What a singer she was (see elsewhere on youtube many examples of her singing qualities) Thanks to the singing, the dancing and the humor of Patricia it's a valuable document Most of all it proves once again that she could do everything, from evergreens to musical , from religious to cabaret and naughty humorous to classical repertoire (for which she was educated). She is an icon in the way Bea(trice) Lillie (1894-1989) was in her days. Listen to Routledge's "It really doesn't matter"(Pirates of Penzance when she was 51), or her part in the Beggar's opera or try to obtain the LP with evergreens she made when very young or choose her singing "I want to sing in opera" (Wogan) , whatever you see and hear , it's always fun and admiration. And don't forget the Alan Bennett monologues she did .And the serious acting from the Brontë's to Hildegard von Bingen. There was a damm lot more than only Hyacinth, although brilliant of course. Here in 1989 she had already made a splendid career (see wikipedia) and being "only" 60 she still had to start with Keeping up Appearances!. What an impressive range of activities. She wanted it as varied as possible, well she indeed managed!! Love from the Netherlands & rest continent, where she is just as popular, although we don't know what happened in the first part of her career, but thanks to TH-cam we get more informed every day, including this contribution from 1989, thanks Nadine Payet.

At four, I never thought that 50, 60, 80, 90 or 100 was old! Many people are young forever. Some people are born old and stay old forever! Some people are cranky from day one! I recall this being filmed in our village , Warkworth, Northumberland. The cast found it cold and chilling in the castle and at the end of a day's filming would go for a drink in the Sun Inn. It was an odd sight seeing a pub full of nuns and a couple of monks propping up the bar!!

I am not exactly sure who decided that this song needed to be sung by three people (instead of the original two) but I'm just so glad that Patricia Routledge was one of them. Best three versions ever (to me) of this song, the female part (originally written for one, not two) was sung by: Julie Andrews Vanessa Redgrave Meg Bussert Approximately in that order. But this one is one of my other favorite versions. ^___^

You might want to look up a very recent recording of her singing 'I Went to a Marvelous Party'.
