The reason for the piano solo was so Steve Perry could rest his voice. The next song in the set was Open Arms. How Could he sing like that is beyond me. Flabbergasted!!!!
Live, no auto-tune, no added tracks playing which is used all the time now. Just Steve Perry, and the musicians. That was an historical vocal performance!! They could do it for real back then...no mistakes.
@@nancywyatt821RS had him ranked around 85th best voice of all time. That's a joke. They had Beyonce in top 10. 😂😂😂😂 RS is absolutely delusional and wouldn't know talent if it smacked them in the face.
Steve has said that this song was the hardest one too sing!! Been a fan for 50 years now! Like I have said the bands back then had to sing or play an instrument! Not like now today's music makes me sad! But the 70's was the best time of my life..love love 😘 your channel guy's..
@@angelotrinidad6888 I think it's both, because he uses different vocal techniques as the song progresses: he starts with his regular voice, then to more of a grittier rock style, then into a heavy soul style, seamlessly dropping back into his regular voice on the choruses, and then whatever it is at the end (it's hard to tell if it's just the far upper range of his regular voice or falsetto). The piano solo at the end is actually only in the live versions to give Steve a break.
Steve vocals in this song for outstanding as always but I don't think that this is his hardest to cover song. There's a song called Lay it Down that his vocals slide up and down the scale, effortlessly, it's just amazing. There are some channels on here where Voice coaches analyze the song Lay it down and give you kind and overview of the notes he's singing as the scale up and down..... And it's pretty freaking impressive. I hadn't listened to lay it down since I was a kid, my mind was just really blown now that I know a lot more about music
no. his voice sucks now like most older rock stars. he even abandonded the team during his trial by fire days in the late 90's because he lost his voice. just listen to trial by fire album and compare it to older ones.
I watched an interview with Steve Perry talking about how his parents divorce still is hard for him to this day. The lyrics are wonderful and his voice …. Well Jon Bon Jovi didn’t nickname him “The Voice” for nothing. I especially love people’s reactions at the end last few notes when they realize it’s Steves voice! He sounds like and an instrument. In fact they sound like an orchestra with Steve centered around the band. Especially Johnathan on the keyboards and Neil on the guitar
There is a more recent live version of this song where the drummer, Deen Castronovo, sings it flawlessly while absolutely KILLING it on the drums. He's not quite Steve Perry but the dude is ridiculously impressive.
Steve Perry is incredible singer. He is one of the best. If I think about somebody else on the same scale it would be only Freddie Mercury.RIP Freddie.❤
Steve, the voice, unbelievable. You have to watch this performance several times and you will notice new details each time. Look at the band, guitar, bass, drums, piano and the voice, each one perfect and together a great orchestra. The whole "Escape" concert was amazing. Journey with Steve were the greatest. Journey without Steve is no longer the same, but Steve will always be Steve the voice
I'm African American myself but has been on love with Journey and Steve Perry since the 80's!!! His voice is nuts and the brother on the guitar kills it! You will love them!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He literally dismounted that mic, bro! Never seen that in my life. My little girl ears knew what she wss listening to cause his was my one of my fav male voices to practice singing too.
One of my favorites in every way. The piano solo at the end was their way of introducing their new keyboards player to the audience and is not included on the studio version.
You showed an interest in Jon Cain, the pianist. He comes from Chicago, his parents sent him to a Catholic school where he was one of the only survivors of a massive fire. His Father became obsessed with the idea that God had saved him for something special, and had visions of him performing before thousands of people. He was therefore sent to a music conservatory and put under pressure to realize his Father's dreams. The extended solo at the end was to give Perry a chance to catch his breath before the next song. Even though his taste ran more to bubblegum than rock, he was a godsend to the songwriting team of Perry and Schon because neither of those musical geniuses could read or write musical notation.
Listen to something to hide from the infinity album. Steve’s vocal range is simply amazing in that song. He mimics the guitar with his voice towards the end. ❤❤❤
I HIGHLY recommend “Wheel In The Sky”! If you guys are impressed with Perry here, you’d discover in the referenced tune that his vocals are unsurpassed! Journey was popular just prior to my Senior year in high school but was far from a “novelty” band then. Listen carefully to Perry in the referenced tune as he accompanies the outstanding guitar solo of Neal Schon. Perry carries 6 full bars of 2 notes without any stress to his vocals or taking a breath! Schon’s background includes having been with Carlos Santana for two years. He’s outstanding! Johnathan Cain is quite the accomplished pianist. I’m also quite accomplished in composing and performing classical but Cain would be a challenge for me! He’s capable of anything from classical, gospel-as he’s now recording, rock, R&B and soul! Steve Perry has now recorded 4 solo albums with the last 2 recorded in 2018. He’s now 75 and recording. Rumor has it that he may tour again. Regardless, my drug of choice will always be Steve Perry!!!❤
My first Journey album was the one before Steve joined them, titled: "Next." After Steve joined them...they became a whole new band. And this is my favorite song of theirs.
I got to see them 2 times back in the day and seen this Tour and feel so lucky to have got to experience them LIVE. Fell in love with Steve's voice and his "Hair" the first time I saw them live. As you see a Live performance just doesn't get much better than this. Loved yalls reaction.❤
You guys have great reactions. Steve Perry, one of the greatest vocalist ever. Showman extroardineer. Seen them live once. UNBELIEVABLE concert. Thank you. Veteran for all. Much love your way.
This was early in the show because Steve still has on his jacket. If it's according to the album it would have been the 5th song. Always amazes me how Johnathan Cain can play such beautiful music standing up all night.
Check out when the Dawg, Randy Jackson, was Journey’s bass player- live in concert on “ The Girl Can’t Help It”. Randy kills it with his groove!!!!❤❤❤❤
Steve said that he's planning a new solo album and hopes to tour for it also. He hasn't been on a full tour since 1995. So the fans are so happy. And he's 75 years young.
That’s not what the seventh son means They’re referring is the seventh son who is suppose to have powers as in healing Now it lets you understand it a little more Beautiful powerful song it’s one of my favorites. The power and feeling Steve and the band members put behind is unbelievable
This is the best song on the Escape album, in my opinion. Guitarist, Neil Schon, said as much, also. It's perfect songwriting and powerful. Steve's vocals on this live version, especially at the end, is just mind boggling. I saw them live the following year and could not believe what I was hearing. For heavier and edgier songs, try "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) off the Frontiers album or ""La Do Da" off the Infinity album. The Infinity album showcases their heavier side.

They call him the voice for a reason
What’s unreal is that he sang like this for two hours every night on tour. That is brutal- not even opera singers work that hard.
Totally Agree!!!
Steve Perry is the GOAT !!!! No other like Steve Perry!!❤❤❤ Definitely God given talent! No vocal lessons No autotune just raw God Given Talent!!
Journey without Steve Perry is NOT Journey.
And I agree
Even if they started without him, i'm totally agree that journey will not be "Journey" without Steve ❤
Its a trip!
There was Journey before Perry and there's Journey without him.
There will NEVER be a performance like Steve Perry’s voice on this song….EVER 😊
I did hear a version of this song by the drummer and it was pretty close to as great as Steve's version but not quite
Steve Perry did the song in 1 take when they recorded this album!! He is a once in a lifetime vocalist! ❤
One word ........ ' MASTERPIECE '
The reason for the piano solo was so Steve Perry could rest his voice. The next song in the set was Open Arms. How Could he sing like that is beyond me. Flabbergasted!!!!
Steve Perry is one of the GREATEST singers of all time.

It was a gift that they recorded this in their absolute prime 💪
It surprises me to this day that people still don’t know who Steve Perry is.

He needed hip surgery and they wouldn't wait on him to decide to have it. They fired him. He didn't abandon them.
This performance by Steve Perry and Journey has been penned as the greatest live performances in rock and roll history.
The Voice
I thought this live version was better than the studio version!
When Freddie Mercury was asked ,”what was it like to be the best rock singer in the world, he said, Ask Steve Perry”!
Freddie never said this. In fact, there's no evidence that Freddie ever mentioned Perry.
Little teenage me was in the crowd for this one... I was a huge Journey fan back in the day.
i thought that was you at that show.
Steve Perry is absolutely the GOAT!
The Voice I saw him he was unbelievable no words
Steve went into the stratosphere at the end of that song!! And NO AUTOTUNE either.
Steve Perry the voice
Did ya’ll know Randy Jackson from American Idol used to play with them way back.
Steve Perry is the Voice period!!!
If it wasn't for the clapping and whistling you would think it was an album being played.
