How to copy files to Raspberry Pi over Network from Windows

  • This video will show you how to copy even large files to your Raspberry Pi from Windows, and from the Pi to Windows.
    I am using the Raspberry Pi 3B+: amzn.to/2Tnsc0l and recommend using a 2.5A minimum power supply, such as: amzn.to/2G0wcku I usually use whatever SD cards I can get cheaply, but recommend minimum 8GB and class 10, here's an example of a good cheap option: amzn.to/2MHJkvb If you need recommendations for good compatible Pi hardware just leave a comment below.
    First, go on your Raspberry Pi, open the terminal, and type in ifconfig and hit enter. This will give you a list of the network interfaces, and their IP addresses. Find the interface you are using (likely eth0 for wired, wlan0 for wireless) and write down the IP address.
    Then in the terminal, type sudo raspi-config and hit enter. Then go down to interfacing options, and hit enter. Then scroll to SSH and hit enter, and arrow to yes, and hit enter one more time. Then just go to finish to go back to the terminal.
    Then go to your windows computer, and download winscp. You can get this from www.ninite.com
    Open winscp, and put in the Raspberry Pi IP address in the hostname, and the Raspberry Pi username and password. Because you have enabled SSH, it is highly recommended to change the password from the default pi/raspberry.
    Next just hit login, and it will take you to a Window with two file structures. The one on the left is Windows, and the one on the right is the Pi. Simply navigate to the file you want to transfer, and then drag it to where you want it to copy on the other side, and it will copy it over. Large files may take a few minutes, but overall the process should be very fast.

    Thank you so much. This advice was awesome and "on point". Up until now, whenever I wanted to add files to my "Pi" I had to disconnect a monitor and keyboard just to use it and then.... what a headache. This made things so much easier. I use Plex for my music streaming and it worked perfectly. thanks again.

    Another easy way to do this is with the xrdp, RDP server on the Pi. After you RDP connect to the Pi, the desktop shows a folder: 'thinclient_drives'; this can be mapped to your Windows C: drive, from the Windows RDP client settings / options. Be sure to turn off the Printer sharing, before turning on the C: share. A bug in xrdp prevents drive mapping from working if printer sharing is turned on.

    Is there a way to automate this process? Using a scripting language? Was thinking of implementing this but wanted some kind of pointer.

    • @howtwos101
      @howtwos101  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely, there are many options and depend on if you want to run the script from the Windows side or the Linux side. The most agnostic method to do it would be Python, because then you could utilize and almost identical script on both systems. Almost any other mainstream programming language would have SCP support as well. You could also quite easily accomplish it through Bash scripting on the Pi, I think it would be a bit more difficult to implement on the Windows side with batch/powershell scripting, but likely still possible.

      @@abreezy1st Can you connect it to the non-guest wifi? That would make it simplest, or to also connect the Pi with Ethernet. If they are not on the same local network (a local network can have both Wifi and Ethernet) then this process becomes much more difficult, involving port forwarding and public IP addresses.
