Why You Should Have Kids... Lots of Them

  • Yes, parenting is hard, but that’s not all it is. But it seems like a lot of parents have become exclusively fixated on the difficulty and they’ve forgotten the reasons why it’s worth doing, so I wanted to take a moment to try to reemphasize what I think those reasons are from my own experience.
Most people believe there’s value in being exposed to a variety of experiences in this life, but by the time you get to be a mature adult, you start to act like you’ve seen it all. You lose your sense of wonder and curiosity.
An older friend of mine who grew up in Great Britain was telling me about the fact that historic castles and cathedrals are of no interest to her because she had seen enough of them when she lived there and I was wondering how anyone could take all of that beauty and heritage for granted, but that’s what happens after a while. She was living in a place people will fly to from all over the world and she thinks it’s all just tedious.
No matter how amazing our experiences or surroundings can be, once we’ve seen it a few times, it becomes easy to fall into a pattern of taking it for granted. Something about the experience of becoming and adult infuses us with an attitude like know it all. We forget that life can be an adventure of discovery.
Having kids allows us to discover the world again for a second time through the experiences of our children. We experience their sense of wonder and curiosity as we teach them and try to nurture those experiences.
It’s like you get to go on the adventure of life again for the first time. Experiences like learning to walk and talk, seeing an animal up close for the first time, climbing a tree, learning to read and write , watching Darth Vader tell Luke that he’s his Father for the first time.
And if you’re lucky, you get to be a grandparent and do it all again for a third time.
Seeing my parents become grandparents has been really interesting and beautiful to watch because they are different with the kids this time around. Their priorities when they interact with or care for the kids is different from my priorities as a parent and they don’t treat them the way they treated us when they were parents.
It’s like every time you experience childhood again as a parent and then as a grandparent, you bring a whole new depth of wisdom and joyfulness to it. Maybe this is what Jesus meant when he said that unless we become like little Children, we won’t enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Something about our lives and our nature seems like it’s designed for us to re-experience childhood over and over and that our purpose can be discovered in that experience.
I happen to believe that our purpose in life is to love others as we do ourselves. That’s much easier said than done because we happen to be extremely selfish by nature and this is something that we don’t realize until our selfishness is put to the test.
When we have children of our own and suddenly have to learn to reorient our priorities in the interest of someone else, we quickly discover how much of a strain it puts on our selfish nature and that can be extremely eye opening and good for us.
As I said before, learning to love other people is easier said than done but for whatever reason, call it evolutionary design or divine providence, the natural order of our lives seems to be designed to make this process easier for us if we embrace it.
If we are, by nature, selfish, then the best way for us to learn to love someone other than ourselves, is by creating someone who is as much like us as possible. That’s what having children can do for us. It gently invites us into an experience of loving someone who isn’t us but closely resembles us as much as possible.
It’s a first step to learning to love someone who isn’t you but who is much easier to love than some random person would be because they look like you, they’re tiny and adorable, and they will have similar afflictions to you which will inspire your sense of compassion and empathy much easier than it would for someone who is afflicted with something you can’t relate to.
Lastly, I want to encourage you to have as many kids as you can. There are more reasons for this than I can describe, but one of the most surprising reasons is because it’s easier. The more kids you have, the more they learn to amuse and rely on each other.

the video you shared only discusses about there being enough food for everyone (which you should already know isn't true, Every second a person dies of hunger. Right now, more than 1 billion people suffer from hunger. This means that 1 in every 6 people on Earth don't get enough food to live a healthy life) the amount of grains&wheat being consumed by 56 Billion farm animals that are slaughtered for our tastebuds every year is enough to feed 3 billion people (1 billion people currently suffering from starvation could do with farm animals are currently eating). The amount of food there is for people shouldn't be your only concern. Think about why 14 billion pounds of garbage goes into ocean every year? Because most humans are wasteful using indisposable materials & why are there are 56 Billion farm animals slaughtered every year? because humankind is responsible for this mass production (inseminating farm animals to breed more animals) to please our tastebuds. Why are there so many animals slaughtered for food? because over 5 billion people (including your family of 7) enjoy the taste of their flesh. 56 billion animals slaughtered every year account for 51% of pollution, up to 200 species going extinct everyday, ocean dead zones quadrupled since 1950 & using up 1/3 of earths fresh drinking water. Most people (like you) don't want to become vegan and won't give up eating meat so the only realistic option is to have less people not more. So yes the world's population is the highest it's ever been which is why more animals are suffering in factory farms, more species are becoming extinct and ocean dead zones are increasing. You appear to be a nice man and i'm sure you're a great father, just remember it's ok to agree that the problems of the world i've listed to you are because of Overpopulation

P.s - youre religious so i have this feeling you want to believe that God put animals on earth for us to eat on a daily basis for our nourishment, but think about it: if God put animals on earth for us to eat, why would he make them sentient like us? they want love, companionship, avoid fear/pain and protect their young just like us humans do. Also it's already been proven to that it's not good for our health to eat animal based products. Vegans/vegetarians have always had the lowest rates of cancers, diabetes, hypertension, obesity & heart disease. I do respect the man in your video who managed to grow more wheat its just a shame it's being overfed to 56billion animals every year to please the tastebuds of you and 6 billion other people

My first response is that you were probably public schooled. That makes an _enormous_ difference.
The homeschooling community and the religious large family community overlap a lot, so this isn’t actually a common problem.
Since a large number of big families also homeschool, the siblings spend almost all the time with each other. There are lots of fights and spats of course, but you kind of have to learn to get along with everyone, if everyone wants to live relatively peacefully. So you just… do.
I’m speaking from experience, as the second oldest of *_nine_* homeschooled children! Most of the families I knew growing up with were also that large and also homeschooled, and we were all the same.
There were lots of disagreements, but largely, we got along and were very close, because we spent so much time together.
You don’t get that in a family where all the kids go to public schools every day. Of course you’re not gonna be close.

Bc no one can consent to being born, it should be assumed that consent to being born doesn’t exist => no action should be taken on behalf of the child. Just like how it’s not okay to r@pe an unconscious person just because they can’t consent to your act. Everyone has the rights to eternal peace & freedom from all harm, both of which can only result from remaining in the void. Therefore, every human being has the right to NOT be born so long as they cannot provide informed consent to being born. Otherwise, bringing a child into the world w/o consent = violation of their autonomy & cannot be ethically justified! Argument is still valid even if life was a utopia bc even a perfect life doesn’t appeal to the nonexistent as they, by definition, don’t exist and therefore, they have NO NEED for a perfect life. They simply don’t need even the best life imaginable & it’s immoral to impose it upon them because they never consented to experiencing said life.

" I want to take on the challenge of being a parent". " I need someone to take care of me when I get older". " I don't want to be lonely". " Having a baby will save my marriage". It's almost always me, me, me.

Some comments are very ignorant. Having or not having kids should not depend on global environmental factors unless you are directly affected by it, like living in a war zone. The most important factor is whether you want to have kids. And unlike a lot of people say, not everyone get that parental instinct activated once they have a child. The saddest thing to see is a child growing up with a parent or parents who don't really want him or her. What could be sadder than that? They don't ask to be born. So don't have kids out of some religious belief or societal pressures. Have kids because you so desperately want to shower one with love. And if you don't want to have one, then don't have one. There is nothing wrong with that.

I've always said the first kid is the hardest because it's an infinite increase in the number of children that you have. Child number 2 is only a 100% increase. Child Number 3 is only a 50% increase. And so on. Of course having multiples like twins will throw these numbers off slightly, but overall the pattern holds. The more children you have the smaller the increase in overall number of children and the more equipped you are.

This is a great way to put it! That’s exactly what I experienced as the second oldest of nine children to my wonderful Christian parents.
People always thought that every new kid equaled the exact same amount of work that the first kid takes… But that’s not true.
With each successive kid, each of the older kids could take on more responsibility, handle more chores, and take care of themselves better - so actually, the more kids my parents had, the more smoothly everything runs, because everybody pitches in and pulls their own weight!

@Ye Ye Well, my mom had 9 children, and she would testify the _exact_ same thing as Mr. West. And she homeschooled us, so I grew up seeing it all happen. The first kid or two IS the hardest, and dealing with more DOES get progressively easier with each child.
For one, the older children can quite quickly help out with more and more chores as they get older, so mom isn't doing _everything,_ or even close to everything.
Second, my mom (who, again, had NINE kids) has always said that the body gets used to the process quickly, and normally, each labor is both shorter and easier than the last.
So, from a mother who HAS gone through the pregnancies AND taking care of all the kids: the OP is right. :)

When man is now the massively dominant creature, in a hundred years of 6 children per family with modern medicine meaning that many children/ mothers in labour aren’t dying (obviously a good thing but that’s what high birth rates were for) where are all the humans and animals going to live , in a way that still allows the earth to be a green and pleasant place not a mass of high rise buildings and housing estates?. We simply can’t keep procreating at catholic rates no matter how delightful little mini mes are.

      G. I. Adopting is the act of creating a loving home and family for someone who would otherwise be an orphan. To create isn’t just to make something but to elevate the wellbeing of the world one act at a time. Adopting fits this framework because by helping another in need and showing them love when you aren’t expected to provides that person with the tools to help others. Otherwise, they might be needlessly suffering. To give of one’s self to elevate the wellbeing in the world is what creation is. I believing having children is a beautiful aspect of life.. However, I believe some people are not mentally, and emotionally equipped to have children. I’m a Christian, and I grew up in a Christian household, but my childhood was not easy. My father was severely abused as a child, and he didn’t work on his inner most issues before having children. He ended up abusing me my entire life, and has even done so in my adult life a few times. My father is a very wounded person, and he was not equipped to have children, and he projected his issues onto me growing up. My sister wasn’t hardly ever abused, but for some reason he focused all his abuse onto me. People like him should not have children. My mother is a saint practically, and I couldn’t have asked for a better mother. So, at least I had her in my life to cling to when things got bad. My mum doesn’t believe in divorce, because the Bible says God hates divorce. So, she stayed with him even though he nearly killed me when I was 12. She didn’t know just how wounded of a person he was when they got married, and he didn’t show any abusive traits until about a year after they got married. I believe most of the world is not equipped to handle children mentally, and emotionally. Even in Christian households like mine, abuse happens. So, I believe only about 10% of the populace is even mature enough, and stable enough to have children. For those people that are equipped to handle children, then I believe they should have many children, but for those that are not, they shouldn’t even have any children at all.

Antinatalism is the ethical position that views the birth of sentient beings as morally wrong. The justifications are: harm/suffering prevention, the questionable nature of gambling with another life, & the impossibility of consent to be born.
    - No one has the moral right to inflict serious, preventable harms upon others without their consent! Existence brings preventable, guaranteed harm & is imposed without consent. Because a child cannot consent to being born, the default should be to assume that consent doesn’t exist and that no action should be taken on the child’s behalf. Just like how it’s not okay to r@pe an unconscious person just because they can’t consent to or refuse to participate in the act!
    - Everyone experiences at least some suffering, and some people experience disproportionately more suffering than others. Creating a life is inherently unfair & inconsiderate!
    - Everyone has the rights to eternal peace & the freedom from all harm, both of which can only result from remaining in the void. Therefore, every human being has the right to NOT be born so long as they can’t waive their rights by providing informed consent to being born. Procreation is the biggest violation of a child’s autonomy there is!
    - An opinion being “negative” doesn’t make it untrue. On the contrary, it’s realistic as suffering is inevitable, & it’s impossible for someone to consent to life.
    - Procreation is simply not anyone’s risk to take because they won’t be the ones suffering any negative consequences of their decision to procreate-their children will!
    - By procreating, you are intentionally harming your “loved ones” for your own selfish desires to attain a sense of purpose, fulfillment, pride, achievement, or superior social status.
    - There’s no reason to create a child that’s for the child’s sake. For a potential child, birth doesn’t solve any problem that it doesn’t first create. All positives in life, such as love, happiness, or good food are based on fulfilling needs, which get created by birth. Creating a life is creating a host of needs for no need.
    - A nonexistent “person” cannot miss out on anything good since they don’t exist & the nonexistent have no needs or desires, including the desire for life itself or any of its pleasures.
    - For the betterment of humans, the environment, & other sentient beings, humans need to go extinct. No one is being harmed by the extinction of humans since no one will exist to experience said harm. Who will care that humanity is ending if no one is around to care?
    - On the point directly above: Just because an outcome may be unwanted doesn't mean that the arguments are wrong. Even if you believe extinction is inherently bad, this does not justify the undeniable truth that reproduction violates the child’s consent to being born. This is an appeal to consequences, a logical fallacy!
    - Just because procreation is natural & societally accepted doesn’t mean it’s morally good. Diseases, natural disasters, & famine are all natural too, but that doesn’t mean they’re good. This is an appeal to nature, a logical fallacy! Slavery has been around for over 13,000 years. That doesn’t make it moral or ethical.
    - None of the nonexistent can wish to be born, but plenty of the living wish they had never existed.

It's your own decision, therefore your own responsability, nobody else's. When you have a child because you really want it, then you are going to show him love and give him the attention he needs, whereas when you have a child only because of social pressure then that child is going to grow up with lack of love, lack of attention, possible mistreatment and you will regret it.

@ K Caterina Not priesthood or religious life, just a chaste single life. I think the consecrated life crosses everyone's mind at least occasionally, but the possibility of the nonreligious single life gets omitted or ignored when folks discern their path. Like all other options, it's got its plusses and minuses, and I think that's why introspection and reflection are so important: so we can be a sure a possible that we've discerned rightly.
How about you? Where's your discernment led you? Was yours a straight path, or a winding one, or are you still on it?

My own path is still winding--a couple years ago I fell in love and considered married life for the first time but it never quite felt right (at least in terms of the ability to live out my call to communion with God; there were a few issues in that relationship). Right now I'm exploring the possibility of consecrated religious life (attending a vocation discernment retreat this weekend) and want to focus on discerning a yes/no there before re-discerning about the call to married life. Sort of take discerning vocations one at a time, as they tend to advise.

I've passed by this in the suggested videos section because I'm past the age of having kids. I'm a grandmother...and I probably won't be having the joy of welcoming more grandchildren until my grandchildren begin having their children. But being at this stage, I can vouch that you're right on the mark with this. And also, as a teacher (working as a guest, or substitute, or supply teacher in a different assignment every day), the most difficult jobs involve classrooms with higher numbers of solo children, even from the "best" homes. Granted, some kids from larger families get lost in the crowd, and we see the impact in the classroom behaviors, but that's usually because of environments where certain children are favored over others, or all the children are neglected (leaving one or two older children in charge). Overall, children with siblings and parents who are involved (but not helicoptering) learn how to interact with other kids, how to wait their turn, how to solve conflicts, and even how to learn and try new things.

My mum wanted to have 4, but she started late out of fear of not being able to handle parenting and motherhood. She had 2 and was able to devote more time and energy into us.
If a couple is able to raise a swathe of children, they should feel comfortable to do so. But there are some people who have lots of children for the wrong motives (e.g. here in my Aus hometown, I know of at least one family who has at least 2 generations producing children just for the government benefits so they don’t have to work and neglect their children).

I think you're a really deep thinker🖒 and bring up good points about hwo experience shapes our parenting. And how when our role as learner stops it's time to begin our role of teaching. And it's true that it sucks when you want to do your own thing at times but don't want to reject your child. However, there are still so many cultures, languages, religions, perspectives, environments, skills, games, sensations to learn that you don't neccesary have to stop your role as a learner. And experience shapes our parenting but it also shapes our friendships, love life, and respect. Also having a lot of kids lets kids entertain each other but their still needs to be guidance because most kids learn their social skills through each other and since we're born selfish like you said they can be unfair in their games.

Wanna know something? You won't like this, but not everyone is fit to have kids. There are people out there who are struggling financially. There are people with physical and mental health conditions. There are people who are infertile. And there are people who have a job that takes their time and life. And there are people who can't stand children and aren't good at raising them. So those people should not ever be having children. It'll just be asking for a terrible and messy life for both child and parent.
Poverty and child abuse are linked to cases like this. This is why it's so dangerous to pressurise people to have kids.
Lost of kids? Freaking hell, give me a break! That's a terrible idea. That would happen to cost you a lot and damage the house and your time. And the worst thing is to make your older kids be the second parent to the younger kids. You know that older kids have an education and a life of their own? They aren't your babysitters or slaves. You chose to have heaps of kids. You are the one that raises them all. It's selfish and entitled to push that on the older kids and rid them of their education and teenagehood.
Having kids is not for everyone. And many shouldn't be having kids int the first place. It's not something that just happens. It's something to really think about and be responsible with.
These little enjoyable experiences you share with your kids are poor reasons to have kids because it's more than that. It's not always sunshine and lollipops. It costs money, your time, and all of your discipline to insure that their wellbeing is secure and they will grow to become healthy and decent humans. Then there's the screaming, crying, mess and fights that many people aren't stable enough to handle. Those who can't do all those things can't be parents because that's just asking for trouble and a terrible spoiled human being.
Besides, there is more to life than kids. We all have different experiences and different fun times and joys in our lives. Whether it be traveling, spending time with family and friends, succeeding jobs, helping those in need or learning new things.

So the cure to selfishness is to create a person LIKE YOU (without their permission) so that YOU can re-experience life? Don't tell me, let me guess, you want them to take care of you when you are old too right? In other words, you created people to parasite off of when you get older and will probably tell them they are being immoral if they don't want to do that. After all, they aren't DIFFERENT people, but people YOU created so that YOU can re-experience life. How very "unselfish" of you!

Money is simply a reflection of scarcity. Scarcity is perpetually abated by competitive forces of market operations, which thereafter unveils new sources of scarcity. This is why career's as a stagnant pursuit is a shallow, and RISKY life pursuit. The things that are timeless are what should be most heavily invested in.
Family, spirituality, values, body, mind, philosophy, knowledge, experiences, culture etc. are all TIMELESS investments by which to orient one's time towards. Career and capital accumulation are good, but I am saying, that due to their volatile nature, should not be a route by which one finds EXISTENTIAL, life long satisfaction. The initial statement implies that life's greatest state of nirvana is achieved via career prospects. That is a very naive view of markets and financial value. Careers come into and out of existence all the time, and with them, the necessity to learn, unlearn, relearn and accumulate new forms of human capital. This perpetual chameleon nature of the workforce pales in comparison to the static, unchanging, time-tested value of family, spirit, etc. Build on a rock, not sand homie.

Therefore, we've decided to abstain which in marriage is called continence. We know how to use NFP, but I am too afraid to even leave a possibility of adding to our family. I am 36 now as well. Having a healthy child doesn't seem possible, and our sons take up all our monetary & time resources. Do you think this immoral of me to prevent God even the possibility (NFP) of giving us more children? Or is it ok to admit we feel we're at our financial limit as long as we have given intimacy up?
