To think that in the comic universe, this was the exact prison that Lee Everett of the Telltale series was on his way towards before the police car he was in crashed at the start of the Apocalypse. Makes one wonder how he'd react towards Rick's group if he survives the initial outbreak in the prison. But then again Clem would've likely starved to death since he wasn't in the neighborhood to find her by chance.
lee wasn’t a bad guy so wouldn’t have tried anything so we can assume he’d join just like axel and could even become an important member of the group (plus he’d be glad to see other people)

i like to think lee would’ve started off as just the asset for him being incredibly smart but would gradually become more hardened and badass (similar to gabriel and eugene)
Fun Fact: The prisoner, Thomas Richards, was mentioned by the police officer to Lee in Telltale's TWD Season One, along with his awful crime. I ain't surprised as TWD comics and Telltale's TWD take place within the same universe. 😁

having read the comics, it always bugs me when people say that rick became just as bad as the governor. what he did in the show was bad (killing innocents, assaulting Maggie), the governor in the comics was DISTURBING

As a kid I never used to get the age restrictions in media, I always thought they were way too strict. For the most part I still think that, but I remember reading the Governor arc at the age of 14 and suddenly getting it (I was close with the prison arc), that shit truly scared me as nothing else in media had before. TWD has the most perfectly dark and despicable world building and I will always love it for that.
Totally. I watched the first 4 and a bit seasons before i gave up and then read the comics. Quite quickly into the books i was mad at the show for how they did Andrea lol. The comics were great and brutal
The thing about the prison in the comics is that it's a really dark storyline, but at the same time the prison feels comfy and like home at points. There's a lot more survivors there and it feels like a small community there, while in the show the group is really small and people are constantly dying while Woodbury is thriving and has Andrea and even takes rejected Tyreese (Which is one of the shows moments that pisses me off the most) in a lot of ways the prison arc in the show makes Rick's group look pathetic.

Season 3 was great imo. The Season where the TV Show shined. Andrea was handled very very poorly, but the governor was a much better villian, he had motivations and was just more fleshed out. The comic one was a badass no doubt but he was just a crazy psycho and thats that, but yeah this is one of my favorite arcs in the TV show. I love this walking dead retro perspective series! Keep up the great work.
I disagree about the governor. He was way watered down, mostly because of what they could and couldn’t do on the show because of the show’s age rating and time of airing. Had it of been aired on HBO like GOT it would have been far more like the comics. That’s a compromise. He was compromised. When comic book governor was introduced he went down in history as being one of the highest ranked villains of all time, across all media, up there with Darth Vader from the OG Starwars trilogy, by Forbes amongst other publications. In the TV show 2 separate characters make up the governor. I say to this to say that some of the governor’s story lines, actions, personality and characteristics are given to Merle in the show. In the show Merle has to do a lot of the dirty work making the governor just appear as charming and less sinister where as part of what made the governor so frightening in the comics was that he was a fucking psychopath and unpredictable. He was the first real “something to fear” until the Saviours were later introduced. He’s more of a sociopath in the show whilst Merle takes the psychopath role and he is the one that is most feared. He’s seen as the lose canon. The audience worry more for the characters left with him than they do characters left with the governor. Tv show governor didn’t even go through with the rape of Maggie, he just wanted her to know he could, there was no lust. Morissey’s governor was like a lion that had just eaten. He had just had just slept with Andrea moments before. where as Merle would of had to of been fought off in that situation. He’s the bigger threat in that universe. The Latino prison inmate is more like the Governor than the governor we saw on the show and would of been a better casting choice in my opinion.
I agree with your take on The Governor. It's much more interesting to see an already unstable character completely losing his mind after his zombie daughter dies. It makes his actions after that a bit more understandable. The show did a great job of showcasing that
The novels already went into the governor though, so I don’t understand this. The comics was about him at the moment but the Novels do excellent work at fleshing out Brian, his niece and how he basically went batshit insane.
The prison arc is definitely one of my favorites. I can't WAIT to get to the Governor content! As someone who hasn't read the comics outright but have heard a lot, I *know* it gets dark. Heheh. :)
Season 3’s weird pacing and change of certain parts is one of its biggest faults to me, ESPECIALLY the second half of the season which just absolutely assasinated Andrea’s character. Plus the mediocre finale is just the cherry on top for why its in my bottom 5 seasons. I don’t know if it’s an unpopular opinion or not, but I do actully prefer the TV Governor to the Comic version. The comic version was more brutal and evil, but in my opinion it’s to a level that’s almost unrealistic in how a human would act lol. I feel like Morissey’s portrayal made him more of a complex character that I loved to hate.
My issue with the comic version of the Governor is that he felt over the top and shock value-y. There are definitely effed up people who would and currently *do* do horrific things to others, but imo it never felt like it was written in a way that was convincing and realistic.
I prefer comic over the show, mostly because I read the novels and what he went through to turn into that piece of shit of a person that fitted with his character.
Can’t wait to sit down and watch this with a nice glass of ginger-ale. Maybe I’ll even make myself a drink with some ginger-beer. Golly gee if only there was also some Christmas food that would go great with these.
This is the first time I've seen the comics redone in colour and its so different feeling. I loved how the original black and white sorta hid the more gruesome parts cause you couldn't tell the difference between blood and anything else, but I would love to reread the books recoloured and really brought to life
i think they should illustrate all the drawings again to make them look like the tv characters. would be better, but obviously not change the comic story itself.

andrew lincoln is a phenomenal actor. i think both the show and the comics do their jobs well, but i personally just love the way the actors bring the characters to life. the emotion is incredible

After giving up on the show after the Governor arc, I'm enjoying all the stuff I missed leading up to it. When you compare the mediums but let them exist in their own worlds, you can appreciate both. Also, great to watch these vids with a bit of gingerbread tea.
I haven't really heard much of the soundtrack of TWD, but when I came across a mod that put 'last pale light in the west' as the menu theme, I knew I had to go back and listen to the whole soundtrack.

Honestly, I'm way more excited for the rest of this retrospective than to the ending of the show. Much more entertaing than anything the did for years.
I remember getting so Hyped for S3 It was so breakneck and so unpredictable Lori is redeemed but just as she is she dies in a ruthless unforgettable moment. Rick's been my most favourite character and 3 cemented that He's amazing in 1 & 2 but 3 is where he truly owned the show. In some of the later seasons the weel wait was sometimes unbearable But I barely noticed when we went to the next episode until the mid season finale. I Love S3, there are pros and cons to the whole Cdc we're all infected thing but I'm just as much into the comics differences and similarities with the Prison Arc. It's only in hindsight and your channel that puts into perspective how insane and desperste 3 was. In comparison to how long i've stuck with the show this was just another day in the office. 🤘💀
@@Koroto Honestly when I watched the show, I entirely forgot about the Alan amputation. Alan was really forgettable like that. Since Dale had died at the Farm, I just assumed the Herschel amputation was simply a flow on of Herschel becomng the moral centre of the group like Dale was during this time. I interpreted Rick's lack of hesitation in amputating Herschel's leg not only as him trying to save one of his own, but predominantly as an act of his subconscious' desperation to save the man who could salvage Rick's Humanity and Morality when he inevitably goes too far. Rick would have been at least subconsciously aware that he was starting to lose it. In the comics he relied on Dale to be the voice of reason, the one person who could keep the group from succumbing to the horrors of the apocalypse and losing their humanity forever. Herschel inherited that role in the Show when Dale died, to me that ment he inherited many of Dales plot beats like surviving the bite/amputation and pulling Rick & others back from the brink of becoming monsters. In the show, Rick became the Ricktator the one night he had no one who could, or would, save him from himself. A great detail about Dale is his Flag in his RV is hung inverted and it becomes especially noticeable, both in the comic and show, during times where Dale is appealing to the groups morality, humanity and/or unity. Besides missing Dale being Dale, I miss the Andrea that was the scarred sniper who wore that silly old fishing hat. Carol and Sasha more or less inherited the sniper aspect of the comic Andrea.
Idk if you adressed it here but the helicopter that crashes was the same helicopter in season 1 and 2. It makes A LOT of sense and im almost sure it was confirmed at some point
I also remember after the premiere they did a upcoming trailer and was showing a graveyard assuming hershal didn't make it,definitely didn't expect what happened in episode 4 gingerbread
This covering the first half of season 3 I gotta say it's some of my favourite stuff in the show. A few things missing is Rick hearing the phone after Lori's death, that was ethereal and mysterious but also gives Rick closure to develop into a more hardened leader through loss.

The prison arc in the comics is so dark man, I remember reading the prison arc around the same time it was coming out in the show when I was like 13 and years and years later Rick beating Thomas to death like that has still really stuck with me
Because I hate censorship, I'm here to fill in anyone concerned with Hershal's daughters. A con who claimed to be locked up for tax evasion turns out to be a child predator. He beheads the girls and the severed heads are on the ground biting at the air. It was absolutely bone-chilling and one reason I'll always respect the graphic novels more than the show. The show changed alot by pulling punches. Which makes no sense considering they shot a child in the face in their pilot episode and fully showing things like Noah being literally ripped apart. Censorship kills artistic integrity.
Gimple got allot of shit over the years but one thing I always liked was how he actually adapted the comic so that every major moment from the comic happened in some way minus Judiths fate and Maggies suicide attempt.. From season 3 to 8 it MOSTLY felt like watching the comic come to life
Gimple actually did a good job imo. I absolutely loved S04E08 and S05E01 and they are still two of my favorite episodes to this day. Season 6 and its cliffhanger is where things went south.
@@Rifi77 In my opinion, the only real highlights after the season six cliffhanger is the introduction of Negan and his subsequent arc, season 8's final episode, the Rick episodes of season 9, the Gabriel and Aaron season 10 Ep and Here's Negan. Basically, after Season 7 Episode 1, if it doesn't have to do with Rick or Negan, it's almost always very formulaic and bad. No shocker that viewers left the show en masse after the quality went down in season 7.

Probably not a significant criticism, but I have to say that I really appreciate your use of the word "bonked" when explaining the confrontation between Tyreese and Rick.
Loved the opening scene of the season, but I'm pretty sure that nor every member would be cut out to become part of a SWAT team. Not to mention that Zombies start to become less a threat because it became far to easy to kill them.
The panel with Rick beating Thomas into the ground and focuses on his hand being bloody and busted up was adapted in the show when Rick and Tyreese fight and Rick beat him up bad and started to hold his hand in disbelief

Seeing a stoic man like Rick break down over his wife is so heartbreaking, some of the best acting I've ever seen on television, Andrew Lincoln doesn't get near enough credit
I should have got on the band wagon back in 2012 when the show just started getting big. I started November 2015 by Binge watching the first 5 seasons on Netflix and realised I have committed and started watching live for the first episode negans name was mentioned, season 6 midseason premiere
You got one thing incorrect!!!! If you pay attention to T Dogs death, he was bit in the neck, similar to that of Carols death in the comic books. Remember Hershel watched Carol kill herself by way of letting the chained Walker chew on her neck. T Dog took Carols death. While he was simultaneously holding Tyrese slot for being the only black man in the group.
season 3 was the first season i watched live, it still remains my favorite season. I really appreciate quick pacing when it's done well, and i think it was done great in S3. Great video! (:
I’ve been a huge fan of twd since season 2 was airing, and at the time I really enjoyed the comics as well. I’ve always wanted to see someone do comparisons like these and jeez!! You have far exceeded the expectations and I’m glad someone is finally doing it. Definitely deserves far more views. there was a scene faithful to the comics where the prisoners admit to shitting in a room so rick doesn't go in there but in the show they just tell him not to open it too late and he gets hit with the smell of shit.
Gingerbread I have been sticking around for them but wasn't paying attention too much at the end credits... Here mostly as someone who's read the first compendium and watched at least as far Judith being around a tween when I stopped watching the show (figuring that these analysis videos would motivate me to come back and watch the series start to finish).
season 3 was solid for its time yea they mishandled a couple characters but with a lawsuit going on I think they pulled off a decent season,cool you bring up the trailers to before it was predictable these joints use to get me hyped not knowing who was getting axed next
you know a pattern i noticed was that they only ever had 1 black person be a permenant member of the group. if another PoC was introduced, either they would die or the the current PoC woud die and the new one would replace them.

The comic version was more brutal and evil, but in my opinion it’s to a level that’s almost unrealistic in how a human would act lol. I feel like Morissey’s portrayal made him more of a complex character that I loved to hate.
I wouldn't put any level of brutality beyond humans, especially the worst of those surviving in an apocalypse.
My issue with the comic version of the Governor is that he felt over the top and shock value-y. There are definitely effed up people who would and currently *do* do horrific things to others, but imo it never felt like it was written in a way that was convincing and realistic.
I prefer comic over the show, mostly because I read the novels and what he went through to turn into that piece of shit of a person that fitted with his character.
fun fact: there is a season 3 deleted scene of rick and coral building a gingerbread house inside the prison cafeteria.

This is the first time I've seen the comics redone in colour and its so different feeling. I loved how the original black and white sorta hid the more gruesome parts cause you couldn't tell the difference between blood and anything else, but I would love to reread the books recoloured and really brought to life
i think they should illustrate all the drawings again to make them look like the tv characters. would be better, but obviously not change the comic story itself.

andrew lincoln is a phenomenal actor. i think both the show and the comics do their jobs well, but i personally just love the way the actors bring the characters to life. the emotion is incredible

After giving up on the show after the Governor arc, I'm enjoying all the stuff I missed leading up to it. When you compare the mediums but let them exist in their own worlds, you can appreciate both. Also, great to watch these vids with a bit of gingerbread tea.

I haven't really heard much of the soundtrack of TWD, but when I came across a mod that put 'last pale light in the west' as the menu theme, I knew I had to go back and listen to the whole soundtrack.

Rick's been my most favourite character and 3 cemented that
He's amazing in 1 & 2 but 3 is where he truly owned the show.
In some of the later seasons the weel wait was sometimes unbearable
But I barely noticed when we went to the next episode until the mid season finale.
I Love S3, there are pros and cons to the whole Cdc we're all infected thing but I'm just as much into the comics differences and similarities with the Prison Arc.
It's only in hindsight and your channel that puts into perspective how insane and desperste 3 was.
In comparison to how long i've stuck with the show this was just another day in the office.

@@Koroto Honestly when I watched the show, I entirely forgot about the Alan amputation. Alan was really forgettable like that.
Since Dale had died at the Farm, I just assumed the Herschel amputation was simply a flow on of Herschel becomng the moral centre of the group like Dale was during this time.
I interpreted Rick's lack of hesitation in amputating Herschel's leg not only as him trying to save one of his own, but predominantly as an act of his subconscious' desperation to save the man who could salvage Rick's Humanity and Morality when he inevitably goes too far.
Rick would have been at least subconsciously aware that he was starting to lose it. In the comics he relied on Dale to be the voice of reason, the one person who could keep the group from succumbing to the horrors of the apocalypse and losing their humanity forever.
Herschel inherited that role in the Show when Dale died, to me that ment he inherited many of Dales plot beats like surviving the bite/amputation and pulling Rick & others back from the brink of becoming monsters.
In the show, Rick became the Ricktator the one night he had no one who could, or would, save him from himself.
A great detail about Dale is his Flag in his RV is hung inverted and it becomes especially noticeable, both in the comic and show, during times where Dale is appealing to the groups morality, humanity and/or unity.
Besides missing Dale being Dale, I miss the Andrea that was the scarred sniper who wore that silly old fishing hat.
Carol and Sasha more or less inherited the sniper aspect of the comic Andrea.

Idk if you adressed it here but the helicopter that crashes was the same helicopter in season 1 and 2. It makes A LOT of sense and im almost sure it was confirmed at some point
I also remember after the premiere they did a upcoming trailer and was showing a graveyard assuming hershal didn't make it,definitely didn't expect what happened in episode 4 gingerbread
This covering the first half of season 3 I gotta say it's some of my favourite stuff in the show. A few things missing is Rick hearing the phone after Lori's death, that was ethereal and mysterious but also gives Rick closure to develop into a more hardened leader through loss.

What I wanna see some day is a more realistic presentation of the “chop off the limb to stop infection” where the amputation must be done within SECONDS of the initial bite/infection.

The prison arc in the comics is so dark man, I remember reading the prison arc around the same time it was coming out in the show when I was like 13 and years and years later Rick beating Thomas to death like that has still really stuck with me
Because I hate censorship, I'm here to fill in anyone concerned with Hershal's daughters. A con who claimed to be locked up for tax evasion turns out to be a child predator. He beheads the girls and the severed heads are on the ground biting at the air.
It was absolutely bone-chilling and one reason I'll always respect the graphic novels more than the show. The show changed alot by pulling punches. Which makes no sense considering they shot a child in the face in their pilot episode and fully showing things like Noah being literally ripped apart. Censorship kills artistic integrity.
Gimple got allot of shit over the years but one thing I always liked was how he actually adapted the comic so that every major moment from the comic happened in some way minus Judiths fate and Maggies suicide attempt.. From season 3 to 8 it MOSTLY felt like watching the comic come to life
Gimple actually did a good job imo. I absolutely loved S04E08 and S05E01 and they are still two of my favorite episodes to this day. Season 6 and its cliffhanger is where things went south.
@@Rifi77 In my opinion, the only real highlights after the season six cliffhanger is the introduction of Negan and his subsequent arc, season 8's final episode, the Rick episodes of season 9, the Gabriel and Aaron season 10 Ep and Here's Negan.
Basically, after Season 7 Episode 1, if it doesn't have to do with Rick or Negan, it's almost always very formulaic and bad. No shocker that viewers left the show en masse after the quality went down in season 7.

Probably not a significant criticism, but I have to say that I really appreciate your use of the word "bonked" when explaining the confrontation between Tyreese and Rick.
Loved the opening scene of the season, but I'm pretty sure that nor every member would be cut out to become part of a SWAT team. Not to mention that Zombies start to become less a threat because it became far to easy to kill them.

The panel with Rick beating Thomas into the ground and focuses on his hand being bloody and busted up was adapted in the show when Rick and Tyreese fight and Rick beat him up bad and started to hold his hand in disbelief

I should have got on the band wagon back in 2012 when the show just started getting big. I started November 2015 by Binge watching the first 5 seasons on Netflix and realised I have committed and started watching live for the first episode negans name was mentioned, season 6 midseason premiere
I hate season 3 because of how much it diverged from the comics. It felt like Mazarra read sparknotes and said "aight".
You got one thing incorrect!!!! If you pay attention to T Dogs death, he was bit in the neck, similar to that of Carols death in the comic books. Remember Hershel watched Carol kill herself by way of letting the chained Walker chew on her neck. T Dog took Carols death. While he was simultaneously holding Tyrese slot for being the only black man in the group.
The comic is A LOT darker and filled with more twisted gory sadistic horror that the show

I’ve been a huge fan of twd since season 2 was airing, and at the time I really enjoyed the comics as well. I’ve always wanted to see someone do comparisons like these and jeez!! You have far exceeded the expectations and I’m glad someone is finally doing it. Definitely deserves far more views. I really do hope you keep the videos coming, just don’t exert yourself, holidays are coming so make sure to take the time to enjoy some gingerbread ;)

there was a scene faithful to the comics where the prisoners admit to shitting in a room so rick doesn't go in there but in the show they just tell him not to open it too late and he gets hit with the smell of shit.

I have been sticking around for them but wasn't paying attention too much at the end credits... Here mostly as someone who's read the first compendium and watched at least as far Judith being around a tween when I stopped watching the show (figuring that these analysis videos would motivate me to come back and watch the series start to finish).
season 3 was solid for its time yea they mishandled a couple characters but with a lawsuit going on I think they pulled off a decent season,cool you bring up the trailers to before it was predictable these joints use to get me hyped not knowing who was getting axed next
