- We are setting up our A&H QU-16 console and RCF speakers for a fund raising event. This is a sound system setup for an outdoor event. This video covers the long and (sometimes) boring task of setting up and taking down a sound system. It was very hot this day! However, it cooled off really quick toward the end of our load-out.
Gear: A&H QU-16 console, RCF NX45-A top speakers, RCF 8004-AS sub, Sennheiser and Audix mics.
We are mixing for the "Play It Forward" band (out of Durham, NC)

Sir, I´ve been watching your videos for maybe 3 years now and I have learned a lot. Today watching this one (and I been away for a while) I realized that I´ve managed to grow my business here (I do exactly the same as you do) and I feel happy now I have the things that I saw you had and said to myself I would work for as well. Now I have a team of good people and a pickup truck and of course more speakers and mixers. My point is, thanks for sharing this. Not only for technical reasons, your videos are super inspirational!! Hi Craig, also here in northern Italy, lots of rain. Friday, Saturday and Sunday 6 August, 3 concerts cancelled. Luckily the organization phoned us immediately canceling the events. Thanks for sharing..Warm greetings from Gorizia, Italy.

I very recently started doing a run of events on a Pier; which presents a whole set of challenges I'd not experienced to the same extent as I am now. Many of the events have been postponed or cancelled as a result of the weather; mostly the wind. When the weather is good, it's one of the nicest places I've ever worked an event. When the weather has an off-day, its the most horrible of places to be. I'm certainly glad I invested in some tarps. One of the other things I have found to be incredibly useful are composting bags...when it decides to rain, I can quickly throw one over speakers to get them covered, and then use a bungee cord to hold it in place.
Mixing off-axis is certainly a challenge; I try to be on-axis where possible. Some events insist I set up FOH at the side of the stage. Not only does it look unprofessional, it makes my job so much harder.
We have never done anything on a pier... great info on your experiences with it! From your description about the "good" days and "bad" days on a pier, this makes complete sense. Thanks for your comment.

Great vid as usual! I'd love to see you do a video of you eqing a room/venue. For example, a room that's very boomy and what way you would approach it.

I used a R18 rock and roller cart and it can hold twice u carry on that dolly! I suggest it and recommend it if u ever want one! They are awesome

Ugh. I could feel your agony. Been doing a lot of outdoor gigs this summer and it seemed like everywhere we went they reported record high temperatures. There were times I thought I was gonna die. Props for the calm professionalism you guys show under duress. Q: why don't you use speaker covers? The RCF covers are really nice.
Thank you for your comment. The heat was taking a toll. Regarding speaker covers, for us, they are an un-needed expense. I have an RCF cover for the 8004-AS sub, but that cover is only used when storing that speaker. Speaker covers are nice, but we have found they are easy to damage (when loading/unloading) and can interfere with the loading / unloading of other gear. About 3 times a year, I go through and touch up the cabinets with paint.

Geez dude that’s close, gigs I do 9 out of 10 time you have to load in through the kitchen.
Or up the freight elevator, through back corridor, through the big concert room and into the front door of the club..think casino bar lounge.

It's been a rainy season up here in Connecticut. Surprised my gear has survived this season so far.. lol
It's a hit and miss for rainy weather down here... seems that we hit a lot of the rainy days.

I didn't quite get to see where the subs are at, but if you placed one on the right and the other on the left, they tend to create wave breaks hence you need to put the subs together at the front of the stage and then the mids or full range speakers on the sides parallel to each other or in such a set up 90 degrees to cover all angle..humble opinion correct me if im wrong.
We used a single 18" sub for this event. It was sitting in the center the stage area (with the tops sitting far left and far right). You are correct, placing subs far apart does cause physics issues, which is why we always place are subs in the center. Thanks for your comment.

I had the QU-16 for a number of years until I retired it for the QU-SB which in conjunction with the AB168 stage box gives me 32 channels. Great desks. I always use iPads for all events I undertake, makes being setup in not so ideal locations redundant. Have another lad with me who covers monitors on the iPad, makes any changes that the band want quick and painless for all. I have broke into a sweat watching you load in/out in such heat. Would you not have preferred to have run two subs with one at each side as opposed to one straight down the middle?
Thanks for your comment. It was a hot day. For the subs, using one in the center (as we did in the video) yields much better coverage than two subs (one at each side). If I had two subs, they would have been placed in the center. Using subs spread apart (one on each side of the stage) actually produces dead spots over the listening area, therefore reducing the bass coverage (compared to using only one sub). I have a video covering this physics issue... it's called "Power Alley".
@@stageleftaudio - I get that, but from a visual point of view it doesn't look as tidy. What I will do in the case of a wide room is place a sub in the middle to fill in the dead spot usually in the centre, however my subs are far smaller so not as noticeable, especially if the stage is a few feet higher than ground level.
My system is the FBT Vertus which comprises of: 6x CLA 208sa and 6x CLA 604a column line array. Compact yet powerful and ideal for small to medium sized events, indoor or out. Not perfect by any means, but no system is.
Yes, the larger subs are usually a little harder to "hide" when they are centered, especially at venues like the one in the video. Nice FBT speakers you use! I bet those do work very well.
@@stageleftaudio - They are great, but not perfect. For a small footprint they certainly pack a punch, have done 500 cap rooms with them without any problems. Obviously the genre of music plays a major part, wouldn't be all that suitable for heavy rock music, but great for Pop, Country, Jazz or Folk.

That is a Tripp Lite 10-outlet power strip. I don't recall, but I think I got that directly from Tripp Lite (aka Eaton). We use that power strip at FOH only.

Hello. Unfortunately, we are unable to discuss service rates for the events. There are a lot of variables involved with an event (time, location, travel distance, indoor/outdoor, number of inputs, anticipated attendance size, size of band, number of bands performing, the size of the sound system needed, etc...) All of these variables factor into our service rate.

Hi on your event video 45 using a digital mixer in a corner, should you not have a remote board(eg an iPad app) to help with you not going back and froth....??????????
iPads are great tools, however, we do not use those for our services. Some bands that we have mixed for (on their gear) use remote mixing... it's great. But, we do not use them as part of our services.
What is the reason that you use Passive speakers instead of active loudspeakers, I noticed that you have an amplifier rack, active speakers would eliminate the need to transport an amplifier rack.
A few reasons we use passive for monitors:
- very affordable
- allows for less electrical wiring around the stage area
- monitor speakers get used/abused much more than FOH speakers
- running a single 4-chnl amplifier can be much more efficient with power than running separate amplifiers for each monitor speaker.
Powered speakers are nice, but for us they would not be a good choice for monitors.
@@stageleftaudio I use all passive for my shows; too many cables on-stage for my liking when using them as monitors. For FOH, I also prefer passives because of the smaller quantity of cable runs and the reduced risk of damage through overheating and rain. When I weigh up the pro's and con's of powered vs. passive, passive always wins out for me, but I do appreciate people's reasons for having powered speakers.
The musician enjoy their music even have small setup, have bad day few days ago, with 2 sidefills mackie SA series with sub, and 1pair SRM for wedges, the musician still complaining the music isn't loud enough in stage, when i on the stage the volume is unbeliveable loud what the hell until the ceilling is rumbbling....
I work with a musician who is as deaf as a stump. He runs a pair of fender twins behind him (a single unit is ear-splittingly loud), and has a pair of wedges in-front of him... He's always asking for more guitar in his monitors. He is so loud on stage, I don't even put him through FOH. In fact, I have mixed for this band with someone else's FOH rig and the FOH ran out of steam long before I had a hope of getting the mix balanced. Sadly, getting this guy to back things off is like pulling teeth, so unless it's an outdoor show with a PA that I know can keep pace with him, I don't work with them.

The monitors are Yamaha CM12V

There are many variables with determining a service rate. We are unable to discuss service rates.
suggest using a second sub and moving them to the ends of the stage, one big sub in the centre looks horrible. If only one sub is available I still move to one side but always opposite of the bass player so the sound is still pretty even. Just my opinion but I prefer clean sight lines. Still I nice sounding rig.
Thanks for your comment. I know what you mean. Actually, using 2 subs (one on each side of the stage) would reduce the coverage for the listing area... due to physics. This would also cause a bass power-alley down the middle of the listening area. Using one sub in the center does look different (especially when people are use to seeing a sub on each side of the stage). The sub in the center provided even coverage across the entire listening area. There were no "loud" nor "soft" spots of bass. When doing smaller shows, we always use a sub centered to ensure proper coverage.
