Sounds interesting and unique. My problem these days with Ardbeg is that when it comes to special bottles you really need to be a die hard fan to convince yourself spending that much money for what you get. In the US it now goes for 200$ which is honestly insane. I recently bought Springbank 12 and Lagavulin 12 that are both Cask Strength for 129 and 149 dollars each and we all know how good those 2 bottles are.

You're absolutely right. But like you said you really need to be a die hard fan and guess what I am.

Hello my Brother in Ardbeg! I'm glad you managed to get a bottle of this too. It is a very nice and very unusual (if expensive!) Ardbeg.
Very interesting that your tasting group was split on this. I thought that might happen. I like it a lot, so does my dad, my girlfriend (who normally likes Ardbeg) doesn't.
I've not been fortunate enough yet to experience the old 1970s vintage releases but I do wonder if I detect some similarities between this and very old bottles of Ardbeg 10 that I've had. I wonder if fermentation times used to be longer before the reopening?
Great video and thanks for the mention 😎

You might have something there. Old school Ardbegs from the 70s and 80s possess this rather unique 'soapiness' or 'oiliness' that I find and I spoke to their Master of Wood who said that characteristic might appear from the liquid staying in the bottle for that long a time. The end result is surprisingly similar where both the Fermutation and the old school Ardbegs have creaminess/soapiness not found in any of the other expressions.

Expensive experiment to find out I guess. I'm sure volume also plays a role and other external factors hard to recreate in a petri dish.

Won't buy this bottle (just too much marketing flannel) but loved the review all the same! To those who have one tucked away, enjoy it dram for dram. I hope you have a memorable experience. Most importantly though, I think no one needs to get too worried or hot under the collar. It's only a bottle of plonk. Live and let live. Cheers!

I totally agree! Every whisky is just a bottle of plonk. It's the importance you attach to it is what matters. Drink in good health, my good sir.

Solid review, with a ton of good points made. My favorite being: "for the price you could drink these five whiskies... yeah but those five whiskies aren't this whisky"! I agree with this whole heartedly, sure, there are probably more than a few whisky's that dollar for dollar would outscore it in a blind tasting but the absolute truth is, they would'nt fulfill my need to have this particular bottle in my bar (Ardbeg fanboys like myself know what I'm talking about).
    Keep up the great work!

A fellow Ardbeg fanboy I see. Ardbeg is probably the whisky that got me into the scene. Most whiskeys I had up until that point were all one note. Ardbeg was the first that made me think “wow whiskeys can actually have flavor!”. It will always have a place on my shelf, whether it be the core lineup, or a one off committee release that is a bit gimmicky.
Loved the review! A well earned subscribe.

The lactic flavor you're getting comes from malolactic fermentation. It's something that usually happens when a fermentation has gone too long. The yeast stops doing their work which leads to the malic acid in the wash being converted lactic acid by bacteria.

@@MaltActivist learning things beyond what almost all whisky youtubers have become complacent about. Specifically referring to everyone just sticking to NCF, at least 46% abv and no added coloring as marks of quality.
Whisky is more than just an aged spirit. People should look at raw materials, fermentation and distillation more.

You're lucky you are in the U.K as we here in Canada particularly Ontario never get to see anything like the Ardbeg special releases and our prices are the highest on planet earth ( Alpha Centauri as well). P.S - mighty fine collection behind you, we have never even seen a Laphroaig 10 cask strength or the Buffalo Trace releases or most of the Cairdeas releases, we do however have lots of Johnnie Walker Red...... How dry I am, nobody knows how dry I am.

You freak, you went and bought it didn't you? I new you would you fanboy. I left it alone at that price. Having released all my rage somewhere else I'll just respond to the dram which I'm sure I would enjoy. I agree that sometimes you just have to pay for the poison of your choice and if I was an Ardbeg fanboy I would have to buy this bottle too. Personally I don't think it's worth it and that it would not do very well in an Islay blind tasting with much cheaper stuff. Quite a lot of denial of shame in that review buddy. Still, it's your money and your choice. Glad you like it. Cheers. WT
