I LOVE Priit and appreciate you giving him a voice on your podcast. I'm a 60 year old grappler that started jiu jitsu at 58. I'm a blue belt now and in fantastic physical shape, but in no way have the athleticism of the 20 and 30 year olds. I found Priit's defensive stuff early in my journey and 100% credit him and his techniques for keeping me on the mats.

That's amazing! I'm not surprised at all. He has a great system! Glad he's kept you on the mats 🙏

Great interview. I think his defence of the turtle was very logical when he brought up that in wrestling the referee position is escaped 60% of the time. I personally love turtle and would much rather be turtled than have my guard passed.

Thank you! I love the point he made as well and it's try. Try taking the back of a high level wrestler from referee position and it is incredibly difficult.

      @jeep1927 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. I’m no wrestler but often times I’ll go from turtle to top north south very easily in the gi.

GREAT episode! Stumbling upon Priit as a blue belt totally changed my game and gave me a solid defensive foundation that I deploy now as a brown belt and don't think I'll be stopping anytime soon. His philosophy on training methods reminds me of my time in Jeet Kune Do and also echos a lot of what Ben Askren talked about when he was on Joe Rogan's podcast. Have him back on sometime!

I am so happy to find this video. I've been following Jordan Teaches Jiujitsu for a while and as a >60 yr old 130 lb. blue belt I've really had to take to heart a very methodical, defensive, approach in order just to survive and show up and train consistently without going home wrecked all the time. Priit's videos also help me with this.
Yes, good defense help me be more comfortable taking chances and going on offense more often because I have more confidence in being able to recover from mistakes.

I know nothing but I see Priit highlighting techniques/ideas which many may do unconsciously and have mostly gone unnoticed.

Awesome episode. When I was starting out as a white belt back in 2006' I was always intrigued with Eduardo telles' style. Priit is able to explain that style and teach it effectively. As an aging black belt going up against younger and tougher guys in my gym I'm able to hang in there and survive. His teaching will be useful and help me stay longer on the mats well in to my 50's.

Nice conversation. I just watched the latest b team video where Craig is showing how to defend and escape a back attack. A lot of what Craig has been doing and sharing is confirming the things Priit has been promoting for the last years. I agree most of the ‘hate’ comes from a lack of context like Jordan said.

I feel like the answer to the Reddit question is that half of Reddit is a cesspool of terrible hot takes. I am maybe a little biased because I am not the biggest Reddit fan.

Good job. I just want to add that BJJ systems are more like music types...jazz...hip hop...R n B....all of them share from each other but at some point it's different enough to be a new genre. His BJJ has stuff from before but he as added and rearranged to the point that it is a subset ... almost a new class imo...

Can you guys do something on the Gracies and the history of jiujitsu please? And something about the book Breathe by Rickson

I think the criticism is that defensive bjj is good and all for bjj but not great for a real fight. It’s easy to be super defensive if your not getting punched and elbowed to the face

This was an EXCELLENT episode. Thank you very much. I have been thinking about getting into Priit's material, and now I am even more inclined to do so. Understanding the defensive side of Jiu-Jitsu is certainly not the only important thing, but it is quite important and often underappreciated.

Sorry to hear about all the negativity. Keep up the hard work Priit!
As a white belt with 8mo of training, defense is paramount. I would love to have a defense half as good as Priit’s.
God Bless you guys! Thanks for the incredible content!

Priit-shit is being validated more and more with more mainstream grapplers taking on concepts he has been talking about. Craig Jones is pushing turtling a lot at the moment.

It's simple .... much of it depends on 'how' you say a thing - as opposed to the 'content' of that thing. If Marcelo Garcia, for example, had have offered up the same material, it would have been welcomed. I think Priit's 'way' of saying what he says, his tone, manner, etc - is the reason for the 'hate'. It is very difficult for people to accept value and advice from people they simply DO NOT LIKE. The first rule of succesfull teaching - is to 'build rapport'. We also need to take into account, the fact that English is not Priit's first language. I do not know anything about Estonian mannerisms/culture - maybe this is something of a contributing factor ??? I recall a time in Brazil, back in the late 80’s, I was at a competition in Teresopolis, with my fellow team-mates; I was a white belt at the time. I saw a match between two brown belts (I think they were Soca and Royler) and every time one found their guard being passed, they turned away and exposed their back (they transitioned to turtle) - and then seamlessly attacked or reversed the fight from that position. I remembered being very confused - yet impressed by how well it worked. I pointed this out to Renzo, who was sitting with me, and he suggested that it was not something I was ready to do. I needed to wait until purple belt before learning such strategies. I clearly recall being both frustrated and skeptical at hearing that. Still … he was of course, perfectly correct. I still needed to take a firm grasp on my mothers hand - before strolling across that particular road.
We learn the ‘rules’ (doctrine) thoroughly - build understanding and technical proficiency - and then, we can begin bending (if not breaking) the rules. This is often how innovation begins. Priit is an innovator of sorts ... we should give him a chance ... despite the lack of contextual prep and personality issues - in his presentations.

"learn the rules before you break them" is so true! I went a little heavy into the turtle stuff early on and realized that it makes more sense once you have a better grasp of the fundamentals! Thanks for your input Professor Will, I have really learned a lot from the videos and seminars you have shared!

Glad Jordan is calling out reddit for having a bunch of cocky whites and blues. Also love the conversation about turning away vs turning in and how Pritt wasn't saying turning in was bad despite him mostly turning away.
