Karolyn these are just iced cakes right with buttercream icing? Someone want me to ship then 2 chocolate cakes. Do you freeze cakes first like layered cakes?
These are iced with a glaze that forms a crust. Since the crust forms, the plastic won't stick to it. I don't ship any cakes other than these because I'm not sure how they would hold up during transit. If you use a crusting buttercream, it may work. But, again, I never have done it so I'm not 100% sure!
I'd also love to know how you glaze it in different colors... I love that! Do u have a video on making the pound cake and glazing it like these cakes your showing?
So great!! This is clearly the best way to get my pound cakes to friends and relatives. Thank you ! I need to send to sister in AZ, cousin in ATL, and daughter in North Carolina. I'm thinking the glaze would need to be the more firm kind to not stick to the plastic. Otherwise, it might be good to pack some to add later. When you get a moment, I'm interested in your thoughts on this.
I make a basic glaze with melted butter, powdered sugar and flavoring. If you let it sit out (exposed to air) once it is glazed for about 40 min to an hour, it will form a light crust and won't stick to the plastic.
Hello Karolyn, I absolutely love all your videos. Questions: 1) What kind of icing are you using on the bundt cakes? 2) Should the customer refrigerate the cake once received? If the icing has melted. Thank you in advance.
I do a glaze, which is melted butter, powdered sugar, a little milk and flavoring. The butter helps it form a crust. I only ship these in April (Easter), November (Thanksgiving) and December (Christmas), so I haven't had issues with it melting because the weather is cool when I ship them. I'm not sure how it would hold up if it's shipped when it's really hot. If it does melt, they could refrigerate it completely wrapped for an hour or 2 so the glaze can stiffen up before it's unwrapped.
Hi! What size is the container that you’re using to fit perfectly in the large flat rate box. I’m finding 9 inch and 10-11 inch. Thanks for sharing this tutorial with us by the way.
Hmmm, I'm not too sure. I don't make cakes like that. However, there is a local bakery that makes an amazing gooey butter cake. I tried bringing it on a plane to California and even though I had it on me in my carry on, it still got messed up. Those cakes can be unstable and can get damaged easily. Pound cakes are dense and can withstand the shipping. So you may want to find a more secure way to wrap and pack them. I'd definitely wrap the cake up in the pan really good (like 4 times) and then you gotta find a good box for it and pack it so it won't shift. I hope that helps!
Repost Just in case you missed the reply. Thank you so much for responding. I'm a beginner and just want to understand how to extend freshness when shipping. Can you please explain what keeps a pound cake moist and fresh if it's thawed before shipped? and the customer receiving it 2-3 days later?
I personally feel like wrapping up and freezing the cake after it's baked while still warm really helps to keep the cake moist. I actually had a friend order a pound cake to be shipped to Colorado. It got lost in the mail and didn't get to her for 2 weeks after I shipped it and she said it was still delicious! It's pretty crazy, I wouldn't recommend that on the regular, but I know that they can last up to a week if they are properly prepared.
I should have mentioned that I use a crusting glaze (butter is in it). The butter / powdered sugar forms a crust and it won't mess up with light touch. I use 2 pounds of powdered sugar, 1 stick melted salted butter, flavoring and liquid like water or milk to get it to the desired consistency. Pour it over the cake and let it sit out about 20-30 minutes so it can crust.
@Karolyns Kakes Thank you! Yes, it should be okay! I ship my bundt cakes once they have thawed so they are at room temp when I ship them. Just wrap it up like I show in the video and it will be really secure!

Also, I use powered sugar and buttermilk to make my glaze. How do you think that would hold up under wrapping and shipping? Thanks in advance for your help.
I always let the cakes completely thaw. I don't like to glaze frozen cakes because when they thaw, condensation may form and there could be an issue with the glaze. Just my personal opinion!

Oh thank you so much Karolyn! I am so enjoying watching your videos. You are such a blessing. Okay so I'm going to try my first one this week. THANK you THANK you THANK you I can't THANK YOU enough for all that you do in the cake world/ Bakeworld 😂😂💖
I never ship decorated cakes, just bundt cakes like I show in this video. So I'm not too sure what to recommend for that. I would assume it should be refrigerated and maybe have dry ice in the box as well to help keep the icing solid. But I'd look into it further to be sure!
@@KarolynsKakes Thank you! You're welcome honey! I have only shipped my cupcake tester boxes (the cupcakes are plain and don't have icing on them.) So I can wrap the cupcake box like I did with the pound cake in this video. If the cupcakes have icing and decorations, I'm not sure how to wrap them up without damaging them, so I have never shipped those. Sorry I couldn't help with that!
Hi Karolyn, thank you for all the helpful and clear cake decorating information. I want to mail cupcakes, but I am worried about the plastic wrap squishing the cupcakes in the cupcake container. How do you avoid this? Should I freeze the iced cupcakes then wrap and ship? I appreciate your help in answering this question :-).
Hmmm, I never shipped cupcakes. But you're right, the plastic could mess them up. It may be better to put them in individual containers and wrap each one up? I'm not sure though. Look into different packaging. I'm sorry I couldn't really help on this one!
I feel like freezing cakes while warm makes them more moist. It traps the steam so the cake won’t dry out as fast. Sometimes I won’t freeze pound cakes if I’m making them for next day consumption. I found that my pound cakes stay fresh longer if I freeze them. I had one for Thanksgiving that was still good a week after I made it!
I always print my labels online at USPS.com and don't recall them asking what the contents of the box are. So, no, I haven't had to pay any extra for shipping. :) The only cakes I ship are my pound cakes. And those aren't perishable. There isn't anything in there that would spoil if not refrigerated or frozen. I'm not sure what to recommend if you are shipping a cake that has perishable ingredients (Whipped cream, fresh fruit, custard, etc.). I'm sure there are precautions that must be taken.
The glaze I use forms a crust. (Powdered sugar, melted butter, milk and flavoring) I glaze the cake then let it sit out for about an hour so it can crust before I wrap it up.
@@KarolynsKakes I live in North Carolina and a lady in Las Vegas wants me to ship her a pound cake. Do you think I should freeze it first before shipping it to her?
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I want to send some bundt cakes out to friends this holiday, this was the perfect tutorial. I have a quick question - does the glaze melt during delivery or come off with the plastic wrap when the people who receive them unwrap it? I'm wondering whether I should leave the glaze off entirely? Thank you so much Karolyn!
I use butter in my glazes. The butter makes the glaze form a crust. So I glaze my cakes and then let them sit exposed to air for 30 -60 minutes so the glaze can crust and harden a little bit before I wrap them up. I actually don't ship cakes in the really warm months because the glaze could melt and become a huge mess. For that reason, I never had anyone complain about the plastic wrap sticking. If you're really hesitant, you could wrap it without the glaze and put it in a separate container.
It's a basic glaze...1 stick melted butter added to 2 pounds of powdered sugar. Add whatever flavoring you want and whole milk to get it to the desired consistency. ☺
Hey Karolyn. It's me again. LOL. Thank you so much for your immediate responses. I really appreciate it so much. Ok follow-up questions. :) Do you use simple sugar on your bundt cakes at all? If so, do you use it before or after you freeze. AND How long should I freeze the bundt cake? I put it in the freezer at 6pm yesterday. I need to ship it but want to make sure that I allow enough freeze time. Also, was it ok to freeze it on the cardboard bottom?
I don't use simple sugar on my pound cakes (the only cakes I make in a bundt pan). I just don't think it's necessary because they are dense. If you want to do it, I would after you thaw and before you glaze (if you're going to put glaze on there.) I've frozen bundt cakes for a week with no issues. They can even be frozen longer, up to 2 or 3 months if wrapped really well! You can freeze it on a cardboard, I do it all the time. Hope that helps!
Hello, I love the video. I have a question, Do you freeze you cakes before shipping? I looked up the links to the products you use and they are expensive, so you incorporate you're supplies into your pricing of your cake, and do you customers pay for their own shipping, and do you only use USPS?
The cost of supplies is insane now! Yes, I factor that into the pricing. I freeze my cakes, but thaw them (wrapped in plastic at room temp) before I put the glaze on. Then I let it sit exposed to air for about 90 minutes so the glaze can crust. After that, I wrap it up like I showed in the video. The customers pay for shipping (and I add a handling fee because boxing them up takes time!). I only use USPS for now because they have the flat rate boxes. I hope that helps!
Thank you! I don't need ice packs as there are no perishable ingredients in the pound cakes that I ship. I'm not sure if ice packs will work because they could melt. You may want to research dry ice if you need to keep something cold.
I've never made one of those, but I would do something similar if you can find a container that has a lid that would snap to the base. (I believe there are ones with shorter dome lids than the one I used in this.) If you can't find one, I'd get a cake drum and put the cookie cake on there and plastic wrap it to the board many times to make sure it doesn't shift. Also secure it to the board with icing.
You can go to USPS.com to calculate a shipping price. I use the flat rate shipping boxes. To ship a whole pound cake like I did in this video, I use the large flat rate box. It's $24.75. To ship a half pound cake, I use the medium box. That is $18.40. I also add a handling fee because it takes a lot of time to print the labels, pack up the cakes, ship them, etc. I don't ship them frozen.
Do you ship to Arizona over the summer? Do they melt? Especially the icing on the cake I’m from Texas and would love to ship out of state will the glaze melt? Or will the glaze be fine on the side?
I haven't shipped my pound cakes in the Summer yet for that reason. There is butter in the glaze and it may not hold up against extreme heat. I have shipped to California in May and it was fine. You could do the glaze on the side, that's a good option!
Cream cheese icing shouldn't sit out too long, so I wouldn't recommend shipping it as you don't know how long it would take for it to get there and it may spoil.
I was able to get cake carrier's at the dollar store that I am going to use to ship bundt cakes to my kids. I will let you know how they work out. They are sturdier than the flexible plastic cake container.
@@KarolynsKakes thank you, talk about good timing I'm currently watching the Crown tutorial and I wanted to purchase the tylos but when I went to your site so to order it ofcourse directed me to Amazon but, the Tylos visually changed to a Wilton brand and I didn't see the word Tylos so haven't ordered it but, "I will now" as you said i this video I'm watching " The gold crown video" u mention used the Wilton brand and use that small Tylos container so now I no it's correct . Ordering tonight lol Thanks again.
Yup! It’s a crusting glaze because I use butter. Basically it’s 2 pounds powdered sugar, 4 oz. melted butter, flavoring and between 1/4-1/2c milk to get it to the desired consistency.
I just started shipping mini 6 inch bundt cakes (along with other baked goods). I did my first test shipment to my friend and the cake was destroyed. My aunt also got one but she said her cake survived. I didn’t use a dome container.. maybe that’s why. I used a treat box. I also shipped it uniced with the icing packaged separately. Do you believe I could continue to use a treat box or I should have to use a dome container?
Oh no!! That stinks, but at least you did a test shipment first! Did you wrap the open treat box with plastic wrap before you closed the lid? And then wrap the entire thing up again? That may help prevent the contents from shifting a lot!
Sometimes! I do have an order form on my website under the pound cake page that people fill out. I make the most pound kakes for Thanksgiving, and I also do Christmas and Easter.
It's a flat rate through USPS if you use the flat rate boxes. I also add a handling fee because it takes time to box it up, add the padding inserts, tape it, print the label, etc.
Oh no!! I only ship these bundt cakes because I can wrap them up really well like this and they arrive safely. I've been asked to ship my decorated cakes, but never will because I can't wrap them up this well and the risk of damage is too high!
I have shipped bundt cakes to my sister in California (from me in Philly) with no problems using this method. If it is a decorated cake, I am not sure what to recommend because I don't ship decorated cakes, just the bundt cakes.
@@Skalyon2 I know that, but she mentioned you can do the same for cupcakes and I want to try sending some orders by mail, but not if my icing look bad.
I forgot to mention, it will work with a crusting buttercream. What kind of buttercream do you use? If I were going to ship cupcakes, I would do more of a flat swirl instead of a high swirl. That way the icing is flatter against the cupcake and is less prone to getting messed up. I hope that makes sense!

Oh thank you so much Karolyn! I am so enjoying watching your videos. You are such a blessing. Okay so I'm going to try my first one this week. THANK you THANK you THANK you I can't THANK YOU enough for all that you do in the cake world/ Bakeworld 😂😂💖
Hi!! Would you please be so kind to tell me if I can ship a cake right after baking cooling and frosting?? Or do you refrigerate it first??
I never ship decorated cakes, just bundt cakes like I show in this video. So I'm not too sure what to recommend for that. I would assume it should be refrigerated and maybe have dry ice in the box as well to help keep the icing solid. But I'd look into it further to be sure!
@@KarolynsKakes Thank you! I guess I should have said a bundt cake. it is a bundt cake I will be sending, If I cool it, then put the glaze frosting on it let it set an hour, wrap it in plastic like you showed and place it in a plastic cake plate like you showed, and wrap that in plastic, can I ship it at that point? so the cake will be a lemon pound cake with glaze frosting.
Awesome video! Very informative. Thank you!
You're welcome LaBrea! Glad I could help!
Thku sis I absolutely needed this , I make Bundts and cupcakes and I wanna start shipping, do u have any tips for cupcake shipping
Thank you very much for this. Great help. 🤝
Glad it was helpful!
@@KarolynsKakes Thanks for taking time out to respond! 😀
Thanks you’re such a life saver ❤
Great tutorial!
Thank you Kevin!
Is the cake frozen? How is the icing not sticking to plastic?
The cake isn’t frozen. The glaze forms a crust on the outside so it doesn’t stick to the plastic.
Thank you for great instructions. Is there an advantage to freezing the pound cake first? Is there a reason you prefer not to freeze the cake first?
I feel like freezing cakes while warm makes them more moist. It traps the steam so the cake won’t dry out as fast. Sometimes I won’t freeze pound cakes if I’m making them for next day consumption. I found that my pound cakes stay fresh longer if I freeze them. I had one for Thanksgiving that was still good a week after I made it!
I freeze all my cakes. Keeps them moist
@@KarolynsKakes ... I'm confused..I thought you don't like to freeze to ship?
Thank You 😎
This was very informative 👍🏾
Awesome 👍😎
Thanks 😊😊
You're Welcome Nechele! 😊
Excellent! And this cake was made from a regular 9.5 inch bundt pan?
I use a 12 cup (10") bundt pan like this one: amzn.to/3SM2rH3
@@KarolynsKakes thank you!!!
When you mail cakes, the post office of course asks if you are mailing perishables, is this considered perishable? If so is it xtra to ship?
I always print my labels online at USPS.com and don't recall them asking what the contents of the box are. So, no, I haven't had to pay any extra for shipping. :)
The only cakes I ship are my pound cakes.
Thanks for sharing!!! Did you send it over night and how much was the cost?
I saw the answer below
How do you keep the plastic from removing the icing? How do you make sure it doesn't all come off?
The glaze I use forms a crust. (Powdered sugar, melted butter, milk and flavoring)
I glaze the cake then let it sit out for about an hour so it can crust before I wrap it up.
This was great info. Thank you. 🫶🏽
Glad it was helpful!
😳 OMG!!!! I’ve not shipped because I thought it was difficult. Dang!! You make everything simple. Question: do you ship your Bundt cakes frozen?
No, I thaw them and then glaze them. Then I let the glaze crust (about 1-2 hours) before I wrap it up and ship it.
@@KarolynsKakes I live in North Carolina and a lady in Las Vegas wants me to ship her a pound cake. Do you think I should freeze it first before shipping it to her?
Do you have a video for your glaze/icings?
I don't, I will film the next time I make some!
Oops nevermind, I saw some of the other comments that address this, thank you!
Love it! What type of icing is on your Bundt cake sampler?
It's a basic glaze...1 stick melted butter added to 2 pounds of powdered sugar. Add whatever flavoring you want and whole milk to get it to the desired consistency. ☺
@@KarolynsKakes .. Can you show us?
Hi I love his idea. Do you use any ice packs?
Thank you! I don't need ice packs as there are no perishable ingredients in the pound cakes that I ship. I'm not sure if ice packs will work because they could melt. You may want to research dry ice if you need to keep something cold.
Thank you so much for this video!
Hi there! Any suggestions on how to ship a decorated cookie cake??
I've never made one of those, but I would do something similar if you can find a container that has a lid that would snap to the base. (I believe there are ones with shorter dome lids than the one I used in this.) If you can't find one, I'd get a cake drum and put the cookie cake on there and plastic wrap it to the board many times to make sure it doesn't shift. Also secure it to the board with icing.
God bless you! Game changer!
Right?! It's the best! So glad I could help you. :)
Thanks for the information
How would you ship say 2 dozen cupcakes?
Hi, where do you get the "fragile" and "this end up" from?.
I just write it on the box!
How can I figure out pricing to ship a cake like this so I can tell the customer? Also did you freeze the cake before?
Do you ship it overnight
I never have, I ship via priority mail 1-3 days.
Do you add any dry ice or freeze the cake prior to shipping?
I don’t, but I don’t ship anything that requires refrigeration.
Would it be safe for me to ship a 3 layer cake with cream cheese icing the way you did your bundt cake? It’s coming from COLUMBUS Georgia to Kansas
Cream cheese icing shouldn't sit out too long, so I wouldn't recommend shipping it as you don't know how long it would take for it to get there and it may spoil.
Where do you buy the cake container you used here? I need these to ship a carrot cake.
I either get them at a local restaurant supply store or on Amazon. I put a link below in the description to them on Amazon!
I was able to get cake carrier's at the dollar store that I am going to use to ship bundt cakes to my kids. I will let you know how they work out. They are sturdier than the flexible plastic cake container.
@@kolleenwynn3842 Ooh thank you for sharing! I'm going to have to see if I can find them!
😱 thank you so much for this information 😁
Happy to help!
@@KarolynsKakes I have a question for you / advice. Is it best to freeze a cake before shipping?
My granddaughter is always wanting my red velvet ,but it's pricey to make and it get ruined in shipping.. Thank you
I hope this helps! I just shipped something the other day with this method and it arrived 100% safe!
What kind of Frosting do you put on your bundt cake? Is it just a glaze??
@@KarolynsKakes I did not, but I definitely will next time. I really like the treat boxes lol
So do you receive orders for your pound cakes online?
Sometimes! I do have an order form on my website under the pound cake page that people fill out. I make the most pound kakes for Thanksgiving, and I also do Christmas and Easter.
thank you for this tutorial
You're welcome! I'm glad it helped! 😊
Do i need to freeze my pound cake before shipping it?
I don’t, but you can if you’d like!
Is shipping expensive or is it 1 flat rate through USPS?
It's a flat rate through USPS if you use the flat rate boxes. I also add a handling fee because it takes time to box it up, add the padding inserts, tape it, print the label, etc.
I think you could ship a Decorated cake if it was frozen first
I get so scared to do it! Have you had success with it? I'd love to hear success stories and maybe I'll stop being such a wuss! haha
VERY helpful... Just shipped a Cake and it reached they person in SHAMBLES 😒.
Oh no!! I only ship these bundt cakes because I can wrap them up really well like this and they arrive safely. I've been asked to ship my decorated cakes, but never will because I can't wrap them up this well and the risk of damage is too high!
"The cake gods" I love that
They are real!! 😂🙌
Where do you get the plastic cake covers.
They are linked in the description near the top labeled as Disposable Plastic Cake Domes
I wanted to ship a small cake from nyc to California is that possible to do?
I have shipped bundt cakes to my sister in California (from me in Philly) with no problems using this method. If it is a decorated cake, I am not sure what to recommend because I don't ship decorated cakes, just the bundt cakes.
Karolyn, how long do you freeze it?
I freeze cakes just baked out of the oven overnight, so up to 24 hours. Is that what you were asking?
@@KarolynsKakes Yes, I wanted to know how long you froze that Bundt cake before you wrapped it.
How much are thise flat rate large boxes?
The boxes are free. Shipping is around $25.
The plastic wrap won’t mess up the buttercream on decorated cupcakes?
That looks like poured icing or glaze. If the cake is really good who care🤤🙂
@@KarolynsKakes I do use a crusting buttercream or the marshmallow buttercream so I’ll try it with the crusting one. Thanks for answering.
@@keyronaughtry you're welcome, let me know how it goes!
And where do you get your cake containers?
I linked them in the description below!
Do you ever freeze your cakes before shipping?
I've never done that.
No ice packs???
I don't use any perishable ingredients so it's not necessary for me to use them.
How long does the flat rate box take?
There are a few different zones, so I believe it's up to 3 business days depending on where you are located. You can look it up on USPS site.
