What a masterpiece from Guru Dutt exposing the society 60+ years ago and it's relevant today too...A man is only valued when he is gone while he is alive every tries to trample him...Such true lines....Rafi Sahab brought life to Guru Dutt direction with his beautiful rendition.

Guru Dutt, a true artist who never got the recognition in his lifetime but now hailed as one of the top director. Hope no one tries a remake of his films. It can not be done properly. He was sensitive person, that's why he created these masterpieces.
I don't agree with you....his movies were high grossers at that time also... expect kagaz ke phool.... but that is ok cuz every artist have some high as well as low point.

Wow... the scene where the mother is crying for her child, and they won’t let her stop dancing.. and the camera turns to Guru crying. That is so powerful. He was a thinker, a very thoughtful and genuine artist. He wasn’t just a businessman trying to make a quick buck. He lived for his art.

This was true incident in his life. In fact, when he was researching for this film, he went to one such performance and experienced this. He gave money he had to lady and came back, and kept the same scene in the movie

सच में,बहुत ही अच्छी फ़िल्म है।"गुरु दत्त साहब" अभिनय कर रहे थें,लग ही नहीं रहा था टूटे हुए दिल का दर्द मुख रुपी दर्पण,में स्पष्ट देखा जा सकता था।
यह फ़िल्म आज के समय में भी प्रासंगिक है।
समाज की कड़वी सच्चाई को बहुत ही सुंदर तरीके से पेश किया गया है।
अंत में,फ़िल्म प्यासा देखने की प्यास अब नहीं बुझेगी..😊😊

Being a South Indian, I must agree this is the best film I have ever seen (I have seen a lot many) and for me, it is the finest Indian film (even better than some great Bengali films) till date. Kudos to Guru Dutt and all those involved in the film and Kudos to old bollywood

we lost Guru Dutt too early in 1964, when he was just 39 years old. He would have made many more masterpeices like PYASA, KAGAZ KE PHOOL, CID, HOWRAH BRIDGE, SAHIB BIWI AUR GHULAM, BAAZ etc.

What tregedy that the legend Gurudutt expired at an early age. Pyasa is master piece. Every one must see this film
This is cinema. Indian cinema. Guru Dutt was such a perfectionist. And way way way ahead of his time. Every role was played perfectly. Gulaabo's (Waheeda Rehman) selfless love is commendable. And my favourite part is when Vijay denies his identity. He was a man who lived truly for his art, in reel as well as in real life. Also, Sachin da's melody and Sahir Luchianvi's poetry is absolutely fantastic.
Thank you Guru Dutt, we owe you a lifetime.
Those were the golden days when cinema was preserved with such works of artists like Guru Dutt . Society never understands the purity of art .
But even back then, this movie could not appeal to the masses or the elite, who only enjoyed frivolous masala movies in India. Love Guru Dutt - a master director, actor and a gentleman. RIP

you are missing the singers and the dialogue writers and the director as well. when passionate legends come together then a masterpiece is created because they pour their mind, heart , body and soul in their work.
I remember watching this film for the first time when it came on British TV back in the 80s. I was very young and obviously had no idea to the depth of this masterpiece. Today,after watching Gangubai I was reminded of the song,jinhe naaz he hind par, hence I'm watching it once again after more than 30 years...
Guru dutt sahib was a gem of a human.
Reminds of my late father who looked very similar to him in his young days...

Pyaasa is the Citizen Kane of Indian Cinema. A timeless classic! No one captured Waheeda Rahman's luminosity like the great Guru Dutt.❤
Yes Waheeda was very well captured by Guru Dutt and later by Vijay anand in Guide. She is superb actress. Satyajit Ray also used her in one of his movies and commented that she was very fine actress (see his book "Our films their films") From the golden era I think she was best actress. Nelfix should have done documentary on her and guru Dutt while she is alive instead of the Yash Chopra one -- Yash C movies are decent to good to very good movies but none a masterpiece.

I still remember those days when my brother and I used to come from school in the evening and we used to listen old songs on TV. Just randomly, one day all of a sudden, we heard the song "Jaane wo kaise log they jinke"😍 Ohhh God...we had liked this song back then sooo much that both of us used to hum its tune and lyrics all the time❤️ I was in 7th or 8th standard at that time. Though I always loved listening to old songs since my childhood days, I had never ever planned to watch this movie Pyaasa. But 2-3 days back, I was going through some poetries of Ahmed Faraz on TH-cam and in recommendations I got, "Kabhi Kabhi mere Dil mein - A love tale of Sahir Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam" 😳I was literally surprised to see that. I've been reading their poetries and lyrics since a very long time, but I never knew that they were fond of each other❤️ After knowing their amazing and beautiful love story, since 2 days I've literally been searching for all their videos and because of that somehow I came to know that Both the movies, Kabhi Kabhi and Pyaasa are based on the life Sahir Ludhianvi. So I'm here❤️ What do I say about this movie yaar... It's such a wonderful film❤️ I was all set to cry at the end for Waheeda Rehman's role..but thankfully Vijay entered and asked her to come along with him😍 Is movie me waise to saare characters ki acting bohot achhi thi❤️ Par Gulabo ne to Sharaafat, Mohabbat aur Insaaniyat ki bas had hi kar di❤️❤️❤️ I really liked the songs, Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo and Jinhe Hind pe naaz hai wo kahan hain❤️ Baat ban gayi and Ye duniya mil bhi jaaye are also amazing❤️ Ang laga lo song me jab Gulab Vijay ko dekh kar bhi wapas laut jaati hai, that scene just touched my heart.. A deep meaning is hidden behind that❤️ The cinematography is really awesome.. Especially that beggar's scene🙌🏼 The way everything has been portrayed, that's just commendable. Truly way ahead of its time❤️ I was thinking to watch only half of the movie now and the remaining part tomorrow, but this film was so so so beautiful that I couldn't resist myself watching it completely at once❤️ In every sense, this movie is truly a MASTERPIECE❤️ Right from Sahir Ludhianvi to Guru Dutt ji, each and every person has done a splendid job❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ It's been almost 63 years since this movie got released, but my heart says, People from every generation who understand the true meaning of Art and Literature, will surely come across this beautiful movie one day. May be today.. May be tomorrow.. May be 20 years later.. but they will surely come and watch this wonderful film.

Well the story of pyaasa is actually based on the story written by Guru Dutt which is also available in market in 1948. But the love story Vijay and Gulabo in film is assumed to have some elements from sahir and amrita's failed relationship.

I have first watched this film while in class 7 in 1959, thereafter some 20times & resumed first lock down in April, 2020& today 31st July 2021. Posters were flooded GuruDutt "Pyasa" during 1959,60% 1960s! GuruDutt one of most talented directors of the time!!!
