    To Syny - backing takes practice. Put your right hand at 6 o'clock on the steering wheel. If to want the rear of your trailer to go right, steer right. If you want it to go left steer left. Use short movements and allow trailer to turn before countersteer. Back using driver side only mirror and take your time.

      that way is so hard for average driver to figure out. easy way to think of it is that you drive the trailer, start understanding that concept, visualize yerself as if you are seated facing the rear of your trailer a few feet from the end in an imaginary chair, steer it from the new "back end", where you actually are (which is actually the front of the truck). Helped me, and I could always drive....

    At the Whites Creek Hub in Nashville, we didn't have part time feeder drivers. We had full time cover drivers, where everyone starts out. That sucked and you are pretty accurate about that stuff. Also when I first started, zero facial hair allowed. By the time I retired in 2018, some facial hair was okay, as long as it was trimmed neatly. I'd suggest there are different criteria being enforced where you are. But you are more or less nailing it with the pay and benefits.

    • @jflightexp
      @jflightexp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the comments. And yeah you're right about the no facial hair thing. When I first started no other driver had facial expect for mustaches. So I had to shave. Until I met another driver from a different facility with a full grown beard. And I was like "What the hell?" So I asked him and he informed me on how to get it done, and so I submitted three form and it got approved. The rest is history.

Feeder = tons of sitting/windshield time. Package = interaction with customers. Feeder = talking to yourself for hours at a time. Package = day shift hours. Feeders = mostly night operation hours.

    • @turn-n-burn1421

      Wouldn't do any truck driver any good to back faster if it means tearing up equipment and most long time truckers will tell you that you have good days and bad. On the good days you seemingly can't make the slightest error and on the bad, you look like a first day rookie. Ain't no biggie. Don't run over anyone and don't damage equipment. Focus on that!

    • @galehess6676
      @galehess6676 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      don't think about speed, only think about that you are driving the trailer (not the truck), when you are backing, reverse your brain's visualization of the situation, you are in an imaginary seat at the tailgate so to speak, now drive that thing from there, put it where you want it, look at other tire marks on the ground and follow them, it is dang easy, if you get this concept.... i learned that september, you never too old to learn , even if you know it all lol

  • @rightlanetruckinsacramento1039
    @rightlanetruckinsacramento1039 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Becoming a feeder driver is based on seniority. When feeder has an opening, UPS HR will post a bid sheet for package drivers or package handlers. Based on seniority they call up the highest person on the list. UPS will train the person to get their CDL. Having a CDL before beginning training is no guarantee that a person will pass the training class UPS offers.

      Double reasons actually. First UPSers see UPS FREIGHT like a step child and if you run into the more hardcore Teamsters, those tards hate just about anyone. Don't let it bother you. Just keep your head down and you do you. I always waved at the Freight drivers, but still never saw them as being real UPS. Oh and in the context of you taking loads farther; you are taking the money runs away from drivers that prefer those. As always, I'm only talking about real UPS, not Freight, but acknowledge their existence.

    • @galehess6676

      @@turn-n-burn1421 name calling just makes the situation worse. Why would they respect rookies and hacks? They actually stand up for themselves and make what they should, whereas most drivers are , very, very unlikely to be pros and actually safe and doing proper DVIR and are not standing up for themselves. I work for $24/hour which is bs money when i have offers from UPS and Estes ... small companies are a crap show and the drivers match their environment in so many ways (90% of the time). Drivers where work ask me why the heck I am there... fair question, but I have another business and $$$/hour and free time and tell the company when I will work lol, so... maybe UPS soon. Good luck, and do something every day to be more professional and hone your craft. You'll double your $$

  • @rightlanetruckinsacramento1039

    To all else, how does UPS have the safest drivers, it's all in the training ONE on ONE and following established methods. Lastly, not all applicants for feeders make it through training. If the applicants are not safe with a trainer sitting shotgun, why would the trainer certify them to work alone? Not happening.

    I attended a brown Friday hiring event today, was told the only position available that involves a tractor trailer was as Switcher(yard jockey) and it is a seasonal position. I have 14yrs of safe driving experience. I ask myself this how can UPS attract the safest and most experienced drivers if they require u start at square one.

    • @jflightexp
      @jflightexp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I understand your frustration. It's because there's a union involved. They can't hire you and put you straight into a driver position with a route, or a feeder position, and skipping a bunch of drivers that have been waiting years to get there. There are other divisions of Ups that hire drivers. Like UPS freight or Scs Air freight. But you just have to keep looking around. Good luck!

    • @ceelo99
      @ceelo99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it's all good, we have had 4 drivers leave to ups and all have great things to say about the company. It's difficult to leave something stable for something seasonal or temporary but I will continue to reapply hopefully a permanent position will open up 🤞, thank you for your words and please keep posting up content.

      One of the things "most" UPSers learn is: UPS has rules that must be followed unless they need something. Then, those rules don't exist. That's the funny part. The serious part is: it's called United Parcel Service and you work for them, not the other way around. So you go with the flow and make yourself valuable while watching for opportunities. You can be the Teamster type if you want. UPS has a lot of unemployed Teamsters who rocked the boat.... For a while.

    You wrong about about UPS making $10 more then FedEx drivers. The only one that contract out drivers is FedEx Ground. FedEx Freight and FedEx Express have there own trucks and drivers that makes just as much as UPS drivers depending on your seniority. Also have driver training facilities at some locations.

    • @michaelholder4841

      Actually we don’t make at least 10 bucks more than fedex freight and express. I’ve talked to drivers in freight and express and they top pay is around 27-29. Ups top pay is 41.

      It depends on what area you from to. Down South they top pay is about $29.00 up north for FedEx Express it's around $35 in some places. FedEx freight make less then FedEx express, but with Freight you can get to top pay Quicker.
