      That’s a perfect analogy for why Origins is honestly my personal favourite Arkham game. I loved the deep detective work, that’s one of my favourite aspects of Batman that’s been neglected over the years. I hope WB Montreal’s new Batman game focuses heavily on detective work.

    The one thing I wish was in Knight, was the asylum. In specific I mean like at the end when you are taken to the asylum, I wish instead you tracked scarecrow there, and you got to explore it for the last time. Also to see how the place changed, just a big nostalgic send off.

    • @stefan_pet5531

      I never thought of that but that could have been cool instead of scarecrow getting you there and you fight againts the joker in your head and you start to see things like when the truck chrashes and you get out and your in crime alley and your fighting jokers like you should have been able to play in the asylum but idk man it would have been cool but the asylum is like destroyed cause of the plants and that nobody takes care of the place and yeah i think it would be awsome walking through the main hall but idk.

    • @stepkickking9868

      That could’ve been great. As you walked through the Asylum, Batman could’ve had flashbacks to each Arkham game, starting with Origins and working up to Knight. It would’ve been a great way to recap the whole franchise.

    I think you hit the nail on the head. Asylum feels more focused and feels like it has a better sense of direction. A lot of it felt like the creators were asking themselves "how can we make this aspect of the mythos playable?" while in the other games the kind of felt like they did it the other way around. The Riddler challenges were probably the best example of this. I have no idea how they went from riddles and secret documents to race tracks.

    • @RainCloudVideos
      @RainCloudVideos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I love knight but you perfectly articulated something inherently wrong with the game, the loss of groundedness. Asylum while being wacky and having comic book villains, still felt realistic in the sense that the world was designed first and the game had to work with that world. Arkham knight feels like they made a game first and attached the world to it. Why does the Arkham knight use thousands of unmanned drone when if he straps a kitten to one Batman’s entire plan would be thwarted? Why does the riddler build million dollar underground race tracks as a test of intelligence? Why is every random problem solved by the bat mobile? Because they made the game about the bat tank first and then built the world around it, making it feel so much more gamey.

    To an extent, I guess you could say this game did Killer Croc and Scarecrow the best. I absolutely love Scarecrow in Knight, but those fear sections are still some of the best gameplay I've ever experienced. And Killer Croc didn't really have much competition. I haven't played his Knight DLC, but I think I've seen enough of it to know it was a far cry from his lair in Asylum. Having to slowly walk through this maze while a giant mutant crocodile could jump out an eat you at any second was terrifying and awesome.

    • @VegetaLF7
      @VegetaLF7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Croc in Knight is a joke. You get the jump on him (really? REALLY? After all the talk Croc makes about having your scent?) and fight a bunch of random goons while you and Robin beat on Croc a few times, it was a real let down. Knight is an amazing game and super fun to play, but it lacks in several major areas: the oft-mentioned Bat-tank reliance and the lack of any boss battles of *any* significance. The only one worth a damn was the showdown with the Knight himself in the base because it was at least a proper Predator encounter rather than the tank crap again.

I was a Batman newbie when I first played this game, I basically only knew what was in the Batman live action movies (Burton and Schumacher) so getting into this for the first time really opened my eyes to the complexity that is Batman and his rogues gallery and it has really made me love Batman as a whole. I'm actually working my way through BTAS for the first time right now, with a slew of the animated movies lined up after that and if I ever stop spending so much money on video games collectors editions, I do want to get into the comics at some point as well. It's seems pretty overshadowed by it's successor and/or successors when I don't know if I ever felt more terror or suspense or edge of my seat thrill with any of the other games' stories like I did with this one. Arkham Asylum had the best little details. Be it the architecture, the easters eggs, the references, the character bios and more. It those details that truly make a game in my opinion.
    It was also the only game where the Batfamily not being involved actually made narrative sense if Joker or Harly suspected that Knightwing or Robin had gotten involved then he would have killed Sharp and his other hostages rather than just use them as bait. Whereas the other games made no sense as despite what Batman says things would have gone much better if they had been involved.
    The third and final thing that it did best was the villains, they genuinely felt powerful and dangerous and that Batman needed a plan in order to beat them, or in Killer Crocs case he knew he couldn't win that fight so the best he could do is plant a trap and hope for the best. You also have Bane smashing through walls, Ivy taking over the whole Island, Joker and his crew killing almost all the guards and staff and scarecrow giving you nightmares.

  • @VegetaLF7
    @VegetaLF7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Asylum and City are that perfect one-two combo. You see how Joker had clearly spent a lot of time planning out the Asylum takeover, even if his actual plan in the game didn't amount to much, and the self injection of Titan was massively out of character, but I digress. He obviously had come up with something massive and Batman put a stop to it, resulting in Joker's desperation play of that Titan injection which wound up backfiring on him with his poisoned state in City. Even in Knight, with Batman having the Joker hallucinations and slowly becoming a new Joker, it all traces back to that one night in Asylum, to the events in this one game.

    • @odhranmckillen6889
      @odhranmckillen6889 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it wasn't out of character for the Joker injecting himself with Titan because it makes a lot of sense for him to do that.
      The Joker took time and planning to make his goal come true, to take over the Asylum.
      When the Joker realized it was falling a part, his last scheme was to make Batman turn into a titan monster because he knew that Batman will jump in front of Gordon to save him. That last scheme failed shocking to the Joker when Batman was able to resist the change.
      The Joker was stunned, so stunned he came up with one last idea to finally put a end to Batman and finally achieve his goal and that was to inject himself with the titan and turn into that Jokerized monster.
      It all makes sense to me because Joker wants Batman to see the madness and Joker will do anything to show him and that's why he injected the titan and turned into that monster because he's insane enough to do that.

    • @VegetaLF7
      @VegetaLF7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Being in not only an insane asylum, but Arkham of all places, really added to that. There have been plenty of "the inmates are running the asylum" stories out there, but it's always special when it's Arkham since you have the super villains thrown in the mix as well. Like Jay says, in the other games Batman never feels trapped. He's just starting out in Origins, he can easily escape Arkham City (only really staying to investigate what the hell is going on) and in Knight he's hunting down Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight's forces. But Asylum? More than any other game in the series, you have that sense of being trapped with all the crazies running around. Which makes it all the more fun to turn those situations around in a "I'm not trapped in here with you, you're trapped in here with me!" kind of way.

Excited to see what the next couple will be, personally I think City showed the relationships between the villains/gangs the best, you see how joker’s gang and penguin’s gang really hate each other, but you also see a overlap and connection between the individual thugs themselves with the random conversation that have and the way they talk about the other gangs and the members.

    I have to say Riddler stuff in Asylum is my least favorite
    My favorites are City and Knight
    The riddles to get the trophies are very fun and you explore places you may not visit other wise
    Also City has the actual levels, Origins the towers and Knight has the Selina stuff which is so cool
    In Asylum you can take any of the trophies without much afford
    And the pay off isn't that great
    Of course the dialogue at the is awesome but in City and Knight you actually capture him

    • @KeithRK
      @KeithRK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      One of the issues with the Asylum Riddler stuff, is there isn't an in-story reason for Batman to waste his time with the Riddler. There is a game play reason, gaining experience points for upgrades. But in-story, there are no consequences if Batman ignores them, so why would be bother with them? He's more concerned with stopping Joker, not playing at Riddler's game.

    For me, ArkAsyl concentrates the triumph over fear best out of all the games: you're in a pretty stereotypical autumn Halloween haunted house setting, filled with monsters of various sorts. But you're the Batman, and the ones who aren't scared of _you_ yet will learn better. But sometimes the oppressive lonely atmosphere is just a challenge to continue on into (possibly topped by those moments you get into the screaming madmen area.)

    One thing I think Arkham Asylum needs a good bit of credit for is that it really showed people just how formidable of a foe Scarecrow can be. It armed the very concept of his fear toxin to the teeth, as well as showing it can be used for intense psychological terror rather than spiders and snakes. Scarecrow is an amazing villain, probably my favorite in fiction (next to Bane since honestly it's now a little bit difficult for me to pick one over the other), and I think that Arkham Asylum was one of the very first adaptations of the character other than TNBA to really do him a lot of justice

    I think you're absolutely on point with these specific parts of the game that you've selected. I've watched walkthroughs of all four games, and the points you selected really do stand out better in Asylum than they do in the others. That, for me, actually validates my opinion when I say that, when comparing which of the four games had the best of which components, Arkham Asylum was the one that set the standard for the rest of the franchise. As for the other three, Arkham City had the best Story, Arkham Origins had the best Boss Fights, and Arkham Knight had the best Combat Mechanics.

  • @RainePhoenix

    One thing this game did better than every other game in history, not just it's series, was its sewer level was an absolute highlight of the game. The Killer Croc "boss battle" was and remains one of the best of the series and no one seems to mention or reference it. True, you don't exchange blows, batarang him in the face as he charges you to make him slam into a wall so you can ride him and steer him into other bad guys and all that, and it's really not a fight per se, but the element of danger, dread, isolation urgency and foreboding are unrivaled. He only has to catch you once and you lose. He can come at you from anywhere at any time and you have to be on your toes to make sure you can fire a batarang at his collar in time before he gets you and you have very little time to react. Plus the music and sound design really enhance the battle. Playing this with a good system really immerses you in that place and hearing Croc's voice coming at you from all around you, never knowing just where he is when he taunts you is legitimately creepy.
    One more thing I thing this game does better than the rest is it knows less is more. The Killer Croc sewer level occurs only once, lasts for a good 10-15 minutes, then it's over. The Scarecrow hallucinations only happen 3 times, becoming darker, deeper experiences with each one, but then it's over. The Riddler challenges are fair and don't overstay their welcome, etc. The rest of the series tends to go overboard at times. Arkham City less so, but Origins over does it with Nygma challenges, maps (what I mean is the overworld if you will, is massive, but there are so few locations accessible to you to enter and explore, leaving it feeling vast, but dead), straight up combat rather than well - thought-out predator missions, and so on. Knight really over does it with tank battles, DLC campaigns that waste your time rather than offering a fulfilling experience (unlike Cold Cold Heart and Harley Quinn's Revenge, which give you at least an hour of story to play through), Riddler challenges (many of which, I found to be excruciating chores at best, and buggy messes at worse, namely the ones requiring you to uncover and follow the question marks with the Batmlbile, which for me, never worked right and I had to start over way too often), and too many militia drones, checkpoints and the like to have to take out. Arkham Asylum, while being far more linear than the rest, never felt like the story was being sacrificed for more, more, more, and it felt like it could have taken place in just one night, and while it had less, it said much more and always leaves you hungry for more.

    Arkham Asylum is sill my favorite Batman/DC game and still my favorite of the Arkham franchise. And you hit the nail here, especially with number one with the story. Paul Dini's my favorite writer for Batman stories and this really did feel like a spin off or mature take on the DCAU Batman aka Batman The Animated Series, it's own thing, or just a solo game that you can play without playing the sequels. The best story of the franchise was here imo. Great video overall, Degenerate Jay!

    5 best Arkham Asylum things: 5. Best use of Mark Hamill's Joker 4. Arleen Sorkin's swan song. 3. having to use your wits when trapped such as in the Patient Transfer Loop 2. Best post Animated Series Batman game. 1. Best use of Poison Ivy. I hated how in City she's only a cameo and mini boss. I really hated her dying in Knight. They could've done something else but no she has to die. Her boss fight's one of the best of the franchise. 5 best Arkham City things: 5. Best use of other characters like Solomon Grundy, Clayface 1, and Prof Hugo Strange. 4. Best Riddler use as I can usually complete it, CatWoman helping collect trophies is cool. 3. The best catastrophe you have to end, Protocol 10. I preferred this situation of trying to stop mass executions of prisoners over Scarecrow's fear cloud attack. 2. The Grappling Gun, cool once you upgrade it. 1. The atmosphere, stuck in a prison where it seems like Hell itself. 5 best Arkham Origins things: 5. Best Bat Suit, it looks like actual armor. 4. best array of gadgets like the Remote Claw, Glue Grenade,and Electrocutioner's gloves. 3. Best Joker plot, to use assassins to kill Batman then seize Gotham City. 2. Great array of assassins to fight like Deathstroke. 1. Best use and design of Bane. He looks great here as opposed to the previous games. 5 best Arkham Knight things: 5. The idea of his rogues uniting against him, maybe a nod to rival Spider Man who did this first in his comic book's first Annual back in 1964. 4. pretty decent design of Scarecrow for maximum effect. 3. The Batmobile, regardless of overuse, we never got to use it prior to now. 2. The dramatic death of Poison Ivy. I hated seeing her die but it was a good dramatic death, maybe like what Paul Dini would've written for her. 1. Two Face side mission. I know some hated it but it was one of my favorites of the franchise. Just so many ways you can beat him and his guys. I've twice used a take down from a gargoyle to beat Two Face.Please have a nice day folks.

    I think Arkham Asylum was the best we got of Joker. The whole game you can tell that he's just having the time of his life. He was outright hilarious when trying to be funny, and he was at his absolute scariest here too when he would threaten his henchmen that if they don't get the Batman, he's going to have to have their family members maimed. He was great in Arkham City, but you could definitely tell they used all their a-tier writing for Asylum. By the time Origins and Knight rolled around, it didn't matter if Joker was good or not because he was hogging the spotlight in those games to their detriment.

    also best boss fights, my favorite 2 are scarecrow and killer croc, because it's a boss fight that you don't fight, scare-cow has the atmosphere of fear and try not to be seen, and think when it's the time to move, and croc has the tense that you have to stay quiet and notice things like the shakey platform or the music. Not just punching

    I agree with the part about riddler missions. The problem with the other games is you have the riddler side mission on top of all the other side missions that take less time so it’s just disproportionate to begin with and on top of that it gets very repetitive going place to place to collect the trophies and all the other collectibles. Would prefer if in city where they had hostage missions and you just do 3-5 of those then you find and takedown riddler and leave the trophies out altogether
