I'm sure Kitkat adverts are exactly what he intended when he wrote the books! Icecream, How could he not want his brand on an icecream?! It's going to be glorious just wait till it's out and season 3! Well, what did you think of the interviews and George R.R. Martins comments? To be so amazed that a fan could not just like more content :O Let me know your thoughts down below, and as always, thanks for watching :)

Edit: To be clear Amazon marketing LoTR like this is wholly disgusting. I’m all for capitalism but not at the expense of Tolkien’s legacy. LoTR isn’t a some generic idea you can slap onto a cereal box. It’s a beloved work of literature not to be exploited by a bunch of amoral hacks.

I guess it's okay for me to make an official rewrite of Song of Ice and Fire where it's a world of talking poop people and instead of fighting with swords they poop more poop at one another. He should approve because things have to change regardless of who does it. In fact, he should happily promote my work for me and ensure I get proceeds. What an a-hole.

Thing is, when I was watching interviews of the the old cast from Jacksons LotR movies I felt like some of those actors truly loved their craft and were incredibly happy to have had the privilege of playing those roles. Like they made part of those characters their own and part of themselves into the characters they portrayed. This is especially true for Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, Viggo Mortensen and Sean Bean. All of them took their roles seriously.
With the Rings of Power cast I get the impression that they aren't actors at all, just activists who took the opportunity to get screen time to spread their message, and they're just putting up with all that pesky nerd stuff but actually loathe it.

    • @gianna526
      @gianna526 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

Yep! They all seemed so happy to do it, and they still talk about it today. And they also made meaningful friendships that last till today, Dom and Billy even started a podcast together. Maybe the actors on this show are friends as well, but I doubt they'll still be best friends in 20+ years.

That's most probably because showrunners and actors *DO* loathe Tolkien and his work and all the pesky nerd stuff.
There is such a massive emphasis on activism and being self-absorbed that I think that even those who never read Tolkien or saw the trilogy or The Hobbit could have a hard time getting past that and into the story.
Because the whole clumsy promotion of Rangs of Power is about *NOTHING ELSE* than blatant activism. And selling ice cream.

Sort of like an undeveloped estate whose original owners requested that the land remained a garden forever. Yes since there is no other development or ruins to build around, you have a rare blank slate where you could build anything you wanted without making some compromises you otherwise would have to. But as soon as you build something there you destroy something sacred that was left untouched for a reason, not just for you to play around with.

Very on point. In the books, the contrast between the landside of The Shire and the pollution of Isengard and Mordor reflected Tolkien's worry about the rise of industrialization.
These faux actors are really showing just how badly they neither know nor care about the source material.

Tolkien did indeed leave a plot of land, a plot he had planted and had flourished into a beautiful garden. It brought people from all corners of the land to see what Tolkien had produced. Then some trespassers with naught, but greed on their minds came upon the plot. Indeed they did strike oil when they dug into the earth, but having neither the talent nor skills to capture it, the oil spilled into the garden threatening to poison all the plot.

So I'm confused. This actor said he dreamt of being an elf, but there were no elves that looked like him. Did he want to be an elf or not? Legions of little kids who want to be Transformers or what have you are not at all dissuaded by the fact that they look nothing like a giant, metallic robot, either. What's this guy's problem?

Plus "I always wanted to be an elf" just sounds like bs to be honest. It's not like that was actually a possibility for ANYONE regardless of skin colour. Can you imagine? At a recruitment office a young Caucasian man with long hair is being asked what sort of career he wants...."Well, I want to be an elf!" XD
But "I always wanted to be an elf" is the sort of thing that's easy for an actor to say AFTER they've been cast in a role, that makes it SOUND like this is just the right role for them. So much sales talk from the cast and crew on this one, instead of plot or character points that would get someone interested in the story.

"Now it seems half of the people who call themselves Star Trek fans hate Star Trek and the Tolkien fans hate Rings of Power. What the hell?" Well, Mr. Martin, that's because that half of the fans recognize that what is currently being produced under the titles of Star Trek and Rings of Power have very little other than Nomenclature in common with the properties they are so invested in. It's a bit like Lamborghini announcing that under new management, they're opening a new vehicle line, and then presenting 4 new models of tricycles. Do you see where fans might be a bit... disappointed?

"I love historical Chinese dramas, but I always felt sad that there was never anyone who looked like me in them. So when the chance to audition for Wu Zetian came, I was so happy I got the role as a strong black woman of color. Now, people like me can see our race properly depicted in Eastern historical pieces." Would be batshit to say something like that and expect something like that to happen. Why some people can't understand that some stories won't have people that look like you and that's not a bad thing, is a mystery to me.
I dislike the messages this thing is sending. You have to be stereotypically manly as a woman to be a strong female character. You have to depict real world racial demographics in your stories otherwise it's wrong (code for racist). The only thing that matters is your skin color, not a culture or a history. In works like Tolkien's that's all about how history and culture impacted groups of people, seeing white characters essentially draped in a black skin to score cheap diversity points is disgusting. It's like asking for a birthday party but all you get is a party planned for somebody else. The person who'd give you something like that is not your friend. Those show runners just want to do their own GoT styled bs and used Tolkien and the diversity hires as both their sword and shield.

"You have to depict real world racial demographics in your stories otherwise it's wrong (code for racist)." ---No offense, but this is NOT what they're doing. 1-2% of the population is gay. In film and series, it's 10 times that. In Britain, 3% of the population is black. In series, it's about 20%. In the U.S. about 6% of police Captains are black. In series, it's about 50%. As a huge fan of Chinese historical dramas, whose 2nd favourite movie of all times is Red Cliff (the 5 hour version), and... as a Slavic woman; I have to say I am happy af that Chinese historical dramas are made by the Chinese. Because if Hollywood was in charge; by now, we sure as heck WOULD have a black sword wielding xiao qiao bettering Cao Cao in a sword fight and a latino zhuge liang rap battling a white Sun Quin, so help me...
In fact, I am convinced John Woo went to China to make Red Cliff because Holywood would DEMAND black people in the movie. Just like you, I can't possibly understand these "nobody in the story has the same skin colour as I do so I can't relate" troglodytes taking over the world. Maybe Drahomir is right, maybe it's exactly that.
( And I mean, I'm not going to lie, I would literally soil my pants if Zhang Fengyi found his way to LotR. But as Khamul the Easterling or an original Easterling character. Can you imagine a character he is capable of playing, with just the right balance of sympathetic and villanous, sent down a road of becoming a Nazgul? You can have a season or 2 seasons of just that; a perfect tragic story focusing on mortality, it's consequences and what happens if one does not accept it. But I bet if they DID get him, they'd cast him as a sword fighting dwarf because tilted eyes + yellow skin on dwarfs - CHECK! )

It's insane to me to watch what Martin said. Dude is still alive and got to see how his work could be bastardized and his legacy tarnished. Tolkien isn't even here to defend himself. How hard would it be for Martin to think 50 years into the future after he's died, and imagine some shit stain taking his lore and perverting it into something he wouldn't have wanted.

    • @codinghusky5196
      @codinghusky5196 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I... imagine he doesn't care about his work as much as Tolkien did.
And to be perfectly honest, it doesn't surprise me. Tolkien's work is based in JRR's deeply rooted feeling of sadness of the world being perverted by war and industry, and a good way of life destroyed - which is how he percieved the "real world" at the time. His fear of death and attempts to rationalize it. His hope and faith in the "small people" and "simple acts of kindness".
Martin's work seems to be based in his sexual fantasies: "GoT or 5oo Shades of How You Can Get A Character Raped".

Its baffling really. Wokeness is obviously in decline. The general public has made it crystal clear that we don't want to be lectured to. And anytime present day politics is shoe horned into the story. Thats exactly what they're doing. They had time to at least minimize the woke. But they're actually promoting it that way. It is guaranteed to fail because of it. This isn't Marvel. LOTR fans aren't gen z's that grew up with it. Marvel's gotten away with it to a small extent but even that is fading quickly. So naturally, Amazon has jumped head first into the single most divisive political ideology on earth atm.

Poison thrown casually into the well, so that, when the spring of dreams is toxic and people believe in _nothing at all_, their hopes and imaginings of better worlds destroyed by what they no longer think has value; a new doctrinal ideology will have less resistance in replacing what is good.
The evil lies in what wokeness allows to happen next by destroying all other articles of comparison so that the sheer wretchedness of what is left to believe in, has no competition from genuine beauty.

Similarly with other demi-humans the dwarf version of me looked like me, but also like a dwarf, shorter, more muscular, and a glorious beard. The only demi-human that didn't stay looking like me was the svirfneblin version of myself. That guy basically looked like a mini-Nosferatu and thats' the best I could do with 4 charisma. I love the stupidity that leads someone to say, "I don't understand how someone can come to hate something they once loved." Like...really? You can't understand how someone could stop loving something they once loved? How about this...
Your favorite restaurant serves a dish you absolutely love. That dish is made with beef, onion, garlic, and rosemary. It's your favorite food of all time. The restaurant then hires a new chef who changes the recipe for your favorite dish: they switch the garlic for shallots, the onion for bell pepper, the rosemary for marjoram, and the beef for salmon. But they keep calling it by the same name, and they don't list the new ingredients on the menu. When you order that dish after the changes, you are almost certainly going to be angry and "hate" the dish. Because it isn't the same dish. It may still be delicious. It could possibly have even become your new favorite food. But you're still going to be pissed, and that deception could absolutely lead you to "hate" that restaurant and refuse to dine there again.
This is an incredibly simple concept to grasp. Or at least it should be.

Baffles me how George R.R. Martin wonders how people can come to hate something they once loved. Love and hate are 2 sides of the same coin. When something or someone you love spurns you, the love turns to hate. When GoT characters who have experienced lifelong character arcs suddenly make choices and actions that don't make logical sense, that go against their characters, they are no longer the characters we have grown to love. The characters we love have been spurned in order to force a plot point a writer/director wants in the story whether or not it makes sense.
That is what film writing has come down to, imagining cool or fun plot points or scenes and trying to force them to be connected with filler story. Same thing with political views and standings. I desperately hope this billion dollar bomb will be the turning point in the entertainment industry we need to re-focus on simply telling a good story. There is evidence on the fringes, Terminal List achieving popularity, Top Gun crushing the box office, Arcane taking the fantasy world by surprise. Once the money-people funding the entertainment connect the dots between good story = makes money and political/social agenda = less money then the audience will be in for some great entertainment once again. Fingers crossed RoP will be the flop that starts The Great Entertainment Revolution.

The only thing ridiculous about the Harfoots is that they're Nomads by choice - they should have been fleeing the predation of Orcs, searching for a new home (the Shire).

This isn't Tolkien and I've HATED everyone's appropriation of Tolkien's "other minds and hands" quote. I think "other minds and hands" would be something more akin to the ways we have seen mythologies studied, translated, artistic renditions, and music compositions created. Eddaic stories, Arthurian Legends, you can see this in Tolkiens translations of Gawain and the Green Knight, Sigurd and Gudrun, The Fall of Arthur, and Beowulf. Certainly not a megacorporation franchising it for content, a wholly new set of stories that scrubs what Tolkien ACTUALLY wrote, even calling it The Lord of the Rings only making their title a sub-title. It's inappropriate. A co-opting, a hijacking, an appropriation. For example, these other folks have articulated this beautifully:
From Rancid Polecat: "when reading that full quote it’s interesting that it starts with “Don’t Laugh!” and ends with “Absurd”. So I think the whole passage is his flight of fancy that he can create his own legend set in NW Europe- At least at the time of that letter’s writing. I got the sense he was talking about a shared cultural heritage of stories (like Arthur etc) that he alone cannot create, hence “Absurd”. For them to use that quote out of context as permission to bastardize his own stories is amazing. Especially when we have his scathing letter about the 1958 movie script treatment that he clearly felt was an abomination . That is a more “applicable” quotation to the RoP.
From Tar-Elenion Maranwe: Everything Tolkien wrote is canon. Anything Tolkien did not write is not canon. And yes, the passage is taken of context. The passage starts with a 'once upon a time'. The letter was written some years before LotR had been published. It is referring back to when Tolkien was starting his 'Lost Tales' mythology. The passage is not referring to LotR or his developed mythology. Letters 201, 207, 210 and 292 are more to the point of Tolkien's thoughts on his legendarium.

NO architect wants to see his greatest works smashed to pieces, gutted, and turned into something else. It's not a subtle difference and even SJWs should have figured it out. As the vast majority of the actors and actresses in this 3 ring circus are breaking into the acting gig for the first time (as I understand it) I'm of the belief they are being provided all their talking points when giving interviews, panel discussions, etc. So, you would think that they'd all be reading from the same sheet of music as the show runners and that very silly producer.
That hasn't been the case though. Yeah, they all ensure they emphasize the "diversity & inclusion" nonsense but then totally contradict the boobsie twins emphasis on staying "true to Tolkien's wishes". Those two sillies even contradict their own story line constantly; "Go back to the book....ad nauseum" BUT "tell our own unique and totally new concept, to write the story Tolkien never did". Um, which is it kiddies?
It doesn't matter what your intent is anyway, if the results totally contradict the source. Every indication so far, displays huge contradictions to the source.
They'll probably hook a large number of casuals, normies, and/or those that don't give a damn about Tolkien, they just want to watch something as time filler but as for The Tolkien Faithful?
You've done the worst thing possible, subverted expectations with huge contradictions to the Literary Masterpiece we've grown to love. Your time henceforth trying to win us over will be wasted. You may not care right now but in a few years, you'll regret your decisions.

When will creators and showrunners and producers of all types of media these days learn that they're not entitled to people liking what they made just because they made it? If you want a fanbase, you have to earn it. If you want to make an adaptation and change things from how they were in the original work, you have to show that those changes are worthwhile or that there are other good reasons to enjoy your adaptation.
I am not a fan of Tolkien the brand, I am a fan of Tolkien the man. I accept Peter Jackson's trilogy as flawed but enjoyable, partially because of nostalgia, partially because they're pretty good movies on their own, and partly because I accept that there is no such thing as a perfect adaptation between media as different as novel and film.
I watched the Hobbit trilogy and didn't like it. It went too far in the changes and failed to capture the original appropriately (though there's probably a half-decent adaptation in there somewhere among the bloat).
The people behind Rings of Power have shown time and time again through their marketing that they neither understand nor respect Tolkien's work, and I will not be watching it. Aside from the blatant timeline compression, unnecessary changes from the lore, and random new characters no one will care about, the single statement that it wouldn't feel like Tolkien without hobbits (or something that they are trying to pass off as "not hobbits" to justify their nonsense with a weasely excuse) was enough for me.

My previous comment was partially in response to the GRRM quote played in this video, where he seems confused why fans of old Star Trek don't like new Star Trek and Tolkien fans don't like Rings of Power. It's almost like fans have minds of their own and know what they like about things they like. It's almost like fans aren't supposed to like anything with [BRAND] name on it just because they are fans of [BRAND]. It's almost as if you change what [BRAND] is for no good reason, then fans of what [BRAND] used to be will see it is no longer the [BRAND] they like, feel betrayed, and criticize it. The people who complain about "toxic fandoms" seem to think that fans should just shut up and like [BRAND] no matter what they do to it. I have watched and read and listenend to various different posts, videos and overall complaints about this series from the moment I learned of its existence, and while many of them have had at least something of merit to add to the overall discussion, I think the most significant point has ever been this: the fact that it is Amazon that has the rights to this story, Amazon that is sinking its grasping fingers into the labour of love of THIS AUTHOR, is by far the greatest crime here, bar none. Tolkien abhorred everything Amazon has come to represent -- unquenchable greed, destruction of the environment and the efforts and stability of life of the smaller folk, blind hubris, evil masquerading as progress towards betterment. Back in his day, Tolkien recognised these qualities (as well as others of a more creatively bankrupt nature) in the Walt Disney company and forbade them from ever touching his work; and how right he was to do so, seeing what they've now become. And yet, in a twist of true tragedy, his books found their way into the hands of an even viler entity eventually, all because his family sought to line their pockets with more millions, as though they hadn't made enough of those already on the back of his lifetime of toil and trials.
Even if Amazon had managed to produce an absolutely stunning adaption of this material, one faithful to the vision of its source to the letter, I would still be boycotting the living lights out of it and refusing to spend a single cent -- a single second of viewing time -- in support of their efforts, because a corporate abomination such as Amazon does not deserve to so much as speak Tolkien's name, much less obtain his legacy. He would not even at swordpoint have approved of their involvement with his beloved texts and characters, and that alone, I believe, is reason enough for anyone who has ever treasured anything this man has done to follow suit when bestowing judgement upon the present circumstances.

A huge THANK YOU for this video, it got some crucially important points that I've been thinking of but haven't been able to articulate in such clear and entertaining way. The way you exposed the methods used by modern corporations to make movies using a mixture of nostalgia to drive in the established fans, and add in new stupid things really had me thinking.
Another thing I thaught about: the danger with series is that, even if it is bad, you can still end up glued to the screen just to find out how the events unfold, or you become affectionate to the characters, not because they're something particularly good, but because of the long expousure time you spent with them. You grow accustomed to them and so they become like known people to you and you MUST see their stories unfold. I've had this experience with multiple average tv shows. That's the reason they make mostly tv series nowadays, because it is easier to lock the viewer on the screen using the characters, and you really don't have to care about making a "structured" story, with a dramatic arch, like in a film for example.
Sorry for my english, hope I was clear.

Little is said about it, but Numenoreans had colonies there, married the locals, the local people were black, since it's primordial Africa. It wouldn't involve screwing up the established lore, and could be pretty interesting. There were cults to Ungoliant in Far Harad. Stories about the heroes fighting them could be fun. And since there were colonies from Numenor you could still have Numenor show up. Hell, just do the foundation of Umbar.

Though he also refers to them as the 'troll-men' and it's pretty nebulous what that means. And yes, Harad is inhabited by people, the Haradrim, inspired by Arabs and North Africans like Berbers. I'm just saying that there absolutely were depictions of elves with brown skin in popular fantasy fiction, even if they did not necessarily match the descriptions. I'm sure there were earlier depictions with pitch black skin as well.

I think that idiot was talking specifically about tolkins elfes, since there were visual depictions of them at the time already. But since Tolkins world is based on angle-sackson/germanic/Northern folklore, they were of course not dark skinned.
What really gets me is the childish, simplistic world view of people like that. Elves are a different SPECIES than humans. What on earth does skin color have to do with it, when we are talking about completely different species (yes they can create hybrids, but tolkien was very clear that Elves, dwarfs and hobbits are NOT just different subsets of humans).
Would that guy also feel like a black/brown dragon is somehow representing him more than a white/green/red/golden one? I mean, how simplified is their approach to empathy if its more about what color the person is (color meaning actual color here, not race) vs. if it is literally ANOTHER SPECIES than yourself?

Tolkiens genius work of art is holy to the people who love him and holds his creations close to heart. And for it to be handled with disrespect feels like blasphemy. And that is what fans hate. They hate the blasphemy of something holy. I think that is what star trek fans, star wars fans and LOTR fans feel. We hate the blasphemy of what we love!

Exactly! As a black woman who fell in love with sci-fi and fantasy as a girl, good story and characterization made it easy for me to relate to and empathize with a story/character. Of course I liked to see my image represented but not under the flimsy guise of diversity at the expense of world-building or story!

Instead of making a story in the same manner as Tolkien we decided to make something completely different using Tolkien's work as a skin suit because no one would be interested in it otherwise.
Hey!? Why does no one want our product bereft of what made people love Tolkien's works?

I’m in complete agreement. Here’s the REAL TRICK though for us. We have to practice what we preach. The only way we can change these trends of literal INTELLECTUAL ROBBERY is that we must NOT WATCH the series. Watching it and hating it still get Amazon what they want: viewership. Am I curious regarding how badly mangled and disrespected will be Tolkien Lore and want to see the train wreck myself? Completely and utterly. However, I/we need to practice what we preach, else Amazon will throw it back in our faces and say “look how many people are watching it; all of these complaints are just fringe criticism”. Take a stand, ignore the brand.

I think this was a vehicle Bezos thought would increase their sub count & spent accordingly. Many are angry enough to have already cancelled with others waiting for its release to send their message. Yes, some will watch anyway but enough? Netflix realised they couldn't continue & made some moves. They'd allowed various people to greenlight shows with little oversight. Gave activists the idea it was okay to barge into senior meetings to demand show removals & leak contracts. Hollywood is slow but Amazon will learn Netflix lesson. YTers will watch & we can get feedback from them without resorting to views.
