  • In this restored footage of "James Taylor In Concert," James performs "Rainy Day Man" on the popular BBC series "In Concert" on November 16, 1970.
"In Concert" was produced by the BBC in the early '70s and featured performances from legendary acts of the time. In November 1970, James was 22 years old and his second studio album, "Sweet Baby James," had released earlier that same year. “Rainy Day Man“ first appeared on James's debut album, "James Taylor" (1968).

LYRICS - Rainy Day Man - James Taylor
What good is that happy lie
All you wanted from the start was to cry
    It looks like another fall
Your good friends they don’t seem to help at all
When you’re feeling kind of cold and small
Just look up your rainy day man
It does you no good to pretend child
You’ve made a hole much too big to mend
And it looks like you lose again, my friend
Call on your rainy day man
Now rainy day man he don’t like sunshine
    He don’t chase rainbows
    He don’t need good times
    Grey days rolling
    Then you’ll see him
    Empty feeling
    Now you need him
All those noble thoughts they just don’t belong
You can’t hide the truth with a happy song
And since you knew where you stood all along
Just look up your rainy day man
Now simple pleasures they all evade you
Store-bought treasures none can save you
Look for signs to ease the pain
    Ask again
Go on and pray for rain
    It looks like another fall
Your good friends they don’t seem to help at all
When you’re feeling kind of cold and small
Just look up your rainy day man
All I need to do is look up my rainy day man
Now what good is that happy lie
All you wanted from the start was to cry

One of his greatest songs. He hasn't been a staple in my life cause I only like his first three records. But they were so good before he got off Heroin. After that he sang sad songs with a happy smile, how disconcerting.

I’m so glad he lives right down the Massachusetts Turnpike from me, in a beautiful little town called Lennox, and he has a summer home on Cape Cod where I live. Every summer’s end, he gives two concerts at Tanglewood in Lennox. We go every year as my son lives in the next town over, Pittsfield and Lee, MA. He is one of the few who sounds just as great as when he first started singing. I’ve always wanted to meet him as he seems to be a wonderful person to have a relaxed conversation. I do love James.

Sublime. Thanks so much for sharing this. I have to tell you now, before either of us gets too old, there are countless acoustic guitarists whom I admire but there are only three whose sound alone moves me. Cat Stevens, Greg Lake and your good self. As confirmed by this clip, it really has nothing to do with the equipment or even the sound engineer. It IS YOU, your commitment and your connection to the instrument. (I've seen your video about the extreme lengths you go to in order to prepare your nails.) The amazing sound you garner from those six strings, allied to the warmth, fragility, unique tone and honesty in your voice is simply astounding. Even my fave all-time artiste Neil Young, who also recorded a great set for the BBC In Concert in 1970, pales by comparison. Thank YOU for the music and giving it to me 💞

“Rainy Day Man” (1967) "The "rainy-day man" was a dope connection. I had taken my first opiate in 1966. Joel "Bishop" O'Brien, the drummer in the Flying Machine, was an addict. I spent a lot of time at his apartment, so it was just a matter of time before I tried heroin. I was pretty much born to shoot dope - it was the key to my lock, so I really was gone for the next 20 years." Rolling Stone Interview

RAINY DAY MAN -- picking at the start that alludes to a late 60's 'British Invasion' hit Needles & Pins. You must be 'of an age' (early 70's) to spot such things! A haunting melody simultaneously simple yet complex: Opening in B-major, sliding down to E-natural for the main chorus. Oh yes, and James Taylor's life-long specialty - beautiful bridges. (Especially love the one that slips into A-Flat minor.)
Classic never-out-of-date finger-style picking throughout - deceptively simple, with just a few hammer-ons (hammers-on?) for embellishment. The Devil's in the details. God too, right?
Don't you just love it, when this 22 year old singer unleashes the full power of that young baritone voice - if only for a phrase or two (around the 2:04 mark) “Ask again, child! Pray for rain!”
Thanks James Taylor for sharing this one. Another gem to delight us for the very first time - exactly 50 years on.
