Coleman Hawkins "Body And Soul" on Bass Clarinet - Become a more flexible player, part 2

  • So, by request (and also because I just wanted to do it), here's one of Coleman Hawkins' most famous tunes. "HOW DOES HE GET THAT VIBRATO" you might ask. "HOW DOES HE GET THAT SOUND" you might ask. Good questions. I figure it all out in this video.

    Currently 8-9 months into playing bass clarinet after 4 years on clarinet. I've gotten a lot better than I could've ever imagined thanks to your help, and now I'm taking that knowledge to Grand Nationals later this year. It may not mean much to you, but thank you from the bottom of my heart. Bass clarinet has become a huge part of my life now, and it's helpful and inspiring knowing that it's still possible to improve that much with enough hard work and effort.

    I found this even more impressive than the Giant Steps video. Great detective work, great result. (I think, when you boil it down to the essence, you're playing more like a saxophonist.) I'm going to send this to a bunch of clarinet/sax-playing friends...

    Lovely. "Don't you know he's the king of saxophone . . . "
    I'm pretty sure Hawk was playing a 1930's Otto Link, which had a significantly larger chamber than the "modern" 1950's and 1960's Links you showed him playing. These Links were shorter, noticeably so where the mouthpiece joins the neck cork.
    Kudos to you for showing such respect!

      +Richard Fenno Yes he was playing Otto Link 'Master Link' in his early to middle years before he switched to a Berg and the Super Tone Master in the videos provided. In order to match his set up for me, I used the Master link with a 3 tip and a Rico Jazz Select 4 Hard. With a large amount of sub tone you will consequently get a Ben Webster sound, something I use for my ballad playing.

    Used to be, by tradition, it was required that every tenor saxophonist learn and master Bean's (his nickname) "Body and Soul." Nowadays, if you hang at Eastman, students can not hear past his vibrato, and dismiss him as old fart jazz.
    There a story about this recording. Bean drank a fifth of scotch before the session, went in and made immortal history in this one take.
    Thank you for your work.

    i play like this alllll the time. its such a colorful sound. sometimes i hold my tongue on the reed very lightly while i play, and it exaggerates the sound even more. but you have to adjust your tongu depending on the register, and intonation becomes iffy.... but in a kinda cool way...

    Regarding the double lip embouchure---even though he didn't use it, what significance would the double lip might have had to Hawkins's sound? I understand John Coltrane used double lip, even though it was already quite rare by then.

    Hi. I love your videos, you're very pedagogic (sorry for that word). Regarding Coleman Hawkins' embouchure, it seemed (to me) like he was not rolling his lower lip over his teeth, I mean like the one that Jerry Bergonzi and George Garzone call "no embouchure embouchure". Could it be like that? What do think (about CH possibly using it, and about that kind of embouchure). Thank you very much!

    #Earspasm, this is a great note-for-note, timbre interpretation, but the spirit of his playing is what matters most, so I'm not sure why you're instructing a tenor standard on bass clarinet - sure he got his influence from cello and romantic classical music, but it would be great if you could lecture using his own instrument, for more insight and closeness. Love your approach tho! :)

    Do you have any tips on how to play louder?

    • @TheShadowblast123
      @TheShadowblast123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joey marzillo Although I'm not him, I can tell you that to play louder you need more air in, more air out, and solid emborochure. More air in means to breathy deeply in, more air out means to breath more forcefully out. You need a solid emborochure to keep your self from sounding like crap

    • @calebl1004
      @calebl1004 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheShadowblast123 i know this is late, but you should never change the amount of air you take in to fit a certain dynamic marking. if you're taking in less air to play softer, your sound will be way less full and harder to maintain. take "fortissimo breaths", use good breathe support for ANY dynamic, only regulate the speed of your air for different dynamics, so faster air for louder sound and slower air for quieter sound
