    To be extra clear: The Zendikar Rising Commander decks only had 3 original card designs, but by Kaldheim these $19.99 Commander decks had increased to 8 new card designs. These ONE Commander decks only have 10 original designs. This reduction from 15 began with Dominaira United.

      The starter decks/kaldheim decks and zendikar rising decks have been the best precons bar none.
      The "normal" commander precons have routinely been some of the worst experiences I've had playing the game as a casual player. They are overly complex and tend to really go hard on gimmicks that need upgrades to work well. They also seem to require a few playthroughs to get a grasp on. When you only play every now and then, these slog games stick out like a sore thumb. Huge turnoffs for your friends that are familiar with magic and want to play.
      The normal commander precons and their designed for commander cards have completely modified the format away from whatever EDH was and sheldon thinks it is. Anyone that thinks WOTC isn't fully in control of the format is naive beyond belief. It's really starting to resesmble all the other constructed formats I dont want to play.
      EDH and the philosophy are dead.
      Long live WOTC Commander

      Two of the five decks I own are based on the Kaldheim commanders Lathril and Ranar. I've bought other precons over the years, but they've all been long since stripped for parts by now. Great value, great design. Lathril is maybe a little degenerate when it gets going, but hey elves gonna ball.

    • @YouandWhoseArmy
      @YouandWhoseArmy ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@EliyaSelhub I was really blown away how fun these decks generally were. Aesi was a weird one where it was perfect for causal players, but the commander is a generically bad design for established players. I could see him being oppressive built properly but as a precon it was a great intro design. Easy to feel like you're doing something and it def built to a win. Jinra Kudro? HA!
      The few precons I've bought have also been stripped for parts and I find them to be supremely uninteresting now. The fact that they tend to constantly modify the core concepts of the format makes me really, really dislike them. I realized that I play very few designed for commander cards in my custom decks.
      I think they should build more starter decks with reprints and less precons that change the format irreversibly forever with cards that never get banned.

    • @EliyaSelhub
      @EliyaSelhub ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YouandWhoseArmy power creep is inevitable in eternal formats. Tarmagoyf was a powerhouse in modern, Deadeye Navigator was the big boogeyman in EDH, now they're barely playable. They have to sell products. Sometimes they go too far but generally I've been fine with their new designs, but your mileage may vary. The good news is you can still build a powerful deck within whatever limitations you set for yourself.

      Where do you usually buy cards? I can't seem to find much in the way of magic cards where I live (Saskatoon), first place to check would obviously be game stores but they've only got a weirdly random selection and it's all overpriced. I would begrudgingly then go buy cards on Amazon but the shipping cost is ridiculous. I feel like Canada is grossly under-served when it comes to magic, buying stuff from wizards directly costs easy too much and I can't seem to find the cards in stores, when I do I have the same problem of inflated prices. I've bought almost no new magic cards over the past couple years because it's been so bad. Maybe BC or Ontario has larger users bases so they've got stores that can serve players better.

    I feel like the poison deck suffers from the same problem that decks like the Shorikai and mutate decks suffered from. To stick to the theme they want they had to focus on cards that only fit in that narrow deck type, in this case an infect/toxic theme. If you look at infect decks and balance it would be tricky to balance the deck while trying to fit in high value reprints used in infect decks (skittles, blightsteel, and triumph of the hordes being notable ones). Most other infect cards that would be looked at are worth pennies.

    I was SHOCKED when I found myself preferring the design of the Boros equipment/tokens deck, a style I usually dislike, over the Abzan deck. I find the Abzan deck is pretty parasitic, and already very tight and narrow in it's focus, so upgrading the deck seems very streamlined and doesn't provide a whole lot of options to change the gameplan of the deck with the commanders provided.
    Otharri is definitely my favorite commander from the whole set, really cool and aggressive take on experience counters with a fantastic recursion ability to bypass the commander tax. Can be used in a token strategy (obviously) but also an aggravated assault strategy, can get massive with equipment and auras that he stronger the more creatures you control, or even as a rebel tribal leader. Really cool card on all levels.

      SAME. I was very intent on discarding the boros to focus on the shiny poison deck, and then I looked at the deck list and thought... damn, that's and actually VERY cool whiny white token, slapping a white dominus in there would make the deck even better.
      The most surprising part of that deck was how it didn't AT ALL focus on what I thought would be the deck core, thos "For Mirrodin" equipment. There's barely any in that deck, but it's okay since these cards are rather common and cheap anyway.

I end up waiting to buy the singles since they often are much more affordable in my budget. Would be a fun idea to see a video that discusses specific commander decks prices and grades in present day compared to the release day too. Keep up the great work and critical evaluations!

    The average price for a new commander deck in Australia is generally $70AUD each, with some stores selling them in bundles with a discount ($100 for a pair, higher price for a 4-5 deck set depending), so it's seldom worth it but generally stores here don't discount stuff unless it's had terrible sales.

    I would´ve maybe added a reprint of contagion engine for the poison deck, since it has contagion clasp and it would maybe serve as an incentive for players to build something like a hapatra deck using some of these cards.

    I'll admit that I'm still really new to MTG, but having started with a borrowed deck, moving to Mishra's Burnished Banner, and having bought Corrupting Influence, I'm really looking forward to the idea of building a better deck with them as bases. I've had fun, and that's all I really care about.

  • @Gnusseable

    I fortunately found them cheaper than this in my home country, and I must say, I think they are probably some of the most fun precons out there. Played two matches these last two days and the first was won by Corruption Influence and the other was won by Rebellion Rising. One last match will determine which one is best, I guess, but my conclusion is that they are incredibly fun and probably some of the best precons I have tried. I feel the exact same way you do, Prof: It feels bad to say that they aren't worth their price in value, seeing as they are incredibly fun to play.

    I got my Ixhel deck for $55 CAD (before trade-ins), about $41 USD. Perfectly reasonable for me. I don't care too much about the financial value of a deck, thankfully. I wanted a unique and interesting deck, particularly with a Phyrexian theme, and I got that with Corrupting Influence!
    I also got the borderless Vraska, Betrayal's Sting in my collector sample pack, which is at $30 USD on tcgplayer right now so I lucked into some huge value and a card that is perfect for the deck itself! (I also got a showcase foil Necrogen Rotpriest which isn't worth much, but still synergizes with the deck.)
    Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

    I agree with the Professor. And i wish i could follow his advice not to buy now, but in my country they are rare and prices will never go down. Even stryxhaven at our local club is still full price. That being said, for me its the fun of these precons which matters. I am not a sweaty andy anymore, but care for fun only. Hence i play only with a limited group of people avoiding the rest. They are good for this. But yeah, last time i buy precons, plus the necrons if i can find them. The money will go for more...solid decks, even if limit is 100 euro/deck. But yeah, i look at fun. Can't put a price on that

  • @Mil89GR
    @Mil89GR ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Once again, thank you professor for the review. Both decks look very interesting to play. As for why "Phyrexian influence" has low value , I can take some guesses : the first and foremost is that most good infect and toxic cards are costing over 5£ and 15£ and some others are too good for what they do and they are a bit expensive themselves ( I am looking at you Skiithrix). My other guess is that infect-toxic-poison counters is not something that lot of people want to fight against, and this is why Wizards made the deck "weaker" and undervalued on purpose. Plus, the deck also is missing the blue mana colour and some great proliferate cards (both old and new) are in the blue colour.

    • @underscore_5450
      @underscore_5450 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I thinks it's sad that Ixhel and Vishgraz probably lost their blue because Wotc doesn't wanna make more 4 color commanders. But them and lots of cards from their deck slot in perfectly in my Atraxa deck so I'll probably get it anyways to support my LGS over ordering the singles from Card Kingdom.

    • @billdoetsch
      @billdoetsch ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's probably paying the Phyrexian tax. It's popular so they don't have to make it as enticing otherwise.

    Idk i bought the corrupting precon at my lgs for $40 and its the first precon i bought since 2014. Its alot of fun to play so the value in a fun precon is there for me, at $40 or lower. Sometimes its less about the card value and more about the fun value

    • @underscore_5450
      @underscore_5450 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I know the value is important to some players but it's not like I'm buying decks to sell piece by piece on the secondary market. I'm buying them to play them and add the cards to my collection. Ignoring lands, more than half the cards in the Ixhel deck are on my buy list for my Atraxa deck so I'm probably just gonna bite the bullet and call it a donation to my LGS. I feel better giving money to a smaller LGS over buying singles from Card Kingdom or something anyways but that's just me.

    • @WeaponXYZ

      The issue in value is more that for 45$ the power of these precons are lacking compared to others in the price range. Once these decks hit around 30$ then they would be a good buy.

    He chose Rebellion Rising.
    Playing my first few games, I had so much fun cooking up a token swarm and beat down. And I'm already thinking of cards to tweak and improve.

    Speaking pure flavor designing new art for each card that would match the set would go along way. Or at the very least add in either the panorama or Phyrexian lands instead of the draft lands. Anyway I'm putting the poison counter one on my Christmas watchlist. There is a good chance it'll be less than $20.00 lol.

    • @Pers0n97
      @Pers0n97 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funnily enough, since the "draft lands" are now out of both draft and set boosters (which have the panorama and metal lands now), they are actually the rarer version of the basic lands on that set (ignoring the oil slick ofc).
      IIRC you can only get these lands from the commanders and the One bundle now.

    • @High5748
      @High5748 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Pers0n97 Wow I didn't know they took them out of the draft boxes. I figured they were mainly meant for pre-release considering the three different versions of basic lands. That is funny to think about though.

    • @Pers0n97
      @Pers0n97 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@High5748 Yeah, it's a very strange move to be honest, especially when it could have turned these Panorama & Metal lands into new "cool and somewhat expensive" baselands for people to pimp their decks with into... the basic lands of that set.

    I got Corrupting influence for 35,-€ and am currently coming from a meet up.
    I played it 5 times, won twice and got close to wining twice (on the fith game they knocked me out first).
    It was very tense since everyone had to balance my poison and the thread of the other better decks.
    Even with, sometimes, little mana the Deck played suprisingly well.
    My personal MVP is Norn's Decree, if you can drop it early on, most players will avoid attacking you to not get hit by other players for the card draw.
    And as long as a player doesn't have a Poison counter, they can safely ignore it, so it can stay on the field for several turns.

    Normally when theres chase cards in a precon, i always pick it up, because i love having a collection of cards that all go together, and i love opening the decks! and normally with clever concealment and flawless maneuver, i would have picked up rebellion rising for the same reason...
    but other than those 2 chase cards, theres nothing else in the deck with any value at all, its actually cheaper just to buy the non bulk cards than it is to get the decks themselves

    Among other things, I think Corrupted Influence faces a problem in that it’s designing for a niche play style. Looking through ONE and co’s new cards, a lot cared about poison counters. And good for the environment and infect players looking for love after a decade, but it’s not widely wanted by other decks. And these new cards should finally help infect players. It’s probably going to be a long time before they get such obvious support. I think the value could have been helped with some good reprints. Deadly rollick, as another commenter said, would have been a good include.

    I got the corrupting influence one because it had a lot of poison stuff, altogether during prerelease weekend, and I was planning on upgrading it into a poison bugs thing with vishgraz, the alternate commander.
    While the pricing is "cheap" the availability of the cards inside wasn't really... because of a lot of them being over 10 years old, like the infect creatures.
    The upfront cost is bad though.
