Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.
Hands down, this is the best Ling Cod tackle video out there! Any day fishing with you brother would be awesome? I have a lot of the same gear, but showing the action underwater can really help a lot of anglers step up their Ling game! Great job!
Another awesome video nice shout out to Michael Chicon with custom jigz4u. I’ve been working with that guy for over a year now and finally meet him at the more than fishing tournament. Way to support your local jig makers. Keep up the great work.
I don’t even saltwater fish, I’m a bass fisherman, but this was such an interesting video. I like to open up my content and learn about other types of fishing. Awesome video ish, I love seeing your videos!
Hello I'm new to your fishing TH-cam channel 👍🎣 I love Pier fishing I also use the spoons and the metal iron jigs I also fish swim baits but not as big as the ones you have what size oz swim baits are they
Years ago nothing can beat a lead filled painted hot orange on both ends was a copper pipe jig , if it hung up on the bottom you,re really not losing a bunch of cash and big rockfish and lingcod really went nuts over them .
tysm for explaining all those crazy lures. as a new person to fishing ---- lures are just innumerable, and it's hard to see why a fish would jab at them, until you try to picture the lure in water, what kind of water, etc... great video!!! happy fishing............
The shimano flat fall jigs are made to jig in condition that don't allow vertical jigging. Means these jigs work good in fast drift.one of my favorite jig when the drift is fast....
Ish missed the slug and eel type swimbaits (versus paddletails), These are effective just dropping down without casting. I agree, very thoughful presentation.
Those flat falls are killers caught some huge rock fish over at st. Nick island. I haven’t tried the 🐊 jigs I’ll try try them this year. My favorites Art the flat falls and the large plastics with a heavy lead head sometimes current is harsh. But I’ll try those crocks next month rock fish season stars. Nice video
Didn't mention the idea of pre-tied Flour leaders. Can pre-tie and then add to snap swivel, some times saves time others well not so much. I'd suggest maybe 20lb and 1-2 ft leaders.
Perfect timing Ish! We’re planning to head down to Santa Cruz on Sunday and rent a skiff. Crossing my fingers for decent conditions. Bringing my nephews for their first time. Loaded up on jigs at the Sportsman Expo lolz
This brought back a lot of memories for me ! Back in the day in the Bay, we would take the party boat, "The Cobra". Twin engine 90 ft long monster! Get us to the Soap Bank, The Pimple and The Farallon Islands. At the island he would back up to the shallow water 10' to 15' to hit the cabbies and lings. That was a blast. And for deep water, we used the Scampi Jig in root beer and the Hex Bar both 16 oz to 32 oz size. Don't fish this way anymore, can't handle the seasickness. That's for you younger guys! Like your gear and Thanks Again!😀
Awesome breakdown of options for people targeting groundfish. Good way to kick off the season! Only made it onto a skiff a half dozen times last year but had a blast every time.
Always interesting to see what people use in different areas. Up here in Vancouver Island Canada we use much bigger lures for the big lingcod. Not that you can't catch rock fish and ling on the swimbaits you mentioned but we use swimbaits like "megabite" swimbaits that are about 3 to 4 times that size. Also the jigs I've used are heavier as well as often the small lures as you rightly mentioned can have a hard time getting to the bottom in current. Overall fun video to watch and good discriptions of what types of rigs/lures to use when.
The westin sand dab is deadly out at the farralon islands where some big lings hang out - the other westins for trophy lings I'd recommend are the crazy daisy 430 gram in the fancy cola color, lively & glow gadus & the robocod - this last 1 mocks a juvenile salmon & they hammer it - beef up your leader to a 60 or even 80 lb for teeth. I bought the Bobs big boy too but havent used it yet its a ft & a half long. I also wanted to HIGHLY recommend another spro bucktail Ive had nothing but success with. 1 oz (for its thicker hk) the 1/2 oz & 3/4 oz both hammer both lings & rockcod but Ive straightened a few of these hks on bigger vermillion (which love the gold chrome color pattern) so I called Spro & a very helpful guy told me the exact hooks used in each size. 1 oz & up are beefier stout hooks. Trying the 1 oz & 2 oz sizes next trip. I always hook a squid head (just the head) right between the eyes onto this bucktail so it trails in-line & adds volume, movement & scent & it never lets me down - the biggest plus - lings slam it too. I put 2 of these onto a home made 6 ft double dropper loop set up of 60 lb fluoro & I always get hit immediately after hitting bottom w this set up (if there is any bite at all). The whole rig to make is under $12.00. I also put a drop or 2 of super glue onto the whipping which holds the bucktail in place because they really do hit these things hard & can cut the thread w their teeth. Leader: 6 ft mono, double dropper loops at 2' & 4', & the top & bottom get triple overhand loop knots - less hardware. I also always add bloody tuna scent to mask any scent I may add in handling. A 12 oz torpedo weight shoots em down to the bottom b4 the rest on the party boat & that can make a very big difference.
enjoyed thankyou. on some of your lures you have a double hook setup, is that polycord snelled onto the hooks and covered with shrinkwrap? Thanks again!
The biggest lingcod I ever caught was a hitchhiker. I caught a nice black rockfish on a shrimp rig and the ling chomped down on the rockfish and wouldn't let go. I won the pot for the biggest catch of the day AND got the black as well.
Looks good. I'm planning on fishing by the rocks and catch some Lingcods, Greenling, and hopefully some Rockfish. My Son in law got our licenses and ready to go.
Great video Ish, almost tired of the stripers... taking out the yaks down here around Monterey Saturday... woo hoo! Screw Xmas, THIS is the most wonderful time of the year!
Current doesn’t really matter if you cast towards the direction you’re drifting and give it a chance to sink. Once it’s under the boat, rinse and repeat. It’s also a good way to get to spots before the boat gets over it along with everyone else. And for the love of god, don’t use these jigs on a charter boat if you don’t know what you’re doing as you likely end up in multiple tangles.
Most informative video on rockfish and lingcod! 👍🏽 Can you please do a video on just lingcod gear? I have been trying to catch lingcod awhile now I have caught a couple but only know to throw my big 250 gram flat fall glow and BIG swimbaits
thx man! this basically covers lingcod too, they'll hit the bigger stuff shown. tbh, the best, surefire way to catch a big ling is to live line a live blue rockfish. want me to post a vid on that technique?🤔
Ish With Fish thank you very much. I’m taking this winter to gear up and learn more about the sport. My entire family is already loving it. I appreciate what you share and seeing the jigs in the water is very helpful

you can if you cut one shrimp off. in ca's sf sm counties, 2 hook maximum when targeting rockfish when you already have a rockfish in possession.

Where are you fishing that you need that heavy of a cannon ball? We only use 2-4 oz
if you charter to the farallons, 1-2 lb lead balls are common.
I like the underwater video, it helps to see how these lures works and looks like underwater , compare just saying imitating a dying bait fish
yup, everyone describes the action, but i wanted to show it. fun to see what actually happens underwater!
What size of swim baits and what size lead head?
Can I use a surface iron that's kinda heavy for rock fish? If feels like 4oz or 5oz and it's flat one side and the other round
i tried those, they don't seem to work. better off with a butterfly jig👍🏼
Hi Ish! Is it legal to put a Jighead Swimbait on a Shrimp Fly rig in CA? Please and thanks!
sup man! totally legal, only rule for targeting groundfish is 1 rod 2 hooks max when you have one in possession.
so make sure you only have one shrimp fly hook on the line if you decide to clip on a jighead swimbait.
Hello Ish, whats the best snap swivel you would recommend for rock fishing?
go with a 70lb tactical anglers clip👍🏼
The Diawa sk zebra jig now many grams is that one ?
5-6 oz version 👌🏽
When using lures...do you recommend just tying it to main line? Or throw it on a dropper loop with a weight?
i use a 4' 30lb fluoro leader for snag resistance, minimize braid cutting on reef.
where can I find that giant sanddab jig?!?!?
Would you kindly show how to fish lingcod in salt water? Thanks.
hi, I have lots of lingcod videos, check out my rockfish playlist👍
Hi Ish, what size P Line Diamond jig were you using? Also how many grams was the SK jig?
Yo Ish! I have a few rockfish trips this year and wanted to try the daiwa zebra jig, what size you running?
I'm using the 6-7 oz ones in 180' waters 👍
Thanks for the quick response, looking forward to the next video!
Has the 1lb dab ever landed what you wanted ? Ballparking here, but is that like $28?
a couple swipes but never a true hookup. my friend caught a 20lb with the same one though. yup, it was about $30 at West Marine.

Good on you for the reply. It’s appreciated. Excellent breakdown of the spectrum of gear for the occasional angler.
Nice job,,,thanks
What is the name of that red and white big hammer swimbait ? Any body knows!!
that color is usually called 'candy cane', use that term when you search for it👍🏼
Thank you for this video, can you recommend a website to buy the Swimbait heads? Or manufacturer
cool, np. i get my heads from West Marine near me, but you can find them on ebay/amazon too. look for listings that use Mustad hooks.
What good video friend
First!!!! Rockfish Season!
yeayuh let's go!
@@ishwithfish when are you planning never been on a boat bro!?
Damn, I thought I had a lot of lures for ling cod
i'll prob take the kayak first few months, gotta dial that in. then hit up Native Anglers when the weather warms up.
lol yeah i've tried everything the last few years and got enough footage to compile the ultimate review :)
Where can I get the rig at 15:05. I can't find it anywhere
check the description, i included the email of the local fisherman who ties and ships them👍🏼
Super video
Great video, though it would have been cool if you covered some rigs for bank fishing!
doh, you're right! i only focused on vertical jigging. maybe ill retitle video to clarify🤔
@@ishwithfish Maybe, but anyway great video man! Appreciate the good content!
