  • 2022 marked the return of the London Notting Hill Carnival, as well as the 40th anniversary of Channel One playing at the same Carnival (at their usual "Channel One Corner" location at the junction of Westbourne Park Road and Leamington Road Villas). So a video that was a bit "out of the ordinary" seemed a good idea.

    Don’t care if it’s Rock,Rave or your very own Reggae there is something about a big sound system that wets my whistle. Fair play that looks absolutely beautiful too me.

      I just happened to find myself at this festival... back in late 90's
      I still get emotional when I think of the BASSS, no recording or Verbal description can do it justice.. mmmmmmmm, I love BASS

      Wow, what a great comment! Thanks DG RJR!
      After watching this video, I hope that Channel One fans will appreciate more all the jobs that have to be done before the records get played. Including having to do an interview while you are still trying to sort out some final wiring or electronics problems.

      Agree with DG RJR. They were my introduction to the world of sound system back at university, and I've seen a few clips and pictures of the setup but never the whole process. Really drives home the family/community element of the crew that runs these things - that it's not just Mikey and Kayleb.
      Also makes one appreciate even more how mighty their sound is, easy to forget just how big and heavy the boxes are once they're all neatly stacked up! Cheers for sharing.

    Im watching this ...ok heres my connection ....one, my dad lived on the front line in brixton and built sound systems from amps to boxes and is known by most of them King tubbys and others called him Uncle ....i won't give his name ...so as a kid at five i would see four face speakers with Red yellow and green lights on them as high as the room. So its in my blood...his system is in Maypen in a club right now. two i moved to westbounre park rd in 2017...so i met Budgie and we was working on a book about the is history of sound systems ...I learnt even more ...me and the dread of people sound he past away but in ghana in one of his houses hangs one of my photos of Joseph with the key to the church that Halie tomb lays. So why am i writing this well im see one of the white box man has a bocca top on .......Im now in Argentina watching the carnival pre day.....i been going to carnival since 85.....connections and im so far away ...thanks for the post. JAHHHHHH

      RAAAAASTAFARI. Well, that was a comment coming right from the heart. Thanks, AR 23, for taking the time to write this. Glad it brought back so many good memories for you. I had to look up 'bocca' and I think you are referring to the Argentinian football shirt that one sound man is wearing ("La Boca, the Buenos Aires' neighbourhood famed for its colourful houses, its tango and its soccer team, is the one spot that makes every visitor's agenda").

    What’s the reason behind not using line array speakers… scoop bass cabins being used as opposed to main stream subwoofers that adorn most concert setup… is there an advantage to large outdoor setups to use one over the other?… thank U

    Fascinating, thanks Stan. It's a spiritual ritual in some way. Interesting to see Jah T screwing the mid-high boxes together if that's what he's doing. Do they leave the system out overnight on Sunday or break it all down again?

    • @ReggaeManStan
      @ReggaeManStan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you found it fascinating, HonestSonics. Yes, I noticed the screwdriver being used and wondered why, after all, the whole speaker stack gets strapped down very tightly before use, so it's not like the mid-high boxes will be rattling against each other. Jah T told me that the speakers are left out overnight (covered with tarpaulins, I presume) and a couple of people would stay with the truck to keep an eye on things overnight.

    What do you suggest the carnival organisers do to stop the violence, should they surround the perimeter with fences and metal detectors?

    • @ReggaeManStan
      @ReggaeManStan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Give everyone a free gun on entry, to defend themselves with. A small pistol would be sufficient. A Kalashnikov AK-47 would be a bit of overkill. But for someone who is especially afraid of violence, a Kalashnikov AK-47 would give them a greater feeling of security. Charge a small deposit e.g. £5 pounds for the pistol, £10 for the Kalashnikov, to ensure they give the guns back when they leave (rather like those supermarket trollies).
