My LGS is doing a cool thing with these. They are starting a Commander deck league, where you start with one of these (randomly assigned to each participant). As you play with them and accumulate points, you are given the opportunity at certain threshholds to purchase packs and add any cards you get from them into your deck. The league is still in development but I look forward to participating in it!

Pokemon Trading Card Game Online also has a Theme format where only unmodified Theme Decks (that's what the Pokémon Company calls their precons) are legal. I have always been wondering why other TCGs don't have similar formats. With the abundance of edh precons this could be a really fun thing if enough people go with it.
Also no more whining about wrong power level estimates or combos deemed to cheap. If Wizards put it in, it's fair game!

I'm actually really happy that these decks exist. I always wanted to get my dad a commander deck so we could play together, but I wanted to get him something less complex than some of the other precons, nor did I want to spend the money on something he'd never use. @@STVMcarbondragon I was in a 10-player Commander game once, too. Each person was assigned a guild (I got my least favorite - Azorius). We had two players on opposite sides taking simultaneous turns with range of influence 2 to speed things up. It was like having two 5-player games going until people started getting eliminated and the range of influence started overlapping. In the end, I won without killing a single player, simply because a guy on the opposite side milled everyone heavily before dying, and when it got down to the last two standing, my opponent only had 2 cards left in his library. It took hours and, while being an interesting experiment, isn't something I'd ever want to repeat.

If we are honest here, there are so many commander pre-cons around these days that this series doesn't stand out in any meaningful manner. The trick is to look for commanders with mechanics that don't require too much setup, those usually play rather well regardless of the cards inside. My personal favorite of recent years has been Obuun. Sold cheaply, and the commander made the deck fun all by himself.

Don't wait for the prices to drop. WotC quite conciously designs these products doing exactly the price analyses Prof. does in his videos. It's no accident they dropped MSRP, they want the "store" prices, be that online or brick&mortar, to represent secondary market value so the product will actually get to the shelves instead of being bought up and broken down at release.

I think with the increase in cardboard price, the idea of playing the game without high money cards becomes more appealing. I personally like the idea of playing more powered down decks, between me and my friends. So, to me these decks are a win. If tap lands are what my friends new to commander can afford, then I'll play tap lands. If we only have $10 a month in the budget to upgrade one, we'll do upgrades. Overall, I like them.

    • @Metalcursine
      @Metalcursine ปีที่แล้ว

The problem with tap lands is that they slow down the game significantly. Make some games last for hours, not because of intense gameplay, but because people not have the mana. And if one player has upgraded his deck (only the mana) he has a huge advantage.

I just bought the token and the draconic deck. Due to the situation the prices went up (as mostly everything gto more expensive) and I paid 25€ per deck (which is fair, I guess for a store). I just got into playing magic with my friends who are established players and I got the draconic destruction deck and after a few upgrades (nothing too expensive at all) I ended up holding my own. Even won a game or came in second! I’m really thankful for these decks and the price to help new players like myself get into playing! Although now half my paycheck will go to new cards and decks 😂

20$ for these is just not possible with what they are costing from distributors. prof is basing his pricing on old product that was released way before wotc raised their prices for product on a distributor level for 30-40%. stores just can't get these and sell them for 20% without taking a loss. as a store employee myself, we have to sell them for 30 bucks to barely meet our needed margins to pay the bills. no one is getting rich of that price except wotc.

I just started playing magic. The first thing I bought was chaos incarnate as a starter commander deck, Not knowing at all what it was entailed. At first it was quite rough. For starters I am obviously new and inexperienced, but the deck was also just missing a little extra power. Now a month later I’ve made 2 other decks. A dragon, and a snow deck. Both fun. I’ve also tweaked chaos incarnate, which is now my strongest deck! Just taking out some of the more basic unsynergized cards and adding cheaper mana cost and more rewarding cards it has transformed it into a very formidable deck to use. Just adding cards as simple as taurean mauler, or Chandra’s spitfire elevates it. I know the win more often than not in 4’s and it is always fun to play.

What's really funny, is I actually built my first commander deck earlier this year and atarka was my commander I built around. It eventually became ganax Astral hunter and acolyte of bahamut as the commander background companion. Giving me treasure tokens to ramp up with is definitely a strong strategy when dealing with high cmc dragons.

I got the Grave Danger commander deck as my first deck (also first time playing commander) and I played against a friend who's been building his own commander decks for about 2 years. He used some of what he called his "weaker decks" and I was able to wipe him out pretty well. That was also a 1v1 game and I know commander is supposed to be up to 4, but to learn the game mechanics, I really enjoy the deck and am excited to make upgrades on it as I learn more!

I like it for a new player who's not sure what type of deck they will like. Picking up 1 or 2 of these and trying a few different things could really be cool for new players vs a $50 deck they might not like. The Dragons one looks a whole lot like the AFR Draconic Rage deck with a different commander, as interesting as that is.

Well, would've been nice to see this video before this was bought for christmas. On Bazaar of Magic they were listed between 30 and 60 euro, though my brother bought our decks from CardMarket, where he got Draconic Destruction for around 50. Seeing this video now it was most definitely not worth it, but it's whatever. I'll still be able to play Magic with my brother and his girlfriend, which is all I really cared about. I did buy Draconic Dissent though, which was 45 euro on Bazaar. No idea if that was worth it either, but a dragon goad deck seemed pretty fun to play. If you couldn't tell, I like dragons

I don't play or collect Magic (yet), but these products seem like a tempting place to start. I recognize many of the cards in the Selesnya deck, and I always think dragons are cool. Can't decide which to run. And the $20 price tag seems like a fair price for an introductory commander deck, even if it's not competitive within the larger ecosystem.

Alright, just a personal story here, but I think the prof is a little off on this one. I have a friend who has repeatedly refused to get into magic because of the price. We saw these at target for $27 (didn't realize it was a markup at the time and also were at target for other reasons, not trying to cut out the LGS) and he finally decided to buy a deck (dragons). Some magic player friends offered upgrades, and we switched out 15 cards in total. The mana base is the weakpoint and there is some slow jank - that much is true. However, when we went to play some 3 player games, the dragon list easily went 2-1 and would have gone 3-0 with ease if the player had been slightly more experienced. We weren't holding back, and while our lists were on the lower side of the power scale, they were at least on par with the precons of the last year. We were consistently impressed with its speed and the efficacy of the dragon deck's engine. Most importantly, the deck was an incredibly fun way to get my friend into magic.

As a new player (like this is my first deck) these starter decks have been a god send for getting my hand in the game at a cheap price most people assume magic is for rich people, and in some cases it is but I digress.
It's a fantastic starting template and you can then swap out cards to brew a custom-ish deck and start playing with friends pretty much straight away.
I got chaos incarnate and I find it really fun to play and once I started adding other goad cards and some pingers it really honed in on what the deck is trying to accomplish.
I found it a great introduction to magic!

being a player that hasnt played the game in like a decade, let alone commander before, I bought Grave Danger and was surprised at how badly designed it was. Theres so many cards that want to play off of sacrificing or buffing a big board but none whatsoever to actually help build a board. Same with milling. The idea is to bring back creatures from the grave that were milled there or just getting resurrected again, but basically the only mill card you'll be seeing is your commander, which is one when it enters the battlefield... It's like a car with absolutely no gas. At least it didn't stop me from enjoying learning commander (and even get into the game again) and I'm still glad wotc made them.

In France, the decks are sold at about 27/28€ each, and are kinda hard to find cheaper. BUT, since I'm a new MTG player, even the bulk is good to grab for me, so I'm glad with it ahah. I've played MTG Arena for like 2 years, but I really really wanted to get into IRL gameplay, and especially Commander, so 40€ including sleeves and deckbox is kind of a good deal still. I'm clearly the target audience and I'm glad Wizards chose this specific time to release these precons ;)

I've been wanting to play Magic the Gathering for years but the sheer amount of formats and deck types has been so daunting and frankly intimidating for me. I've dabbled in playing in Arena and enjoyed it. My wife noticed how much I enjoyed it, so she bought be the Token Triumph deck (since I know I really like green and white cards in my Arena play), and it has been A BLAST playing with this deck so far. I've played a few friends with their older pre-constructed decks and by overwhelming the board with tokens, I won each time (maybe they let me win since I'm so new, but it felt good either way).
I would say this is definitely what I needed to get my foot in the door with physical cards, and I'm super interested in upgrading the deck and even looking at different pre-constructed decks for more options and gameplay-strategies.

As someone lucky to get Draconic Domination on release or soon after I feel that the dragon deck here is a watered down version, but gives key staples for that deck as solid reprints. This means that dragons is accessible again without the $250+ price tag the former product now reaches. It allows for solid edh Scion play and even gives you the key cards for the Oprah D-ETB (death by ETB) that allows you to make 6 or 7 dragons in a turn easily and allows you "And you get 5 damage, and you get 6 damage, and you get 7 damage, and you get 8 damage...." it is a real fun way to kill a pod from an attack trigger and before you get to the damage step!
