So many people, so few with helpful knowledge. This topic should go away, replaced by 2014 stuff. The 2008 ZO6 was so good, it's basically on par with the 2004-6 Ford GT aside from top end speed. GM didn't build the car accidentally, folks. It's a real sports car and outperforms nearly any production car ever built by any manufacturer. To anyone who thinks the Mustang GT is the fastest car Ford can make, the 2004 Ford GT clearly proves you wrong. These days, there are the GT500 and GT350 and the GT "RTR" Mustangs. Adding drag radials, any of the three can run 10's. So can a new ZO6. As for the GT500 internal parts NOT being made by Ford, some the internal parts of the LS7 and other performance engines(most labeled LSX), for many years now, have been made by NON GM sources as well. Is there a problem with buying parts from another source in an effort to save money? I wouldn't think so. Then again, unlike many of the youth here, I know my way around an automobile.

@ZR1Terror obviously to prove that the gt500 kr isn't worth its extremely high price tag. the z06 is a cheaper, better performing, and in my opinion a better looking car. not to mention it's also n/a. edmunds just wants to highlight some of those points i guess.
The manual transmission in my 2011 Ford Mustang GT has been whining and grinding gears since the clutch was replaced due to a design flaw (only to get the exact same clutch assembly), and will be going back to the dealer March 29th to hopefully get the trans replaced (w/ the exact same trans that has all these known issues).
Like all favored manufacturer's report specific....this one is supported by GM. Since when does a Shelby take 12.8 sec to do a 1/4 mile. If you afford the corvette larger stickier tires, then apply the same to the Shelby. Newer versions certainly have a different outcome.
@AudiS403 and this is exactly one of the reasons why the camaro/firebird were 15k cheaper than a base corvette but retained similar drivetrains. there is a huge difference b/t body-on-frame and unibody construction. The frame of a corvette and mustang are more different than night and day.
Interesting. Seems like KR specs are all over the place. Some people claim only a 50hp bump over a standard Shelby while others are claiming that it's a 750hp beast. But they're so rare it's hard to say since Ford didn't really advertise them much.
@AudiS403 wrong, the corvette is still a body on frame design. alot of people who don't really know the corvette consider it a unibody b/c of panels were adhesively sealed to the body frame. don't be confused, all corvettes are still one-piece body-on-frame. the vette uses a total weight bearing self supporting space frame very similar to a tubular race car chassis which is an important part of the safety aspect of a corvette. a magnesium subframe (Z06 and ZR1) is added for engine support
Both are so American Quality sportcars The 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C6 as a 505 horsepower naturally aspirated 7.0 liter DOHC louder exhausts sounding engine, while the 2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 in two versions as a 5.4 V8 Supercharged DOHC 500 horsepower louder exhausts engine sounds kinda like that Cadillac STS-V(4.4 V8 Supercharged 476 horsepower) or same rumble like that
@1vdn992 Seventh the engine rattles. I don't know why, but it does. It could easily be the premiums engine cover, but it makes a noise, especially in 3rd. Eighth when first turned on in the morning the car is idling at 1.5k rpm. I read it has something to do with a air sensors.
Haven driven a newer ZO6 it is an amazing car. Easy to live with in traffic. Smooth clutch and a short throw shifter. But once you get the revs up its a total monster. Ive done over 150mph on public roads and it feels like you're only doing 80. Stops like a rock. Only thing inexperienced drivers need to worry about is over steer when you put your foot down in a turn. All that torque will bite you if you're not ready for it. Absolutely a great car!
Which stats would those be? Motor Trend tested the 2013 GT500 and Camaro ZL1 around Laguna Seca. The GT500 posted the fastest lap time. The only thing it lacked was braking endurance over multiple laps, which can be fixed with some better pads and fluid. The GT500 is significantly faster in a straight line and faster around one of the most popular tracks in America. Clearly the stats are on the Mustang's side. Never mind that the GT spanks the SS and the Boss 302 has no competitor.
I absolutely love both cars. I've always loved the looks of the Mustang but I love the performance of the Corvette. No doubt the Z06 is the better performing car though.
@LimeStangGt You talking about the one they dont make anymore? I dont think it can out do the ZR1, numbers wise it might be an even challenge to the Z06..but we will never know cause they dont make it anymore :(
@fordfan197 If you have to change the whole car to compete with the ZO6 then why not just buy one instead. Vette is lower, wider, and has 50/50 weight distribution. What are you gonna do next; chop the top?
@nbmblownZ My how times have changed, the 505 hp ZO7 now has a price as tested of $105,000 and the 2013 GT500 with 650 hp is $60,000 I can't think of a more archaic engine design than a normally aspirated push-rod V8 with cast internals.
I just like American Muscle. SRT8 Challenger is my favorite Dodge, Mach 1 Mustang is my favorite Ford, and Z06 Corvette is my favorite Chevrolet. Funny thing is, I happen to own them all ;). Well to be fair, I made my own Mach 1 since they don't make them in convertible but you get the point. American Muscle ftw!
@INCknucklehead I do like Ford and I don't really like the Corvette (just not my style) and not really a fan of the Camaro either (don't like some of the styling ques). If the GT500 was meant to run with the Corvette then why is the ZL1 Camaro being made to run with the GT500? The only reason they were paired in this video is because they are within the same horsepower range.
@definingimage They're actually on to something there. Shelby built a 2012 Shelby GT500 Supersnake that packs about 800hp. It's priced right around $85k
@Xsalvaz the new GT500 does 2:58 at VIR, the 2008 Corvette LS7 (438hp) did it in 2:58. the new Mustang will destroy a new Corvette?!? (I don't think so) also, you know the Corvette (all models) are manufactured and built in Bowling Green right? that's in America
@1vdn992 The most common complaint is hard shifts between first, second and third gears, with grinding in other gears. One Mustang owner put his transmission on video - saying the problems had persisted even after six trips to dealerships, two new transmissions, three new clutches and 42 days of the car in the shop
I'm with you. I feel the GT500 is all about fun. I'd much rather own one of those for a daily driver. I'm never hitting a track and rarely hit a strip nor race anything more than a bpu Evo.
WESpower13 and I still love my 2008 Z06. I have much faster and more exotic cars, but I love just about everything about that damn black Z06... it’s just a fun car to drive and the performance is still decent by today’s standards! Possibly my favorite vette of all time...
@1vdn992 The MT82 transmission in question is built by Ford and supplier Getrag at a joint venture in Nanchang, China - a point that has only added to the ire of some customers. And it's not the first time owners of that transmission have reported trouble shifting; the same problems were reported by owners of Land Rover Defenders.
@OgleTorp ''GT3 Rs costs twice as much as the Zo6'' - yes in US, not in EU. Like I said before, standard 2006 ZO6 is lower than GT3 RS at Ring. But 2012 Zo6 is ultimate track car, with full package (same as ZR1), runs very easily 7:22 Prices claimed by GM in EU would be: 105k$ for 2012 ZO6, 135k$ for ZR1. In US prices are smaller. Porsche selling GT3 2009 model for 110k$, and RS for 120k$. New RSR 4.0 is little more than 150k$. Also GT2 2008 model cost about 170k$ (same model set 7:24)
@CleanAndWhite How is any of what you just said relevant to the conversation? And if that's the case then who do you say the Camaros are for? You can get practically anything you want as a rental car so that really makes no difference anyway, not only that but rental cars are tuned down.
@TheHm3 Late 2011-mid 2012. I expect it to be a 2012 model...but it could end up as a 2013. Im hoping for a 7L Supercharged(Or better yet TT ZR1)...will probably be very close to, if not more than, 700HP. Also a "flappy pedal" gearbox, and a better drag coefficient.
@MikeW259 So let's say it's 5 liters and 100 hp/liter. That's good as a result of the smaller displacement, the weight should go down along with the fuel efficiency hitting perhaps as high as 30 mpg! As a result, you have a car worth well over $200k for $70-100k
I'm not sure what this video exists-- these cars are apples and oranges. A 4-seat muscle car against a 2 seat sports car? Really? I bought my GT500 because it's a hoot to drive (and to destroy pretty much every Camaro it ever pulls up next to at a stop light). I didn't buy it to run slaloms against purpose-built sports cars like Corvettes. Anyone who does that is just silly.
@Killkillification I think its hard to speculate on any car that is 3 to 4yrs down the road. The C6 Z06 (released sept 05) and the 05 Ford GT is the best comparions. The two have edged each other several times on several occasions in diff categories. The Z06 has the better times on most tracks tested (still take into account the cars were run on seperate occasions by different drivers) Take it for what its worth (fastestlaps as source)
I love mustangs cause you cant get that sound when you put flowmasters on one but i own a c6 zo6 and the thing is like riding on a rocket plus i just ordered these D2 forged wheels for it and yes there will be a short video of it up so if you check it out let me no what you think
The best handling Mustang is the current Boss 302 LS. It would be really affordable if Ford dealers wouldn't gouge their customers. About a year ago I had the priviledge of sharing the full course at VIR with the Ford racing team that was tweeking the 302. It was incredible through the turns for a solid axle 3700 lb plus car. The current Z06 is far superior to the one made in 2008. The suspension and tires put it in the performance league with higher-end Ferrari and Porsche models.
@FishyButter Actually its not a mustang its a cobra. Mustang vs. Camaro Cobra vs corvette GTX1 vs. Corvette Stingray sorry but the test is actually informative
@bas949 Drag races are what tests the actual raw power a car posseses. Racetracks are more handling and are not bad to watch. Seeing how much power can be packed into a car to launch it 1300ft in only 10-11 secs is pretty freakin cool.
@godackgudalach1 rated 15/16 city 24/26mpg highway depending on source for the Z06. 14/15 city and 21/23 for the gt500 still depending on source. both cars are pretty good considering the power they put out
$72,125 MSRP for a 2008 ZO6 and $42,330 for a 2008 GT500, if the vette lost I would LMAO. It's a musclecar vs. a budget supercar. There is no comparison between the two. The age old battle has always been between the mustang and the camaro, two musclecars. Lets lighten the stang and make it 7.0 liters also, then it may be fair.
It will still drive like crap even if you lighten the stang. It will need total redesign from ground up. Wheel well needs to accept wider tires, live axle needs to go, center of gravity needs to be lowered, car widened, f/r weight distribution rebalanced.....or just get a corvette 😈
+C6Roadster All you said I can definitely take into consideration; however I don't think I could bring myself to purchase a GM product. The recalls are too high, they can't seem to manage parts vendors, and the brand should have been scrapped instead of bailed out. When CEO's are getting raises from the bailout funds I couldn't do it. Love the New vette though!
Truth be known, I do like the Stangs. Yes, due to moving the plant in 83, no vettes were produced. I had a 82. Iv'e also had 4 Mustangs in my lifetime. A 65,66,69 and gasp, 74! I like the older Stangs the best. I currently have a 1999 Vette, clean, fast and low miles. I bought it for 12,000! Less than 65,000 and babied! Got a helluva deal. What cracks me up, is Stangs that are faster will pull up to the light next to me, but they dont pull all the way up! Intimidated? Yes! It's funny as hell!!
Your right, I guess next time your Vette can try taken on a Focus. Maybe even get fast enough for a Dodge Caliber. I mean since car class makes no difference.
Okay; I once owned an '04 Cobra Mustang, and now I own a '07 Z06. No, the '04 Mustang isn't a 500 GT, I'm just saying, I like both brands. What I don't have in the Z that I had in the Cobra is the whine of the SC. What I have in the Z that I didn't have in the Cobra is, well, a lot. The Z is a race car, looking for street rods to destroy. The Cobra was a hot rod looking for an angle. Straight-line speeds aside, the Z hits the turns in a way that will make most "built for the track" cars blush.
I'd like to see some proof that the ZL1 is better around a track than a 2013 GT500. I know that the brakes fade too fast on the GT500, but Motor Trend tested the Mustang to a faster lap time around Laguna Seca than the ZL1 could manage. That means that the Mustang just needs better brake pads and maybe fluid. It's already a faster track car than the ZL1, it just needs those upgrades to be a better track car.
@shmurly12 they are considered "muscle cars" because they are 1. big 2. powerful and 3. strong, all of which are like a muscle, also when people hear "muscle car" they automatically think of how good most of them are at drag racing, which in most cases does take a lot of power.
@A10thunderbolt231 I am glad you got to attend those, I wish I could. But understand, I am not putting down the Vette. I love the Vette. I am just saying that the Vette and the Mustang are in the same class/league. Especially now as the Mustang has much mora attention from Ford. They have 5.0's that compete with the Vettes and thats a smaller engine for a Stang... I am saying they are equally good.
@chkeene100 That's why I'm not understanding where they got the 85k Mustang price from. With that being said, the 26k price increase of the vette should smoke it in all aspects
@1vdn992 So you take the slowest tested time from a Corvette to the fastest tested time of a Mustang? You ever hear of different conditions, tracks and drivers? Look up Rangers times in the stock ZR1. He gets a perfect launch and shifts as good as anyone. He is also at the dragstrip and not in a parking lot .
Bottom line I am a Mustang guy , that being said price and performance are king. If it costs more it better win ! What else matters ! Mustangs more expensive then corvette’s , well the Mustang better win !
I agree, match up the Mustang vs the Camaro and the Mustang comes out on top always. That's what's important too because that is a direct comparison, apples to apples. The Mustang isn't in competition with the Corvette, that's an apples to oranges comparison. However, when it comes to the Corvette, Ford doesn't have anything that competes with it. As the video shows, even the best, most expensive Mustangs don't stack up to America's true sports car.
You are completely avoiding the point. The 2013 Hasn't been tested by ANY major magazines, not has Ford released any performance data. Not only that, NO ONE has posted any official lap times of GT500. So you can not compare the two with any VALID data to make a real comparison. Well, when the new viper comes out and is tested we will see if it beat a V8 in MPG.
the genesis of the Mustang is the Ford Falcon, although improved through the years, it cannot outrun the constraints of it's original design. It is not a pure sports car, it was never intended on being one. Corvette owns the pedigree of consistency as a pure world class two seater from it's inception. The "one purpose design" does not require "add ons" or gimmicks to compensate for it's limitations. For those that demand verticle purity of design, corvette can be the only choice.
Years ago Ford didn't have $82,000.Mustangs which were priced significantly higher than a Z06 Vette. In effect forcing it to compete with cars in its price range. The ZL1 Camaro is closer to a competitor as far as the class its in but that's not even close competition with 0-60 (3.8 Seconds) and 1/4 Mile(12.1 seconds) priced at $55.000 Its things like this among numerous other things that have discouraged me from being a Ford fan. Hence the LS engine in my foxbody project on my page.
@OgleTorp Also Cayman and Boxster you can buy for less than 50k$ in EU, and still these cars are slower than Renault Megane RS Thropy 265hp cost much less or Ford Focus RS500.
What your really sayin, I wish I had a Vette.. I dont hate Ford's, but I love my Vette. Every dam Ford Stang I had didnt last to long without breakdown.Blew a engine up racing a Vette on I-5 in Washington. Ford I thought was the #1 hated company , well, among us Chevy guys and girls.
@MikeW259 You do realize 700 horsepower is not a good thing right? The Zr1 is currently one of the best handling supercars, and the best supercar for $100-250k price range. 700 HP is not easy to handle, also there's a rumor from autocar that the c7 will be a high revving low horsepower car. I don't support too much horsepower (700) or too low (400), I want the C7 to be a 5.5 liter or smaller producing a bit over 540 horsepower. They should focus more on track rather than a straight line!
@thetravdawg Lol I drive a 2006 Mustang GT but I can appreciate a nice Camaro, Vette, Challenger, and Charger...I think all American Muscle car drivers should ban together and take the ricer boys down

Put some drag tires on that shelby!!! Im curious...
I love corvettes and own one, but the LS7 is far from the best Small block ever!!! Accept for valve guides blowing constantly!!
Both are so American Quality sportcars
The 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C6 as a 505 horsepower naturally aspirated 7.0 liter DOHC louder exhausts sounding engine, while the 2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 in two versions as a 5.4 V8 Supercharged DOHC 500 horsepower louder exhausts engine sounds kinda like that Cadillac STS-V(4.4 V8 Supercharged 476 horsepower) or same rumble like that
@1vdn992 Seventh the engine rattles. I don't know why, but it does. It could easily be the premiums engine cover, but it makes a noise, especially in 3rd.
Eighth when first turned on in the morning the car is idling at 1.5k rpm. I read it has something to do with a air sensors.
@ShepperdOneill A charger has 4 doors do you mean a Challenger?
@m6205 I've actually heard it handles better, and it is a little lighter to my understanding.
Your meme should be called "1vdn992 dah Ford fanboy". You by far surpassed any fanboy in HISTORY of any automaker.
@LimeStangGt You talking about the one they dont make anymore? I dont think it can out do the ZR1, numbers wise it might be an even challenge to the Z06..but we will never know cause they dont make it anymore :(
@Claybreaker2 Really? I see WAY more challengers than corvettes, and why did you put 22's on a performance car?
You're forgetting the displacement is greater on ls motors?? Can't tell if serious..
@fordfan197 If you have to change the whole car to compete with the ZO6 then why not just buy one instead. Vette is lower, wider, and has 50/50 weight distribution. What are you gonna do next; chop the top?
@thunderup86 anything about nissan or honda trucks? i can believe most of what u said just wanted to know your poinion about nissan or honda trucks
@nbmblownZ My how times have changed, the 505 hp ZO7 now has a price as tested of $105,000 and the 2013 GT500 with 650 hp is $60,000
I can't think of a more archaic engine design than a normally aspirated push-rod V8 with cast internals.
So edmond what was the pay off ???
@G0Far right on i prefer classics over the new cars these days any time my personal favorite is the 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback
same 5.4 thats in the lightning and the GT?
@1vdn992 So it takes a car that is 5 years newer to beat the Z06, which was released in 2007? Great showing there.
That's cool, my friends was driven by the designer of the new G.T.350!
@1vdn992 the 2011 and 2012 bentley mulsanne also likes its smallblock too.
@chkeene100 Correct, but the KR is not the super snake. The KR is only about 50k
@OgleTorp
''GT3 Rs costs twice as much as the Zo6'' - yes in US, not in EU. Like I said before, standard 2006 ZO6 is lower than GT3 RS at Ring. But 2012 Zo6 is ultimate track car, with full package (same as ZR1), runs very easily 7:22
Prices claimed by GM in EU would be: 105k$ for 2012 ZO6, 135k$ for ZR1.
Hey do you know what ford means?
Its FIX OR REPAIR DAILY
@TheHm3 Late 2011-mid 2012.
@santos9400 there's a point if ur talking about the ford gt not the stang gt500 kr
Not once you put a set of brake pads on the Shelby. Not to mention that the GT500 beats the ZL1 around Laguna Seca in terms of best lap time.
I love mustangs cause you cant get that sound when you put flowmasters on one but i own a c6 zo6 and the thing is like riding on a rocket plus i just ordered these D2 forged wheels for it and yes there will be a short video of it up so if you check it out let me no what you think
Love that supercharger song
The best handling Mustang is the current Boss 302 LS. It would be really affordable if Ford dealers wouldn't gouge their customers.
About a year ago I had the priviledge of sharing the full course at VIR with the Ford racing team that was tweeking the 302. It was incredible through the turns for a solid axle 3700 lb plus car.
The current Z06 is far superior to the one made in 2008. The suspension and tires put it in the performance league with higher-end Ferrari and Porsche models.
They are both nice cars, the only real problem is the price tag on the Mustang. Price if dropped by about 25k would be about right for that car.
@FishyButter Actually its not a mustang its a cobra.
Mustang vs. Camaro
Cobra vs corvette
GTX1 vs. Corvette Stingray
sorry but the test is actually informative
@definingimage I know, was just letting you know what car they were probably referring to
@bas949 Drag races are what tests the actual raw power a car posseses.
This Shelby was $79,995.
@swyzzlestyx It's not just a mustang its a GT500KR they both have about 500 hp crank I thought it was a good comparison.
I took the gt500 just because of the back seats. Its a pretty impresive car believe or not
I don't know what stats you checked, but I'm talking about a 2013 GT500 vs a 2012 ZL1. There can't be any argument there.
@2012GT500Supersnake you are right the shelby puts out 610 hp with 550 torque and reach 100km (60mph)in 3.5 seconds
@gamefreak2316 Same what year is yours? (:
@1vdn992 So you take the slowest tested time from a Corvette to the fastest tested time of a Mustang? You ever hear of different conditions, tracks and drivers? Look up Rangers times in the stock ZR1. He gets a perfect launch and shifts as good as anyone. He is also at the dragstrip and not in a parking lot .
Bottom line I am a Mustang guy , that being said price and performance are king. If it costs more it better win ! What else matters ! Mustangs more expensive then corvette’s , well the Mustang better win !
Z06 all day and you still have $10k leftover for tune and other upgrades:)
@joshbethaking check the ubb mustang 1000hp priced at around $110 grand just saying they should race the zr1 and that and see who wins
My friends Super Snake eats Grand Sport's for breakfast, Z06's for lunch, and ZR1's for dinner! With the occasional Callaway for desert!
Hard to believe this was 10 yrs ago
@OgleTorp
Also Cayman and Boxster you can buy for less than 50k$ in EU, and still these cars are slower than Renault Megane RS Thropy 265hp cost much less or Ford Focus RS500.
