    What is your favorite technique for writing a great hook?

    Great video. Donald Maass in his great book, 'The Fire in Fiction,' (chapter 8) discusses microtension, which is small tension created by not quite giving the reader everything. A typical example might be; "You know who the killer is Holmes? Who is it?" "Not yet Watson, first we must..." you hook the reader then delay giving them the answer until later.

      That's a great example. I haven't read that book. I will check it out. Thanks for the feedback!

    How are you doing mrs Angie and mr Dave . Iam Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American TH-cam channels. I sent comments to you from long time . Thank you for your wonderful educational channel about creative writing. We appreciate your great efforts as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level and improve our as well , literature lovers too . I gathered main information about topic you mentioned briefly here it narrative hook is technique in opening story that hooks reader attention so that they will keep reading. There are several tips for writing great hook we must follow such as title is first hook , drop reader into middle of action. From emotional connection. Make surprising statements. Leave reader with questions. Stay away from description. Once you have reader attention keep it . I hope I can learn a lot from your knowledge. Best wishes for you your dearest ones .

    The synopsis is not a blurb

    • @DaveandAngieSmuin
      @DaveandAngieSmuin  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A book blurb is something that piques interest. The content on the back of the cover is often referred to as the book blurb. The synopsis is generally a full overview of your story, giving everything away. They both have different purposes.
      I may have missed it, but I do not think we mixed up the two terms.

      I've always known the blurbs to be what a critic or other authors say about the book.
      But no biggie...

    A few negative remarks. Your post appears to be 2 months old when YT showed it to me, but the books you are selling on Amazon date to 2016. I hope your writing style has changed since then. If you want that taken apart, I can. In light of Redemption's Price, this posting's value really drops. Emotional connection is getting the reader to sympathise with the character, not stating emotion, like (spoken???) '... However, the result has turned into a passionate love and desire to be with you....'

      Thanks for the feedback. The amazing thing about life is that we can learn and grow. Yes, those two books date way back to 2016. If you watch many of our videos you will discover that we are very honest about our writing journey. Shimmer and Redemptions price started as a date night project. We were clueless! But, we did it! We have learned a lot over the last 8 + years. Our writing has improved and we love sharing what we have learned. Thanks for joining us.

      @@DaveandAngieSmuin Thank you for the fast reply. Why do I look at published work? A. There are many writing styles and if our styles do not coincide at least somewhat, your feedback is going to be off the point. B. There are a lot of fakes out there, people who understand how to parrot but not incorporate. For example, on your latest video on outlining, a book should have a series of decisions/challenges/turning points, each with unforeseen consequences, usually negative. What medium you want to use to log those decisions and consequences is personal, but until you have that list either in your head or in writing, there is no outline. (Not everyone outlines before writing.) You are describing a book concept (who, what, etc.), not an outline. So, without examples of what you are capable of, I have to guess you are not my style of writer. Sorry.
