    wow yours are so mean! I've had my red form "rosie" for two years and she's the sweetest most mild mannered little thing. never been aggressive, she even lets me pinch grab her. maybe just got lucky

    Even tho I was aware of the popular opinion that they were fasting a lot and moody, I decided to get a rosie anyway because it was the more accessible one. I was surprised to see her behavior. The last owner did not handle her a lot and I did not care if my tarantula was going to be handleable or not, but I wanted to try to see how she did. She is a complete sweetheart. In one year, I've been handling her a lot and she never bit, never did a threat posture, goes on my shoulder when I walk around the house, to be honest I have never seen a nicer tarantula in my whole life (some of my friends are breeders and have 200+ tarantulas). I put her in the hand of my friends who have never handled one and she does fantastic. Obviously I test her every time just to be sure and do proper education on how to handle her. I am also the only one to pick her up from her enclosure. However, she is an extremely picky eater and fasts a lot. But in her behavior, she truly is an exception of the species.

    This is a really interesting and informative video.
    I personally am not thinking about buying a tarantula, I'm way too scared. Watching them on my iPad is realistic enough for me !!
    Thanks for taking the time to make all these videos, I really enjoy them 👍🏼

    My first T was a Brachypelma Beohmei and she is still with me, very docile and has never reared or tried to bite me or my family. My second T was a Theraphosa Stirmi and oh boy, she was not the cuddly type. Very fun to observe and feed but she would attack my misting bottle if I wasn't careful wetting her moss.

    Rosies are known (by hobbyists more than non, obviously) to have mood swings. They'll be totally chill one moment, and then get super cranky all the sudden.
    I am totally into avics and had a really great first tarantula, despite the skittish nature and fast running speeds.
    Studying them before a purchase is key!
    Thanks for the information and video on behalf of those new people interested in tarantulas. :)

    you absolutely right.. I wanted a tarantula sling and started to research which species is the best for handling and all the pets stores and online stores recommend the Rosehair.. However when I started to read about them I saw the comments that everybody complains how moody and bitchy they are.. They famous for their mood swings and long fasting ..So thank God I did my research and got the curly hair tarantula sling instead and he/she is a sweetheart!! She is still a baby but no flicking hair at all ,no treat pose, just run fast but it's normal at that age,they slow down as they grow.. In my opinion as far as i researched the best 3 Tarantulas for handling (the most docile ones) are the curly hair, the pink toe (avic avic, but they are jumpy and fast) and the Chilean flame tarantula (euathlus sp. red) the Chilean flame tarantula is a dwarf species they don't grow big ,they stay about 3 inch leg span but they are super docile and calm .. I think this 3 is the best.. :)

      +Christine Bruce yea the Chilean flame dwarf tarantula (euathlus sp red) are definitely the best beginner's! ! i gotta curly hair sling too she never flick hair never a threat pose but she bolt, she is skittish and run to the hills and don't wanna do anything with me but I'm sure she will calm down as she will grow . however the Chilean dwarf flame is a sweetheart .. they are not just super docile but they are famous for wanna walk on your hand every time you open the tank they curious and sweet .. they don't grow big and they grow very slow but it's worth it, they have the best temperament. .

      I find my Porteri to be moody,on one day I can coax her out and handle her no problem,the next day she threatens. But since most spiders don't like to be handled ,I just check the mood.when she is out of her enclosure,she is really docile.

  • @UnderTheNorthStar

    This was the type of spider that almost tagged me- Sharon, my tarantula when I was a kid. Most of the time she would let me handle her, no worries, but one time she span and almost tagged me. No threat posture, nothing, just spin launch and bite. Just a bad day for her I guess. Also, she was a master of escaping from her tank- she had a heated converted aquarium. She used to crawl into my bed whilst I slept and end up under my pillows by my hand. As a kid I thought she was just being friendly. As an adult I guess it was something to do with body heat. Weirdly, she was killed by a locust. As far as I could tell, it kicked her somehow, and the next day I found her dead :( It was about two weeks after a moult so I wondered if that had something to do with it. I'd waited for her exoskeleton to harden, but still, something went wrong.

    Brazilian Blacks are fantastic for a beginner. However, no matter what species you have, and no matter what you think about its general temperament, always test with a paintbrush to see how it's feeling at that moment if you're going to handle.

      What do you think about gbb as a first tarantula? I've heard people suggest them.

    • @mrcokez1
      @mrcokez1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Raising Robertsons A curly hair is ALOT better than a rosehair any day of the week, sure individuals may vary but if you look on arachnoboards there have been multiple bite reports from rose-hairs. I have yet to see a bite report from a B. Albopilosum (curly hair). If you do decide to get a rose-hair you should be cautious since they tend to be bipolar and randomly refuse food that can worry a new T-owner (i havent fed my rose-hair in over 3 months) , you've been warned.
      Look on arachnoboards to find if there's a curly hair bite report -- you cant.
      Best starter T in my opinion without the hassle of it being bi-polar + fasting for several months.
      and not only that, they're dirt cheap too! you can get a 2inch juvi for 5$

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mrcokez1 very good advice. I would choose a curly over a Rosie any day of the week for a new beginner. they are the best beginner T out there, tbh, not just because of their temperament, but they are readily available as well, unlike the Euathlus sp. Red (best beginner in my opinion, but hard to find)

    Interesting. The only taranula I ever owned was a Grammostola Rosea. I had her for 9 years, she was 14 years old when she died. I got the species because it was recommended to me "the classic docile beginner spider". After watching this video I can clearly relate to it. Over the years I've seen all postures demostrated in this clip in my spider: Jumpiness, chilled out total calmness, aggressiveness and defense. There was no way to tell her mood before opening her enclosure. She did bombard every now and then as well, without provocation. At other times she was extremely relaxed and I could handle her (which I rarely did). She also randomly stopped feeding, would then just kill the crickets and throw them into a corner, for months. I got used to her moods and just treated her with great carefulness, never got bitten. Though, even only having this one experience with one individual, I don't think I would recommend the species to a total beginner myself.

    Nice video. I thought about a rose but opted instead for a pink zebra beauty. I almost had him for 3 years, but he died this past July. I held him only once and probably could have a few more times. He has attacked the straw I used a few times and primarily after a molt when I suspect they're the most hungry and moody. Also too, the time of season is important. My T would be the most docile during late fall and through the winter. Take care.

    i have never had problems with Queen Brachio. had her since 2010 and my friend had her nearly 5 years before me, but lost interest in her. the only time i have ever seen her defensive at all (which was deserved in a sense) was when i was bringing stuff to my room, and i tripped not only dropping several things on top of the terarium but also falling against the shelf myself. i love holding her, though when she is out and well on me she tends to rest on my shoulder. it's cute ^_^.

  • @MillyMouse3
    @MillyMouse3 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, I narrowly dodged a bullet a few years back. I was interested when I was 19/20 in getting a tarantula and my local pet store had the usual rose hair and swore they were easy and i could hold it all the time. Not that I would, but if it bit me I know I would be scared to touch it ever again. I actually am super afraid of spiders. Tends to send me into full blown panic. has my whole life. But a travelling "zoo" handler put a tarantula in my hands and I held and played with it for what felt like decades (after I stopped panicking and started to be interested) before returning it to its enclosure. I held it through the chocolate skunk demo and all sorts. So at that point I started not seeing them as spiders. They intrigued me. Now I live next to a lake and my fear of spiders has shot through the roof. Part of me wonders had I found the right tarantula if it would have been therapeutic in treating my fear, much like that fond childhood memory. When I say fear I don't mean squeal. I mean I can't breathe and my reactions become unpredictable. A small yellow house spider can have me watching the ceilings, nooks, and corners in terror for at least a week. I don't get how tarantulas are even slightly less scary for me. Its entirely irrational.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MillyMouse3 I understand what you mean completely. I am actually not very fond of true spiders, and while I am not afraid of them, I will avoid them if I can. Tarantulas, on the other hand, do not scare me and its almost like they are a different animal completely. I used to be very scared of spiders in general, and never would have thought to find myself keeping over 20 of the biggest spider-like animals. They are extremely interesting, and I couldn't see myself not having at least one in my care at all times. I hope you can find a tarantula that helps you overcome your fear (: Its a great thing to be able to do

    Great video! I'm glad to know it's not just mine. My G. rosea is exactly as you describe: when she first moved in (and for a few days after I clean her tank), she was docile and I could handle her. But after she gets comfortable in her territory, if I approach her gently with a straw, she attacks the hell out of it. If you tickle her hind legs while she is still adjusting to her environment, she will walk forward -- but once she is settled and confident, she reacts by turning right around and brings out the fangs. Here is a pic of my girl in "not today" mood: i.imgur.com/rmcqAkv.jpg I still think they make great pets, as long as the owner doesn't try to handle any spider acting like that. I pick her up in a soup bowl now...

    i have an avic avic (pink toe), like the video says they are arboreal, and very fast when they wanna be, but we baught her as a juvenile and she has slowed down a little as she has matured. she was definately the perfect choice for us as a starter tarantula, she is usually happy to come out and can be just held by my husband qhile i clean her tank, very docile... our latest treat is a gooty ornimental spiderling... not so good as a first, very skittish, potent venum, but beautiful if you want something just to look at. i suppose it depends what you want to do qith your tarantula. please can anyone planning their firat do a lot of research first though, make surw your qilling to care for them for 20 years. if you get a female she may well live that long.

    I am shocked to see them react that way. My first T is a male Grammostola rosea (Chilian Rose Hair) from PetSmart, and my second is a feamale Grammostola rosea from the Serpatarium. Both are very calm and easy to handle. It could be that mine are a rarity I guess. The male has lived longer than I was told he would, this is his 7th year with me, and though he is slow and showing his age, is still very friendly. My third T is a Brachypelma boehmei ( Mecican Fire Leg) from the Serpatarium that turned out to be a female. Sadly she is very good at getting stuck in the strangest places and was very defensive so I never hold her. My fourth T is a Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens ( Green Bottle Blue ) from the Serpatarium. She has never been defensive, but she does this thing with her front legs if you open her tank up as if she is looking for you, almost like a mating tap so I have always been to scared to try and pick her up. My fifth and most recent addition is a Poecilotheria metallica ( Gooty Sapphire Ornamental ) from the Serpatarium. I have been working my way up to getting this T from the start. I would never try to hold a pokie, and though she is a mean eater, she has never once shown any defensive posturing. I wonder if you just got very unlucky, or maybe I am just very very lucky for all of my T's to be as calm as they are. Defensive Rose Hairs though is a shock to me.

    I would make sure I have the right temperature and humidity if the spider is too cold or hot or too dry and so on it is going to be stressed 24/7 and never allow you to hold it.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Cameron Johnson The rest of my Ts are perfectly happy in the conditions they are in, and the Rosies are known to be one of the easiest species to take care of. Since they are a desert species, they do not require high humidity, and a water dish provides all the moisture they need. They are also comfortable with whatever temperature a person is comfortable at, so they are actually fine with room temperatures. They are just temperamental by nature.

    Rose tarantualas are the shiba inu,s (doge) of spiders. they do NOT make good first pets for their species. shiba inus don't make good first dogs. and rosehairs are bad first spiders.

    My rose hair (Bani) mood varies all the time. She has never ever used the defensive pose or flicked hairs but there has been days when i have gone to push her onto my hand she turns around and jumps at it kinda thing. I have never handled her because i was scared of this but my dad does most of the time. I think rose hairs are okay depending on how confident you are

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Elle Fuentes I agree. and although tarantulas cannot sense fear like snakes can, it depends on your movements and your breath. If you breathe on them because you are nervous, they feel it and it freaks them out haha. But yeah, I've seen my rosies do the turn and lunge kinda thing when they don't want to be disturbed.

      +Senshii84 You're actually right about what you said on your video about not holding any Ts that show signs of defensive behavior. My B. Smithi acts like a grumpy rose hair too.. • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jerum Distura thank you!! While I do believe that each T has their own 'personality', I would never compare them to a cat or a dog, and especially a human. +David Miller I will never put my hand in a tarantulas enclosure without first testing its mood with an object like a paintbrush. +hitsumiku30 i disagree. ive had many bad experiences with my rose hairs and only 1 out of 4 that have been nice but i still handle most. you need captive bred which is harder to find otherwise they are wild caught and thats where the bad temperament comes from. some may be moody cause temperament is never guaranteed with all tarantulas but as long as you can get a captive bred one then you are most likely good.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheKoolkrow It really depends on the individual...Despite the evidence in this video, there are some extremely docile Rosies out there. It's just a matter of finding one that consistently doesn't mind being held.If you want me to give you a name, the Curly Hair is one I would feel comfortable giving you, as I have never heard a story of these guys being mean. Also, a Mexican Red Knee would be a great one, although they are expensive as adults. Slings and Juveniles of this species can be quite flighty, so if you can't get an adult, I'd say get a Curly Hair.Arizona Blondes seem to be reluctant to bite as well.

    • @geeezteeez9085
      @geeezteeez9085 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but it's at the cost of stressing the tarantula out and most people have no clue what they are doing and could get themselves bitten.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Geeez Teeez this is true, but I have to commend people that are willing to try and get over their fears this way. It is not easy for some people, and I rly admire those that even want to try. Therefore, I gave suggestions on Ts that are least likely to bite.

    So how do you keep the temperature and humidity at the right level in tarantula enclosures?
    Just curious, I'm doing my research and contemplating on whether I should get one or not, the only "tarantula."
    The only tarantula like species I have are the Sydney Funnel Web and the bird eater and there's no chance in hell I am housing anyone of those two lol.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tamara D Honestly, I keep a lot of Ts that are perfect at room temperature and the humidity comes from the water dish if they need any humidity. I keep a lot of desert species, so they do not require any misting or additional care. Slings naturally dry out faster, so they do need a bit higher humidity, so I keep them in small containers with a few holes in the side and I mist them once in a while to keep it humid for them until they can use a water dish.

    My Chilean rose just molted and measures up to 5.5" in leg span. She's very cranky unless she's eaten a day prior to handling. She hates it so much and is very hard to maneuver her because she will not budge. I refrain from handling my Ts as much as possible as is. But I do occasionally.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zephy Martin Yeah I don't handle mine simply because they get nothing from it, unlike snakes who become tame the more they are handled. I only handle if I am demonstrating or teaching others about them, I don't do it just because I'm bored and I can haha

    • @zephymartin2285
      @zephymartin2285 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    While not a beginner tarantula by any means, Goliath Bird Eaters are usually pretty docile. Course that may only apply to the ones I've had the pleasure of knowing.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +omar skipper It really depends, and it is hard to say. But from my experience, the slings are actually better at being held than most of my adults. A Ts personality can change dramatically from sling to adult, and it also depends on the species and how it is being kept.

    I only have an Avic Avic currently, but from many breeders I have heard that the Rose is the most unpredictable. That being said, I keep getting told that using paintbrushes also is part of the problem. I watched a breeder walk a OBT onto his hand using only his other hand to nudge it (while I freaked out like a monkey on meth), but the same T went nuts when he used his "prodding" brush to move it down his arm. This breeder has stated repeatedly that brushes seem to convey a dangerous item to the Tarantula whereas using tongs or (shudders) your other hand doesn't threaten them like the sensation of a brush's bristles stratiating your hind quarter hairs. After a few minutes, he was again able to move the OBT by using his hand and it only tossed up one leg for a second right before hurrying off his arm. IDK... Maybe this has something to do with it. I mean, I'd not like it if you poked a brush on my ass, but your hand would be ok. Think about it.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Kelly I've always had problems whether it was my tongs or the brush. I do not think it matters one bit to the T what is touching them.

      Well damn, now I'm really stumped. There has got to be an external reason especially if they were good beforehand. You sound very knowledgeable, so I do not mean to insult. Right humidity? are they getting all their vitamins? is there any form of vibration or constant air blowing that would bother them? Maybe a different brand of bedding?
      Every other specimen I have ever seen (recorded admittedly) have been so passive it's concerning, for you to have 3 that aren't? I don't have a degree in statistics but that's pretty abnormal.

      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dachozogod the only thing I can think of is that they are rose hairs haha. everybody is kept the same and I have some 20-22 tarantulas and everyone else is fine. the only exception is my LP, but that thing is always insane...not mean just super fast and skittish.
      don't get me wrong, my Rosies are not always so hot-headed, but they are more so than my other Ts. that is why I made this video

      +Jeff Jeff Oh my god.... no offense but that is an absolutely terrible idea. What species are you referring to? T. stirmi (burgundy goliath bird eater)? P. muticus ( king baboon)? All of the theraphosa species are extremely heavy bodied and because of this should not be handled as they are prone to injury ( they've also got some pretty nasty urticating hairs). P. muticus is an old world species meaning they are fast, have very potent venom, and are generally defensive. Why you would want to handle either of these species is beyond me.

    Rosie's are one of my favorite, but Curlys are great beginners. I had 3 Rose hairs that were the sweetest. Zoey, the nicest, would let me just put my hand on her fangs and wouldn't do anything. When I put food in her cage however, she ate! It's as if she knew me from food. Some have a temperament but my father who is an exotic vet and zoologist told me all tarantulas have their own personalities.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lily Kotoko they certainly do. I also agree that curlys are great beginners, and I would recommend them over a rosie any day

    • @lilykotoko7989
      @lilykotoko7989 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Senshii84 me too, also Curlys are so fluffy looking lol! Some Rosies have bad personality issues but others, like mine, can be sweet hearts. Sadly, all my super nice ones Exocet Chaos (who is grumpy at times) have passed and all the other Rosies I've met rear up in defense mode.

    My friend is looking at getting a tarantula and has been told by almost every pet store that rose hairs are perfect beginners and when she went in to actually see one (a female) she was totally docile and was letting the pet store guy hold her and play with her. Is it just her personality or are most that docile?

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Hayley williamson pet stores have no idea what they are saying and more than likely they have never seen another species of tarantula besides the rosie. In any case, it honestly comes down to the individual spider. I've seen people get very lucky and find a consistently docile rosie, but for the most part, I've noticed they can get mean and defensive at random times. It's all up to the spider though.

    that's nothin. the exotic pet store near me sells cobalt blues and birdeaters to people all the time. they even make you buy the enclosure with the spider because the employees are too scared of the spiders to take them out and put them in a carry box. and they should be, but they don't tell the customers.

    • @Senshii84
      @Senshii84  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ut00bsux0rz haha this is funny. I actually say a cobalt blue for sale at a local PetCo once. He started out at $100 then down to $50, then $20 last time I checked. This was a while ago, but I'm not sure if he got sold or not. Honestly, I don't think pet stores like that should be allowed to sell tarantulas at all...

      +TheCreeper246 either one of those are great beginners!! but please remember that the handleability and temperament of a tarantula really depends on the individual. I will also recommend a Euathlus so. Red as a beginner. These can be found online occasionally if you are planning to look online for one

    I have a terrible fear of arachnids, but my mother has had three Rosies before and they have never been that defensive. Maybe we just got lucky? Our latest fella is a dream and while I've only held one and never again (their legs just give me chills), I have touched their tushies often and they've never turned to bite, just kinda shimmy away. While I'm still afraid of arachnids, I can genuinely say I've loved every Tarantula we've had the privilege to call a part of our family! ^__^

      +Linda Rexrode some rosies are extremely docile consistently, so they do exist, but they are hard to come by. Linda Rexrode Thank you so much for the kind words. That's true! I've had the pleasure of sharing a home with snake ranging from 3-16 feet long and they were just the best! We had a 16 foot Burmese Python and she was or snuggle bunny...even though she ate bunnies, but still so sweet! If I could be calm around them, then I should be able to handle spiders if I put my full heart and mind into them!
