Hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving! A lot of you asked for a DBZ Abridged vs. DBZ scene comparison, so here it is! I trimmed some scenes to keep the video shorter and avoid copyright issues, which also caused a bit of a delay. Also, the 'friend' I mention in the video is actually my thumbnail editor-just wanted to clarify that. Let me know which version you prefer in the comments!
the abridged version made me become a professional cell glazer tbh and im not mad. he's written so perfectly, the cockiness that would come with someone being "perfect" is quite literally perfect.
i know they give a small snippet of him because they did make a short version of the buu arc but imagine if they made it the same way they did the other arcs
I mean fair enough, did you click on this video expecting to have a ground shattering comparison or were you like me and expected we will be seeing whomever this is opinion of the show.
I always felt that for season 2 of Abridged (namek arc) and onward, they really stepped up there game. It was a treat to watch them grow as writers over the years
you could really see the mindset switch from “let’s just fuck around and have fun” to “people are actually enjoying what we’re making, we _have_ to make it good now”
The cutoff point where abridged became more than just a comedy series for me, is the introduction of the Ginyus from there on the comedy and drama is blended significantly better as before it was usually serious scene with a gag at the end, after that they start really using jokes to inform characterization and progress the plot, while also maintaining the drama appropriately.
Here’s the plain truth. The original series will always be the greatest, because of how much it impacted us all. All in all…. Abridged did it better. They were able to keep the emotional moments that needed to be kept, while entertaining us FAR beyond what the original series did. Abridged was also able to fully explain the full story effectively in 60 episodes. Particularly the Android & Cell saga, the voice acting in Abridged was quite literally better than the original. Side note: Comparing an Abridged series that was purposely made to be a comedic version of a show with the original version of said show, only to penalize the Abridged version for being comedic is an extraordinarily flawed and biased experiment.
I don't even know why you bothered to make this comparison at all considering abridged is a condensed version specifically designed to be funny and not remotely serious. And yet it's still more accurate to the original japanese a lot of the time.
Abridged entire purpose is to be humorous, so taking off points from it because it lacks the same intensity or sentimental value as the original kinda didn't make sense to me too.
Something i really wanna bring attention to is that an EXTREMELY important pretext to the Abridged "I am" speech is all the times that Vegeta has repeated a very serious version of the Saiyan legend. If Goku were to repeat that again for the hundredth time, it would be an absolute drag on the episode, so this break of Goku spilling all his nonsense in this one epic moment breaks the tradition, and makes you interested to hear what the next "I am" is going to be, which in turn IMPROVES the scene dramatically for me
Agreed. And Goku's speech is still as epic. And unrelated, but the delivery of "I am the terror that flaps in the night!" is perfect, and along with the OST ramping up in that moment, it makes it epic, even if it is a Darkwing Duck reference
I think you are both pretty biased, there are scenes in this where z is better and your friend likes abridged more, and scenes where abridged is better and you like kai or z more. I also wish you adressed some of the less iconic scenes that tfs made better; such as krillin sparing 18, vegeta's death to frieza (and really most of frieza vs the namek team), or gero's death.
What I noticed about team four star, I remember thinking they weren’t as funny when they got to the android arc in high school. But as I got older and rewatch the series. I noticed they were trying to somewhat make an official series by adding more awareness to the plot holes or being more accurate of what should’ve happened in the original series instead of joking all the time. It felt like they were trying to make improvements more, rather than be a funny parody show anymore. So when I realize that, I actually appreciated the abridged more! They took away jokes like muffin button away completely, and didn’t even bring them back for one episode after a certain point, they moved on past it. 🎉
i slightly prefer the abridged version during the first beam struggle. the reason is because, if you watch The Worlds Strongest, they have him do a "Kaio Ken times Three and a half". so it creates this anticipation for when he actually unleashes the x4. it's great payoff
@ Ngl the Z movies with the exception of Movies 9 & 13 always have some inconsistency with Z that make em impossible in the timeline, they’re more retellings of sagas or fights instead of having a plausible placement in a timeline (In my opinion, at least)
@ I dunno, felt way more like a joke relating to the scene just being the Kamehameha vs Galick Gun but with Wheelo instead of Vegeta I don’t think TFS really intended to connect Abridged with the movies to that extent, else they’d reference the films in the main series more that just… DBZA episode 31 with Dead Zone (technically)
Toriyama was gonna permanently kill off Goku here and pass the torch to Gohan but the fans weren't having it. Was gonna do the same with Vegeta but the fans stepped in and saved the show from its writer yet again.
And in turn made every deaths in dragon ball meaningless, i like the series but with all the dragon balls in the world of dragon ball, i dont think any stake can be that high anymore.

1:14:40 Yeah, in context, DBZA's version of Goku's sacrifice is far better, Goku gives Cell a Senzu bean, he pushed to have Gohan unlock his potential, not thinking about if Gohan even wanted that. In DBZ/Kai, he just goes and says bye to everyone, he doesn't really own up to his mistakes with regards to Cell and with Gohan. DBZA corrects this glaring issue IMO, it's really lacking in DBZ/Kai because of Goku's lack of ownership. DBZA here always gets me to tear up, for a parody/comedy series, that is an amazing accomplishment, meanwhile anime has Goku saving the day because Gohan screwed up.
Ever since Nappa was introduced abridged was just simply peak. also Piccolo hesitant? Piccolo was planning to kill them both all along. and he never did give a signal in the none dubbed version. You seem to forget that Piccolo and Goku were arch nemesis at the time. Piccolo did not know about the other Sayings until later, and actually assumed until Raditz told him otherwise that the fight was over. Goku would be revived and they would fight again for the world.
SS2 scene took pretty much direct inspiration from the Japanese version including a remake of the song in English. Huge homage, but also because it's newer the sound quality is great. The internal Monologue from DBZ made it a lot worse imo. Tbh it was clear he was in complete shock by the look on his face. No words needed.
I have to say, the Abridged version gives the Super Saiyan transformation a greater sense of gravity. Goku, usually a dim-witted character, is depicted with a serious intensity during the scene, and that contrast really makes the moment.
I actually grew up watching abridged. I started watching it late season 1 and always loved the show. Most of my experience with normal dbz was from the games, so I'm very biased.
Goku wasn't being idealist, and there was no moral complexity in Kai. Seriously, do you even know what those words mean? Goku was just being completely selfish putting the thrill he gets from competition above the safety and well being of not only his friends, family, and home planet, but also countless other worlds.
The difference between you and your friend. He values the comedy, you value depth. Both totally valid. I confess I love the original. But abridged I have watched over and over in my 20s the because in my youth I needed epic, in older age I need more laughter
i enjoyed this vid alot but just a suggestion, it seems a little unfair to put both dbz and dbz kai against dbza, as well as picking either a moment from z or kai against abridged because where one official version may fail the other version could have an edge against the one abridged version
That's fair. I did want to include the winners for some scenes from my dbz vs kai videos, so that's why I did it that way, but I can see what you're saying.
Yeah, and also, some people consider Kai to be different enough to be separate from the normal dbz, and consider dbs to continue from Kai while the normal dbz is followed by GT, and that's why GT stopped being canon to some
What a bewildering comparison. I don't really like Abridged at this point but I think it's pretty unfair to compare a goofy stupid parody that sometimes moves the plot forward to the actual show. Especially given early TFS' much more limited editing, mic quality and VA experience and you're comparing it to KAI, let alone old Z.
You're docking abridged points because it's not being serious, the whole point of abridged parody, it's to be funny, that's like comparing a Raptor to a Corvette and docking the Raptor cuz it's lap time was slower on the road course because it's built for off road
in your final flash scene you of the original DBZ with falconers track you still had cell screaming "Oh Shit" instead of "Whats this" best version of that scene by far
Schemmel was a hypocrite too by saying that TFS was disrespecting the original source material until the 2019 Funimation audio leaks came out with him and the other cast going off with homophobic and NSFW jokes through their voices lol.
Paused at the intro, really hoping for Android 16 and Cell dialogue, as well as Vegeta’s final flash vs cell, and pretty much all of Tien. A nice bonus would be the DBS scene they did with Trunks vs merged/degraded Zamasu
It makes no sense to compare a series to it's parody, especially if you're just going to side with the main series almost every time simply for NOT being goofy, like what is the point of this?
If you're doing a "scene comparison", why would you skip important lead-ins to the major points? you skipped over the introduction of characters to go right to the finishing blow of the fight with Raditz, you skip over how each version handles the training in lead up to the saiyan invasion, etc. Also why bother going back and forth between Z and Kai instead of just picking one or doing a 3-version comparison? This is really clunky and lacks the gravity of how a comparison should function. There is no time to dive into detail on why each scene works in-context of that version's telling of the story as you just skip to major beats and give a short synopsis of the two before giving your reason for which one is "better". Why? Why does "this scene being this tone" better? Is it because it fits the arc of the story? is it because it sets up a bigger threat? is it because it resolves a plotline? is it because it helps further a character's progression? There's a good effort done for editing and putting this video together, but it feels very half-baked. I think if you dedicated time to splitting up story arcs into their own videos you would have plenty of time to talk about why things matter in the greater narrative or for the flow of the story and say why that version works better or that version feels better to watch.
I’d say season 1 of abridged is pretty rough, I loved the jokes as a kid but they may not land on someone who’s an adult. There is definitely pay off to some of the jokes later on but there’s no doubt Kai is the better experience for the Sayain Saga. I’d say Namek saga is pretty neck and neck, I love the frieza fight in the abridged, especially frieza vs. Goku, they wrote them to work off eachother so well. Now after watching S3 again of abridged I’d say I 100% prefer watching it abridged Vs. Kai. The amount of jokes that are packed in and the emotional pay off at the end of the Cell games is one hell of a ride. Also android 16 is Goated, so hilarious. this is a fun topic to explore though for sure
If I had to put it a way it would be this, Season 1 of abridged had funny jokes and stuff but it felt more like TH-cam poops, just jokes not real feeling or writing just funny well written jokes, but then the namek arc and forward tfs nails it so good freaza feels real Evil while being funny, jokes in combat, almost gave it realism, then in season 3 tfs flies with story telling, jokes, emotion, this makes you really like these characters.
abridged gets progressively better as the series goes on. dragon ball z starts out a masterpeice, continuing the legandary ending of dragon ball then goes down hill from there, especially after the freiza saga.
@TreFKennedy it doesn't help how dishonestly he keeps switching audio in the original dub to empathise a point to no avail. It just dishonest. Other better newer dragonball youtubers out there are a lot more honest than this one.
@@kylerayner9167 What usual bias? For the DBZ side, I used the winners from my previous comparisons for many of the scenes to go up against the Abridged ones. As for the title, it’s just reflecting what the video is-comparing the official DBZ/Kai scenes to Abridged.
I loved abridged when I found it back in 2012. I watched it until it was over and enjoyed it. However.. they have done soem damage to the fandom. Their inside jokes are worn to death, and a great deal of current fans born after 2010 got into the series through Abridged, giving them a skewed perspective of what the franchise is
Ok, I know you're a dragon ball channel primarily. But can you please do more of these abridged vs Original series Videos? Especially Sao Abridged vs Sword Art Online. I'm really curious how you'd compare and contrast the two like you did with dbza and dbz
25:33 It's the same song, it's just DBZK uses an English Version while Abridged uses the Japanese one, infamous for "Tokusentai! Tokusentai! TOKUSENTAI!" literally translating to "Special Squadron! Special Squadron! SPECIAL SQUADRON!" Which I personally enjoy more than the "Ginyu Force is Cool" used in the English Dub of Kai. 1:10:47 If Tamashi vs Tamashi was used behind the original dub, I'd give it the point just for the yell. Also I'd argue SSJ3 is slightly more iconic than Gohan's SSJ2, considering it's why the running joke of "screaming for half an hour to get stronger" primarily stems from, alongside the fusion reborn version. 1:14:40 Another thing in favor of Abridged that once brought up may even retroactively change which you prefer, but the goofy nature of Goku and how his goofiness shines through in every other serious scene in the series elevates this even further. Goku is his normal self in Z, only putting his desire to fight when he knows if he doesn't everyone dies, however in Abridged, this moment is a baseball bat to the gut because it comes out of freaking nowhere for Goku. Not so much that it feels out of place, but just enough to show he realizes his mistakes and finally for once in his life acts like an adult to save his son. It hits so much harder than in the original because of this and I'm pretty sure every time I was the 3 Parts of Episode 70 this scene always brings me to tears. 1:20:49 *In TFS Perfect Cell's Voice because funny* Wait a fucking second... Those numbers don't line up. How do you have 30 points total and the friend have 29?? WHAT THE HELL IS THE POINT?!?!
Setting aside the blatant cherry picking and unfair representation, cutting off parts of abridged, making the moment look way less funny or impactful. Two big examples from what i've seen is Krillin's "...YEAH! ...WOO!" at Yamcha's fail, and the *ENTIRE SECOND HALF OF POINT 11!!!* "-oh... i'm sorry, i'm usually far more composed. I'm just a little bit *absolutely livid."* Emotions aside, i ranked up to what i watched 1. Abridged 2. OG 3. OG 4. Abridged ...i can't help but notice you left out piccolo's death????? 5. Abridged 6. Abridged 7. Abridged 8. OG 9. Abridged 10. Abridged 11. Abridged I stopped watching because of editing, and cuz it took you 9 entire segments to give any ground to abridged, especially the Chiaotzu one. Of all the ones to be humble, at least give it this one, like you have the same seriousness and tone in Tien, and chiaotzu's part was executed with perfect timing.
How does the Abridged version give misinformation when "Abridged" is in the title and they say it's a parody in the disclaimer at the start of every video. Clearly the ppl making the arguments are the ones who can't understand parodies. TFS actually loves Dragon ball, they made DBZA as fans FOR fans. This is even discussed in their DBZA Commentary.
You should have flipped the comparisons Show the originals, before the Abridged. So we know what they changed. Context matters. Was going to show this to a non DBZ viewer to show how DBZA enhances the original, and even improves on it but this format doesn't help convey that because you start with the parody and use the original to reconstruct it.
Dude, why is the music so loud when you are talking and explaining your decisions? Also it feels like you are very biased against dbza where the point of dbza feels to me like a play on the original we all love with humor that normally would not be there. The point is not to make the scenes more impactful but to make the scenes just an enjoyable in a different way.
There's no comparison to the original. Tfs just uses jokes most people have been using for years beforehand and throws it into this little compilation series of stolen jokes.
I still prefer Vegeta’s voice actor in TeamFourStar than Chris. I’m proud to say that. The moment Vegeta is in the water after getting punched by trunks, realizing his blood on his hand and yells rage! I feel like the team four star voice actor nailed a lot of good moments like that.
I think even Sabat himself once said in the past that he would consider having Lanipator be his successor as Vegeta if anything were to happen to him. Gotta respect Chris, he is at least a bit more likeable than egotistical Schemmel.
Good Video. If you ever think of remaking this or fixing some mistakes please do future gohans death and future trunks reaction to finding him i feel like both could be close in comparison.
db anime is a shit compared to the manga which is a masterpiece, a lot of time wasting, filler ecc. so in terms of watching a series, abriged win all the time for me
Okay we get it you like the DBZ version better. I understand that there's no school like the old school but you got to give it some points where it's needed lol
so vegeta was not waeker than goku in his base form he just accepted the loss because it broke his pride that he knew a technique that defeated him just like the super sayjajin form that vegeta wanted to be so bad but kakkarot turned out to be the 1st.
Oh, I just noticed that. Yeah, I had to go back and change/rewrite the script a little at certain parts so there could definitely be mistakes I didn't catch.
I don't know if this is going to get me shot around here or not but I like the Ocean dub up to the Ginyu Force including the first three movies. Most of it is that it uses the original OST. I don't really like the Ocean or funiamation dubs until Trunks arrives for the whole Ginyu till the end of Freeza arch. The funimation version of Trunks is clearly better than Ocean. All three of them drag pretty bad but at least TFS is funny the other two just have extreme pacing issues. The strange thing a bunch individual scenes in all four of them have merits.
I think it shoyldve been an abriged vs. kai completely even tho the majority of it is kai, but in the few scenes that was z, it should've been kai cuse kai is just so much better. Also, kai vs z should be next!!

The difference between you and your friend.
He values the comedy, you value depth.
Both totally valid. I confess I love the original. But abridged I have watched over and over in my 20s the because in my youth I needed epic, in older age I need more laughter
"The fucks a Kami?" "It means God now bow!"
i enjoyed this vid alot but just a suggestion, it seems a little unfair to put both dbz and dbz kai against dbza, as well as picking either a moment from z or kai against abridged because where one official version may fail the other version could have an edge against the one abridged version
That's fair. I did want to include the winners for some scenes from my dbz vs kai videos, so that's why I did it that way, but I can see what you're saying.
Yeah, and also, some people consider Kai to be different enough to be separate from the normal dbz, and consider dbs to continue from Kai while the normal dbz is followed by GT, and that's why GT stopped being canon to some
Nah abridged made it more funny, but also made it more weird
What a bewildering comparison. I don't really like Abridged at this point but I think it's pretty unfair to compare a goofy stupid parody that sometimes moves the plot forward to the actual show. Especially given early TFS' much more limited editing, mic quality and VA experience and you're comparing it to KAI, let alone old Z.
He just doesn’t like abridged at all!
abridged is funny but in no way a proper version of dbz and mischaracterizes many key ppl like goku and whatnot.
That said I looove abridged
In the end TFS is garbage.
@@TheIrishRushinBait used to be believable. Like even your profile description is obvious bait like come on man!
@@themedic7933 Who reads profiles? Spending your whole day looking at profiles is something else.
I kinda maybe watched Abridged before the original, in fact, I still haven't seen it
no buu bits?
You're docking abridged points because it's not being serious, the whole point of abridged parody, it's to be funny, that's like comparing a Raptor to a Corvette and docking the Raptor cuz it's lap time was slower on the road course because it's built for off road
Nice video!
It was so sweet, how you always included the thoughts of your friend :)
I’m from the hood and I feel Abridged just hit better.
I never would expect him to do the Dragon Ball Abridged opening
Lol I just wanted to include it in this video
in your final flash scene you of the original DBZ with falconers track you still had cell screaming "Oh Shit" instead of "Whats this" best version of that scene by far
Sean disliked this video. 😂
Why is this a comparison? The Abridged series is a parody, they state so at the beginning of every episode.
AMAZING WORK CHAMPP!!
Thank you!!
You missed out better scenes by using Kai instead of DBZ. Like Goku's I Am Speech or Vegeta killing Android 19, they were way better than Kai
The special remix TFS made exclusively for the Final Flash is amazing
Dragon ball abridged is unironically lightyears better than OG DBZ
If I had to put it a way it would be this,
Season 1 of abridged had funny jokes and stuff but it felt more like TH-cam poops, just jokes not real feeling or writing just funny well written jokes, but then the namek arc and forward tfs nails it so good freaza feels real Evil while being funny, jokes in combat, almost gave it realism, then in season 3 tfs flies with story telling, jokes, emotion, this makes you really like these characters.
YOURE EITHER PERFECT OR YOURE NOT ME
abridged gets progressively better as the series goes on. dragon ball z starts out a masterpeice, continuing the legandary ending of dragon ball then goes down hill from there, especially after the freiza saga.
Please do not take this the wrong way but when you popped up in the beginning my first thought was,
Hey look it's, totally not mark abridged.
Should have been DragonBall Z ( Og Funimation dub) Vs Abridged, i Deride Kai 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
😂 True
@TreFKennedy it doesn't help how dishonestly he keeps switching audio in the original dub to empathise a point to no avail. It just dishonest. Other better newer dragonball youtubers out there are a lot more honest than this one.
@@kylerayner9167 What do you mean lmao? What point am I trying to make?
@KeyReviewsOfficial Also, while you're at lol, change the title of your video so at least viewers can see an honest video without the usual bias?
@thomashost272 yea, that's what I meant by it being different
Goku on preview: -You are goddamn right!!!
Setting aside the blatant cherry picking and unfair representation, cutting off parts of abridged, making the moment look way less funny or impactful. Two big examples from what i've seen is Krillin's "...YEAH! ...WOO!" at Yamcha's fail, and the *ENTIRE SECOND HALF OF POINT 11!!!*
"-oh... i'm sorry, i'm usually far more composed. I'm just a little bit *absolutely livid."*
Emotions aside, i ranked up to what i watched
1. Abridged
2. OG
3. OG
4. Abridged
...i can't help but notice you left out piccolo's death?????
5. Abridged
6. Abridged
7. Abridged
8. OG
9. Abridged
10. Abridged
11. Abridged
I stopped watching because of editing, and cuz it took you 9 entire segments to give any ground to abridged, especially the Chiaotzu one. Of all the ones to be humble, at least give it this one, like you have the same seriousness and tone in Tien, and chiaotzu's part was executed with perfect timing.
Guys im starting to think he doesn’t actually have a friend
Pinned comment
Abridged gives people misinformation about dragon ball, and people making random arguments everywhere, talking about nonsense
Yeah? Well your face is forbidden.
Both are Good
Gohan’s transformation in abridged had the English version remake of Unmei no hi
I just love Vegeta word choice in Dragon Ball
You should have flipped the comparisons Show the originals, before the Abridged. So we know what they changed. Context matters. Was going to show this to a non DBZ viewer to show how DBZA enhances the original, and even improves on it but this format doesn't help convey that because you start with the parody and use the original to reconstruct it.
likely DBZA, to DB fans DBZ is a shitty adaptation of the manga
Are you stupid
“I’m sorry, kaio-what?” -like 15 different characters in Abridged
Original scenes (even kai) are way too long than necessary. So glad, DBZA cut them down a lot
This white boy just loves his kai doesn't he? Although I'm visibly salty over the choices, his friend calmed the nerves with his superior taste.
😂 abridged is good but not better than z/kai
DBZ KAI: 2/10
DBZA: 10/10
Kai glazing is real in this video
In the Arabic version on spacetoon he said I have tasted you the taste of humiliation and defeat 36:01
This seems like such a dumb comparison to make. You can't really say which is better when they are setting out to accomplish such different things.
db anime is a shit compared to the manga which is a masterpiece, a lot of time wasting, filler ecc. so in terms of watching a series, abriged win all the time for me
Dragon ball abridged is a joke.
Dragon ball z is LEGENDARY HEARTH SOUL AND EPIC
Do you know if you'll go over the z movies as well as buu for comparing as well?
Okay we get it you like the DBZ version better. I understand that there's no school like the old school but you got to give it some points where it's needed lol
I did lol
Naruto unhinged versus OG Naruto lol
Masako X did us amazing 👏
so vegeta was not waeker than goku in his base form he just accepted the loss because it broke his pride that he knew a technique that defeated him just like the super sayjajin form that vegeta wanted to be so bad but kakkarot turned out to be the 1st.
Yamcha's here!
-YAMCHA'S DEAD!!!
Great video but you made a couple mistakes during the video, especially when you mentioned the Super Sayain transformation as Kai instead of Z lol.
Oh, I just noticed that. Yeah, I had to go back and change/rewrite the script a little at certain parts so there could definitely be mistakes I didn't catch.
Im saying this as the Ginyu Force's named is first mentioned.
Abridged should win every o ne of these.
No question.
I always stick to the original for more characters, lore, and world building.
10 minutes in. I assume you like Kai and your mate likes Abridged?
Lmao, I get abridged points, but yes
I think it shoyldve been an abriged vs. kai completely even tho the majority of it is kai, but in the few scenes that was z, it should've been kai cuse kai is just so much better. Also, kai vs z should be next!!
@duplex-stool i already made several videos on kai vs z. I have a playlist for it if you want to check it out
