Budget Kitchen Update Part 5 | Refacing Base Cabinets

  • I finished refacing the base cabinets in our kitchen 6 months ago and I think it’s still my favorite project. NOT because it was fun. It was not. But it did enable a dramatic transformation for the cost of mdf, bondo, and paint. These cabinets were outdated and horribly scratched up, but also built in place and functioning beautifully.
I spent months agonizing over the color. My friend Jesse is an interior designer and she helped me figure it out. She reassured me that keeping the wood trim could look great as long as I stayed in the right color family and suggested Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee for the beadboard and a green for the base cabinets so I could just leave the formica countertops and linoleum floors as long as I need to. Jesse is a genius. Her link is below if you want a consultation. I put lots of greens up to test and fell in love with Benjamin Moore Essex green. It’s not historic, but I’m good with that.
I started by just doing one drawer so I could learn what not to do. I’m now realizing that for the amount of time I put into this, I could perhaps have made new cabinet doors the proper way (MaCenna did it!). But I also love that we’re making use of these sturdy materials.

Those cabinets look amazing. I was skeptical at first, but I think now that it's perfection. Your choice of that specific shade of green is right on point. Just beautiful!

Wow. Impressive amount of work. So are you assembling your own router table??

Thank you! I'm definitely planning to build a router table when I can no longer resist the urge to redo the pantry cabinets :)

Wow! You did an awesome job! Looks great! I myself have painted all
My kitchen cabinets. I know how much work it takes. But the end results makes it worth it. And the green actually looks pretty close to a historical color. Also love your antique island with the light fixture above. Have you ever hear of A Primitive Place magazine?? It’s wonderful and so inspiring. I get a lot of my decorating inspiration from it. Highly recommend!! 🤎
