Fixing the Salvaged Swamp Tractor and running it on Recycled Cooking Oil instead of Diesel

- I rescued this Abandoned International B414 Tractor a few weeks ago. It had been left beside a swamp for 20+ years so is very rusty, the rims are nearly at the point of collapsing.
A local farmer saw the video and told me about a non-running B250 with compatible rims, so I can make one good tractor out of the two.
I was curious to see if it will run on used cooking oil so set up a second fuel tank and plumbed it to the fuel system...

You don't know the Kiwi cocky. They will be waiting to be resupplied with Number 8 wire and baling twine then will proceed to fix the broken part and get the machinery running again. 👍
Seems like Marty could make a business out of this. Fix up old machines and resell them.
1960's my old man had a garage in the Bay of Plenty, He used to take the old oil out of oil changes and put it into a 44 gallon drum which was lifted up high on a shelf then a piece of old hemp rope was put in the drum then laid down a piece of guttering, metal back then, into another drum. Over time , the oil would "wick" up the rope and end in the lower drum without the crap. It took some time , but the family run our cars on that for years

Another good episode. That vege oil is trash in the injector pump. The engine begins to smoke more and more until you feel sick being around the exhaust. Not a good idea in fact. You might already know the oil polymerises (?) Turning into a pasticised rubbery film which builds up into a thick impervious varnish, not that it is matters.

this is quite moving to me , my old dad worked at IH in Yorkshire building tractors when I was a kid. It is highly likely he helped build this one . Miss you dad X
I've got a old mate that runs diesel/veggie oil mix in his old tractor. Has run for years with no problems. He pours the oil in the diesel tank and just mixes them in the tank. Every few months he runs a tank of just diesel through to keep anything from gumming up. Tractor has run for probably 20 years like that and has only needed usual maintenance

@@MartyT a couple of years back in Romania people found out about veggie oil that it could be used in diesel cars and they started buying it by the pallet. This becaise 1 liter of veggie was about 4 times cheaper than diesel. This quickly became a problem as the stores started running out of oil:). Then they put restrictions on the number of bottles that one costumer could buy. :D It smelled like french fries and the cars never had issues, thought i think they used to mix 1/3 diesel and 2/3 oil.

Marty: there is something so very satisfying watching You resurrect some of these old derelict and misused tractors. By applying some basic mechanical knowledge with a little tender loving care and a few replacement parts you manage to bring them back to a useful service life once again. It goes to show how very well engineered and crafted that these mechanical marvels were to be able to survive such a lack of care and maintenance. Thanks for the most enjoyable video. That old tractor again serving a purpose is the best green strategy of all. Running it largely on used veggie oil, is such a bonus. Congratulations man! :D
I used to have a B414. Think it was a 1962? I just loved that tractor. I used it to mow my pastures. That tractor did not even know the mower was behind it. just purred all day long. It is rare to see somebody actually go through a complete maintenance service like you did on this tractor. Good to see. Those engines just sound so good.
I know next to nothing about engines, but there’s something about old tractors that I find really interesting, plus I love to see old things brought back to life. 👍👍

I've worked on old equipment my whole life and love to watch them come back to life. Very satisfying.
Can't believe you pulled an International B414 out of that underbrush! I drove one of these for my uncle for several summers in the '70s when he grew hand-picked tomatoes for Heinz, in Ontario, Canada. We pulled a flatrack wagon behind it and loaded tomato baskets on it. We also used it for tons of other tasks. It's a great all-purpose utility tractor for farming and the IH engine/drivetrain is bulletproof, as you have wonderfully demonstrated. Thanks for posting this! Really enjoyed it.
Hey Marty greatly useful couple videos for me. I'm 80 now and not physically up to this kinda work but I live up in the mountains above the Snow line. I have a 1968 IH modle 444. Your procedures were exactly the same machine as mine. Mine spent it's life in the orchards up here in NE Washington state. It is a pretty good old tractor that needs a lot of minor tweaks. But 3 years ago the injector pump quit. Searched endlessly for a rebuilt or new one. The one company that had been making them for $450 bucks ( no core exchange) went out of business. A great guy in the UK with a TH-cam channel called Bundy's garage did a step by step walk through rebuilding the pump I have.( A CAV typ).I've been a skilled mechanic for 60 years so I ordered 2 complete rebuild kits. I was confident I could handle it but a couple years in and out of hospitals my sight sucks and hands are feeble. So no confidence with all those tiney parts. I just wish I could find a ready to go to just install. They built so many of those BDs I thought surely I could find one. I did the entire purge n flush of the hydraulics like you with no info. Ran my Nissan Atlas 150 truck on vegi oil for a while. Smelt like burnt cheese but went great , had a little more torque , held the revs longer going up hills.The trick is to get the vegi oil real hot so it thins out and atomizes better .I ran the oil through copper tubing wound around the engine oil filter before going into the pump.
All the abandoned tractors in NZ have heard about Martys love and attention and are slowly making their way to him,another entertaining video Marty.

They are aren't they? My brother's neighbor, his pup was lost one day. Everyone had pitched in, couldn't find the pup, mind you this is a farm land area with some peppered woods in between. Eventually the local police called, the pup had chased a lady's car all the way back to her home. Reason? Her kid had put one of those pole tennis balls on her bumper. No thoughts, only ball. :))

Such satisfaction bringing a decades old piece of machinery back to life with a little love and a few parts! My dad was a machinist for I-H here in the states in the 50's & 60's...he learned the trade during WW-ll with the Navy...He loved working on small engines, tractors was his favorite! He taught me well along the way to "respect and appreciate everything and everybody...Watching you so lovingly work on you new found I-H reminds me of dad...I love the smell of diesel, oil and hydraulic fluid...I really enjoy your channel Marty and thanks for refreshing my memories 💖

Hi Marty,
Did you know Rudolph Diesel invented his engine to run on peanut oil or any hydrocarbon! The fuel companies had waste from petrol production, and the rest is history, so you are going back to the roots of the diesel engine! I have been making "BioDiesel" for over 20 years, which is made from used /new veggie oil , BUT is very different to straight veggie oil. SVO will /can gum up pumps /filters due to the glycerine , but properly made BioDiesel removes the glycerine and makes the fuel suitable for ANY modern engine. I've been running my Disco Td5 on my fuel for over 15yrs and have never had an issue, but it would not like SVO as it's too think and the glycerine will cause issues. Also , the veggie oil will destroy any rubber hoses , so take a spare! Properly made Biodiesel will /does improve engine torque , and has far more lubricity than diesel, so it's better fro injectors /pumps BUT IT must be made to standard!
Older engines with mechanical injection are fine on SVO , so you'll have no problems , especially flushing it with diesel!

I was surprised to see how little residue there was in the centrifuge. Your friend must change his cooking oil very frequently. All food shops should be like your friend's.
He stored it in containers for a few months, most of the gunk had settled in the bottom.
We had an old international on our farm. It was an old tractor 30 years ago, but never gave us any trouble. An absolute work horse. Our neighbour ended up buying it and is still using it today! Great tractors.
Be careful you will gum up/cause corrosion in the pump if left in there. You should put a tap on the bleeder on the pump and recirculate it through the water jacket and back in to the inlet to heat the fuel. With a few extra taps you can plumb the return of diesel+veg back to the tank in flush mode. This way you can flush it out faster if you are interrupted. The timing advance is done by lift pump pressure acting on a piston that rotates the pump body. The increase in viscosity is probably affecting this and the spray pattern of the injectors.

@@4acrehome168 Totally agree. Hope Marty picks up on this. For road use I used 50/50 diesel and veg oil. It worked well. The trick is scrupliously clean veg oil. Glad Marty understands this. When I experimented I used new, unused veg oil to start with.

I understand the "gumming" part but corrosion? What in veggie oil is more corrosive than the crap diesel is made from? I had a mate who worked in the petrol chem industry and he told me diesel is made pretty much out of the crap that's left over after all the "good stuff" has been removed? Diesel/oil engines were originally designed to run on poor quality oil. While veggie oil has a lower viscosity I can't see it being a problem its still oil. Also he's running an old agricultural vehicle which has been stood for years. I cant see running veggie oil causing any problems? I'd love to see some actual scientific papers on this and some physical evidence to prove its a problem and not just Hearsay. Just my opinion. I ran my hilux on 1/3 -2/3 mix and it had topped 250,000 miles when I sold it with no problems....

That reverse gear whine at 31:16 was just right. Instantly took me back to our machine here. Good to see all that contaminated oil out of there and that the workings seem to have survived it.
The first tractor I remember on our farm had a two fuel system. It started on petrol, and switched to TVO (paraffin) when it had warmed up. I know it was a Massy Ferguson and would have been built in the 1950s or 60s so possibly a T20. Another story is from when I was an apprentice at Ford UK where one of the fitters showed me a trick squirting brake fluid into a carburetor which produced a wonderful vegetable oil smell. Vegetable oil was considered exotic because it was used by some racing two stroke engines at the time. I have a vivid memory of being passed by a Scott Flying Squirrel (about 1970) which left a beautiful smell of vegetable oil behind it.

I did a restoration on my old b414 and it was a dream! I used to drive it on the road about 8 miles and then field work it before driving it home again. A brilliant all round tractor. Watching this brings back memories!

marty, the 414 is idi injection and slow revving so good for cooking oil. but has a cav pump they don't like veg oil, if your going to run more veg oil don't forget to swap the diesel return over at the same time or your diesel will fill up with veg. running 30% dino in veg is a good idea but mix it very well in a can first. cooler temp's will give you problems with veg oil getting thick. run it hard and long time on veg and you will get good results, enjoy.
Watched a bunch of these and always come away amazed by how well made these vintage machines are.

You can add upto 5% petrol to your vege oil to thin, prevent it from gelling in winter and improve the cetane. Another interesting video Marty, cheers 👍

insulate and mount the veggie oil tank under the hood, exhaust side, and run the oil through a fuel preheat heat exchanger. the coolant with the engine warmed up should get the oil to just about the right viscosity to burn nicely. the engines I work on for a living run on bunker oil, and with the fuel preheated like that, they run pretty clean once warmed up.
It’s enjoyable watching you tinker with your projects/toys and repairing 90% of your problems. Anyone can just replace parts but it takes real skill and knowledge to figure problems out. Bushcraft ingenuity always wins👍

Good work. I just went down a rabbit hole a couple of days ago about Rudolf Diesel, the man who invented the diesel engine. He wanted to make the most efficient engine possible. The darn things can run on almost anything, with proper adjustments. We have a healthy market for used cooking oil to make "biodiesel", so it is not free here in the US, but could be gotten cheap if you contact local restaurants.
I think the reason I like your content is that you seem absolutely fearless in your approach to repairs and frankly in your approach to life as well.

You can preheat the veggie oil to, say, 50 degrees C, until the power output is comparable to pure diesel. And make a 3way valve for easy switching between fuels. Good job.
I ran my Peugeot 1.9 XUD (Bosch pump) on veggie oil for years. I had a two tank system to start and finish on diesel. It had a water/oil heat exchanger plumbed into the coolant circuit to get the oil hot and thin. It was less powerful but was dirt cheap and a bit of fun too. My advice on that tractor is to mix it in with your normal tank - more in summer and less in winter due to the viscosity.
DO NOT TRY THIS ON COMMON RAIL. It will ruin a modern high pressure injection system.
Same here, used to have 2 Peugeot 405 estates and a 306 all with the 1.9 XUD engine and they all ran on a 50/50 mix of veg oil and diesel, never had any problems even in the winter as long as you changed the glow plugs
I did run on engine oil on my Mitsubishi l200 2003 and it has common rail. You must use a blend of at least 50/50 with diesel/oil
Climate is exceptionally mild where Marty lives- never too cold, so Summer/Winter issue may not be too important, though for folk in colder areas it is a good tip

Great little experiment and congradualtions on getting the international tractor running.There is a gentleman out of Wales , ( Kriss Harbor) on u tube, who has been running vegetable oil on his tractor and Range Rover for a couple of years.I believe Kriss is very pleased with the results.The centerfuge idea really looks good to get rid of water& foreign particles.Great idea! It's good to see someone have a glow plug indicator work. I've put 3 in my Kubota and it keeps melting them before the plugs are hot.

Amazing! I love watching the how to's on refurbing old equipment. And the veggie oil experiment is very interesting. Oh, and when you dropped the wrench in the oil bucket, how many of us thought, yep been there done that. Great video look forward to more.

Always amazes me how much abuse these old machines can withstand and still keep on working.

I used to run cooking out without any problems however I made a copper fuel pipe for the cooking oil and wound it round the exhaust pipe to fully preheat the oil or cut out a section of radiator hose and put in its place a section of copper pipe and wind your copper fuel line around that, run on diesel to bring it up to temp then turn on a two way tap to change over. You will need he heat it up in winter. You could use one or both these ideas.

Another great MartyT video, thanks. Your use of diesel/engine oil spray took me back. The garage where I was apprenticed had a drum of old engine oil and (I think) paraffin kept near the grease-ramp. It was used to spray the undersides of cars (rear springs, gear linkage, etc.). When taxis came in for a check-over before their official roadworthiness check (this was before the days of MoT tests) they usually asked for it to be sprayed over the entire bottom of the car. Your skill to bring to life old iron is very impressive. To even know the steering box drain plug. I am sure you have a small pump the do the fiinal filtering of the veggie oil. As you guess a mix of diesel to keep any wax build up.
Here in America there this stuff called green slime. I use will great success in fixing leaks in tires.

Hi Marty. My mate ran his Mercedes on cooking oil and preheated the oil to 100 degrees before the filters. It ran almost as good as diesel and one only noticed a loss of power when towing the caravan, which was small. He had to put different filters on the fuel line, and I'm sure he made them from using the bodies of old filters. The car is not with us now some idot ran into the car total wreck.

Quite popular here in The States 🇺🇲 for old MB 240, 300 Diesels and the VW diesel crowd. I'm a retired Mercedes Star Technician (1970-1990) and BMW Master Tech(1990-2017)
Add a few oz's Marvel Mystery Oil to yer Vegi Fuel res. To lubricate the injection pump, injectors, provide proper lubrication to all the internals, help clean combustion chambers. It's just good stuff✌️✌️ 👌 idea about the tank near the warming exhaust. Prevent waxing, jelling, help flow when cold. Add a filter off the tank outlet to catch the fish & Chip crumbs🦈 🤣👌. It'll make your neighbors hungry🙃
