Just such an awe-inspiring actress. Keeping Up Appearances was for me the best Sitcom on British Television. Even if they wanted to keep going with the programme without Patricia, the programme would have not been the same. With an actress like Patricia, you can not improve on perfection.
After seeing one episode of Keeping Up Appearances for the first time, I was curious as to what other things she was doing and watched her perform "Ms. Fozzard Finds Her Feet" by Alan Bennett. It was leagues away from her Hyacinth Bucket role, and I remember being transfixed. I'd never seen a monologue before (didn't even know there was such a thing), and I was shocked after it was all over how entertained I was because normally I find Bennett's writing so very dry. Routledge to me has to be one of the most prolific actors in the 20th and 21st Centuries. She KNOWS her characters and what motivates them, and that is what makes them come to life.
I always find it fascinating to learn how Hetty Wainthropp Investigates being a Drama did maintain Comedy Moments but Keeping Up Appearances being a Comedy it never showed any Serious Moments.
