Can we just give a nod to Bruce here? His playing and his essential, powerful back up singing is just phenomenal. What a class act. It's funny but despite enduring the not so pleasantries of old age, the Jam make me appreciate my age and that I had them to grow up with. Thank you God.
The Jam! More energy that battersea power station. I had the absolute privilege of seeing them live a number of times. They had the rawness of the punk era mixed with the slickness of the 60's. I don't believe there will ever be a band like it. They were of the moment, of the past and of the future.
That’s why there music has stood the test of time , brilliant albums along with outstanding singles and top notch live , they have left an unbelievable legacy 🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵
I am blessed to have seen The Jam play four times "back in the day". They were my favorite band of the late 70s early 80s. Going Underground is one of my fave songs - along with he flip side, Butterfly Collector.
The switching from public gets what the public wants in verse 1 to public wants what they public gets is probably one of the greatest lines you'll find in a UK number one hit single
Absolutely agree; he so vehemently opposed to the Thatcher government and Tory policies at the time- this song- and that line-is Paul spitting in the face of political authority. If he wrote music today with 1/8th the amount of anger and urgency- I’d might buy his albums again.
What a great band these guys were. I loved there music. I met Paul Weller going back in, i think it was 1983. My buddy and I went to see Teardrop Explodes at a small venue in Toronto, not too far from Maple Leaf gardens. Well, the Jam were playing there and after their concert they came too see Teardrop Explodes. Who sits at out table but none other than Paul Weller. WOW!!! I knew it was him. He said hello and asked if it was alright too sit down. We said sure. The rest is history. LOL.

David Allen Soo true. Weller could have written this today. Nothing ever changes !!! To understand the world at such a young age is incredible. I'm 48 so Weller was only a few years older than me but his insightful lyrics and life commentary, i'm ashamed to say, only hit home years later. How many people in this crowd recognised what he was singing about ????!!!! All of them have grown up now and still living what he wrote about nearly 40 years ago. like I said... nothing changes
absolutely luv ths song. best live vers i'v ever seen! my fav punk/new wave band next 2 the clash. or was it mod/punk/new wave? does it mattr? any more songs from this show out there? luv these guys.

Saw them in 1982 in California ... Absolutely amazing!

Fantastic leftwing band for the working class not for the rich and famous

Given the magnitude of his achievements, it's hard to believe that The Jam was only active for five years.

1977 to 1982 is 6 years mate 😊
what a phenomenal live act they were...
The Jam were just as good live as on their records. Amazing.
so was Madness and Blondie, all 3 were superb live (and 2 still are)
They sure were! I saw them a couple years after this and they were brilliant
@jeoffjoffy yes so Tight!!

Lyrical poetry and musical genius. And tight AF live performance..WOW!!!
Now THAT is what I'm fucking talking about, pure unadulterated CLASS
Paul Weller had just celebrated his 22nd birthday the day before this performance. What an incredible talent at such a young age - and the lyrics!
If only all the footage of this concert was recorded . What a feat that would be...
My favourite live version of this classic.

it poped up on on mute, i thought it was Fugazi show. So intense, great version, great Paul Weller.
Paul is the reason why I bought a Rickenbacker 330 in black.
Not Lennon?

the best band in the world...ever!
The thing about The Jam is that their records sounded different than how they were live. Much more immediate and aggressive.
Listen to it and let it grab you as it did me and millions of others.
