I met this lovely woman! My bucket list wish came true! It was 2007 in Miami after a small benefit concert. I had flown from California thinking this was my last chance to see her in concert, as I had been always too busy and she rarely performed. I hung around till after the benefit party was over and when she was leaving, she greeted me with a hug! And a signature on her set list AND a picture posed with her, taken by my daughter who had come with me. Carly is truly a warm and gracious person. And her music has blessed so many people through the years. ❤️
My 9th grade art teacher at Cascade highschool in Everett, Washington dated her at least once. She came and met our class because they had a lunch date later that day. This was a long time ago.
Read her book "Touched by the Sun: My Friendship with Jackie" -- You will get a few surprises about her. And they come through her own words, not written by another person.
The folk festival..... She is also a talker like Carly and very poetic and a writer she was one of the organizers of floydfest outside of Roanoke Virginia
It's clear that she has had time to think through and process these events that may have felt like a whirlwind when they first happened I am happy for her clarity and that she has come to peace in her life.
Not sure if she is honest with herself. Having been in a similar situation, I knew that alcohol gave my husband more joy than I could. I kind of looked at alcohol as his mistress. Carly liked James when he was drinking, but it was the alcohol that changed his mood, not his love for Carly. How I wished that my husband looked forward to seeing me after work as much as he anticipated that first drink. We talked about it and he recognized it, he once asked me “ do you think I like being like this?” I answered “yes “.
@@HighlanderNorth1 You must be right. Thinking of Mike Wallace and how he ignored his son, Chris, who went into the same career, maybe to earn his father's love, and never got it. Then I read about nasty questions Chris Wallace asked of Adam Driver about his appearance. ("Has not looking like Robert Redford hindered your career?") And I was so sad, because I had really loved Chris Wallace' work up until then.
I loved someone that I couldn't live with but couldn't live without. I used to sing You're So vain to him all the time. We were together for forty years and he passed away three years ago. You sure do learn to forgive a lot when someone is sick. I miss him every day. I sincerely feel for you, Ms. Carly.
From all accounts, Carly Simon is a magical, wonderful human being. She has the remarkable ability to talk about painful subjects without seeming bitter. She embodies compassion and empathy.

Believe me when I tell you.Carly had her own addictions and afflictions.Long before she met Taylor. Just research her behavior in the 70's. Taylor never bashes her.He could. He is a gentleman .His life remains happily private today.
Outstandingly honest in the sight of the entire world. This woman is not ordinary. She would be an extraordinary friend I believe, if one functions well in such intensity.
if one functions well in such intensity. - what a great, sensitive observation. And agree Carly is extraordinary. I got more into her music and life after I read the book "Girls Like Us" a few years ago.

@@1asset Many people have to be taken in small but valuable doses, like medicine. At least that is what I have discovered in life. Very creative people are self- absorbed, which may be what she means by self-centered. Needy people tend to feel rejected by those creative self-absorbed types. People sort of filter away, or learn timing with the creatives, and stay in their lives. I guess you and I will never know cuz she isn`t in our lives. Enjoy your day.
I loved hearing Carly and James singing together. Both of them had such unusually beautiful voices that blended so well. It’s a shame their marriage didn’t work out, and they no longer speak to each other.
His heroin addiction was really bad. It ruined his good looks. He was on methadone and may still be. No one blamed her when they divorced. She probably saved her own life.
Carly relates so well about her relationship with James Taylor. The sense of messiness, misunderstanding, confusion, needs/desires, failures, stubbornness, regrets. It’s very much too bad addictions interfered with their lives, undoubtedly their children’s lives as well. And time passes, people move on and that time together is history. They both gave us such wonderful music, together and separately, grateful for that.
It was probably different personality that didn't want to "compromise" that came to an end of their marriage. However, Carly still has feelings and loved how she danced around with him while on stage while they celebrated their songs together. It is sad. However, I heard drugs usage by him which caused further damage to their marriage, which is impossible to stay together. I know I wouldn't want drugs in my house if one has children which they did.
In case anyone is wondering if she's really this humble & genuine...I can confirm she is. I live on MV and sold her a faucet for her claw foot tub...she actually told me her name when I was entering her info into computer. I was like...I know Carly, I know :)
I was biking on MV & she was gardening - We both just smiled & said "Hello", then went back to what we were doing. She seemed happy to be be out with her flowers. 🙂
Two friends of my brother were hitchhiking back to Boston from Cape Cod in the mid 70s, and a Mercedes pulled over to pick them up. The driver was Carly Simon, and they said she was really down to earth and chatty.
For me, Carly Simon was a rare musician/singer/songwriter who captured my curiosity and captivated my heart. I was about 12-13 when I began listening to her on the radio and watching her televised performances. I became smitten and then totally lovestruck by her physical and artistic beauty which I tucked away as wonderful childhood memories. After watching the full interview, I felt those memories come alive with a renewed sense of warmth and affection. Thank you Carly! 💖🌹💖
My big brother had her albums in his bedroom. I would always sneak in there when he was away to idolize Carly's 'No Secrets' and "Anticipation" album's. And at just (11) years old I would also come to realize I was gay for the first time of my life. At (60) i still an gay and always will be, I guess.
I was also a kid and I wanted to have that giant mouth of her. Hahaaa I am a little "mouthy" but not as big as Carly's. And I can't sing even the happy birthday so nothing in common. 😂😂😂
Thank you so much for making this interview happen ❤️. I just loved watching Dan Rather doing what he does best along with the amazing Ms. Simon. Please have Dan interview more of these legends before they slip away.
She probably understands her ex better than most people. That's why she's so compassionate. Depression runs in his family (from what I read in interviews). His started in his teens, hanging with the wrong people, stress, etc. had him institutionalized a couple of times. I'm sure she knew his history and tried to help him along, but it's a hard task and a person can only cope so much. And there's always the children to protect.
Such a bittersweet interview. She's so gracious and warm...very sad that she and JT don't have any kind of relationship now. They share children and grandchildren, which should be enough to at least have some friendly contact with each other at the very least. I recently watched some video of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in the 1980s, playing in the pool with their first grandchild. They were obviously delighted with the little one, and it was also obvious that the two of them still had a great deal of affection for one another, despite being married to other people.
Yes- I have seen that Video of Lucy and Desi. I think they eventually settled on a brother/sister type of relationship so they could peacefully co-grandparent the grandkids. TBH, I think they were both “Alpha” types who should not have been together. Both of them ended up marrying less dominant personalities and had better marriages.
Donna, I was reading your response and got to the end of the first paragraph and my first thought was I wish they could be like Lucy and Desi. I then realized you had a second paragraph. I saw the footage of them in the pool years and years ago, and affection between them was so obvious and I was so touched by it that I remember it to this day!
Dan Rather is such an amazing interviewer! He summarizes in a way that gently leads the subject to delve deeper in whatever direction they wish. Amazing skill that!
What an evolved lovely soul she is. I wish her all the peace and love in the world. Thank you for the soundtracks and tunes throughout the years. I think I speak for so many generations when I say Carly Simon is a NATIONAL TREASURE!!
She comes across as extremely open and honest person and does not appear at all guarded or reserved. Love her singing voice. I can almost hear, “you are so vain”.
I have just lately come to here Carly Simon's music that she sang or recorded on the queen Mary. God she is an amazing star and singer/artist. Her quality voice and emotion that she performs every song with is just so heartfelt and her passion and attractiveness. She is so sexy my husband says and I agree. Amazing voice I can just keep on listening to.
What a touching, sincere testimony! She's looking great, by the way. Both are amazing artists and human beings.Thank you so much for this powerful, meaningful upload.
She seems like a lovely person. I catch her energy in this interview and think if I were to ever meet her I’d feel comfortable straight away. Love her music without a doubt.
I totally get that about her still loving him. Someone asked me once whether I still loved my ex. I said, every day of my life. Can't live with him, can't live without him
I have always liked JT's music, and I gained a great deal of respect for him as a person when my brother told me about meeting him. My brother was a chef, and he prepared the meal for JT's band when they were doing a concert in my brother's city. After the meal was served, JT came back to the kitchen and personally thanked each of the kitchen crew for a great dinner. That a notable star would take the time to thank people that are never recognized says something great about who that person is.
That's very nice but....anyone who thanks the chef is notable. He's nothing special simply because he plays the guitar and sings. Don't praise him because he was grateful for good food. Maybe the chef's talent was appreciated by everyone in the restaurant!
@@Belfastboi Thank you for the bitterness and insult. A point that seems to fly over your head is that the reason I have respect for this gesture is that people who travel with entourages, press agents, groupies, and support staff tend to live in an entitlement bubble. It is rare that they step OFF the pedestal. I am not elevating JT because he was gracious. I am simply acknowledging an action that demonstrated he is not a self absorbed prick, and his action brought joy to several people who rarely experience it. He went out of his way to do so, and it was unexpected and appreciated. When was the last time you attended a catered diner and afterwards went out of your way to go back to the kitchen and thank the staff?
I always fasten my seatbelt before these Dan Rather interviews, knowing they will tread on deep emotional ground in the most intimate way. While they might ride a fine line between journalism and psychotherapy, one thing’s for sure. I will emerge loving and admiring the interviewee, and interviewer even more.
I loved their music at the same time, thought it was so cool they were married in the '70s. I didn't think she ever stopped loving JT, which is wonderful too. She's still a beautiful person.
Dan Rather is the best interviewer! I miss seeing more of him. How sad that Carly and James produced two children yet they do not speak now. I would hope they could find more ways to to not only connect with Carly but with their children as well by at least going to his son Ben's house and be bridge builders for their posterity.
I do agree while heatedly with you, BUT I am in the same race. It is one that no one ever wins. WE want for them but WE have no say in the matter. God Bless Them Both.
As a dad it is unacceptable that he never visits his son at home. How petty and mean!!!! I don't care how talented he is, and l've been a fan for decades, on a human level I have grown to dislike JT...he has brought problems on himself.
He won’t forgive her for speaking and writing candidly about their relationship. She shared some pretty low moments when they were together, which could alter one’s opinion of James. But, she lived it and has a right to share it. I appreciate both of them for their talents.
I really love the way Carly asks questions of Rather, the interviewer. I don't think I've ever heard a famous person being interviewed who asks questions back to the interviewer. Makes for a very honest, and close conversation, almost like with friends. Carly comes across as quite lovable if you ask me.
I truly admire both James Taylor and Carly Simon for both of their contributions to the music industry. Whatever personal issues occured between them in their marriage is basically in the past.
If I could grant them that wish, I would. Two of my very favorite people. I was elated when I heard they got married, and I cried when they split up. But I always cry when a friends' relationships ends.
A friend of mine once saw Simon & Taylor come into a bar in Mendocino. They had been picked up by the bar owner. The two were hitchhiking. In the bar the couple offered to play in exchange for a place to stay and a meal. The owner didn’t recognize them and said he’d have to hear them play first to see if they were any good. The two walked out. My friend informed her boss who had just walked out. The look on his face was priceless by her account.
Two celebrities - specifically, the two most famous singers in the U.S. throughout the 1970s - were hitchhiking through Mendocino without the means to secure a meal and place to stay? Got it!
For whatever reason when the interviewer asked Carly if she still loved James and she said absolutely it just gave me a feel good moment. It's nice to hear after all they've been through that she still loves him....
Dan surprised me here by how well he conducted this interview. He very gracefully invited her to "go there" despite not really wanting to at first. I was very surprised hearing at the end of this clip that she still loves him... and that was painful or me to see and hear. I have not read any biographical books on her or Taylor. But somehow I thought she'd gone on to remarry. They are both music gods in my book. And these kinds of creative couples, I mean real musicians and songwriters, not today's hip hop formulaic crap, just often meet this fate where tangled spirits and energies end up not meshing. Musically, James Taylor's music to me goes way back in time, is timebound, nostalgiac, and for me never provokes new thoughts or emotions; just recalling how I experienced them when initially released. . I still throw an edge to Carly because her songs were ambitious, mysterious, always so beautifully produced and from a new point of view. So for me more interesting musically. I also feel that her catalogue is less timebound by era, and I can re-experience her songs as fresh, as though recorded last week.
Interesting point about JT‘s music being time bound and hers being more ambitious and still fresh over time. It does feel like in some ways that so much of his power was about honestly and simply expressing some of the dark sides of life and hers more about potential and possibility. Thanks for helping me to recognize that consciously, very interesting. And I can also see that as one of the underlying dynamics that could be pretty hard to reconcile. Perhaps she wanted to move forward in relationship and in life, and he really needed to just be where he was.
@@DanielBarberMusic Your thoughts are equally stimulating: "JT honestly and simply expressing some of the dark sides of life and hers more about potential and possibility." That's a completely separate paradigm and fascinating to contemplate. "Pretty hard to reconcile: perhaps she wanted to move forward in relationship and in life, and he really needed to just be where he was." ... You're getting at levels that are beyond my knowledge of the two of them. I don't have any idea how self-actualized or comfortable with therapy James has been or is - maybe quite a lot and I just have no info on that. Carly has always seemed like someone constantly aware of her feelings and personal growth.
@@DanielBarberMusic yes, unfortunately you cannot move forward at all in relationship with an addict ... the addiction pulls them away from any authentic communication and anaesthesizes the need for it, preferring instead to withdraw. She sure is a tender soul with a heart that probably is a bit too needy for any human to be able to fill. Such a lovely interview, both are beautiful people.
So many can relate to this interview, myself included, having been in the same situation When you are an empath involved with someone who has a addiction, the addiction becomes their relationship as they withdraw from intimacy. You try to make it work, but once outside the relationship, realize it's their story, and you can't fix it, or expect they can change. James is a gifted musician, always have loved Carlys music. She is very honest, and has a beautiful.soul that shines through.
Deeply soulful lyrics, Taylor and Simon have penned and expressed musically, and the ability to see yourself and those close around you and eloquently articulate it screams of something: These are evolved human beings.
I read her book a while back and saw this complete interview. Heart on her sleeve like me. I remember when they married, it was a big deal. When her marriage was failing with James, she wrote about the moment she was to confront his mistress at his other apartment. My heart broke for her and I know exactly how it feels to love someone who doesn't love you back the same and cheats. (All the things they should give you go to someone else). I can relate to Carly and having that feeling of needing to be connected to people in that way. She even felt bad for Joni later after James left her and was with Carly. I have been with two men who are alcoholics and they are impossible to be with. I am myself a recovered alcoholic for well over 3 decades now. But it still doesn't make the journey with an alcoholic any easier, knowing all about being there. It is sad that he won't relent and just get over it and visit her and their son.
Great interview. Carly seems to be both an empath and an enabler. Being with an addict and fighting your own demons with drugs is so destructive. You must separate in order to save yourselves. That doesn't mean they don't love each other it simply means that love wasn't enough.
Yes, it's very hard to fix a dependency issue when the person dependent has no interest or intention of fixing the problem. That seems to have been the case with James at the time, which is a terrible tragedy.
@@bernlin2000 I so agree...I was married to a heavy drinker and I kept trying to fix him while I was miserable every day. When we divorced, I kept thinking it was something I did wrong. I enabled it until we divorced....now he's with a new drinker who doesn't give him grief about it. Another enabler....
It is extremely difficult to have a relationship with a person who has addictions that you don't have. They are beholden to their addiction, it always comes first, so you will not be able to get closer to them than their desired and enveloping substances.
I met her too, during her Boys In The Trees book tour. She was so engaging and kind….so many of us there had named our daughters for her, and she seemed genuinely touched by that. It was a dream come true for me to finally be able to tell her how much her music meant to me. She still loves James and she always will.
She’s so open, insightful and wise. It truly is an intimate conversation between 2 intelligent open mature humans. I miss this since the internet took us over.
Dan Rather and his wife came into were I work. Everyone said "DON'T BOTHER HIM, DON'T TALK TO HIM!!!" It's a Crate and Barrel store. He's in his hometown of Houston. I found him sitting off to the side. I walked up and he stood up, introduced himself and shook my hand like a Southern gentleman. We chatted briefly and I let him know how much he means to so many people. Very, very down to earth and extremely gracious.
Sweet Baby James lives in Massachussettes and he has changed his life for the better and Carly you are a beautiful soul whom had to travel your journey to learn about self love! My sister who lives there says he is very kind. Gratitude for the two great legands of their time that are still living and able to sing.... I pray that you two heal your Karmic connections...... Stay safe always!!! True fan!!!
I've always loved Carly. Like her, I pull people in with my energy. Like her I married and had sons with a man who couldn't get a mature hold on his feelings. Unfortunately, it's the kids who suffer most from these situations. Peace to all of these bruised hearts.💞
It is not in the nature of an artist to get" a mature hold" on their feelings! Quite the opposite. it's unfortunate what happened in this class of the Titans marriage. But later with sobriety I think James has grown a great deal. He has proven himself to be a wonderful husband and father and a family man witch sadly he was not able to be on his first marriage. And so it goes…
Watched the whole interview on AXS TV; great interview! Her music, her voice…so iconic to a certain time, and definitely music I grew up on. Thank you to Dan Rather, who’s interviews like this I love, and to Carly Simon, for her honesty and the music. Was sad to hear her and James never found a peaceful place with each other.
Twenty five years from now, people will sadly not take time to learn about the true musical heroes of the past, or even care to recognize their names. I know many in music history from 100 years back, but society moves too swiftly now for the depth of human connection and understanding with which Carly and Dan are speaking here. This interview is epic.
I saw a video of James singing "You Can Close Your Eyes" with Carly watching and listening in their cottage on the Vineyard. I could see by Carly watching him how greatly she admires James. Since then I have immediately fell in love with that song. Such a beautiful and yet heartwrenchinley sad song from my understanding of the lyrics.
I dated a addict. The ups and downs will nearly take you away....I had to go for a respite after helping drive my ex drugk brother to chemo for both lung and pancreatic cancer..nine times a day he'd call me to talk about Jesus to get me yo take him yo the liquor store Its killed pur friendship...he won't take my calls all his friends are addicts. I'm do done
She's very bighearted and generous. Honest and warm. Someone who is cold aloof and hostile doesn't belong in her life. Her talent is no less that Taylor's. She doesn't need to put him on a pedestal if she isn't willing to do the same for herself. Obviously he doesn't want behind closed doors known which is why he stays away from her. Putting the past in the past where it belongs is beneficial for both.
I don't know why you think JT needs to keep in touch with his ex wife.. hell, they divorced for a reason. Seems like she wanted more affection. Didn't she notice this before they married? As for previous drug use, she was no angle herself.

I’m glad I watched this. I was impressed by Carly’s openness and candor. One tends to think that being married to or dating a musician would be so wonderful but it’s really a tough life that not many couples are able to navigate successfully. Adding drugs into the mix certainly doesn’t help. She seems like a nice lady and pretty grounded.
Exactly. She gives me an obsessive personality and stalker impression. Like she was always possessively there, needing persistent validation from him. Obviously I could be wrong..haha.
She reminds me of one of my aunts. When I was 10-11 years old when her song, "That's the Way I Always Heard it Would Be", came out was easy for me to visualize in my mind. It made me feel so melancholy, but I love it every time I hear it. I am a book nerd. When I found out her father was the Simon of Simon and Schuster it was more fascinating for me as a child.
I worked at the movie studio that released Working Girl. Carly Simon did the theme song for that movie. Anyway, I was talking to her on the phone one day and I said, "You know, that theme song is just so great. I love it!" And she goes, "Really??" lol Like a little kid who was really shocked. I had to laugh and I said that of course it was and it fit the movie perfectly--that it's an anthem. She was so humble and so genuinely appreciative. I'll always love her.
I absolutely understand this kind of love. True love never dies, it really doesn't, my true love has been gone 20 years this year and I love him just as much as I did the day he died💕 Its's beautiful but so unfair because I have never been able to move on, I will never be with someone else.
Honestly, please don't write off what I;m saying, it's not platitude or escape: What a blessing that you had such a love. But God your Good Dad would love to bring more love and beauty in your life. If you would become willing to trust Him with it all, and by Him I mean Jesus, He will bring you to a new promised land. Might take a long time, but the journey is worth it. When Jesus said, "I AM the Way the Truth, and the Life," that was God speaking. Jesus has to be our life, not a person. No person has the capacity to be the lifesource for another. Only the creator can handle that. (God is a Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but Jesus is included. When you see Him as He truly is, God in the flesh, it opens your eyes.)
I like Carly even more now. Never say WHOA to honesty like this. She used her heart when talking about it as well. What a great way to open up a topic and even larger - - - to be able to expand thought on a topic like she just did. Love Carly!!!
Carly is a wonderful soul. I got to meet her in Los Angeles at a music business seminar. I respect her and love her music. I am also a big fan of James Taylor's music. I think they both are good people.
Using Drugs and alcohol (heavily) are equal to having an affair outside the marriage- the addiction is #1 when the spouse should be. It's pain unlike any other pain- what's worse? the addict couldn't care less-they are numb!!! I feel for Carly, I do...did she know of his addictions before marriage? Curious. Carly & James are wonderful artists regardless. Addiction is a real killer in every sense of the word- kills everything.
People didn't understand or talk about addiction then like they do now....there were few treatment alternatives, only AA. And drugs were "cool"....you could be shunned by the music crowd for speaking out against them. The WW2 crowd were all addicted to cigarettes and alcohol. Just like today, everyone is addicted to medications, alcohol, pot, etc......I love it when they say pot isn't addictive.....sure.....
So interesting to hear her talk about this- we all saw it play out but of course had no idea of their personal struggles. What an amazingly talented couple they were.
I have a James Taylor in my history. Not the actual one, but someone I loved so deeply and so badly. And he went away. We actually managed to stay friends for 17 more years (we met at 18, were together 7 years). Stephen abruptly cut off communication with me because he's married to someone who's very jealous - this I learned from a mutual friend - who made him choose between her and our friendship. I'm now 67 and can say I still love him, not in a romantic way, but from a deep and innocent place. I've tried a couple of times to reach out to him but, I guess to his credit, he's kept his promise to his wife. I feel sad that these two people cannot reconnect in a new way from who they are today. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge and they're both approaching the end of their life. My hope for them is that they find a new friendship before it's too late.
When James was asked to talk about their marriage, he simply said he was too young to have married then. And I. Was thinking, well you DID get married and had two beautiful children, and you threw it all away because you couldn’t emotionally connect with her because your drug habit was more important. God, what an idiot he was. And he married a bunch more times and none of them worked out either....so you cannot blame Carly...she always loved you and you threw it away...disgusting, is it any wonder I don’t trust men?

The folk festival..... She is also a talker like Carly and very poetic and a writer she was one of the organizers of floydfest outside of Roanoke Virginia
Carly is always so honest. How can you not love that???!!!

How can you say goodbye to your soulmate forever?
Carly relates so well about her relationship with James Taylor. The sense of messiness, misunderstanding, confusion, needs/desires, failures, stubbornness, regrets. It’s very much too bad addictions interfered with their lives, undoubtedly their children’s lives as well. And time passes, people move on and that time together is history. They both gave us such wonderful music, together and separately, grateful for that.
She’s very honest and not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve.

Ditto
I was about that age when I first heard of Carly. Always did like her, never got to see her live tho.
My big brother had her albums in his bedroom. I would always sneak in there when he was away to idolize Carly's 'No Secrets' and "Anticipation" album's. And at just (11) years old I would also come to realize I was gay for the first time of my life. At (60) i still an gay and always will be, I guess.
I was about 6yrs old, but I feel the same way. I just love her!❤
I was also a kid and I wanted to have that giant mouth of her. Hahaaa I am a little "mouthy" but not as big as Carly's.
And I can't sing even the happy birthday so nothing in common. 😂😂😂
She seems so open, honest, genuine, and articulate. And she's still so beautiful. What a remarkable woman.
I feel for Carly Simon, she is so brutally honest in front of so many. I have listened and loved her for over 50 years.

Thank you so much for making this interview happen ❤️. I just loved watching Dan Rather doing what he does best along with the amazing Ms. Simon. Please have Dan interview more of these legends before they slip away.
What a perfectly frank interview by Carly Simon. I am really amazed and admire her sincerity and honesty about her relationship with James Taylor.
Naw, just another MENOPAUSAL wo-MAN who's pissed she hit the wall
Pois é,muito triste isso!!
Funny, before I scrolled down to see the second paragraph of the original post, I thought to myself “like Lucy and Desi.”
There are some couples that just shouldn't be married. But, when they divorce, they are the best of friends and get along splendidly.

Got it!

@@MothGirl007well she has. You can still love someone and not want to be with them.
I was not to surprised to hear she Still Loved him . God loves us all , we can still love our Ex’s
All my Ex’s live in Texas 👍🏻
Interesting point about JT‘s music being time bound and hers being more ambitious and still fresh over time. It does feel like in some ways that so much of his power was about honestly and simply expressing some of the dark sides of life and hers more about potential and possibility. Thanks for helping me to recognize that consciously, very interesting. And I can also see that as one of the underlying dynamics that could be pretty hard to reconcile. Perhaps she wanted to move forward in relationship and in life, and he really needed to just be where he was.
@@DanielBarberMusic Your thoughts are equally stimulating:
"JT honestly and simply expressing some of the dark sides of life and hers more about potential and possibility." That's a completely separate paradigm and fascinating to contemplate.
Carly has always seemed like someone constantly aware of her feelings and personal growth.
high, stoned, no energy..that wrecks intimacy
When you love someone you just love them no matter what. Even if they cheat you love them. It's ok to let them cheat.
Great stuff. You must have enjoyed her music as much as I did.
She’s great. Wish her all the happiness in the world.

It is extremely difficult to have a relationship with a person who has addictions that you don't have. They are beholden to their addiction, it always comes first, so you will not be able to get closer to them than their desired and enveloping substances.

Marrying a rock star with addiction issues … what could go wrong 🙄
not really "rock"
Weren’t both of them in the same category?
..with active addiction issues.
Many many people are addicts - not everyone is active in their addiction.
she seems really honest.
Great comment!
His music-- speaks for him --Behind every door there will be a person there-- Standing in the dark with there own -- thoughts
I don't often find profound thoughts on TH-cam. Your comment was an unexpected pleasure. Thank you.
Exactly. She gives me an obsessive personality and stalker impression. Like she was always possessively there, needing persistent validation from him. Obviously I could be wrong..haha.
I love how she genuinely asked Dan “what would you do” and he genuinely replied back “I’m not sure.”
☺️
Interesting conversation about the end of a marriage. I can respect her honesty.
I actually told James Taylor yesterday I would love to see him do a concert with Carly! He smiled, said 👍 nice.
I’m sure she’d love to know this, perhaps it’s a sign of his softening
He’s a Scorpio, perhaps keeps his cards close to his chest in public.
These things happen.
@@rjgreenfield3827 Yes, as the great scriptures say, "In Him, we live and move and have our being."
I agree. I believe they are both good people, but it wasn't the right time for them to be together.
Carly is a beautiful Human Being, through and through. God bless her soul and keep her safe and well.
True... The first thing addition kills is trust. Without trust, love cannot survive.
The irony is that when he was drunk, he was more attentive to her needs than when he was sober. Frustratingly sad.
Agree agree agree.
@@chrisclermont456 absolutely!!
James and Carly. Two of my all-time favorites. I was so glad to hear she still loves him.
How gracious and kind is this entire interview on both parts??!!!!! Love Carly Simon, love her music and her son Ben Taylor!
It’s heart-breaking that James and Carly no longer speak.

People rarely acknowledge when folks have harmful, belittling views on males, yet are all worked up about misogyny. There isn’t really even a term for bias against the male gender…in common parlance.
It’s frightening to ponder how many folks so inclined, are raising sons.
What goes around, after all.
@@AudriannaB-World-Peace He didn't marry "a bunch more times." He married twice more. The second marriage lasted ten years. His current marriage has lasted more than 20 years and they are still together.
@@AudriannaB-World-Peace. Keep in mind that this video and her book are only her side of the story. I respect his choice to not talk about their marriage.
what a passionate lady and such a hauntingly beautiful voice - always loved her
What a lady , i saw her in the 90’s my friend took me , and i was blown away how good she sounded live her voice was amazing. I hope one day her and James could actually talk and heal they both are such great talents
