musical drama film directed by Baz Luhrmann, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner. The film follows the life of rock and roll icon, singer, and actor Elvis Presley, told from the perspective of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. It stars Austin Butler in the title role with Tom Hanks as Parker, while Olivia DeJonge, Helen Thomson and Richard Roxburgh co-star.
From his childhood in Tupelo, Mississippi to his rise to stardom starting in Memphis, Tennessee and his conquering of Las Vegas, Nevada, Elvis Presley becomes the first rock 'n roll star and changes the world with his music.

AMAZING. Give the Elvis movie all the awards! Austin Butler as a guy loyal to a fault. Tom Hanks as a manipulator that did do some good. It was stylistic in the beginning with montages & Doja Cat to make it a little modern but once his mother died when Elvis got humbled.. 😭❤️

We did get a bit of “Colonel Tom Parker’s” motivations in the movie. He had his own past demons that he was desperate to avoid coming out.
He came to the US illegally from the Netherlands and was stateless (not a citizen of any country). That’s why he was so bound and determined not to let Elvis tour internationally, because he himself wouldn’t be able to get back into the US, if he could even leave without a passport.
He was in the US military but went AWOL and was arrested. That’s why he was pressuring Elvis to go into the military, because he was worried that if Elvis became known as a “draft-dodger”, then his own military past would come to light.
Also, Colonel Tom had a mountain of gambling debts. That’s one of the reasons he leeched off of Elvis and made sure to get as much money for himself as he could, aside from just straight up greed. Notably that’s why he signed Elvis up for the residency in Vegas. That’s also why he was so determined to manipulate and control Elvis’ every move, because he was afraid of losing his meal ticket.
Another reason why he was so against Elvis touring internationally was because he might have discovered another manager who wouldn’t take as much advantage of him.
Colonel Tom’s motivations are there. They just don’t overstate them.

Watching the trailers, I’ve been worried that this would be another standard music biopic and I’m not a fan of Baz Luhrmann’s style. I do want to give this movie a chance hoping for a good film and the praise for Austin Butler’s performance. I do have a feeling his performance is going to get more people excited to see him in Dune Part Two next year to which I’m excited to see him in my most anticipated movie next year. Great review, Brandon!

Totally agree that I couldn’t buy into Hanks in this movie and that it’s extremely narratively lost. I personally think a more focused approach to Elvis’ relationship with Priscilla, his borderline civil rights work, his ‘68 comeback special, fighting to get out of Vegas residency (or rather the artistic control that allowed him), any of those would have worked better. Plus I left with a massive headache from this movie, so thanks Baz. Great honest and balanced review as always Brandon!!

When I think about it, the frantic uncentered pace of this movie is maybe a reflection of the confused soul that Elvis really was. About who he was, why he was chosen, and what was his true purpose and place in the world. I think the man was full of contradiction and forever a man in search of himself. Who was he in his own mind? I think that changed a lot over the years, through triumph or defeat, and with addiction and sadness.

    • @BrandoCritic
      @BrandoCritic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I think that's more of a coincidence than a solid choice made by the filmmakers

@@BrandoCritic Absolutely. I think so too. But I've been thinking about this movie for a few days. Maybe it fits. Certainly far from a perfect movie. But as an Elvis fan..... I was massively entertained and I could feel the care that was put into it. Script needed cleaning up and characters could have been developed more. But honestly that's all been done to death. They really went all in to bring the artist AND his art back to life in a way no other film has before. They made him bigger than life.... The way he was and the way fans want him remembered. I loved the film, flaws And all..... Kind of the way I still love Elvis and his music.

Austin looked as hot as Elvis did in that leather & he also nailed the If I Can Dream scene. I think Baz did an excellent job but it has to be long to cover the King's life & I think he very much covered that & the music alone makes it also. Yeah, Tom Hanks in a different role but he did it well & old makeup was convincing. Strange to see Tom looking SO old for a change.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, and Best Wishes. "ELVIS" is the type of biopic that tells you more about the director than its alleged subject. It's all flash and spectacle and quick cuts, and "the art of cinema"; designed to make you forget the director doesn't care very much about Elvis and the movie has little substance. Baz''s decision to tell the story exclusively from Parker's POV is its greatest and most glaring flaw. Underneath all that prosthetic make-up, Tom Hanks might as well be Freddy Krueger from "NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET" franchise. He's the boogyman who can't wait to devour Elvis alive and manipulate him and everyone in his life. Elvis is not portrayed as a person, but as a commodity to be consumed and used. This movie is just Elvis as a packaged and sold commodity. Is Austin Butler any good? Yes, in the rare moments when he's allowed to be Elvis and bring some depth; mostly in the latter half of the movie. But this Elvis isn't in the building; in fact, Elvis is barely in the movie. It's the Cliff's Notes version of Elvis. For a far superior biopic with a human perspective on Elvis and far better insights, see the 2006 TV biopic with the same title Starring Irish actor Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.

Biopics of icons, especially relatively recent pop culture, are usually a disaster because the person who plays the icon are never as talented, good looking, charismatic, whatever. I don’t care what tricks the director has up his sleeve, it’s just a letdown if you’ve seen the real thing. Like who would dare play Marilyn Monroe?? If you want to get the real Elvis experience just watch his 1968 television special. I’m not even a big Elvis fan, but I probably would have screamed hysterically like a schoolgirl and thrown my panties on stage if I had been in the audience and I’m a guy! 😂

You don't really see Elvis's end, They go from 68 straight to 73 or so and then him going into a plane and credits. The film was good but the film was all over the place. In my opinion it should have been a mini series. Season 1 would be Elvis 1950 to 1958, Season 2 would be 58 to 68, then last season 3 would be his declining years, 1973 to his eventual death. They focused too much on his career and not much of his actual life outside of the studio his struggles with addiction and trying to get multiple doctors to write scripts, his various relationships, his relationship with his father, so much of his life was missing from the film. Also the cast was god awful, his friends the memphis mafia was almost entirely gone. Good movie but so much of Elvis life wasn't included. Also his spiritual path with Larry Gellar his hair stylist who knew the real elvis that people didn't get to see behind closed doors.

Because if there is, I don't watch it. I'm tired of musical biopics reusing the same plot elements. Sometimes, it seems that all famous musician lived the same life, they keep making the same film over and over again from the same perspective. Even Marvel is better.

Womanizing, prescription drug use, and divorce. The scenes are brief. The whole divorce is covered in about 5 minutes. If you blinked, you’ll miss the reference to womanizing. None of the aforementioned are the main focus of the film. They are just used to acknowledge the facts most people already know. The movie is about Elvis’s relationship with his manager and the effects on his career. This is definitely not a typical biopic. The energy in this movie makes Bohemian Rhapsody look like snooze fest.
