I know Rick personally. He's a great guy and doesn't talk shit. He's kind, decent and honorable. He never once slaged off the Jam. In fact he only said good things and has many fond memories of the band. People want to trash talk just to put people down. If you don't hear it from the guy then don't talk crap.

Hiya m8. I'm a mega big Human League fan myself. Who I've seen play live 18 times in total now. The Jam song ie That's Entertainment which is my favourite A side song by The Jam. Always reminds me of a good Chess match 4 Portsmouth B or C team. That I have played in. And a Human League gig. I will always love the Jam and the Human League.

Been a fan for decades. First time I've heard Buckler in an interview. What a decent, normal guy. No pretense, none of what you'd expect from a rick star that had his success. Very impressed. Different from Weller's interviews.

The Jam were pure class and will be remembered for a long time. They never recorded a bad song and were great live. I don't think they should reform because they can never match what they did back then. Let's leave it in the memory and listen to what they're doing now!!

What a wonderful interview with a real gentleman. I have every album and single they ever made and went to all their gigs. The best memories ever. So much energy and so intense and meaningful. The lyrics were so clever and extremely pertinent. Loved those times. There was a real feeling of belonging to something great.
We were really upset with Paul at the time. The bitterest pill.
    Rick Butler is a gem.

Lol...it must be great to be so pessimistic and look on the dark side of life, always seeing that glass half empty, always questioning whether people are genuine or not. Seen quite a few interviews Rick's given and he always comes across the same. Mind who knows hey, he may well have murdered half a dozen people !

Lol....you made me smile, not at you but with you in a way...perhaps life gets you like to be fair. Not been fucked over too many times but I've lived with illness for most of my adult life and I guess that's the same. You have to keep knocking continuous doors down to get to look through each window that comes along. I guess I should be more pessimistic really, but I always said to myself I'm not going to spend the good times I get moaning about the bad times I have to deal with....and me typical Gemini...some times I'm gregarious and like company but others times I like my own.....Everyone deals with life differently, there is no right way I guess......I always say if you're smiling, you're probably getting it right....Peace !

I was 10 when I first heard the Jam/In the City. At that age and even growing into my teens, I used to think Rick looked hard as nails, like you wouldn't mess with him, but as you see from this interview and others on here, he is anything but. And I'll say he really is one of the best drummers I've ever seen and the reason is, is that he makes it look effortless. Next time you see a live video of them on here, just watch Rick on the drums, you can tell he enjoys it and that's why he makes it look so easy. 1st class pro and lovely guy!

  • @ggghhjd

I met Rick in carnaby street in 1984 just after that Bruce gig at the Astoria in London where Rick bumped into Paul upstairs. He told me about it at the time that Weller just said, "Alright?" and then went off with his mates. Rick said neither of them stayed until the end of the show, and he asked me about the 'riot' that happened when Bruce ended with a jam song, 'Smithers-Jones.'I was at the front so I saw it wasn't a riot, but there was a gap between the stage and the boards where we were pushed up against in a crush at the front, and when the song started, about 10-15 blokes somehow clambered over our heads and were pogoing in that gap and one of them fell and smashed himself on a metal pole...but that's all that was. I think Foxton had waited until the last night of his tour to play a Jam song and everyone went nuts. I just wish I had known that Paul and Rick were upstairs and I would have gone up. But Rick was a gent then back in 84 and he remains a class guy. The trouble with silences and avoiding someone is it doesn't get better with years, it just gets more intense even if they can't remember why one is avoiding the other. I heard Paul didn't like it when Rick said "What's this shit?" the first time he heard 'Precious.' But John Weller claimed 'the other two' were taking Paul for granted. Splitting the band like he did certainly fucked over both Bruce and Rick, but he was free to do it, its just a shame.

The so called "mates" Buckler and Foxton Sued Weller and took him to court over "unpaid songwriting credits" which is ridiculous..they couldn't string a decent song together between them to start with...they also wrote a very very nasty book called "our story"....Weller and his songwriting ability gave both Foxton and Buckler a decent living and then they go and sue him..he doesn't owe them anything...it's the other way around......If "London traffic" was the best Foxton could come up with during his entire Jam career then he really shouldn't be taking anyone to court over "songwriting credits"... Weller did what he believed was right at the time..the band had come to the end of the road...and "The Gift" proved that Weller was right....could you imagine "long hot summer" or "you're the best thing" being The Jam tracks with Buckler/Foxton playing on them?.....neither can I

Surprising that they haven't spoken since 1983 or whatever. He turned down the chance to play with Bruce and Paul at a charity gig in the last couple of years though

Paul Weller just isn't that interesting - a bit like John Lennon after the Beatles. Sorry lad, it's true.

Weller solo material is just tedious. Meandering songs with vague lyrics about nothing interesting

@@dang2443 The first 5-6 solo albums were great. When he broke up his band with Steve White, I lost interest.

would love to see a jam reunion and I would buy a front row seat but it will never happen sadly, I have watched weller live and foxton with the stiff little fingers live but never watched ol rick yet bashing his drums............

Everyone would like to see a reunion but Paul Weller said just after they split in late 82 that The Jam was a movement directed towards the youth of that day. and it as they grew older themselves thought it would be wrong to continue with the youth rebellion songs and that he wanted to take his music in another direction.

Cant believe they haven't spoke for years.Rick seems like a sound bloke so maybe there was a bigger bust up that we dont know about.

    • @jjdundas3496

Weller's old man was the problem in it all. He 'managed' the band and as Rick said the meeting to discuss the break-up was organised by John (Weller). Paul W didn't even have the guts to speak for himself at the meeting.

      @johnmarlonscott6693 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Unfortunately it is sad,I don't think it was money, although Rick and bruce took paul to court over royalties I think, Rick and paul weren't that close in the band, Paul and bruce were, maybe that has something to do with it,if so ,must have been awful , being a 3 piece band .

I never really got the Jam. I like Tubestation and Malice but most of their songs just never did much for me. They were never big in the States but I do admire their ability as musicians. Their rhythm section kicked ass.
