Tien being pissed off about not being useful is what made me really like him. He understands that he's outmatched, and that the SMART thing to do is wait for support. His pride won't let him sit still though, so he just goes for it knowing full well he's probably going to die.
@@maddestlad3868 Exactly. He's Krillin but on the opposite opinion. Krillin goes out knowing he's in way over his head (ha) and absolutely does not want to be there but does it because he knows he must. Tien is often left on the sidelines and *wants* to be out there helping but more often than not is in a situation where he can't.
Tien in these next episodes is some of the best of this series

I've always loved the juxtaposition of 18's dismissive, "Wow, really?" with 17's amazed "THAT IS SO COOL!"
That always reminded me of a running gag in One Piece whenever it comes to boys and girls reactions to mecha stuff.
18 is thinking about how stupid it is to give a rocket fist instead of just letting him fire energy blasts like the rest of them, while 17 is just thinking "damn, I wish I had a rocket fist."

@@Spider8Crak I kind of see it as 16 specifically being equipped with blasters rather than...whatever allows 17-20 to use energy blasts. So that's why he has the rocket fists rather than the ability to channel ki.
17:27 It is ridiculous that I've seen people claim this is a plot hole for DBZA, and they ask why No. 16 doesn't attack Gohan, being 50% Goku DNA. But they ignore that 16 made a conscious decision to kill Cell. He doesn't fly into a murderous rampage the moment when he detects Goku's DNA.
Exactly, he's using the percentage of Goku's DNA within Cell as a loophole in his programming. He wanted to step in and save 17 and 18 from Cell, but couldn't fully engage Cell until the parameters had been established, and once they were, he was free to go ham.
If you think of the lore that 16 is Geros son, it’s more likely that he allowed 16 to make the comparison because he knows how it feels to lose a son and wouldn’t kill a child just for revenge…I mean this is anime where a bad guy can kill a city of people, but it works
Eh, it's a bit of a nit pick, but I get it. Either way, it gave us all what we wanted - for Cell to get a beat-down from the last place he was expecting!

@@BENergizer1 More specifically, that implies Gero's programming meant he COULDN'T act against another creation of Gero (or perhaps outside of Gero's specifically programmed directives in the first place), so he used the conflict of orders to place priority based on the prime directive of 'kill Goku'.

I've always liked the "He died as he lived... alone." line contrasting the fact that the other two people in Piccolo's head are chattering away. It's a intimidating, sinister line from Cell that nevertheless shows just how little understanding he has of the people he's made from. He's from another timeline and barely has any grasp of these people better than Trunks, yet acts as though he knows them inside and out.
And that lack of understanding is ultimately one of the threads of his undoing - underestimating what Goku would do to protect the earth, and underestimating how strong Gohan would be able to become with Goku’s guidance and encouragement
Oh my headcanon is that cell knows all the Z fighters just enough. Like he knew Piccolo fused with Kami. I like to think Cell could hear both Nail and Kami but choose to ignore them.

I love the angle of Cell being some, parasocial-self-insert. He travels through time, steals all of his techniques, he can regenerate, he has several complex forms. He inserts "Saibamen" haphazardly into the plot, he forces a meaningless tournament setpiece.
He's the ultimate creation of the Red Ribbon army, he's been "watching" them for several decades. He's essentially a Dragonball fan living the dream he's been craving. His story feels like a OC backstory, in a good way.
It's probably not the main intention but I like that a lot.

Hellzone Grenade has to be one of my favorite attacks in DBZ

I especially love that line because it demonstrates how much Piccolo has changed over the series. He went from being a self-centered anti-hero to one the Z Fighters most dedicated to their role: Protecting Earth and its people.
I still think the "Don't mind me, please... GIVE ME SOME IDEAS" is the coldest, but this one's definitely up there
I never noticed it before but hearing 17 repeatedly saying "I'm too cool for this!" While literally dying is haunting and hilarious.
You can tell that 18 is the older one because she is effortlessly cool while 17 tries so hard to be.
You can tell Kaiser's a true Dragon Ball fan by how much hes enjoying watching the other two scream

Took me far too long to remember what Smoochum sounded like. That's how little I ever heard it.
I didn't need this information. I could have gone my whole life without ever having known it, and I would have been just fine. But, now that that little detail has been brought to my attention, it adds a little something to the joke that I hadn't known before, and makes me appreciate it that much more.
I wonder if anyone else noticed this tidbit and made an unnoticed comment about it before this one? 😠

Taka's take on Imperfect Cell is practically perfect. He's a horrifying predator _and_ a great source of comedy
He doesn’t even like TURN turn, it’s practically a glance at Piccolo, somehow that makes it even colder.
Well again, Piccolo knows first hand how Cell operated, that he gained dower through eating people, drinking their biomass. So he better then anyone else understood how fucked they were
Cell makes the Android Saga so fun.
I know it's heavily critiqued that the saga feels confusing and ideas just get dropped, but I like how unique the narrative is at keeping you guessing. And it was fun having a bug man randomly invade the psychotic teenagers plotline.
The narrative keeps us guessing cause the author was literally guessing
you know, that's a good point. I always hated that all these characters came and went, but in the end nobody achieves anything for the plot except Goku and Gohan. But the very FIRST time I watched this, I didn't know that would happen. It did keep me guessing on that first watch.
“Walk Toward It” remains one of the absolute most badass lines/line-reads in the entire series, for me. Such perfect delivery.
I looked up the Pokemon cries for Cell--Imperfect Cell's is Scyther. Semi-Perfect Cell's is Smoochum. Both are fitting choices, since the first is a green bug and the second has big lips. I didn't get the joke until I looked it up!
You know, as great as it would be to have them emulate a dedicated evolution chain, I appreciate the subtle nods like smoochum to s.p.cell.
And I'm sure someone would argue "why not Jynx", to which I argue pecking order.

Gohan's rage moment there is honestly one of the best bits of voice acting in this series, I think. Like, you can HEAR the absolute FURY in his voice. I almost wish we could hear the original uncensored version because, while it still sounds amazing, hearing it without the beep would be incredible.
A personal favorite from this ep was Android 18's "Can we FOCUS!?" Delivery was fantastic.
"And the answer may surprise yo-AAAAUUUGGGGHHHHHHHHH!"
Never fails to make me chortle. The line, the delivery, the dumbass expression on Cell's face. Taka, you killed it.
Perfection.
The scream honestly makes me think of SpongeBob SquarePants and the sound he makes when something scares him. Just added to the hilarious cartoons vibe we get with Cell.

Android 18 yelling "Can we FOCUS!?" at 16 and 17 is one of my favorite moments in this version of the series. its exactly what she's there for. Cell is right there but they won't stop doing bits for FIVE MINUTES to try and kill him
18’s really just that group’s Tien. The straight man unwittingly stuck working with fools.
I get chills when cell just says "enough" cause that's all he needs to say

cell's "TOO LATE" right before he absorbs 17 is an underrated line read from taka imo. genuine "oh fuck" moment that really yanks you right back into the drama after a fantastic joke

Lani I believe it was had a tweet rant against them shortly thereafter, made a video calling out Chris Sabat specifically, and then quickly made an apology video because you really can’t get into Funni these days without Chris Sabat’s approval. I think the apology video may still be up.
@@VidelxSpopovich I find it laughable that they tried to hit them with copyright violations firstly was the fact DBZA falls completely in fair use, secondly the amount of funimation shills there were saying that “well the creators have a right to take down someone using their works as a basis of their own project” ignoring the fact that Funimation only handled dubbing and distribution as such they weren’t the “ creators”
'I UNCLOGGED YOUR TOILET!' was not something I expected to hear in one of these...and it made me laugh for a good solid minute.

The one thing that I really wish you guys had been able to keep in your version of this episode was how Cell's aura when powering up contained all the shrieking souls of his victims. That was very different from most other power-ups we'd seen in the series, and was especially haunting. And the Faulconer Imperfect Cell theme did pair with it very well to give off an unsettling vibe.
Wow... That would've been awfully haunting. Good call.
Besides Episodes 52-54 and the Finale, THIS is my all time favorite Episode of Season 3.

I like to think of it as a duality between female and male interest (respectively) in robot/mech-related stuff like this.
I liked the juxtaposition of Cell having a hard count in Dragon Ball Z and just saying "Enough." in DBZA. Lani said it perfectly, Cell's indifference to all the death brings it home.
11:12 brings up a trope i call "Stand Around and Talk" cuz the phrase was used a lot in Red vs Blue. Its when characters *could* impact the plot in a meaningful way but the writers decide all theyre good for is a mouthpiece for what theyre either assuming the audience is thinking or explanining something in a "tell after showing" method. Dragon Ball i think incorporates this trope the most but later on most of the SAaT characters arent actually strong enough to do anything but what the trope demands.
"That's what they were doing last week, that's what they were doing five minutes ago. So five minutes _from now_ , when you ask me 'what are they doing?', my answer's gonna be 'they're still just talking and they're still just standing there.'"
Yeah, when you guys bring out the METAL for your lines, it's something special.

The "how many people.. enough" line still gives absolute shivers down my spine. You've made something special here.
Seriously, one of the best lines in the series. We get plenty of badass lines, but that one is just downright terrifying. Cell has wiped out entire *cities* to get enough power for this.
it's so chilling the fact if we were to use the farmer with a shotguns power level which was 5 being the average.. it's like oh.. that's uhm.. wow.
I like to think all of 16's moves are stuff Gero's son thought was cool.
This episode is easily an actual top five for me. It's one I look forward to most any time I do a re-watch of DBZA, because there are so many peak TFS moments.
The haunting music that accompanies that scene where Piccolo asks "How.. How many people" is sooo damn effective.
Tien's "I am not a spectator, I am a warrior" is a line that suits that character so well it's basically full canon for me, and the Cell vs 16 fight is just perfection all over.
And there are so many edits that Kaiser has done that I genuinely thought were part of the original footage.
This is a truly great episode and definitely one the entire team should be 100% proud of.
I didn't even realize that Cell didn't explain EVERYTHING about himself earlier in this version. I just assumed that it was how it happened in the manga too, and since it didn't change 'much' I never really questioned it. Been a while since I read the manga or watched the original version at that point. I do like the change now that it's been pointed out to me, and it feels like an overall improvement.

I actually shouted YES when 16 said this, SO MUCH COOLER THAN THE ANIME!
when one looks up the term "passion project," dbza should show up as an example.
you can just feel the love oozing out of every line of dialogue, every split second edit that you don't consciously notice but makes such a huge impact. and watching these three friends bicker, too, it's clear you can see the decades of connection between them. and their collective passion for this project and the show, and how it it's made such a massive impact on their lives.
i think dbz, and by extension dbza, has had such a profound impact on us all as a whole in such a myriad of ways.

Definitely one of my top 5 episodes, the writing was top-notch, balancing that comedy/action ratio nicely, the reads were getting nailed ("WALK TOWARDS IT!"/"I AM A WARRIOR!"/"I don't think any of us were [ready for today]"/'I'LL KILL HIM!"), and Scott continuing his great editing work to make everything land. I'm looking forward to Semi-Perfect Cell's little therapy session soon. 😂
I’ve been waiting for this one. My favorite horror reference in the entire series. “Thanks to Uncle Piccolo’s cells, an ultimately fruitless effort. But if it’s any consolation, that hurt like hell!” I wondered if many people would get the Wishmaster reference. Such a great movie. “That which is eternal cannot die. But if it’s any consolation sweet Alex…”
This episode made me like 16 more than the actual show ever did, so badass
i’m still sad we never got to see Nail gun at it’s maximum power

I tune in as a fan, a writer, and an editor, but I love hearing the inside ball on voice acting that I never expected.

Honestly I love TFS tenshinhan
The "Enough" line did make me think of a dexter scene, one serial killer asking another serial killer about their body count, he wanted to compare kill counts.
But you could see a look come over the other's face not just incredulity that they are being asked that question but also that it was clear that they had no idea what the answer was. It was like he was being asked "how many hamburgers have you eaten?" It never occurred to them to keep track.
the "enough" line is one of the coldest things I have ever heard. this episode was a menagerie (a word i learned from dbza) for sick lines.
As awesome and scary Cell is in this episode, which he is, 16 is always the reason I come back to this episode. Hearing such a docile, literally robotic character take action and kick butt is just the best. His even tone just makes all of his lines hit so hard.
The Titanic band homage playing ‘Nearer Thy God to Thee’ is one of my top 10 favorite moments

I just realized, we all have to go through DBZA ending again. They are putting out new content and showing us behind the scene, which is absolutely amazing. But this too shall end.....again.

Well, if nothing else, we are getting the HFIL bits and those are honestly pretty fun too. Different, but they still feel like they got what made these great.
I love the fact that multiple times throughout this arc, you can see how far piccolo has come. He is no longer evil, he genuinely cares about protecting the planet, and protecting the people of earth. I think they just really is so perfectly expressed with the, “How… How many people?!” line. I love that character arc so much.
Love how ham 16 goes, makes me wonder could he have beaten Goku if Cell or even 17 and 18 hasn't been a thing?
It's likely. Vegeta was stronger than Goku after he came out of the chamber. 16 was Gero's strongest Android outside of Cell and they were evenly matched.
This episode has so many good lines they just breezed past my favorite: "Enough! I am not a spectator. I am A WARRIOR!"
I actually cited you guys in a paper during my screenwriting class in college, about planting and payoff of jokes. You were still in season 2 at the time, I think.

20:25 This joke is so well written, because it takes the fact that Toriyama mixed up the words for android and cyborg (in Japanese, they’re much more similar than in English, with only the first Kanji being different: 人造人間, jinzouningen - artificial human vs. 改造人間, kaizouningen - modified human) and turns it into both a brick joke after Cell’s “Well good for you, you’re wrong.” conversation with Piccolo and such a badass moment.
I really do like the approach you guys take to action comedy. You have your serious moments, and you don't sabotage them too hard with comedy, more supplementing them, I feel.
11:00 absolutely fantastic example of why these commentaries are amazing to watch
I just can't get enough of them talking about voice acting details in the voices themselves. Like Piccolo and Cell where characters playing themselves in a movie and they're just standing around the kraft services table talking about how all the screaming is rough on their vocal cords.
That's one of the reasons I love HFIL so much: we get to see all these great characters taken out of their context.
I felt actual, physical pain at how true it would be that Elon would give Cell the blue checkmark.
Sad how Cell is more likable considering all the shit he did. Guess it helps he has actual charm.
The company I work at makes those "I ESCAPED" stickers. We make mostly junk mail unfortunately, so it makes me happy to know at least one of the things we make bring some joy to people I admire.

I think episodes 46 to about 53 were just great all throughout. The pacing slows down after Perfect Cell a little bit, rightfully so. But yeah, episodes 46 to 53 had great mix of action and comedy. When I rewatch DBZA, I have a specific love for Namekamania and these string of episodes. I love DBZA's comedy don't get me wrong, but the mix of comedy and action are where the series stands out the most for me.
Edit: Also, Kaiser is an absolute legend with the edits. Master at his craft.
My favorite “why are you still here” is from the next episode where 16 is just DONE “why…are you…still here!?”
"This Cell is comprised of 10.78% of Son Gokū's DNA. These Parameters...Are Acceptable." I got genuine chills the first time I heard that line, and still can't help but get hyped every time I hear it. Amazing line Lani, truly a stroke of brilliance.
Cell vs. 16 is easily my favorite fight of the show. The animation, the Gundam sound effects, 16's unique fighting style, and us getting to see a side of a character that we don't see often. And of course the abundance of amazing one-liners.
"These parameters... *are acceptable*."
"Affirmative. I am *Android* 16." "Oh. Errors have been made."
"Boop."
"Rocket punch!" "*WHAT!?*" "Wow, really?" "THAT IS SO COOL!"
Everything comes together in a symphony of perfection (heh), and that last line is one of my favorite written exchanges ever.
I have no idea how feasible it would be, but i really hope that Episode 60 is the whole crew.
Honestly, episode 47 is by far and away one of the best episodes of the series.
in every one of these creator commentary vids I always hit a point where I'm in awe of how much work Kaiser put into the series. He had such incredible attention to detail that elevated the show so much
I love watching how excited these folks get about their amazing work that I've appreciated for free for years.
