    This was literally the best story-telling of this case that I’ve ever heard. The sheer amount of detail and plot twists blew my mind. Literally when I thought the story was over, and you said “But, this was not the end of the story for flight 401” and the moments I’ve heard after that sent chills down my spine. Bravo MrBallen, bravo!

    I am a retired airline pilot and we studied this accident at length. It resulted in training changes that ensured whenever there was a mechanical problem on board that the flying pilot would stay focused on only flying the aircraft and not get involved in troubleshooting the problem. You told this very well and got it exactly right.

    A very close friend of mine died in the crash of 401. She was my babysitter whom I adored as I was a child. Her luggage was retrieved and sent to her family, but her body was never found. When I would visit her aunt, who actually raised her, we would talk about her and about what a loving person she was. Those talks have helped to keep her alive in my heart, which is a great comfort for me, even after all these years. ♥️.
    Thanks, Mr. Ballen, for posting this story.

    I once had surgery to repair my shattered wrist. Sometime much later after I woke up and was watching tv, a doctor came in and told me surgery went well, no issues, asked how I was, etc. The entire time he was writing on a chart. After he left to let me rest, an aide came in to ask if I needed anything, and asked who I was talking to. I told him what happened. That doctor was never there. I was not under any medication. My surgery meds had worn off. I remembered that vividly since 2004.

      Something similar happened to me and my friend recently. A year and a couple months ago my friend and i were at our duty station at camp pendleton. We were in the 62 area and we were told were getting a new plt sargeant bc our old one failed IULC (a course needed to become a plt sargeant). Before we met our new plt sargeant my friend and i were walking to the px. While walking we saw this marine in an older uniform. He wore our up to date cammies but his plate carrier and kevlar was dated. He also had an m16 which was pretty uncommon for a grunt around this time bc we switched our m16 to the m27, so we thought he worked an admin related job and was probably outside training with his platoon or something. My friend and i starts talking to him and we start a conversation about our plt sargeant. We tell him our new one is apparently top of his class at iulc so we might have a pretty good sgt. The random guy then asks what his name is and we say SSGT Fuentes (not his real name). The doods eyes widen and says he might know him. He then says his team leader in Afganistan was SSGT Fuentes. At this point were like no way this dood went to afganistan. He looked so young like he was 18 or 19. The guy then tells us to tell ssgt fuentes that Larry says hi. We say okay and go on our way. Literally hours later we meet our new plt sgt and i was suprised bc he was actually my receiving week DI but thats unrelated to the story. He then says hi and afterwards my friend and i goes up to him and says Larry says hi. We were excited to see his reaction bc this is literally his friend from afganistan potentially. Ssgts face looked so sad and stunned. Like how do we know larry hes been dead for a decade. My friend and i believe this was a call to let ssgt know his friend is good and was probably a way of saying good job on completing IULC.
      A couple weeks later we do a pt up 1stsgts hill. This hill houses crosses with names of the fallen who died in combat. One of the crosses had the name larry on it. Our plt sgt comes up to us and tells us who he was and how he was the best marine he served besides.
      This story is kinda sad but is also proof that brotherhood goes beyond the grave.

    I actually find it really cool that the ghost of the engineer warned the pilot of malfunctions which ended up being real. He wanted to help and potentially saved lives by doing that

    • @DennisTea
      @DennisTea 2 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      There was never any evidence that any crash parts were salvaged, and no one reported any ghost sightings until a reporter took a joke from a flight engineer too seriously. The flight engineer jokingly said he thought he saw the ghost of the dead flight engineer when checking the engines, and ghost on a plane made it to newspapers. The reason ghost sightings stopped getting reported is because people just forgot about the crash after a while, they were no longer paranoid. In the reports the ghost didn't tell anyone of a malfunction. The flight engineer heard a knocking sound in the hell hole, opened the door to check it, thought he saw a ghost in the darkness, checked it out and found a problem that could have caused a crash. People act like it's crazy for a malfunctioning engine part to make a knocking sound.

    • @tylerdavis9826
      @tylerdavis9826 2 ปีที่แล้ว +181

      @@DennisTea you’re speaking of 2 separate instances though. The warning wasn’t the knocking in the hell hole, that was a whole different encounter, the warning was before a take off. Not saying I disagree with you, but if you’re going to make an argument you should probably at least fully comprehend what you’re trying to argue against and for. It all went over your head other than 2 key parts of a very large story.

      No, ghost do not exist. This alleged flight engeener was a demon that has taken a form of a dead person in oder to deceive and torment living people. The reason why he told about the engine problem was to maintain this believe in ghost so that we may trust them and it would be dead easy to deceive us into making vad decisions.

    I have a personal connection to this disaster. I was very good friends with the daughter of a survivor of this crash, Richard Micale (he is listed on the website). Richard, frequently spoke of his experiences about the crash & his recovery. He said that while he was floating in the Everglades, he distinctly recalled seeing an apparition walking among the debris. He also said that he wasn’t certain if seeing this apparition was due to inhaled fuel fumes or it was really a ghost. Also, due to your military medic history, you may find it interesting that it was this disaster that CRM - Crew Resource Management & how we run codes, is based upon! I’m in the medical field & have worked closely with members of the aviation community that also teach ACLS/BLS.
    I am so thankful that Richard Micale, survived this crash. He actually saved my life & is the only reason I am here to comment on your video today! Richard, passed away many years ago. I am so happy that you covered this information. The man Robert, in your story, also pulled Richard Micale, out of the Everglades that night. Thank you again for covering this story.

    I remember when my daughter was in first grade she mention her friend had to walk about 3 blocks to go home and the funny part of it was that a crow named Roberto walked with her until she step into her front door, one day I asked Jenny if i could give her a ride and she said no thank you miss Heidi Roberto is coming to pick me up and walk with me to my home. I waited until I could see someone arrive and I only saw a crow landing by her feet and started walking with her ! It was crazy I saw her mother the following day and she said Jenny rescued Roberto from a old pipe on her yard when Roberto was a baby and injured so she kept Roberto in a cage until he healed and let him free but he was attached to her and kept coming back every day to see her go to school and back! Her mother one day saw Jenny telling Roberto let’s walk to school and he listened to her and I don’t know the full story but for 4 years my daughter was in this school I saw the crow waiting for Jenny outside the main office waiting for her even on rainy days that Jenny was driven to school he was flying behind the car to see she was ok! It was amazing! Plus he talked as well ! He said something like (Jen) or (aww) and did cursed as well ! 😅 they do know everything and are so smart!

      So normally, I PROBABLY would have called "BS!" on your story if it didn't sound rather familiar to another one that was documented in a video I saw recently where this crow & very little boy had formed an unbreakable bond w/each other; not only would the crow ONLY let the young boy ever touch or pet him (whereas it would immediately scamper to avoid ANYONE ELSE who ever tried to like they were the plague), but eventually when the boy became old enough to start school, this crow would be waiting from it's spot on their roof & then fly down to greet him just as he'd be getting home from school EVERYDAY... and in the video, the 2 were almost ALWAYS together w/the crow "walking" (or more so, "hopping") right along side the young boy everywhere he went as they played together in their big yard. It would also come by to "visit" him many other times, flying up & landing on the window ledge of whatever room the boy was in either playing or watching TV & the little boy would see him, get all excited & go open up the window to greet his little crow friend back...
      ANYWAY, I found it to be rather fascinating (and NGL, it was pretty damn cute to say the least...) as I'd never realized just how intelligent Crows were up till that point! I'll have to see if I can find a link to that video again & will paste in this thread if/when I do

During training I had to go down the elevator but I was lucky enough never to have to work it. The flight attendants told me about the ghost faces down there. I was so glad I never had to. Great storytelling. They must’ve missed some parts. 👀👀👀👀👀

    I read this book, "The Ghost of Flight 401" many years ago. It's my favorite account of a haunting Ive ever read. These ghosts were protecting the flights they appeared on. On one occasion Don Repo appeared to flight staff and told them that there would never be another crash of an L1011. I highly recommend reading the book!

    Airline pilot here. One of the hardest things for me to do was explain things about how the plane works in pilot terminology to regular civilians. And I don’t think you’re a pilot but you literally explained things in layman‘s terms for anyone who is not a pilot perfectly. Well done.
    Additionally, I remember learning about this flight in our Airline Pilot training. There were some rules and regulations made due to this crash. It’s a sad truth that a lot of our rules and regulations were written in blood.

    My uncle used to work for Eastern Airlines in the late 80s. He was a very accomplished pilot, was in the marine Airforce and had a lot of flight time. He's a perfectionist and would always inspect the plane that he was going to fly and would write up a report if he found any issues. Eastern threatened him several times about the write ups until they finally fired him and blacklisted him from the industry in which he couldn't get a job for over a decade. He would later get work doing private flights until he was approached by and currently works for the FAA as an aircraft safety inspector/investigator out of JFK. There were a lot of issues with that airline and it's no wonder they went out of business.

    What a great story and as usual, Mr Ballen tells it flawlessly ! I was a flight attendant for National Airlines, a few year after the Eastern flight 401 tragedy. National flew a lot of DC 10s that also had a lower galley to store and cook the food necessary for the flights. I loved working that position. It was a strange place very raw, cold metal, and weird noises, real industrial spookiness. I did not pay too much attention to it because I was always so busy, but once or twice i was visited by some wandering passenger who got into the elevator by mistake (on purpose.) They always asked me how I could stand it, and ALONE! They never stayed more than a couple minutes because the place gave them the ibby-gibbies (sp?) After a busy service, for a few moments I would sit a spell, listen to the clicks, groans, and whistles from inside the belly of the beast and think about 401. I would never doubt the reports of all the witnesses, but if there was a place where you could see ghosts, that lower galley was definitely the spot.

    Both of my parents worked for Eastern for over twenty years, and were with the company when this unfortunate event occurred. Their home base (at that time) was MIA, the Miami International Airport. My mother, who was a flight attendant then, never did have an encounter but she told me one of her friends and fellow flight attendants saw flight engineer Repo on one of her flights after the crash. My father, who was a mechanic for Eastern, had no supernatural encounters though he no doubt worked on the planes with parts cannibalized from 401, as he specialized on the L1011. I have personally worked on an L1011 in a museum setting and it's a magnificent bird. It's a shame this tragedy ever occurred.
    I have a theory that the ghosts of those who failed to prevent the accident served as guardians for the fleet in the afterlife, as it is the responsibility of the crew to assure the safety of all souls onboard their aircraft. It seems to me as though they took this duty very seriously.

    i experienced the same thing Jenny had when i was younger, alot younger. i was at my grandmothers place and in the living room alone which i often was, and completely fine to add! i suddenly got the feeling of fear, i literally curled up in a corner and cried as i watched the entrances to the room as if something was coming to get me. and out of the corner of my eye i could have sworn i saw a ghost, could have been me hallucinating from fear but…who knows? i sat there till my grandmother came downstairs to figure out why i was crying in which i was balling my eyes out at this point. i haven’t been in that house since but honestly i wonder how it would feel if i went back there today.
