Here’s a tip as a professional pastry chef, when you prepare your pans use nonstick spray. Spray, paper, spray. It doesn’t seem like you are using a lot of extra butter but it adds up. Nonstick spray is cheaper. Also if you want to bring it up a step (if using fondant especially, decorate your cake boards)

Here in the UK, the first thing is to register with your local council. Next, get your paperwork in order for food hygiene (SFBB). Take a Level 2 Food Safety certificate - at very least. When you get your first inspection, you will be observed making cakes and your paperwork will be inspected. To accurately work out a selling price, you’ll need all the cost prices of ingredients, packaging, accessories, overheads and your wages. The EHO will also ask you about food allergens. It will take a few years to get established but stick with it. To make a living at this you’ll need to bake at least one cake a day at £40 each for 5/6 days a week or one wedding cake a week at £300. Happy Baking 🥰
Iv never been observed making cakes in any of my inspections and im also based in the Uk. It was just an inspection of my kitchen, a few questions about food hygiene and cleaning schedule, EHO also offered advice and that was it, very simple and straightfoward. I also did a food hygiene course prior to inspection. Been inspected twice and both awarded Very Good 5stars.
I love my cake leveler and love the fact that I invested in it because I tried many times to level a cake with a long serrated knife i bought and I never seem to cut it flat enough. So it definitely was/is a must for me but i agree with your other tips especially the molds and already shaped pans

Good for you for starting off on this venture! When I was first building up my portfolio I made A LOT of free cakes for friends and family. It gave me the opportunity to improve and try out things I’ve always wanted to do. As for what you can show your clients, I would be very honest about just starting out (and my prices would reflect this). I love all these only thing I disagree with is def the cake leveler because i tried doing it with just the knife and they would always be crooked and one layer would be thin and another too thick. Cake leveler makes it faster and even. I got a cheap one from Walmart and it works great. 😊

Technically you should use fondant within a year after opening it, but I’ve truly never seen fondant go bad. The texture might change and go a bit harder after a while, but just add a bit of shortening, knead it and you will be good to go!
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe Thank you so much!! I always end up throwing away my fondant a few weeks after opening it! So glad to know that it can be used for a longer time !!
Hi! I loved this video! I was wondering where you get the bigger piping tips? I ordered a set of what I though were on the bigger side piping tips but really, they were smaller :(. I’m just talking about the size of that grass tip you were using on that golf cake.
I bake and sell from home also.I have a question ,I was watching your video, and I noticed your cakes seem to have alot of holes in them ,can you explain why?
It depends which recipe I’m using. Whenever I use buttermilk with that recipe it creates those holes which make the cake really super light and airy. I notice when I use just regular milk I don’t get as many holes. :)
I’ve started a small business abs I need help with mani my menu boards and pricing boards. Where is the best most user friendly place I can do this at?
I’ve done cookies and they are very very time consuming at times so be sure that you aren’t under charging! Also, reach out to some wedding venues in your area and see if you can leave your cards for couples. Some people like custom cookies for wedding or other party favors.
I think the best place to start is to figure out what it is you’re passionate about selling. Come up with a product list and then start with selling to friends and family 🥰
I'm a disagree on the cake leveler. I have an Agbay Cake Leveler not one of those cheap wire ones. 😏 I can torte literally ten cake layers in a matter of seconds. But the information in this video is GOLD! I certainly will be sharing this with a few other home bakers that I know.
So im really just starting out (with cookies) and you saod to posy every day, but i dont bake everyday or have made enough different designs to do that????
It's okay to do repeats now and then OR whenever I did a batch of cookies, I would do a few extra that I would just decorate with the leftover icing with whatever I felt like decorating. Posting everyday is a great way to grow quickly, but don't feel like you always have to post product. You could post your baking supplies or other fun "behind the scenes" footage of your shop. Hope that helps! :)
Another bakery can always “do it for cheaper”, but nobody can decorate a cake exactly like your bakery and nobody can make a cake taste exactly Iike yours if you use a special recipe. Try not to get discouraged. Stick to your pricing and if your product is good quality you won’t be losing out! 🙂

I plan to try opening a business for solely cupcakes. Probably makes it a bit simpler since there's not quite as many things you need for cupcakes that you do for cakes.
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe Thanks so much! The thing is I'm not 100% sure if this is what I'll end up doing I still have so much time to figure out my career since I'm still only a teen, but this is what I'm aiming for. This video was really helpful for if I do. Thank you.
I love your tips but I alway use my cake leveller. I can’t do it by hand when I try to do it by hand it always goes wrong. So I would recommend a cake leveller. And I think it isn’t faster to do it by hand.
Sometimes it’s in the technique and you only get better when you practice it. A longer seated knife helps. I’m gonna try and explain it in an easy way to understand but it’s hard to explain a bit. 1. Figure out where you want to cut (the height) 2. Hold the knife straight and rotate your cake turner to make a shallow like all the way around your cake. 3. Use a sawing motion while rotating your cake at the same time. Be sure your knife is level. If you dip the knife the level will be uneven. 4. Continue to saw while you rotate. Eventually you will reach the middle and can lift the top layer off. I hope that helps a bit.
In short, social media for sure! Facebook and Instagram are great ways of attracting clients. I always recommend to start out with friends and family and usually things will spread by word of mouth. I have some videos on this as well :). 🥰happy baking, Helen!
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe I'm just scared of getting sued. Have you had any problems with clients complaining about the product or any issues at all. If not what would you do if you were in a situation like this. Also, thank you so so much.
@@helenkiflu5292 Well I live in Canada so the likelihood of getting sued is fairly low! In my unprofessional legal opinion, most will not get upset to the point of taking legal action as it would cost way more in legal fees than the actual worth of the product purchased. Most customers are seeking compensation in the form of a refund or more product. If you’re running a store front it is important to seek proper legal advice before continuing.
@@helenkiflu5292 it depends on where you live but it’s best to put a bit of money into having your business have an LLC. Having it prevents people from suing you directly. They can only sue the the business itself. Also, in the US it depends on the state you live in because some require you to obtain a food handlers license and have your house inspected by the health department or you can be fined or shut down. For example I live in Pennsylvania and since I have pets I can’t sell out of my home. So I would definitely check your state laws.
You can try adjusting some of your products and recipes to bring your food cost down. One of the biggest mistakes is not properly calculating what you actually are spending on product.
I love that you share you tips and are not selfish with your advice! That is so kind of you 💗
Aw that’s so sweet. Thanks, Wendy! 💕

Can you please help! I was wondering if fondant actually goes bad after opening it?! How long would it last ?
Technically you should use fondant within a year after opening it, but I’ve truly never seen fondant go bad. The texture might change and go a bit harder after a while, but just add a bit of shortening, knead it and you will be good to go!
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe Thank you so much!! I always end up throwing away my fondant a few weeks after opening it! So glad to know that it can be used for a longer time !!
She is correct!! Also if you rub the outside of it in a TINY amount of shortening, wrap in plastic wrap, and store in a ziplock it helps some as well.
Hi! I loved this video! I was wondering where you get the bigger piping tips? I ordered a set of what I though were on the bigger side piping tips but really, they were smaller :(. I’m just talking about the size of that grass tip you were using on that golf cake.
You can get them from many places! Amazon has a bunch of the larger ones too :)
I’m not sure where you live but lots of pastry/chef specialty stores have larger ones.
Oh ok thanks!
Love these tips!! And I have found them all to be true!!!💖👊
So glad you liked them!! 💕
Very informative video and your info is very on point! Good job!👏
Thanks so much!! 💕
Thanks for the tips, a lot of great information. MORE PLEASE, Thanks
You’re so welcome, Celeste!
Hi thanks for your advice I just started my own cake business n ur video was very helpful
Good luck with your baking biz!! 🥰
Thnku...😊
Hi, I'm starting my home bakery and really nervous. Pricing is the hardest part for me.
It’s tricky for everyone that’s for sure!! I have videos on pricing if you want to check them out 😊
Thank you so much
Watching here thanks for sharing....
Thank you so much for sharing your tips cakes are lovely Stay safe GOD bless you 😍
Thanks so much, Charmaine!
How do you find out what the competitors' pricing is?
I just asked around or looked on websites. Many have starting prices at the very least :)
I would love to learn more about running a home bakery :)
wow thanks fot tips and trick i want to practice this in my small own bussiness😍😍
You should! :)
Hi Ashleigh! Do you sell the recipe for the first vanilla cake you showed? Thanks in advance
It’s in this video description here: th-cam.com/video/Jr7y_jxaxms/w-d-xo.html
Enjoy!! 💕🥰🍰
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe thank you I wil be trying it soon🥳
I work at a bakery. I hate when people say "just make it pretty." Your pretty and my pretty are VERY DIFFERENT
Right?! Same thing for “but don’t make it too sweet”-okay I’ll get right on that and have an in-depth look at your palette 😂
Great info & tips ! Thank you
You’re welcome! 💕
I love the tips you are so original love it n thanks
So sweet of you to say! 💕🥰
what’s the thing that you pour on your cakes called (on the sponge layers?)
It’s a simple syrup with a 1:1 ratio of sugar and warm water 🥰
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe thankyou!
i agree ,time and skills are valuable.tnx for the tips,
You’re very welcome! 💕
Can you talk about what type of buttercream are profitable?
I’ve started a small business abs I need help with mani my menu boards and pricing boards. Where is the best most user friendly place I can do this at?
Great video!!
I'm doing it with cookies and didn't realize that I've been doing the steps explained here. But my cookies business hasn't taken off very well yet.
Give it some time!!! 💕🥰
I’ve done cookies and they are very very time consuming at times so be sure that you aren’t under charging! Also, reach out to some wedding venues in your area and see if you can leave your cards for couples. Some people like custom cookies for wedding or other party favors.
That golf cake is cool asf
Thank you!
Please.mam give me the guidance so thatl l can start my baking businessfrom home on a smallscale
I think the best place to start is to figure out what it is you’re passionate about selling. Come up with a product list and then start with selling to friends and family 🥰
Yes more information please and thank you!!!!! 🥰
Always! :)
Thank you! Wow, being able to level that many cakes at once sounds fabulous. Happy baking 🥰
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe thank you, i appreciate you taking the time to answer me!
But when we put a lot of price like 300$ people don't buy from our bakery and go to the cheap ones so then what will we do
Another bakery can always “do it for cheaper”, but nobody can decorate a cake exactly like your bakery and nobody can make a cake taste exactly Iike yours if you use a special recipe. Try not to get discouraged. Stick to your pricing and if your product is good quality you won’t be losing out! 🙂
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe thank you will surely try
Hi! I’m a new subscriber.. Thank you for sharing this information it’s really helpful. I’m new to BC, Canada.. And I want to follow my passion in baking too. I discovered u r based out of BC too 😊 Just want to know are there any prerequisites of starting up a home bakery in British Columbia. U what I mean.. Is there a way you can help me with some information on it. Is there any certifications etc I need to atleast start selling my cakes here. I have lots of questions and I feel lost. Not sure if I can discuss it here. Is there a way we can connect? I look forward to hearing from you. I’ll really appreciate your help! 😊💕
It definitely depends on your health region! So I would first look into that. 💕🥰
Amazing video n useful information well done 👏🏻 🤗❤️
Thank you! 🥰
I don’t sell cakes, but i do sell desserts, and I find these vids VERY educational!💜
I’m so glad 💕🥰
Which desserts do you sell?

Thanks for the tips! I feel like so much time goes into my cakes because I want them to be perfect, and I'm not charging enough. I usually charge $60 for a 6in and $80 for an 8in? Is that enough?

Hi I’m 14 and have started a business in August and still haven’t gotten a sale any tips on how to get a sale
Hi Manila! Have you started with trying to sell to friends and family first?
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe I have and I’ve been giving out free things but I feel like I’m getting taking advantage of and I got an order and the lady was all up for it until I told her how much I charged for 12 mason jar parfaits
Aw I’m sorry this is happening to you. It can be difficult when starting out and when I was young it was hard for me to be taken seriously as well! All you need is one or two good orders to get things rolling. Keep posting as much as you can on social media. Maybe try offering DIY kits this Christmas season? I know hot chocolate bombs are huge sellers for everyone this winter!! Good luck 💕
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe thank you so much I might try those diy kits!!!!!
Thanks for sharing🙏

Is there any baking online classes you recommend?
I learned SO much from Yolanda’s videos. She is so amazing and I really like that she stays on top of trends and creates new ones!:
howtocakeit.com/?rfsn=4873256.99a81b
I plan to try opening a business for solely cupcakes. Probably makes it a bit simpler since there's not quite as many things you need for cupcakes that you do for cakes.
Wishing you the best with your cupcake biz!! ❤️
To each their own for sure! If you like your cake leveller keep using it 🥰💕🍰
Sometimes it’s in the technique and you only get better when you practice it. A longer seated knife helps. I’m gonna try and explain it in an easy way to understand but it’s hard to explain a bit.
1. Figure out where you want to cut (the height)
Just a question does anyone know how to find clients or get orders?
Awesome advice.
Thank you 💕
Yes I would like to know more tips
Coming at ya! 🥰
Thanks again

Thanks a million for sharing your tips👍🏻❤️

When you live in an area where you can’t get these prices, what do you do?
Do you mean where you can’t sell your product for that much? 🥰
@@SweetDreamsBakeShoppe yes, if I sold for the prices you suggest I would not have a business.
@@payneeavis7366 ah yes, pricing will definitely differ from place to place! Even city to city can be different.
You can try adjusting some of your products and recipes to bring your food cost down. One of the biggest mistakes is not properly calculating what you actually are spending on product.

How do you accept payments online, in person, events, etc. I don't want to do cash and was just wondering how you process payments.
E-Transfer (you can set it up so payments are automatically accepted) OR PayPal. PayPal is very secure but there are servicing fees. 💕
