Krillin goes out knowing he's in way over his head (ha) and absolutely does not want to be there but does it because he knows he must. Exactly, he's using the percentage of Goku's DNA within Cell as a loophole in his programming. He wanted to step in and save 17 and 18 from Cell, but couldn't fully engage Cell until the parameters had been established, and once they were, he was free to go ham.
If you think of the lore that 16 is Geros son, it’s more likely that he allowed 16 to make the comparison because he knows how it feels to lose a son and wouldn’t kill a child just for revenge…I mean this is anime where a bad guy can kill a city of people, but it works

I've always liked the "He died as he lived... alone." line contrasting the fact that the other two people in Piccolo's head are chattering away. It's a intimidating, sinister line from Cell that nevertheless shows just how little understanding he has of the people he's made from. He's from another timeline and barely has any grasp of these people better than Trunks, yet acts as though he knows them inside and out.
And that lack of understanding is ultimately one of the threads of his undoing - underestimating what Goku would do to protect the earth, and underestimating how strong Gohan would be able to become with Goku’s guidance and encouragement
Oh my headcanon is that cell knows all the Z fighters just enough. Like he knew Piccolo fused with Kami. I like to think Cell could hear both Nail and Kami but choose to ignore them.
I love the angle of Cell being some, parasocial-self-insert. He travels through time, steals all of his techniques, he can regenerate, he has several complex forms. He inserts "Saibamen" haphazardly into the plot, he forces a meaningless tournament setpiece. He's the ultimate creation of the Red Ribbon army, he's been "watching" them for several decades. He's essentially a Dragonball fan living the dream he's been craving. His story feels like a OC backstory, in a good way. It's probably not the main intention but I like that a lot.
Closely followed by Trunks: "And behind all that insufferable smarm is a DEAD MAN" P. Cell: "Trunks... You couldn't fathom the amount of dead men behind me"
I especially love that line because it demonstrates how much Piccolo has changed over the series. He went from being a self-centered anti-hero to one the Z Fighters most dedicated to their role: Protecting Earth and its people.
It gives off the same vibe of "Can you count how many breads you have eaten in your life?" best part is I don't think they were even trying to reference it when they came up with the line.

I didn't need this information. I could have gone my whole life without ever having known it, and I would have been just fine. But, now that that little detail has been brought to my attention, it adds a little something to the joke that I hadn't known before, and makes me appreciate it that much more.
Cell makes the Android Saga so fun. I know it's heavily critiqued that the saga feels confusing and ideas just get dropped, but I like how unique the narrative is at keeping you guessing. And it was fun having a bug man randomly invade the psychotic teenagers plotline.
you know, that's a good point. I always hated that all these characters came and went, but in the end nobody achieves anything for the plot except Goku and Gohan. But the very FIRST time I watched this, I didn't know that would happen. It did keep me guessing on that first watch.
19 and 20 were the original antagonists of the saga, then toriyama’s editor said “you really want the michelin dude and an old man as your villain?” so 17 and 18 were written. then toriyama’s editor said “you really want two teenage brats as your villain” so cell was written
I looked up the Pokemon cries for Cell--Imperfect Cell's is Scyther. Semi-Perfect Cell's is Smoochum. Both are fitting choices, since the first is a green bug and the second has big lips. I didn't get the joke until I looked it up!
You know, as great as it would be to have them emulate a dedicated evolution chain, I appreciate the subtle nods like smoochum to s.p.cell. And I'm sure someone would argue "why not Jynx", to which I argue pecking order.
Well again, Piccolo knows first hand how Cell operated, that he gained dower through eating people, drinking their biomass. So he better then anyone else understood how fucked they were
Gohan's rage moment there is honestly one of the best bits of voice acting in this series, I think. Like, you can HEAR the absolute FURY in his voice. I almost wish we could hear the original uncensored version because, while it still sounds amazing, hearing it without the beep would be incredible.
This was one of absolute favorites, Piccolo's last stand, Android 16 stepping up, omg so so good. "Y'know what? Screw killing Son Goku" "NOW LET'S NOT GET CRAZY!"
Android 18 yelling "Can we FOCUS!?" at 16 and 17 is one of my favorite moments in this version of the series. its exactly what she's there for. Cell is right there but they won't stop doing bits for FIVE MINUTES to try and kill him
The memorable moment for next time on DBZA, where Tien faces Cell and says: You know what… f*** power levels, f*** Super Saiyan, and F*** YOU! SHIN KIKOHO! Though it does raise my gripe on the series being that you can’t beat later DBZ villains unless you’re Saiyan. If you’re human, you’re outta luck.

cell's "TOO LATE" right before he absorbs 17 is an underrated line read from taka imo. genuine "oh fuck" moment that really yanks you right back into the drama after a fantastic joke

The scream honestly makes me think of SpongeBob SquarePants and the sound he makes when something scares him. Just added to the hilarious cartoons vibe we get with Cell.

11:12 brings up a trope i call "Stand Around and Talk" cuz the phrase was used a lot in Red vs Blue. Its when characters *could* impact the plot in a meaningful way but the writers decide all theyre good for is a mouthpiece for what theyre either assuming the audience is thinking or explanining something in a "tell after showing" method. Dragon Ball i think incorporates this trope the most but later on most of the SAaT characters arent actually strong enough to do anything but what the trope demands.

I liked the juxtaposition of Cell having a hard count in Dragon Ball Z and just saying "Enough." in DBZA. Lani said it perfectly, Cell's indifference to all the death brings it home.

LittleKuriboh talked about this on Twitter not too long. In his own words, parody content creators are extremely scrutinized and that he has lost jobs for it even. It's unfortunate how this has affected all of these talented men. They truly deserve to showcase their talents on a professional level.
The one thing that I really wish you guys had been able to keep in your version of this episode was how Cell's aura when powering up contained all the shrieking souls of his victims. That was very different from most other power-ups we'd seen in the series, and was especially haunting. And the Faulconer Imperfect Cell theme did pair with it very well to give off an unsettling vibe.
This episode is easily an actual top five for me. It's one I look forward to most any time I do a re-watch of DBZA, because there are so many peak TFS moments. The haunting music that accompanies that scene where Piccolo asks "How.. How many people" is sooo damn effective. Tien's "I am not a spectator, I am a warrior" is a line that suits that character so well it's basically full canon for me, and the Cell vs 16 fight is just perfection all over. And there are so many edits that Kaiser has done that I genuinely thought were part of the original footage. This is a truly great episode and definitely one the entire team should be 100% proud of.

I didn't even realize that Cell didn't explain EVERYTHING about himself earlier in this version. I just assumed that it was how it happened in the manga too, and since it didn't change 'much' I never really questioned it. Been a while since I read the manga or watched the original version at that point. I do like the change now that it's been pointed out to me, and it feels like an overall improvement.
I’ve been waiting for this one. My favorite horror reference in the entire series. “Thanks to Uncle Piccolo’s cells, an ultimately fruitless effort. But if it’s any consolation, that hurt like hell!” I wondered if many people would get the Wishmaster reference. Such a great movie. “That which is eternal cannot die. 20:25 This joke is so well written, because it takes the fact that Toriyama mixed up the words for android and cyborg (in Japanese, they’re much more similar than in English, with only the first Kanji being different: 人造人間, jinzouningen - artificial human vs. 改造人間, kaizouningen - modified human) and turns it into both a brick joke after Cell’s “Well good for you, you’re wrong.” conversation with Piccolo and such a badass moment.
when one looks up the term "passion project," dbza should show up as an example. you can just feel the love oozing out of every line of dialogue, every split second edit that you don't consciously notice but makes such a huge impact. and watching these three friends bicker, too, it's clear you can see the decades of connection between them. and their collective passion for this project and the show, and how it it's made such a massive impact on their lives. i think dbz, and by extension dbza, has had such a profound impact on us all as a whole in such a myriad of ways. genuinely cannot wait for gohan v cell. i'll bring some tissues.
Definitely one of my top 5 episodes, the writing was top-notch, balancing that comedy/action ratio nicely, the reads were getting nailed ("WALK TOWARDS IT!"/"I AM A WARRIOR!"/"I don't think any of us were [ready for today]"/'I'LL KILL HIM!"), and Scott continuing his great editing work to make everything land. I'm looking forward to Semi-Perfect Cell's little therapy session soon. 😂

The "Enough" line did make me think of a dexter scene, one serial killer asking another serial killer about their body count, he wanted to compare kill counts. But you could see a look come over the other's face not just incredulity that they are being asked that question but also that it was clear that they had no idea what the answer was. It was like he was being asked "how many hamburgers have you eaten?" It never occurred to them to keep track.
Cell vs. 16 is easily my favorite fight of the show. The animation, the Gundam sound effects, 16's unique fighting style, and us getting to see a side of a character that we don't see often. And of course the abundance of amazing one-liners. "These parameters... *are acceptable*." "Affirmative. I am *Android* 16." "Oh. Errors have been made." "Boop." "Rocket punch!" "*WHAT!?*" "Wow, really?" "THAT IS SO COOL!" Everything comes together in a symphony of perfection (heh), and that last line is one of my favorite written exchanges ever.
I love the fact that multiple times throughout this arc, you can see how far piccolo has come. He is no longer evil, he genuinely cares about protecting the planet, and protecting the people of earth. I think they just really is so perfectly expressed with the, “How… How many people?!” line. I love that character arc so much.
As awesome and scary Cell is in this episode, which he is, 16 is always the reason I come back to this episode. Hearing such a docile, literally robotic character take action and kick butt is just the best. His even tone just makes all of his lines hit so hard.
25:30 The funny thing is when android 17 was saying they should forget destroying everything, it's the exact opposite in the anime. In that scene he actually says now that cell is gone, we can get back to destroying the world cuz no one can stop them now.
I doubt they'd read this comment, but about the voice damaging Taka, its because he's a higher voice. As people, we have 2 vocal chords. One for higher voices, which is typically what we also use for our normal speaking voice. The other is for lower voices and what we use mostly for burps and puking. We don't use our lower vocal chords normally, which is why Lani can get away with piccolo and vegeta. Its also why a lot of screamo artists start with lower screams rather than higher.
I use the gif of 16 saying, "These parameters... are acceptable" so often. This episode has some of my favorite lines in it, and I can not stress enough how much I respect you guys as writers.
as much as we as a community have complained about the comments sections at various times being mostly "quote from the video", these commentaries have helped me see that as potentially a great source of feedback for them
I really do like the approach you guys take to action comedy. You have your serious moments, and you don't sabotage them too hard with comedy, more supplementing them, I feel.

I just can't get enough of them talking about voice acting details in the voices themselves. Like Piccolo and Cell where characters playing themselves in a movie and they're just standing around the kraft services table talking about how all the screaming is rough on their vocal cords. That's one of the reasons I love HFIL so much: we get to see all these great characters taken out of their context.
in every one of these creator commentary vids I always hit a point where I'm in awe of how much work Kaiser put into the series. He had such incredible attention to detail that elevated the show so much

Because at this point, the androids haven’t even been trying in their fights and bodying everyone. They basically took a page from vegeta when he got his namek winning streak, got overconfident and didn’t know when to fold and walk away

It's likely. Vegeta was stronger than Goku after he came out of the chamber. 16 was Gero's strongest Android outside of Cell and they were evenly matched.

Took me far too long to remember what Smoochum sounded like. That's how little I ever heard it.
I didn't need this information. I could have gone my whole life without ever having known it, and I would have been just fine. But, now that that little detail has been brought to my attention, it adds a little something to the joke that I hadn't known before, and makes me appreciate it that much more.

Cell makes the Android Saga so fun.
I know it's heavily critiqued that the saga feels confusing and ideas just get dropped, but I like how unique the narrative is at keeping you guessing. And it was fun having a bug man randomly invade the psychotic teenagers plotline.
The narrative keeps us guessing cause the author was literally guessing
you know, that's a good point. I always hated that all these characters came and went, but in the end nobody achieves anything for the plot except Goku and Gohan. But the very FIRST time I watched this, I didn't know that would happen. It did keep me guessing on that first watch.
19 and 20 were the original antagonists of the saga, then toriyama’s editor said “you really want the michelin dude and an old man as your villain?” so 17 and 18 were written. then toriyama’s editor said “you really want two teenage brats as your villain” so cell was written
All three of you bros have such great voices in general. It must seem surreal to look back on such a project. Masters of the craft.

I looked up the Pokemon cries for Cell--Imperfect Cell's is Scyther. Semi-Perfect Cell's is Smoochum. Both are fitting choices, since the first is a green bug and the second has big lips. I didn't get the joke until I looked it up!
You know, as great as it would be to have them emulate a dedicated evolution chain, I appreciate the subtle nods like smoochum to s.p.cell.
And I'm sure someone would argue "why not Jynx", to which I argue pecking order.

Taka's take on Imperfect Cell is practically perfect. He's a horrifying predator _and_ a great source of comedy
He doesn’t even like TURN turn, it’s practically a glance at Piccolo, somehow that makes it even colder.
Well again, Piccolo knows first hand how Cell operated, that he gained dower through eating people, drinking their biomass. So he better then anyone else understood how fucked they were
Gohan's rage moment there is honestly one of the best bits of voice acting in this series, I think. Like, you can HEAR the absolute FURY in his voice. I almost wish we could hear the original uncensored version because, while it still sounds amazing, hearing it without the beep would be incredible.
Scott’s editing is ridiculously good. Hope he realizes how good he is!

18’s really just that group’s Tien. The straight man unwittingly stuck working with fools.

Tien is easily my favorite character in dragonball and you guys absolutely give the next episode justice for Tien. Cant wait for you guys to talk about this. Also Tiens delivery on, "I AM NOT A SPECTATOR I AM A WARRIOR!!!!" Is an incredible delivery. Gets me every time.
cell's "TOO LATE" right before he absorbs 17 is an underrated line read from taka imo. genuine "oh fuck" moment that really yanks you right back into the drama after a fantastic joke

11:12 brings up a trope i call "Stand Around and Talk" cuz the phrase was used a lot in Red vs Blue. Its when characters *could* impact the plot in a meaningful way but the writers decide all theyre good for is a mouthpiece for what theyre either assuming the audience is thinking or explanining something in a "tell after showing" method. Dragon Ball i think incorporates this trope the most but later on most of the SAaT characters arent actually strong enough to do anything but what the trope demands.
"That's what they were doing last week, that's what they were doing five minutes ago. So five minutes _from now_ , when you ask me 'what are they doing?', my answer's gonna be 'they're still just talking and they're still just standing there.'"

I liked the juxtaposition of Cell having a hard count in Dragon Ball Z and just saying "Enough." in DBZA. Lani said it perfectly, Cell's indifference to all the death brings it home.
How is Lani not everywhere as a voice actor? He has way too much range. I know he's done some but he needs…more.

LittleKuriboh talked about this on Twitter not too long. In his own words, parody content creators are extremely scrutinized and that he has lost jobs for it even. It's unfortunate how this has affected all of these talented men. They truly deserve to showcase their talents on a professional level.

The one thing that I really wish you guys had been able to keep in your version of this episode was how Cell's aura when powering up contained all the shrieking souls of his victims. That was very different from most other power-ups we'd seen in the series, and was especially haunting. And the Faulconer Imperfect Cell theme did pair with it very well to give off an unsettling vibe.
Wow... That would've been awfully haunting. Good call.
This episode is easily an actual top five for me. It's one I look forward to most any time I do a re-watch of DBZA, because there are so many peak TFS moments.
The haunting music that accompanies that scene where Piccolo asks "How.. How many people" is sooo damn effective.
Tien's "I am not a spectator, I am a warrior" is a line that suits that character so well it's basically full canon for me, and the Cell vs 16 fight is just perfection all over.
And there are so many edits that Kaiser has done that I genuinely thought were part of the original footage.
This is a truly great episode and definitely one the entire team should be 100% proud of.
Besides Episodes 52-54 and the Finale, THIS is my all time favorite Episode of Season 3.

Seriously, one of the best lines in the series. We get plenty of badass lines, but that one is just downright terrifying. Cell has wiped out entire *cities* to get enough power for this.

I didn't even realize that Cell didn't explain EVERYTHING about himself earlier in this version. I just assumed that it was how it happened in the manga too, and since it didn't change 'much' I never really questioned it. Been a while since I read the manga or watched the original version at that point. I do like the change now that it's been pointed out to me, and it feels like an overall improvement.
Cell totally unlocked Mutated Super Saiyan via absorption, (and SS2 after his near death), its why his aura is like that

20:25 This joke is so well written, because it takes the fact that Toriyama mixed up the words for android and cyborg (in Japanese, they’re much more similar than in English, with only the first Kanji being different: 人造人間, jinzouningen - artificial human vs. 改造人間, kaizouningen - modified human) and turns it into both a brick joke after Cell’s “Well good for you, you’re wrong.” conversation with Piccolo and such a badass moment.

you can just feel the love oozing out of every line of dialogue, every split second edit that you don't consciously notice but makes such a huge impact. and watching these three friends bicker, too, it's clear you can see the decades of connection between them. and their collective passion for this project and the show, and how it it's made such a massive impact on their lives.
i think dbz, and by extension dbza, has had such a profound impact on us all as a whole in such a myriad of ways.
genuinely cannot wait for gohan v cell. i'll bring some tissues.

Definitely one of my top 5 episodes, the writing was top-notch, balancing that comedy/action ratio nicely, the reads were getting nailed ("WALK TOWARDS IT!"/"I AM A WARRIOR!"/"I don't think any of us were [ready for today]"/'I'LL KILL HIM!"), and Scott continuing his great editing work to make everything land. I'm looking forward to Semi-Perfect Cell's little therapy session soon. 😂

"This Cell is comprised of 10.78% of Son Gokū's DNA. These Parameters...Are Acceptable." I got genuine chills the first time I heard that line, and still can't help but get hyped every time I hear it. Amazing line Lani, truly a stroke of brilliance.
The "Enough" line did make me think of a dexter scene, one serial killer asking another serial killer about their body count, he wanted to compare kill counts.
But you could see a look come over the other's face not just incredulity that they are being asked that question but also that it was clear that they had no idea what the answer was. It was like he was being asked "how many hamburgers have you eaten?" It never occurred to them to keep track.
Cell vs. 16 is easily my favorite fight of the show. The animation, the Gundam sound effects, 16's unique fighting style, and us getting to see a side of a character that we don't see often. And of course the abundance of amazing one-liners.

This episode made me like 16 more than the actual show ever did, so badass
I love the fact that multiple times throughout this arc, you can see how far piccolo has come. He is no longer evil, he genuinely cares about protecting the planet, and protecting the people of earth. I think they just really is so perfectly expressed with the, “How… How many people?!” line. I love that character arc so much.
As awesome and scary Cell is in this episode, which he is, 16 is always the reason I come back to this episode. Hearing such a docile, literally robotic character take action and kick butt is just the best. His even tone just makes all of his lines hit so hard.
I tune in as a fan, a writer, and an editor, but I love hearing the inside ball on voice acting that I never expected.
The Titanic band homage playing ‘Nearer Thy God to Thee’ is one of my top 10 favorite moments

I doubt they'd read this comment, but about the voice damaging Taka, its because he's a higher voice. As people, we have 2 vocal chords. One for higher voices, which is typically what we also use for our normal speaking voice. The other is for lower voices and what we use mostly for burps and puking. We don't use our lower vocal chords normally, which is why Lani can get away with piccolo and vegeta. Its also why a lot of screamo artists start with lower screams rather than higher.

as much as we as a community have complained about the comments sections at various times being mostly "quote from the video", these commentaries have helped me see that as potentially a great source of feedback for them
I really do like the approach you guys take to action comedy. You have your serious moments, and you don't sabotage them too hard with comedy, more supplementing them, I feel.

I just can't get enough of them talking about voice acting details in the voices themselves. Like Piccolo and Cell where characters playing themselves in a movie and they're just standing around the kraft services table talking about how all the screaming is rough on their vocal cords.
That's one of the reasons I love HFIL so much: we get to see all these great characters taken out of their context.

It's likely. Vegeta was stronger than Goku after he came out of the chamber. 16 was Gero's strongest Android outside of Cell and they were evenly matched.
