  • The Steyr M1912, also known as the Steyr-Hahn, is a semi-automatic pistol developed in 1911 by the Austrian firm Steyr Mannlicher, based on the mechanism of the Roth-Steyr M1907. It was developed for the Austro-Hungarian Army and adopted in 1912. "The M1912 is an excellent pistol, strong and reliable,"[1] and was able to endure the adverse conditions of trench warfare during World War I.
The M1912 was originally chambered for the 9mm Steyr round.

Thanks for this video. Actually the Austrian Army only adopted the M1912 after the outbreak of WW1 in 1914. The Romanians adopted the M1912 in 1912. The M1911 Steyr-Hahn was adopted by the Chilean army also in 1912, but with a fixed front sight blade as the only mechanical difference.

It's a pretty solid gun. Honestly if it took detachable magazines, it might achieve 1911 status and still be used.
Side note, I still don't understand the safety. I might have missed it, but it seems like the safety just blocks the hammer, thus preventing accidental firing from that but not, say, a drop with enough force to engage the firing pin. Am I misunderstanding or missing something?

is there any particular reason nobody ever thought to make a detatchable magazine conversion for this? it doesn't look like that would be terribly hard to do..? at least compared to other strange conversions i've seen for weapons

There was the frommer stop in 1912 and 1911 with all of its variations, so it's not that it can't be done but that there's so little reason to

Magazines were fairly expensive components back in the early 20th Century, the ability to use inexpensive stripper clips instead was desirable for some.
Personally I find clip fed pistols interesting, be they stripper clips or en bloc like the early Bergmanns.
