    I really enjoy commenting but i have noticed most of the writing channels i like don't get comments much and they are mostly just a "good job" so i leave conversational comments they seem to enjoy talking with me the girl i got the writing prompt from was so excited when it told her i was using one of her prompt so i give her little progress reports on the story it has given be a boost of self confidence

    self doubt is something i struggle with writing is a roller coaster of emotions i wrote my first novel knowing nothing about the writing craft but i had a story i wanted to tell the story idea was good but my story telling was bad i have gotten a much better over the 10 years i have been writing one day i hope to go back and rewrite my first novel but my story about Johnny is going well i think when it's done i could get it ready to publish since middle grade stories are no more then 50000 the revision process is much shorter

    I always start with internal conflict and make the story around that my story I'm writing write now was sparked my a story prompt that could have gone so many ways but with Johnny's internal conflict he made a decision that fuels the story without it there would be no story

    • @DaveandAngieSmuin
      @DaveandAngieSmuin 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Internal conflict is a huge part of a good story! Some writers start with the character and the internal conflict and the story unfolds from there. I love that we are all so unique and have different ways of constructing our stories. But the internal conflict is a good place to start!

    For me, it's a challenge to keep the balance between #1 and #2. Describing the character's motivation may contradict discovering the character over time. My plot contains a lot of conspiracy and betrayal, with multiple people turning out to have different motivations than expected. A reason my concept of giving about twenty people at least one POV chapter probably won't work is that it feels like betraying the reader, like hiding thoughts and feelings of characters while telling less important stuff just to tell something. That's why I now concentrate on the POV of a few low ranked people, who have no clue about what their higher-ups are really planning. So I have to reveal to the reader only what the other characters reveal to these originally four people, of whom after a major turning point in the middle only two are still alive.

    • @DaveandAngieSmuin
      @DaveandAngieSmuin 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I love this! It is always tricky to decide whose POV the story is told through. If done correctly, it allows for revealing a little bit at a time. I love the conspiracy and betrayal themes in a book. It is a great way to elevate the tension and conflict.

    • @stgr6669
      @stgr6669 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DaveandAngieSmuin That's true. At the moment, I'm wavering between two options. I may use four POV characters, two fom the "goodies" and two from the "baddies" teams. The former will be a disillusioned veteran soldier and a brash, overconfident young activist, the latter a disgraced and disgruntled military officer (a truly horrible human being) and small fry criminal he hired as a henchwoman (eventually the most important character of the story). Or I may write in first person, from the good soldier's POV. Scenes where he wasn't present, but will later have the opportunity to speak to someone who was, will be told by him too, with his more or less correct evaluation. While he is the narrator, the henchwoman is the person whose character arc is told over the course of the story and who has to sort out things at the end.

    Great video. Donald Maass in his great book, 'The Fire in Fiction,' (chapter 8) discusses microtension, which is small tension created by not quite giving the reader everything. A typical example might be; "You know who the killer is Holmes? Who is it?" "Not yet Watson, first we must..." you hook the reader then delay giving them the answer until later.

    A few negative remarks. Your post appears to be 2 months old when YT showed it to me, but the books you are selling on Amazon date to 2016. I hope your writing style has changed since then. If you want that taken apart, I can. In light of Redemption's Price, this posting's value really drops. Emotional connection is getting the reader to sympathise with the character, not stating emotion, like (spoken???) '... However, the result has turned into a passionate love and desire to be with you....'

      @@DaveandAngieSmuin Thank you for the fast reply. Why do I look at published work? A. There are many writing styles and if our styles do not coincide at least somewhat, your feedback is going to be off the point. B. There are a lot of fakes out there, people who understand how to parrot but not incorporate. For example, on your latest video on outlining, a book should have a series of decisions/challenges/turning points, each with unforeseen consequences, usually negative. What medium you want to use to log those decisions and consequences is personal, but until you have that list either in your head or in writing, there is no outline. (Not everyone outlines before writing.) You are describing a book concept (who, what, etc.), not an outline. So, without examples of what you are capable of, I have to guess you are not my style of writer. Sorry.

    Great week for editing! Just hit 20,000 words this week and I love to edit my nonfiction periodically. #killyourdarling love it and let it go, add it to a notes page for later use. Question for you, I started working on cover art. How do you guys go about generating ideas for your cover art?

    • @DaveandAngieSmuin
      @DaveandAngieSmuin 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Cover art is one of my favorite things. When I work on the covers for our books, I usually do some basic research by looking at other books in the genre. What do other book covers look like in my genre? Then, I brainstorm ideas of what elements from the story I want to be considered. Then, I take those ideas to one of the custom book cover designers I work with and see what they come up with. I made a video about that and included the two companies that I have used and recommend. Here is the link to check out that video. th-cam.com/video/g7ZlM-KWVc8/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you mrs Angie for your wonderful channel about creative writing. I gathered main information about topics you mentioned briefly here it’s first of all definition of outline of novel synonyms roadmap , blue story for story . Writing outline that includes description of protagonist, description of setting, themes , details chapter by chapter, line by line, scene by scene. Creating outline involves jotting down , main plot , arranging them logically, fleshing them out with details like characters motivations and conflict. Some writers prefer to broad line with just main plot , while others prefer more detailed outline that included subplot and character acres . I have great news I will became soon English teacher . Late this week, but hey liked your video release today. I'm a storyboarder. Drawing pictures if I hit road bumps in writing. I have a question for you both. Do you enjoy when a book takes breaks from the ordinary writing flow with temporary variants? My opinion, depends if the variant fits the theme or it feels too jarring. Do you have any examples of a book that uses variant switching to its advantage?

      Drawing pictures is a great way to break through when your stuck. I do that sometimes. I think switching interrupts the story too much. I can't think of a book that does it well. If the switch was actually part of the storyline it may work, but I think it's hard to pull off. I asked Angie and she couldn't think of an example she liked either.

I always keeping notebooks and pen beside me to looke up for new vocabularies and information. Internet is great educational tool . I hope all people understand this . I looked up for words you mentioned sprint time is time boxed period of one week to one month . Hook in writing means opening statement which usually in first sentence that attempt’s to grab readers attention. Incident is something happened often unpleasant. Inciting to prompt to action , encourage. There are main differences between fiction and nonfiction books. Fiction refers to literature that grounded in real life events . Non fiction refers to actual stories based on real people, events .

      I am so glad you are learning from the videos. Just a clarification on the words you looked up. A writing sprint is when you set a timer and you spend that time in focused writing without getting distracted. It is a useful tool to make progress on a project. Usually a writing sprint is a set amount of time, 20, 25, or 30 minutes. The rest of your definitions are correct. Good job on growing your vocabulary.

    yes middle grade is what im working no i have given the 2 main kids a few phrases that are unique to them but the real difference is in the way they see things and there internal conflict that is different

    Brewing a creative nonfiction. Anyone else do a majority of the writting on their phone? I'll be trying to sleep late at night and end up jotting ideas in it. My sleep rythm is atrocious!

      I have taken endless notes on my phone. I tried voice to text to write, but found I was too hands on. I like the delete key too much. lol. Look forward to seeing you next week.

    my problem is trying to get the dialogue different between two characters they say everyone needs to speak differently but not everyone does i was watching a group of friend kids play 3 boys 3 and 1 girl i couldn't tell a difference for their speech they are country kids and love the same kind of movies they were all buying for my attention they don't have a lot of adults that wanted to spent time with them so when i come around they wanted to talk and have me play games the kids personalities were vastly different but not much in the speech maybe a few worlds

      You do have a valid point. Sometimes you can make each character's voice distinct by having a phrase or a few words they say different from the other characters. It can be subtle differences. I think you may find that adults have more variance in how they talk. It can also make a difference if a character is from a specific region or place that has some speech differences. If I remember correctly you write middle grade fiction. You can give each character something unique to set them apart.

    Hello, this could not have come out at a better time. Is anyone else having trouble joining the group. I'm on mobile and when I click the blue button to join it just refreshes the page. (Still persists when I switch to 'desktop view' in settings.)

      Hey Joshua, this is Dave. You should let people read it and give you feedback. Just be careful who you choose at first. I finished my first book and would not publish it because I was so insecure about my writing abilities. It was a nonfiction book and I was confident in what I was saying, but not in my writing. It took a long time before I overcame that and finally hit publish. I appreciate you joining tonight.

      Thanks for watching! I can't really pick a favorite either. depends on the story I'm writing. Although when I am reading...I prefer happily ever after. I like the characters to have a happy ending.
