Pick any song Live in Houston, same concert, and you will be amazed!! It's literally The perfect concert!! But any live version of Journey is incredible. Yes, piano in every song. The Voice...Steve Perry. This was our music! These were the concerts we paid to see!! And they sold out constantly!!

Having Steve Perry, Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain together in one band was like three lightning strikes hitting one spot one hundred times. Blessed to have seen Journey multiple times. Steve Perry will always be THE "Voice"!
I was at this concert in 1981 in Houston. Little did I know how phenomenal this performance was as a teenager. Now, it's considered one of the greatest live versions of all time. Remember, NO autotune...the performance is 100% instruments and the one in a million voice of Steve Perry. It's been said that he recorded the studio version of this song, Mother, Father in ONE take. This song is said to be a very difficult song to sing as reported by vocal coaches. In an interview Jonathan Cain said that Steve Perry recorded this song in the studio in 1 Take! Though Steve made it seem as though it was effortless, it was a song that wasn't performed night after night, for weeks and months on end, when on tours because it was vocally too taxing. Still Steve is phenomenal, he can sing it live on stage, just as good or better than the studio version. Visually you get the bonus of seeing the emotion that he puts into as it reaches into soul and gives you chills. You will experience this everytime you react to a Journey song with Steve Perry...promise!

Just a word of advice. Whenever you do an 80’s group you should always do a live version. These guys earned their way night after night. Go all the way down the Journey rabbit hole and follow up with Queen, Bob Seger, Kansas, Boston and Styx just to name a few ❤

This performance was voted the greatest live performance of any artist/band of all time. Steve said that this song was one of the most demanding Journey song. Steve's voice is studied in universities. Many times, the software that isolates vocals can't distinguish between his voice and instruments, so it takes out parts of his vocals like the notes that he hit at the end. The very end... that is the original mic drop. 😂
What makes this song so beautiful is that through verses and the chorus and solos it is cohesive, it flows, there is no wasted effort on anything - and oh yeah, the voice.

Please listen to the whole 1981 Journey Live From Houston Escape Tour concert. It will blow you away. Neal Schon is the lead guitarist who was playing professionally with Santana when he was 15! Listen to "Lights" , "Wheel In The Sky", "Still They Ride","Why Can't This Night Go on Forever", "Faithfully", "Open Arms". Yes they always had this piano at every concert, they called it The Whale. Journey's road crew were beasts Steve praised them in his speech at the 2017 induction to the Rock &Roll Hall of Fame. You will love Steve's voice they don't have not one bad song. Also listen to the iconic Don't Stop Believin' from the live from Houston concert! Steve's voice is stunning!

These FIVE were magic together! Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Neal Schon (Guitar), and Steve Perry when they wrote songs together, amazing! Jonathan Cain survived his school burning down in Chicago in 1958.

@@thefamm Jonathan Cain's father believed he was destined for great things and sent him to be educated at a music conservatory. He always would tell anyone who would listen that he had a dream that Jon would perform before an audience of 20,000 people, he was wrong, it was 90,000 people.

I was at this show in 1981. 41 years later still my favorite show I attended. Neal Schon is the guitarist. Started playing for Santana at 15 years old. One of the most underrated guitarist around. No one like Steve 'The Voice' Perry.
Nice reaction. Its been a year now since I went down the Journey Rabbit hole. And I don't regret it one bit. Steve Perry is the greatest male vocalist of all time. He is so graceful with his voice control and his pitch is perfect for the band. He truly is the voice of Journey. There are 7 main journey studio albums with Steve Perry as the singer. Steve Perry also had his own solo career proving he is a good songwriter as well. He has 4 solo albums. Journey is my favorite rock band next to the legendary Canadian rock band RUSH. Journey is musical therapy for me. I listen to Steve Perry everyday almost every minute. Studying his vocals and just having a blast singing along.

He started playing with Santana at the age of 15. He’s a prodigy. Self-taught. Drums is Steve Smith. Keys is Jonathan Cain and bass guitar is Ross Valory. Journey’s music catalog is vast and deep. Definitely worth your time. “Wheel in the sky” 1978 original video should be up next. IMO. Journey On.

I saw Journey live in 1983 during the Frontiers Tour...I was just 15 years old. Still have the ticket stub...the best concert I ever went to. Journey with Steve Perry sounded better live. I love Journey. The singer is Steve Perry and the lead guitarist is Neal Schon. Neal Schon joined Santana when he was like 17 yrs old. Then started Journey. I had one Journey album (Next) before Steve Perry joined...and wow, did Perry make a huge difference for the band.
This sing gave me the chills when it came out. My mom and sister were at each other all the time and I felt the family was falling apart. 😢

Leppard is def 2nd or 3rd shelf rock from that era of pop/rock. Journey was the top of the heap. So many top 10 tunes, and so effin' good in concert, often better versions than the albums. During this era, it was Steve Perry "The Voice", Neal Schon (started with Santana @17yrs old) guitars, Jonathan Cain keyboard & rhythm guitar, Steve Smith drums, & Ross Valory on bass.
Steve Perry is vocal virtuoso, Neal Schon awesome guitarist, Jonathan Cain talented keyboardist and pianist, Steve Smith amazing drummer and Ross Valory cool bass...Nope Neal doesn't look like either of those guys😂 need to check out more live performances from Journey with Steve Perry such as Open Arms, Stone in Love, When You Love A Woman, Why Cant This Night Go On Forever, Lights, Wheel In the Sky, Lovin Touchin Squeezin, Any Way You Want It. the list goes on and on...Sam Cook was one of Steve Perry's influences on vocal style when he was young.

Often times Jonathan Cain plays piano and keyboards at the same time on many of their songs. Neal Schon on guitar in Journey's early years has a massive afro and he rocked it.

10/3/23 and i just found you but i was living in CA when Journey blew up every radio ststionand every smalltime band playing Wheel in the Sky! There's no other voice like Steve Perry's and, man do i miss him! I'm now 73 and that was my era! Journey, Jefferson Airplane, Joplin, tell me when to stop! And i still crank it all up when my neighbors are gone!! ❤

Absolutely one of the best live(and studio) bands of all time. Pure talent. Steve Perry was dubbed "THE VOICE" by John Bon Jovi back in the early '80s and he was spot on. GOD given talent there. Steve Perry never took singing lessons growing up, just started singing with his mom.
They always have a piano at their concerts and it had a name "the whale" and it was loaded in and out before and after every concert ... Steve Perry honored the road crew, at the RRHOF in 2017 for their tireless efforts packing in and out everything!. The guitarist is Neal Schon and he's a rock chick magnet pleeeze cannot compare to Richard Simmons the exorcize guru in short shorts. This man was playing with Santana since he was 15!!! And could have joined Eric Clapton' s band at that time as well, but chose Santana because of his friendship with Greg Rollie. I know this is all before your time. So much you'll be interested in learning more about Journey!
Steve Perry is the lead vocalist and is considered to be the best, Neil Schon is the guitarist, Ross Valory bass guitar, Steve Smith drummer(very underrated) Jonathan Cain keyboards! Journey has a ton of hits you can choose from: Separate Ways, Faithfully, Any Way You Want It, Lights, Lovin Touchin Squeezin, etc... If look at their greatest hits they're all excellent !

That’s Neal Schon on the guitar. He started out with Santana when he was 16, and later formed Journey with fellow Santana alum Gregg Rolie. (In fact, he and bassist Ross Valory are the only remaining founding members of the band - both Jonathan Cain (keys) and Steve Perry (lead vocals) joined a few years into the band's career, and Steve left the band in the 90s). Neal tends to rank pretty high on lists of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. His sense of melody is probably unsurpassed among rock guitarists.

Lmbo, you are in trouble now. They have got you on the Steve Perry. Brother, if Aretha Franklin says he's the best rock and roll voice she's ever heard that carries some serious weight. Whenever you think you've heard their best then you get shocked again. That's Neil Schon on guitar, Jonathan Cain on Piano/Keyboards, Steve Perry Lead Vocals, Steve Smith Drums and I think either Ross Valory or Greg Rolle on Bass. By far my most favorite band of all time. They are just unbelievable.
