Off the coast of Mount Lavinia, in the seemingly innocent waters, lays a beauty forever lost to the currents of the ocean.
It is a wreck diving site called Thermopylae Sierra, 23 meters below the water's surface. The ship was a former Cypriot vessel that sank on August 23, 2012, after degrading from neglect.
Thermopylae Sierra is a wanderlust diving place in Colombo. When it starts from the beginning, it is impressive and adventurous. It consists of 23M depth, and the boat time to get to this location is around 20 minutes, with excellent weather conditions.
It is beautiful how the fish varieties live there in harmony. Some fish stay inside the parts of the shipwrecks while another bunch swims inside and out of the wrecks. Marine animals of all colors and beauty have already formed their home here. It surprises the divers how this almost recent wreck was transformed into this true beauty and how the colorful corals give a remarkable memory to our minds.
Thermopylae Sierra was lost in a monsoon off the coast of Sri Lanka, close to Colombo, in 2012. It was anchored in the Colombo outer anchorage for nearly three years, around 4 kilometers west of Mount Lavinia. On that monsoon day, we witnessed her slow death firsthand as ominous dark clouds formed in the sky and cumbersome monsoon swells washed over the sinking ship's deck.
Fisheries
The wreck has transformed into a thriving artificial coral reef inhabited by many species of shoaling, reef fish, and pelagic fish. Shoaling fish include Blue-Striped Snappers, Indian Mackerel, and Fusiliers. Reef life includes Bannerfish, Lionfish, Scorpionfish, Pufferfish, Boxfish, Moorish Idols, turtles, octopus, and many other species. On occasion, pelagic fish such as Trevally, Eagle Rays, and even Whale Sharks are seen during the season. The wreck acts as a shelter for fish to feed and breed. As such, the wreck acts as a hatchery for juveniles of various species to grow up safely to adulthood. It has contributed immensely as a breeding and aggregation device that has increased the local populations of fish stocks. This has created a thriving fishing ground for local fishermen and sports fishermen, who fish there day and night.
Tourism
The most popular dive site in Colombo for recreational SCUBA divers, local and foreign. Many dive centers in Colombo, Negombo, and even further away, carry out diving excursions to the wreck where foreign tourists are taken on guided dives through the wreck. Therefore this is one of the highly dived underwater sites in Sri Lanka and a major source of attracting foreign currency through marine tourism. In addition, local boatmen take tourists on a surface excursion, plus, there are a few companies from Bolgoda that offers jet-ski tours to the wreck. In addition, this wreck has become popular with a growing free diving community who practice their skills in this shallow wreck.
Educational
As a very large and shallow wreck (depth: 0m to 23m), the Thermopylae Sierra also functions as an effective educational tool to promote marine sciences and conservation. For many young children (age 10 and above) this has been an ideal training ground to get their initial diving certifications by being able to dive an actual shipwreck. Thereby, they have developed a keen interest in the ocean and the conservation of marine resources. This shipwreck has inspired a generation of children to be marine scientists! Why, because it is so accessible to children!
In addition, this is an excellent platform for relevant government agencies to train their marine units. For example in December 2018, the Department of Wildlife Conservation trained their Marine Unit rangers at this wreck on how to do coral surveys.
